Toni Morrison was an American writer who received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her novels, Beloved, Song of Solomon and others explored the way African-Americans search for freedom and identity in a country obsessed (受困扰的) with skin colour. Morrison was nearly 40 when she published her first novel The Bluest Eye in 1970. The Nobel Prize committee described her writing as “language itself, a language she wants to liberate from race”. Her novels discussed America’s past, focusing on black history and the effects of slavery and racism. She called her characters “the unfree at the heart of the democratic experiment”.
In 1988, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel Beloved, the story of a mother who kills her baby daughter rather than permit her to return to slavery. It became a best-seller and was later made into a film. Many Americans admired her as the country’s greatest writer, including former President Barack Obama.
She was born in 1931. She attended Howard University, an all-black university in Washington, DC. At Howard, she read African, British and American literature, including writers William Faulkner and Virginia Woolf. After a short marriage, she became a single mother of two sons and worked as a book editor in New York.
Several publishers rejected her first book The Bluest Eye, but it impressed The New York Times’ book critic John Leonard, who believed Morrison was an important new voice. He said her writing was “so full of pain and wonder that the novel becomes poetry”.
Morrison enjoyed her literary fame and was proud of her Nobel Prize.

C
Are you a good judge of character? Can you make an accurate judgement of someone’s personality based only on your first impression of them? Interestingly, the answer lies as much in them as it does in you.
One of the first people to try to identify good judges of character was US psychologist Henry F Adams in 1927. His research led him to conclude that people fell into two groups — good judges of themselves and good judges of others. Adams’s research has been widely criticized since then, but he wasn’t entirely wrong about there being two clearly different types.
More on that in a moment, but first we need to define what a good judge of character is. Is it someone who ean read personality or someone who can read emotion? Those are two different skills. Emotions such as anger or joy or sadness can generate easily identifiable physical signs. Most of us would probably be able to accurately identify these signs, even in a stranger. As such, most of us are probably good judges of emotion.
In order to be a good judge of personality, however, there needs to be an interaction with the other person, and that person needs to be a “good target”. “Good targets” are people who reveal relevant and useful signals to their personality. So this means “the good judge” will only manifest when reading “good targets”. This is according to Rogers and Biesanz in their 2019 journal entitled “Reassessing the good judge of personality” “We found consistent, clear and strong evidence that the good judge does exist”, Rogers and Biesanz concluded. But their key finding is that the good judge does not have magical gifts of perception — they are simply able to “detect and use the information provided by the good target”.
So, are first impressions really accurate? Well, if you’re a good judge talking to a “good target”, then it seems the answer is “yes”. And now we know that good judges probably do exist, more research can be done into how they read personality, what kind of people they are — and whether their skills can be taught.
28. What can we learn about Adams from Paragraph 2?
A. He is a good judge of character.
B. He divided psychologists into two groups.
C. His research result has been widely accepted.
D. His research on good judges was partially right.
29. What does the author think of emotion reading?
A. Annoying. B. Joyful.
C. Simple. D. Strange.
30. Which of the following would Rogers and Biesanz agree with?
A. A good target is necessary for personality judgement.
B. A good target needs to get his personality reassessed.
C A good judge can provide useful signals to our personality.
D. A good judge uses the information given by a good target simply.
31. What will the author most probably talk about next?
A. The skills of good judges.
B. The features of good judges.
C. The ways to read personality.
D. The accuracy of first impressions.
D 29. C 30. A 31. B
根据第二段中“His research led him to conclude that people fell into two groups — good judges of themselves and good judges of others. Adams’s research has been widely criticized since then, but he wasn’t entirely wrong about there being two clearly different types.(他的研究使他得出结论,人可以分为两类:善于判断自己和善于判断他人。从那以后,亚当斯的研究受到了广泛的批评,但他认为存在两种明显不同的类型并不是完全错误的)”可知,他的研究成果虽然备受批评,但是对优秀判断者的划分并非完全错误,部分是正确的。故选D项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Emotions such as anger or joy or sadness can generate easily identifiable physical signs. Most of us would probably be able to accurately identify these signs, even in a stranger.(愤怒、快乐或悲伤等情绪可以产生很容易识别的身体信号。我们大多数人可能都能准确地识别出这些迹象,即使是在陌生人身上)”可推知,作者认为情绪判断非常简单。故选C项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“In order to be a good judge of personality, however, there needs to be an interaction with the other person, and that person needs to be a ‘good target’. ‘Good targets” are people who reveal relevant and useful signals to their personality. So this means “the good judge’ will only manifest when reading ‘good targets’. This is according to Rogers and Biesanz in their 2019 journal entitled ‘Reassessing the good judge of personality’(然而,要想很好地判断性格,就需要与他人进行互动,而那个人需要成为一个“好的目标”。“好目标”指的是那些能透露出与其个性相关的有用信号的人。所以这意味着“好判断者”只会在解读“好目标”时表现出来。这是根据罗杰斯和比桑兹在2019年题为《重新评估良好的人格判断》的期刊上发表的观点)”可知,罗杰斯和比桑兹认为一个优秀判断者需要有与之相匹配的“好目标”才能表现出来,由此推知,他们都会赞同“一个‘好的目标’是人格判断的必要条件”这一观点。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“And now we know that good judges probably do exist, more research can be done into how they read personality, what kind of people they are — and whether their skills can be taught.(现在我们知道,好的判断者可能确实存在,更多的研究可以用来研究他们如何解读性格,他们是什么样的人,以及他们的技能是否可以教授)”可推知,接下来需要了解优秀判断者如何进行判断的,他们的性格特点,他们的技巧是否可以传承等,这些都是判断者的特点,也下接下要谈论的内容。故选B项。
D
We are all aware of the damaging pollution that’s created by driving petrol and diesel(柴油) vehicles. Many of the world’s cities are blocked with traffic, creating fumes containing gases such as nitrogen oxides. The solution for a cleaner, greener future could be electric vehicles. But how optimistic should we be? There was much excitement last year when the UK government announced it will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. But is that easier said than done?
The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off. Currently, battery life is an issue ——a fully charged battery won’t take you as far as a full tank of petrol. There are also limited numbers of charging points to plug an electric vehicle into. Of course, technology is always improving. Some of the biggest tech companies, like Google and Tesla, are spending huge amounts of money developing electric cars. And most of the big car manufacturers are now making them too. Colin Herron, a consultant on low-carbon vehicle technology, told the BBC, “The big leap forward will come with solid-state batteries, which will appear first in mobile phones and laptops before they progress to cars. “These will charge more quickly and give cars a bigger range. Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power. But some countries offer incentive, such as cutting prices by reducing import taxes, and not charging for road tax and parking. Some also provide exclusive lanes for electric cars to be driven on, overtaking traditional cars which might be stuck in jams.
These kinds of measures have made Norway the country with the most electric cars per capita(人均) at more than thirty electric cars per 1000 inhabitants. But Colin Herron warns that “electric motoring” doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future. “It’s emission-free motoring, but the car has to be built, the battery has to be built, and the electricity does come from somewhere.” Maybe it’s time to think about making fewer journeys or using public transport.
32. What can we infer from the question at the end of Paragraph 1?
A. It is not easy to obtain a greener future by means of electric vehicles.
B. Electric vehicles may not solve the traffic problems.
C. We should not be too optimistic about the future.
D. It’s not a good idea to replace petrol vehicles with electric ones.
33. What does the underlined word “incentive” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. permission B. encouragement C. admission D. insistence
34. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. Electric motoring will create a zero-carbon future.
B. Putting solid-state batteries in electric cars first will be a “great leap forward”.
C. There are four obstacles on the road to global traffic being totally electric.
D. Electric cars might not get stuck in traffic jams in the future.
35. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Electric Power or Petrol: A Tough Decision to Make
B. Electric Vehicles: A Road to a Greener Future
C. Total Electric Traffic: A Long Way to Go
D Petrol and Diesel Vehicles: A Main Source of Gases
A 33. B 34. D 35. C

根据第一段最后一句“But is that easier said than done?(但这说起来容易做起来难吗?)” 第二段第一句“The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off.(实现全球交通完全电动化的道路还有很长的路要走。)” 故选A。
根据画线词前一句“Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power.(成本是另一个可能阻碍人们转向电力的问题。)”和画线词后的“such as cutting prices by reducing import taxes, and not charging for road tax and parking”可知,画线词后的举例是对incentive的进一步说明,通过降低进口税来降价以及不收取道路税和停车费,这些有助于降低购买和使用成本,有助于激励人们购买,incentive意为“激励措施”,与encouragement(起激励作用的事物)意思最接近。
根据第二段中的“Some also provide exclusive lanes for electric cars to be driven on, overtaking traditional cars which might be stuck in jams.(一些国家还为电动汽车提供专用车道,超越可能陷入拥堵的传统汽车。)”
通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off.(实现全球交通完全电动化的道路还有很长的路要走。)”
Why does our body require warm covers but not our face when it’s cold? The following are the reasons.
Firstly, don’t forget that your head does have some insulation (隔热). ____36____
Secondly, the air temperature near your head won’t be as cold as the room, because the microclimate around your head will be warmed by heat lost from your head and by your exhaled (呼出) breath. ____37____
Then there is physiology. Your sensation of thermal (热的) comfort is primarily driven by skin temperature. This depends on blood flow to the skin. In a cool environment, the hands and feet reduce their blood flow to very low levels. ____38____ So, as the temperature of the rest of the skin falls, that of the head remains higher. This is why you can lose plenty of heat via your head in the cold and should wear a hat.
There are also differences in the impact of different body regions on the overall sensation of cold and thermal comfort. The temperature of the hands and feet dominate your overall perception of how cold you are. ____39____ In a cooling environment, the temperature of the lower back and chest determines the loss of thermal comfort, and during mild exposure to cold, local warming of the chest, rather than the face, produces a strong sensation of comfort.
____40____ So, it is a good idea to keep the body warm in bed, then you can leave the head above the covers. Your nose may get cold, but it won’t stop you sleeping, and it is good to breathe fresh air!
A. Remember to put a hat on.
B. It often has hair and is insulated by it.

E. This is why you can’t fall asleep until your feet warm up in bed.
F. In contrast, the blood flow to the head doesn’t decrease as much.
G. Also, remember that the face is adapted to exposing to the elements.
B 37. C 38. F 39. E 40. G
上文“Firstly, don’t forget that your head does have some insulation.”(首先,别忘了你的头是有隔热层的。) 根据B选项中“It often has hair and is insulated by it.”(它通常有头发,用它来隔热)出现的hair和insulated与上文一致。故选B。
根据空前“because the microclimate around your head will be warmed by heat lost from your head and by your exhaled (呼出) breath.(其次,你头部附近的空气温度不会像房间里那么冷,因为你头部周围的小气候会被你头部散发的热量和你肺部呼出的气加热。)”
根据空前“In a cool environment, the hands and feet reduce their blood flow to very low levels.(在凉爽环境中,手和脚的血流量会降低到很低的水平。)”和选项F“In contrast, the blood flow to the head doesn’t decrease as much.(相比之下,流向头部的血液不会减少太多。)”
根据空前“The temperature of the hands and feet dominate your overall perception of how cold you are.(手和脚的温度主导着你对自己有多冷的整体感知。)”
根据空后“So, it is a good idea to keep the body warm in bed, then you can leave the head above the covers.(所以,在床上保持身体温暖是一个好主意,然后你可以让头部露出被子。)”

Good morning, everyone.
I’m Li Hua from Xinhua Middle School. It is my great honor to make a speech about “Let’s Ride Bicycles” here. As is known to all, while cars have become a popular means of transport, they have also caused some problems such as air pollution and traffic jams. How can we solve the problems then?
As far as I’m concerned, riding bicycles is a good solution. For one thing, bicycles don’t need petrol and they are energy-saving. For another, bicycles are environmentally friendly because they won’t give off waste gas. What’s more, riding bicycles is a good way to exercise. Therefore, let’s take the responsibility to build up a low-carbon city by riding bicycles.
That is all. Thank you!

The whole class burst out laughing as Mohi rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped loose-fitting pajama (睡衣) top underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green sandals (凉鞋) that were two sizes too big. The physics teacher’s hand froze in the middle of writing a formula on the blackboard.
Mohi said in a quiet voice, “Sorry, teacher,”and ran with quick short steps to his seat. Mr. Tan glared at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly died down. Mohi’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Mohi’s late arrival and his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing. That day, it was the loose-fitting pajama top and green sandals.
Mohi lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would yell his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry bunch in the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Mohi was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Hamed, who sat next to Mohi, tried to be his friend.
The following Monday, Mohi did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Hamed decided to walk over to Mohi’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Mohi must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Hamed let himself in. He called Mohi’s name a few times but there was no response.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
The music played on.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Before Teacher’s Day concert, Hamed convinced the class to let Mohi perform.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The music played on. Hamed peered in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Mohi was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played flawlessly so much so that it sounded like a recording. Then an idea hit Hamed. It was the tradition of the school to have a concert for the teachers. Every class had to contribute an item. It was a good chance for Mohi to show his talent and be accepted by his classmates. Thinking of that, Hamed left quietly.
Before Teacher’s Day concert, Hamed convinced the class to let Mohi perform. Short of ideas, the class agreed. On the day of the concert, both the teachers and students were surprised to see the school’s clumsiest student walking on stage with a violin. When he started to play, the audience fell silent. Jaws dropped. As the last note ended, there was a moment of silence. Then the audience erupted into thunderous applause. Mohi became a sensation and had many fans in his final year of school. Mohi and Hamed became the best of friends eventually.

She attended Howard University an all-black university in Washington, DC.

C. A good judge can provide useful signals to our personality.
D. A good judge uses the information given by a good target simply.
31. What will the author most probably talk about next?
A. The skills of good judges.
B. The features of good judges.
C. The ways to read personality.
D. The accuracy of first impressions.

A. Electric Power or Petrol: A Tough Decision to Make
B Electric Vehicles: A Road to a Greener Future
C. Total Electric Traffic: A Long Way to Go
D. Petrol and Diesel Vehicles: A Main Source of Gases

Why does our body require warm covers but not our face when it’s cold? The following are the reasons.
Firstly, don’t forget that your head does have some insulation (隔热). ____36____
Secondly the air temperature near your head won’t be as cold as the room, because the microclimate around your head will be warmed by heat lost from your head and by your exhaled (呼出) breath.
C. The latter is warmed in the lungs to about 33℃.
D. There is nothing worse than going out in the cold with wet hair.
E. This is why you can’t fall asleep until your feet warm up in bed.
F. In contrast, the blood flow to the head doesn’t decrease as much.
G. Also, remember that the face is adapted to exposing to the elements.
