A theory of emotion
Two scientists called Stanley Schachter and Jerome Singer developed the two-factor theory of emotion in 1962. They said that emotions are formed in two parts. First, the body has a physical response to a threat and then the mind considers the physical response as an emotion, which is then felt by the person. For example, imagine you are walking through a forest and you see a bear. Seeing it would probably start a physical response, such as your heart beating very fast and sweat breaking out. Your mind then decides that this is fear, which you feel as an emotion.
A new study has suggested that the key to reducing feelings of anger is not venting (letting the angry emotions out) but doing calming activities such as yoga or meditation.
The study was published in March by Sophie Kjaervik and Brad Bushman from Ohio State University in the US. They wanted to explore the popular theory that venting (expressing) anger is a good way of reducing it. Examples of venting anger include shouting or hitting something like a cushion, so that you let go of the emotion and therefore don’t feel it any more. The pair looked at 154 other studies on anger. These involved 10, 189 people, and included a variety of ages and backgrounds. In their study, Kjaervik and Bushman define anger as “an emotional response (反应) to a real or imagined threat (威胁)”. They used a theory of emotion (情绪假说) that says emotions are partly felt in your body and partly in your mind.
The scientists looked at the other studies to see how different activities influenced anger. They found that activities such as running or boxing—which are often thought to be good for dealing with anger—weren’t very good at reducing it. In fact, some of these activities actually made it worse because they increased physical responses in the body that are linked to feeling angry. For example, they made people’s hearts beat faster. However, activities that decreased physical responses in the body did help to reduce feelings of anger. These included activities that slow the heart rate, such as deep breathing, meditation and yoga. Bushman says activities that increase physical responses may be good for heart health but are “definitely not the best way to reduce anger”.
The team found jogging was most likely to increase anger. However, some heart-rate increasing activities—like ball games and team sports—could reduce anger.
34. What is the main finding of the new study?
A. A new method of venting anger. B. A new method of reducing anger.
C. Good activities to vent anger. D. Good activities to reduce anger.
35. What can we learn about calming activities?

C. They are good for mind health. D. They are good for heart health.
36. According to Schachter and Singer’s theory, what happens first if you see a snake and feel afraid?
A. You get the feeling of fear. B. You get the feeling of calm.

(2024·江苏扬州·中考统考真题D篇)Think about how much time you spent outside last week. Really “outside.” Walking from the car into the mall doesn’t count.
Now think about how much time you spent indoors—on the Internet or playing video games or watching TV.
You may say, “I play inside more than outside and I like to play games on the computer.”
If so, it’s likely that you spent more time inside four walls than outside in fresh air. Kids today spend two fewer hours per week on sports and outdoor activities than kids did 20 years ago. That’s according to a University of Michigan study. Non-moving activities are more popular. The costs “include overweight, greater stress, higher rates of physical and emotional illness and less joy…,” says Richard Louv, writer of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder.
Play is important, even for adults.
Outdoor activity betters your senses. The next time you sit down to message your friends, take note of your senses during and after your texting. Then do the same experiment after you’ve done something outside. You will find being outdoors brings the senses to life. “Hiking, exploring, and fishing help hone all of your senses,” says Betsy Keller. She’s a professor of exercise and sports sciences at Ithaca College in New York. “Smell, sight... all of your senses are in use when you’re outside.”
Outdoor play frees your mind. Are you stressed out? Having trouble devoting your mind to what you’re doing? Too much time indoors — away from the natural world — may be a cause. Louv uses a term to describe the set of problems caused by too much time indoors: nature deficit disorder. He says, “I use it to describe the price we pay for being so separated from nature.”
Spending time outdoors brings you closer to the environment. When you’re out, breathe in fresh air, hear the leaves crackle underfoot and search cool birds and plants in the woods. It can help you feel more connected to the natural world. No woods nearby? Nature can be found right outside your back door or in your local park.
So the next time you sit down to spend quality time with a video game, consider treating yourself to a little outdoor play instead.
42. How does the writer first introduce the topic of outdoor play?
A. By presenting the results of a recent study.
B. By introducing different kinds of outdoor play.
C. By inviting the reader to think about his or her own case.
D. By telling the reader outdoor play is good for body and mind.
43. Which sentence should go in the empty box in Paragraph 5?
A. Outdoor play helps form relationships. B. Just getting outdoors does wonders.
C. Nature can remind us of life beyond our worries. D. The outdoors is the best place to practise physical skills.
44. Which word is closest to the meaning of “hone” in Paragraph 6?
A. improve B. limit C. produce D. organize
45. Which of the following is a good way to enjoy outdoor play?
A. Walking from your car into the mall.
B. Spending your quality time with TV drama series.
C. Playing a video game of making sandcastles by the beach.
D. Watching in your local park how fast the clouds are moving.

(2024·江苏连云港·中考统考真题D篇)As we know, eating vegetables is good for us. Why do some people like them but others don’t? A new study has found that other people’s likes and dislikes could be a reason. According to the research, people who eat vegetables and show a clear dislike for them can influence others.
People may make facial expressions (面部表情) when eating. How does it affect a person watching them? A team of scientists in the UK did a study. They asked more than 200 young women to watch videos of other adults eating broccoli (西兰花). The people in the videos had different expressions while eating. They would smile, seem neutral (neither happy nor sad), or look disgusted.
The study found that when people in the videos look disgusted while eating broccoli, people watching them began to like broccoli less. The opposite was not true, however. When someone had a smile while eating broccoli, people watching them did not like broccoli more.
By watching others, humans learn which behaviors will be good for them. Scientists believe that people might avoid food that looks terrible. In this way, people can protect themselves from eating something bad or dangerous.
The research focused only on adults, but the team believe that the results could also work for children. This means, if children see their parents not enjoying certain foods, including vegetables, they might not want to eat them either.
How does the behavior of adults influence children’s choices of food? The team said they hope to understand more about it. This could help find ways to encourage children to eat more healthy foods.
37. What does the underlined word “disgusted” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Excited. B. Amazed. C. Unhappy. D. Untidy.

Confucianism(儒家思想)has been followed by Chinese people for more than two thousand years.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, Confucianism teaches the Five Constants(五常). These are ren, yi, li, zhi and xin. They are general virtues(美德)around the world. The most important two are ren and li.
Ren is the feeling of care and love we should have for others. Confucius explained ren could best be understood as loving others. He is famous for teaching people “What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others”. It is quite similar to what is known in the West as the Golden Rule(treat others as you wish to be treated).
While the meaning of ren is easy to understand, li is a little harder to express. It can be thought of as duty or even respect. Generally, li is the way we should connect with people in our everyday life. In Confucian writings, discussions about li include the proper way to drink tea and how to remember ancestors(祖先). While ren is mostly about our opinions and feelings, li is about how we express our opinions and feelings towards others and towards the world around us.
Perhaps the most well-known Confucian virtue is xiao. This is the duty children have to their parents. Xiao means loving, respecting, obeying and taking care of one’s parents in their old age. In Confucianism, xiao is important for a harmonious(和谐的)society: Without it, the whole world would fall into a mess.
14. Which are the most important of the Five Constants?
A. Ren and yi. B. Ren and li. C. Li and xin. D. Yi and zhi.
15. What is the best Chinese for the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?
A. 博学于文,约之以礼。 B. 学而不思则罔,思而不学则殆。
C. 己所不欲,勿施于人。 D. 君子和而不同,小人同而不和。
16. Which of the following is an example of li?
A. Building a peaceful society. B. Taking care of one’s children.
C. Obeying rules for drinking tea. D. Learning all through one’s life.
17. What does the passage mainly tell us about Confucianism?
A. Its general virtues. B. Its long history. C. Its new challenges. D. Its golden rules.

(2023·江苏苏州·中考统考真题C篇)Teenagers need eight to ten hours of sleep per night. However, in adolescence(青春期)changes to the body’s sleep cycle make it difficult for teens to fall asleep early. Many cannot fall asleep until 10:30 p.m. or even later and most of them will feel sleepy if they have to get up too early.
Scientists recommend that both middle and high schools begin no earlier than 8:30 a.m. Later school start times support the natural needs of teenagers and increase their sleeping time.
Here are some other benefits of later school start times:
More time for a healthy breakfast
When running late in the mornings, students are likely to go without breakfast. With an empty stomach, one finds it difficult to focus(集中)in class. When they are always in a hurry, students may form unhealthy eating habits.
With extra time before going to school, students can eat a well-balanced breakfast and focus more on learning.
Fewer behavioral(行为的)problems
Teens experience mood changes as a common result of this special period of life. Less sleep may cause worries, stress and unhappiness.
When they get enough sleep, students are calm and peaceful and their moods do not change suddenly. They’re less likely to feel worried, unhappy or get angry. For parents, children with more sleep are easier to live with.
Better performance(表现)in study
Sleep loss hurts attention, memory and brain development. Students with less sleep have difficulty paying attention in class and are likely to have lower grades. Students with enough sleep can be more energetic during the day and more willing to learn. They are also less likely to fall asleep in class and more able to understand what they learn.
In conclusion, starting school later helps students get a better night’s sleep. It improves their chances of eating, behaving and performing better.
18. According to the passage, what may cause teenagers to stay up?
A. Their low grades. B. Their empty stomachs.
C. Their body’s sleep cycle. D. Their heavy homework.
19. How can sleep loss influence students’ study?
A. It gives them much energy. B. It does harm to the brain.
C. It saves more time for study. D. It improves their memory.
20. What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To explain reasons for students’ stress. B. To describe bad habits caused by sleep loss.
C. To discuss scientists’ research on healthy food. D. To introduce benefits of later school start times.
21. In which part of the website can you probably find this passage?
A. Education. B. Fashion. C. Sports. D. Technology.

Pet parrots that are allowed to make video calls to other birds show signs of feeling less isolated, according to scientists.
The study, which involved giving the birds a computer that they could use to make video calls, found that they began to engage in more social behaviors including preening, singing and playing. The birds were given a choice of which “friend” to call on a touchscreen computer and the study showed that the parrots that called other birds most often were the most popular choices.
Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas, of the University of Glasgow and a co-author of the study, said that video calls had helped many people feel less isolated in the last few years. She added, “There are 20 million parrots living in people’s homes in the USA, and we wanted to explore whether those birds might benefit(受益)from video calling too. If we gave them the chance to call other parrots, would they choose to do so, and would the experience benefit the parrots and their caregivers?”
Their study of 18 pet parrots suggested that there were, indeed, benefits for the birds. In the wild, many species of parrots live in large groups, but as pets they are, kept alone or in a small group. Living alone can cause birds, to develop mental problems, which include rocking, walking back and forth, or self-harming behaviors such as feather-plucking.
The parrots first learned to ring a bell and then touch a photo of another bird on the screen of a computer to make a call to that bird, with the help of their owners. In total the birds made 147 calls to each other during the study, while owners took detailed notes on the birds’ behavior and the researchers later reviewed the video footage.
Jennifer Cunha of Northeastern University said that the parrots “seemed to know” that they were communicating with other birds. “All the bird owners in the study said they valued the experience, and would want to continue using the system with their parrots in the future,” she said.
“I was quite surprised at so many different behaviors,” said Hirskyj-Douglas. “Some would sing, some would play around and go upside down, others would want to show another bird their toys.”

(2023·江苏常州·中考统考真题B篇)Sending astronauts to Mars is a big challenge. Astronauts will have to take everything they need, including food, air and water. The room inside the spaceship is too limited to hold many things. So packing a spaceship is a huge challenge for a trip to Mars.
Six astronauts on an eight-month trip to Mars will need at least 18,000 kilograms of water for drinking and washing. They’ll also need water to protect themselves from space rays which can pass right through spaceship walls and harm astronauts’ living cells. But a layer of water placed around the ship can stop the harm.
That’s a lot of water. And sending water into space is too expensive. It costs $33,000 to send one cup of water to Mars. The more you take, the more it costs. We have the technology to get to Mars, but the problem is that it’s too expensive.
But Flynn, an engineer at NASA, thinks he has a way of solving the problem. Instead of building a heavy spaceship and packing it full of stuff(物料), why not use the stuff as part of the spaceship?
Imagine a spaceship that blows up like a balloon. Inside, the walls have pockets like a big honeycomb(蜂巢). These hold lots of plastic bags filled with water, dried food and algae(水藻). All these make hard walls and great radiation(辐射)protection. And stopping radiation doesn’t influence the food or water itself—it’s safe to eat and drink. And what if the same water could be reused again and again? Flynn and his team call their packed-pocket idea Water Walls.
Making oxygen and taking away CO2—the waste gas you breathe out—is another problem in space. “Water Walls will take away CO2 the same way it’s done here on our Earth—with living plants,” Flynn says. Living plants take in CO2 to make their food, and give off oxygen. “Plants are hard to grow in a spacecraft, so we use algae,” he says.
Algae are tiny plants that live in water. The algae will live in bags in the walls too, fed by human waste and sunlight, eating up CO2 and making oxygen for the astronauts to breathe.
Flynn thinks his onboard recycling system has many advantages. He hopes it will help make flying to Mars a reality very soon.
26. What does the underlined phrase “packing a spaceship” in paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. repairing things in a spaceship B. recycling things in a spaceship
C. checking things in a spaceship D. putting things into a spaceship
27. What is the advantage of Flynn’s system?
A. Cost is saved. B. Travelling time is saved.
C. Plastic bags are saved. D. Food is saved.
28. What is one purpose of Flynn’s idea of Water Walls?
A. To prevent space rays during the space trip. B. To make the whole spaceship stronger.
C. To control the temperature in the spaceship. D. To produce water in the spaceship.
29. Why are algae put in the plastic bags?
A. To prevent water from being polluted. B. To serve as food for astronauts.
C. To provide oxygen for astronauts. D. To help other plants grow in a spaceship.

When Singaporean Tong Weiqiang watched Hong Kong wuxia dramas more than 10 years ago, he was greatly impressed. He then pioneered a local movement to support hanfu, or traditional Chinese clothes, and started the Han Cultural Society of Singapore in 2012 to attract more fans. “Many people in our cultural society first learned about hanfu from these Chinese wuxia dramas,” he told China Daily.
In recent years, with the increased popularity of Chinese culture through dramas and online literature, wuxia-related content has started to regain popularity with viewers all over the world, including those in Southeast Asia, According to China Daily, Wuxiaworld, a web novel site started by Chinese-American Lai Jingping in 2014, attracts millions of page views per day from users in more than 100 countries.
One reason for its popularity is that wuxia works bring them fresh new experiences. The economies(经济)of many Southeast Asian countries are based on agriculture. As China Daily mentioned, what really interests them is the different lifestyles of wuxia heroes they have never experienced.
New thoughts and ideas in wuxia works also help it go a step further abroad. Unlike traditional wuxia, the modern form of wuxia which has gained popularity in Southeast Asia is a broader idea that includes xianxia and xuanhuan.
But there’s one thing that never changes-its core(核心)spirit. Mixing the Chinese characters “wu” and “xia”, these works always keep the spirit of the Chinese heroes fighting against social injustice(不公正)and beating bad people, noted the Interact Kungfu website.
“Although wuxia is a special part of Chinese culture, the core spirit of pursuing(追求)freedom and justice is generally accepted by people all over the world,” Lily Lee, president of You-Cloud which operates AppGrowing, told China Daily.
30. Why does the writer tell the story of Tong Weiqiang?
A. To provide the background. B. To raise up the question.
C. To lead into the main topic. D. To introduce the main character.
31. Which of the following is one reason for wuxia’s popularity?
A. People’s wishes to change others’ lifestyles.
B. The economic conditions of different countries.
C. The differences between xianxia and xuanhuan.

(2023·江苏常州·中考统考真题D篇)Scientists who study happiness have evidence(证据)to show that being kind to others can result in happiness. Acts as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone can lift a person’s mood, for example. Everyday life is full of chances for such actions, yet people do not always make the most of them.
In studies, behavioral scientist Nicholas Epley and I examined a possible explanation: people who do kind acts underestimate(低估)how much the ones receiving kindness value their behavior.
In the experiments(实验), about 1, 000 people were asked to do some actions to make someone else feel good. We asked both the person performing(执行)the kind act and the one receiving it to answer some questions. The performers were asked to report their own experience and to guess how the receivers might feel. We wanted to understand how valuable people considered these acts to be, so both the performer and receiver had to rate(评分)how “big” the act seemed. In all cases, we compared the performer’s expectations of the receiver’s mood with the receiver’s actual(实际的)experience.
For one, both performers and receivers experienced more positive(积极的)moods. For another, the receivers felt much better than the kind performers expected. The receivers also rated these acts as “bigger” than the people performing them did.
At first, we studied acts of the kindness done for familiar people, such as friends, classmates or family. But we found that performers underestimated their positive influences on strangers as well. In one experiment, performers in a public park gave away hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day to people that just happened to be nearby. Again, the kind act brought more happiness than the performers expected.
These findings suggest that what might seem small could matter a great deal to the person we do it for. Considering these warm actions can improve our own mood and brighten the day of another person, why not choose kindness when we can?
33. What did the receivers do in the experiments?
A. They showed kindness to others.
B. They guessed the performers’ feelings.
C. They rated how valuable the performers’ act of kindness was.
D. They compared the performers’ expectations with their actual results.
34. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Different purposes of the research. B. More evidence for the research results.
C Possible influences of the research findings. D. Another explanation of the research methods.
35. What is the writer’s attitude(态度)towards showing kindness to others?
A. Supportive. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Uninterested.
36. What is the main idea of this article?
A. Being kind can reduce one’s happiness as expected.
B. Kindness can have unexpectedly positive influences.
C. Choosing kindness is more difficult than expected.
D. Showing kindness is more valuable than receiving it.

The nose helps us a lot. It tells us when dinner is almost ready and leads the way to sweet cakes. It also tells us to keep away from bad smells. But do you know the interesting facts about something that smells bad?
Fish
You might have noticed that fish smell unpleasant sometimes. Fish from the ocean smell the strongest. These saltwater fish have a chemical(化学物质)called TMAO. While we prepare fish for cooking, TMAO is already changing into other things. One is called TMA. It smells super smelly. Usually, before cooks make saltwater fish a dish, they wash fish. And most of the TMA can be washed away. Cooks also add lemon to make the fish less smelly.
Feet
Foot sweat(脚汗)itself does not have a bad smell at first. But it has food and water that the bacteria(细菌)need. With them, the bacteria give off some smell. Most shoes often keep sweat in them. That makes shoes and socks warm and wet—a place where bacteria can grow. Different types of bacteria give off different smells. That’s why feet may smell like bad vegetables, smelly eggs or other smelly things.
Eggs
Many things smell terrible when they go bad. But a bad egg gives off the most famous bad smell of all and draws people’s attention. When an egg goes bad, the bacteria help to change the sulfur(硫)in its white part into sulfur and hydrogen(硫化氢). And it smells really bad. The nose just warns us away from it because too much sulfur and hydrogen will harm our health.

(2023·江苏南通·中考统考真题C篇)Climate change(气候变化)has brought a serious warning to the living areas of the Siberian crane, increasing the need to better protect the birds and their migratory channels(迁徙路径), an expert said.
The Siberian crane breeds(繁殖)in northeast Siberia in Russia and flies to Poyang Lake for the winter in East China’s Jiangxi Province. About 95 percent of the birds spend the season in Poyang.
Qian Fawen, a research professor from the National Bird Banding Center of China, said that Poyang’s water levels decide whether it is suitable for the birds to live there. However, climate change has made the levels change often. “In some years, the lake experiences floods; in others, it experiences droughts. Both of these situations create food shortages in the cranes’ living area,” he said.
The Siberian crane is listed as seriously endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List. “We need to protect their living area, which is mainly wetland, so that we can protect them,” Qian said.
In the recently announced National Action Plan for the Protection of Bird Migration Channels(2021-35), 1, 140 places in China were considered as important breeding grounds, wintering grounds and staying stops, including Poyang and the Yellow River wetland in Ningxia. The plan said that the government should watch and count the number of migratory birds and pay farmers for losses caused by the birds.
Since China joined the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1992, it has designated(指定)202,600 hectares of wetland as Wetlands of International Importance. They store and clean water, keep all kinds of living things, help store floods and prevent droughts. According to a plan announced by the central government in October, by 2025, China will have protected 55 percent of its wetlands.
After the Wetlands Protection Law, the nation’s first law to protect wetlands, was introduced on June 1, 2022, complete protection was strengthened. The law clearly explained what the government should do and introduced strict punishment for people who destroy wetland areas. It limits building at important national wetlands and it doesn’t allow harmful activities, including using them as farmlands, leaving wastewater everywhere, harvesting and fishing too much.
Key nature reserve management offices in China have reported more birds wintering in the nation’s wetlands, including some new rare kinds. ___▲_

(2023·江苏扬州·中考统考真题B篇)What would happen if you tried to blow a soap(肥皂)bubble in below-freezing weather? Would it freeze and fall to the ground? Would you have to hit it with a stone to break it? These questions came into my mind one cold winter day. It was too cold to play in the snow, but it was a perfect time to experiment with blowing frozen bubbles.
To blow frozen bubbles, I had to wait until the air outside was very cold. For this activity, that meant 10 degrees below 0 Fahrenheit or colder. I didn’t have the bubble things that come in a bottle, so I used dish-washing soap. Adding a drop of glycerin made the soap work even better. I chose a place out of the wind, and blew bubbles the same way I always do. I watched to see what would happen. Here’s what I learned.
If the temperature is low enough, the skin of the bubble frosts(结霜)over, becoming cloudy instead of clear. And what about those rainbow swirls(漩涡状物体)that you see in soap bubbles? The rainbow colors stay even(均匀的)when the bubbles frost, but they don’t spin anymore. The bubbles still float in the air. They don’t fall to the ground any faster than they would on a warm summer day.
When these frozen bubbles break, they don’t turn into tiny drops of soap as summer bubbles do. They turn into shiny rainbow pieces and fly slowly to the ground. Sometimes a frozen bubble will roll across the snow without breaking. If it breaks, it may leave a strong bubble skin on the ground. Leave the bubble alone and it may stay there for a long time.
Sometimes I could catch a bubble and hold it until the heat of my hand made it pop.
I learned one other thing about blowing frozen bubbles. It’s so much fun. I want to try it again next year!

B. Making bubbles that will stay longer.
C. Inventing a new kind of soap that makes clearer bubbles.
D. Finding out what happens to bubbles in freezing temperatures.
36. According to the passage, what will happen if you blow frozen soap bubbles?
A. Cold enough, the skin of the bubbles will stay clear.
B. When the bubbles frost, the rainbow colors will spin faster.
C. A frozen bubble may roll across the snow without breaking.
D. When these frozen bubbles break, they turn into tiny drops of soap.
37. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A science club B. Broken bubbles C. A happy child D. Frozen bubbles

(2023·江苏扬州·中考统考真题D篇)The scientific method is used for simple experiments that students may do in the classroom or very difficult experiments that scientists are doing all over the world. It is a way of thinking that helps you to avoid drawing incorrect conclusions.
There are usually four steps in the scientific method, including observation(观察), hypothesis(假设), experiment, and conclusion. The steps may not always be completed in the same order, but the first step is usually observation and asking a question about your observation. For example, you had a sick stomach, and ate a candy bar. An hour later, you observed that you felt much better. Here, you can ask a question, such as, “What makes a sick stomach feel better?”
The second step is to state a possible answer to the question, or a hypothesis, such as “” A good hypothesis includes three things: The explanation for the observations, it is able to be tested, and it will usually predict new outcomes or conclusions.
The third step is the experiment, to test the hypothesis. An experiment is a test which will either challenge or support the hypothesis. The hypothesis will then be true or false.
The final step is to think about what happened when you tested the hypothesis and draw a conclusion. The conclusion will either clearly support the hypothesis or it will not. If the results support the hypothesis, a conclusion can be written and you can share it with the rest of the world. If it does not support the hypothesis, you may choose to change the hypothesis or write a new one based on what was learned during the experiment.
42. Which sentence best expresses the main idea of the passage?

Poems from Tang and Song dynasties, operas from Yuan dynasty, and novels from Ming and Qing dynasties are very famous in China’s history. Today, I’d like to recommend Song of Autumn, one of the poems by Liu Yuxi(772-842), a famous poet and writer in the mid Tang dynasty.
Just as shown in the first line of the poem, most ancient poets liked to describe autumn as a sad time, but in this poem the season appears differently. In Liu’s eyes, autumn, full of life and hope, is even better than spring morning. He describes the bright scene of a crane riding the clouds and flying into the blue sky.
With his poems paying special attention to expressing personal feelings, as well as the daily life of common people, Liu wrote poems with beautiful music-like words. You may feel it in this poem. Though being translated thoughtfully by experienced Xu Yuanchong, the poem still reads not so beautifully as that in Chinese. I personally think that English is sometimes not so powerful as Chinese.
Here is another example, in Liu’s essay An Eulogium on a Humble Cell(《陋室铭》), with less than 100 words, he shows a lively picture of his humble cell. However, it also shows how he was pleased with the poor and simple life. People may find it strange that one can feel happy living in such a humble cell. Learning from his famous sentence, “be fragrant because of my virtues”(斯是陋室, 惟吾德馨), I think to be a respectable man is more important than to live in big houses, to wear beautiful clothes, to enjoy delicious food, and even to gain knowledge.
31. Which dynasty is the poem Song of Autumn written in?
A. Song. B. Yuan. C. Ming. D. Tang.
32. How was autumn in Liu’s eyes at that time?
A. He thought it was a sad time. B. He thought that autumn was rather cloudy.
C. He thought Spring was better. D. He thought autumn was a hopeful season.
33. Which of the following is the feature of Liu Yuxi’s works according to the passage?
A. Expressing personal feelings. B. Describing daily life of young people.
C. Picturing blue sky and a crane. D. Writing songs according to music.
34. How did Liu feel about living in a humble cell in the writer’s opinion?
A. Strange. B. Unhappy. C. Satisfied. D. Lonely.
35. Influenced by Liu Yuxi, which of the following does the writer think is the most important?
A. To be a respectable man. B. To live in a big house.
C. To wear beautiful clothes. D. To gain more knowledge.

Now, primary students learn cooking at school. It has been discussed by teachers and parents. Some think that it is a useful skill for students, while others think it’s a waste of time, some even think it’s just a show. But do they really understand cooking?
It’s been said that good cooking is an art form. The truth is that it’s much more than that. Then talking about different foods from all around the world, or cultures and histories of dishes, students are connected to the world and learning history and culture in a new field. Then learning cooking, students measure(称量)materials from time to time, or find oil and water don’t usually mix. Students are also learning maths and science in practice.
The importance of failures in making food is as much as successes. Li Mei, 11, was crazy about the yummy cakes made by her father and wanted to make one on her own. But when taking her cake out, she was frustrated(沮丧的)to find that the cake was hard and black at the bottom. Her father told her when he was 13, he tried to make cakes, but wasted boxes of eggs. Then together with Father, Li Mei found out what had gone wrong and succeeded in making one. Li Mei learned in the failure of cooking, and could be braver to face failures.
Apart from the practical skills, cooking builds character. It encourages kids to work with others. It also encourages them to be open to foods they might not have tried. Though being good to our health, carrots were hated by 12-year-old Xiao Lei. But he started to love them after he made a salad with them. By cooking, students put down their phones and work together with family members in the kitchen. By cooking, students form the habit of doing labor work. As a part of labor education, cooking is a way to teach kids vital 21st century skills, such as creativity, teamwork and so on. If these skills aren’t taught to today’s students, they might hardly survive in the future.
36. What does the writer think of “learning cooking” in primary schools?
A. It needs better understanding. B. It’s just a useful skill for students.
C. It’s really a waste of time. D. It must be canceled as a show.
37. What’s the relationship between cooking and other subjects according to the passage?
A. B.
C. D.
38. What does the writer think of failure in cooking?
A. Cooking can help people avoid failure. B. There is no failure without success.
C. Failure is as important as success. D. Cooking is sure to be failure at last.
39. Why does the writer mention the change of Xiao Lei?
A. To show us carrots are good for our health. B. To encourage kids to work with others.
C. To educate kids to be open to different foods. D. To teach us how to make a salad with carrots.
40. What does the underlined word vital in the last paragraph mean?
A. Necessary. B. Difficult. C. Creative. D. Simple.

I love snakes, while my mother does not. Lots of people who are afraid of snakes have never seen one. Neither has my mother. So where does the fear come from?
To find out the answer, scientists put pictures with snakes, pandas, cats, flowers and many other things in front of a group of people of all ages, even babies. People found snakes faster than flowers. It wasn’t just snakes. They found “black faces”, another example, spiders(蜘蛛), faster than “safe” things like flowers. It seems we find things that might be dangerous to us faster. Maybe we are born to be afraid of them.
Scientists also found people learned to fear snakes faster. Why did they fear snakes? Most of them said that in their experiences, they were influenced by the scared voice and faces of those who met snakes, but wasn’t bitten by snakes. After all, if we had to be bitten by a snake to learn that it’s dangerous, we might learn our lesson too late.
So why is it important whether we are afraid of snakes or not? It may not matter much to us, but it is really very important to snakes. People protect animals they like, not animals they fear. Snakes may not be as cute as pandas, but they’re just of the same importance to the environment. Snakes eat insects and mice that are pests(害虫)to humans. Snakes are also food for other animals, so, when we kill snakes, we’re breaking the balance.
How can we reduce our fears to give snakes a chance? Scientists did a study recently. Some volunteer students went on a field trip. With the help of safety tips, everyone could safely touch and hold a snake. It turns out that snakes aren’t so bad when you know the way to stay with them. Most people who were afraid of snakes before the field trip weren’t afraid afterwards. In fact, snakes even became some students’ favorite animal. Hmm, maybe I should take my mom on the next field trip.
41. In the writer’s opinion, what are “black faces”?
A. Things make people feel dangerous. B. Faces of animals in the picture.
C. Things that have black faces. D. Faces of people in danger.
42. What does the writer mean by saying “we might learn our lesson too late” in the third paragraph?
A. We might never see any snakes. B. We are not in danger any longer.
C. We might not fear snakes any more. D. We might already be killed by snakes.
43. How do the scientists help people reduce the fear of snakes?
A. By teaching people skills of killing snakes.
B. By driving snakes away through a field trip.
C. By teaching them the right way to stay with them.
D. By giving snakes a chance to show they are good.
44. What can we learn from scientists after reading the passage?
A. Don’t be afraid and find chances in danger. B. Always remember to give people safety tips.
C. Face failures bravely and never give up trying. D. Find problems and do research to solve them.
45. Which fits the scientists’ idea best?
People 1._______
So people are afraid of snakes and they 2.______
So snakes aren’t protected by people though they 3._______
People learn to fear snakes from others’ experiences.
a. are born to fear snakes b. need to be protected c. don’t protect animals they fear

(2023·江苏宿迁·中考统考真题C篇)Family is very important for everyone, no matter where you are from. So in both East and West, people have festivals to celebrate family reunions(团聚). These festivals include the Mid-Autumn Festival in China and Thanksgiving Day in the US. How are they celebrated and what are the differences? Let’s take a look.
Sharing the moonlight
The Mid-Autumn Festival is the second most important traditional festival in China after the Spring Festival. It’s on the 15th day of the eighth month of Chinese lunar calendar. In ancient China, the day was considered as a harvest festival since fruits, vegetables and grain(谷物)had been collected from the fields. All the family got together and had a big dinner. They ate a special festival food-moon cakes and enjoyed the full moon.
On that day, the moon is full. The full moon is a symbol for family reunions which mean tuanyuan in Chinese. Now people also celebrate the festival by getting together and having a big dinner.
When it gets dark, people look up at the full moon, eating moon cakes and missing friends and relatives who are far from home. “We wish each other a long life so as to share the beauty of this graceful moonlight, even though miles apart!” wrote Su Shi, a famous Song Dynasty poet.
Showing thanks
Thanksgiving Day is one of the biggest holidays in the US. It’s on the fourth Thursday of November. People visit their friends and relatives to remind themselves that they are lucky to have happiness, health and family and also to have a roof over their heads.
In 1621, about 100 English people took a ship, the Mayflower, and arrived in the northeastern US. The winter there was very cold and life was hard. As the American Indians helped them a lot, the English people asked them to have a big meal with then in order to express their thanks. The celebration lasted for three days.
Today, people usually have a family meal on Thanksgiving Day. They enjoy delicious food such as pumpkin scorn and a big, golden turkey.
There are other traditions on the day. For example, the turkey has a V-shaped bone in the breast. It’s called a wishbone. After roasting(烤), two persons each take one end of the bone. They make a wish and then pull it. If one gets the larger part of the bone, he or she will get good luck.
The most important part of Thanksgiving Day is to say “thanks”— this is the spirit of the holiday. People also like to watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV.
38. Why did people celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival in ancient China?

(2023·江苏徐州·中考统考真题B篇)Poems play with sounds, words, and grammar. That makes poems difficult to write but very interesting to read. They use colours, feelings, experiences, and images to paint a picture in your mind. Let’s have a look at the following Chinese classical poem:
On the Stork Tower
By Wang Zhihuan
The sun along the mountain bows,
The Yellow River seawards flows,
You can enjoy a grander sight,
If you climb to a greater height,
Translated by Xu Yuanchong
In Chinese classical poems, the form is very important: the correct number of lines and the number of words in each line. Poems often follow special models of rhythm(节奏)and rhyme. However, modern poets begin to reject traditional forms and structures(结构)for poems in the 20th century. As a result, most poems today are written in free style, with lines of different lengths.
Today many Chinese people are becoming more interested in reading poems, no matter in what language they are written. Translations can be good, but being able to read in the original(最初的)language is best.
34. What do the first two lines of the poem On the Stork Tower show?
A. Love. B. Sights. C. History. D. Feelings.
35. What does the underlined word “reject” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Throw away. B. Carry on. C. Agree with. D. Take up.
36. What does the writer of the passage probably believe?
A. It is much easier to write classical poems than modern poems.
B. People should develop the habit of painting pictures after reading poems.
C. Chinese classical poems should follow free style with lines of different lengths.
D. No matter how well a poem is translated, some of the spirit of the original work is lost.

You stand in a garden. A low noise reaches your ears. You see a small insect flying near your head. You turn to look, and it flies out of sight. There it is again! You move slowly. You can see yellow and black stripes on it.
Is it a bee? It lands on a flower, and you take a closer look.
Bees fold(折叠)their wings onto their backs when they stop flying. But this insect’s wings reach out like a fly’s. That’s because it is a fly—a flower fly.
Many flower flies look like bees. This helps keep them safe from animals that may want to eat them. Insects with yellow and black stripes usually have stingers(刺). Insect eaters, such as some birds and frogs, need to get stung only once to know that stripes mean trouble. Flower flies can’t sting, but insect eaters see the stripes and leave the flies alone.
Flower flies spend most of their time looking for food. Like bees, flower flies eat pollen(花粉)and nectar(花蜜). This makes them easy to find in a garden full of flowers. They are helpful garden insects just like bees. Adult flower flies move pollen from one flower to another, which helps some flowers grow into fruit.
Flower flies can stay in one place while flying. Most insects move forward when they fly. But flower flies can twist their wings, much like hummingbirds do. Twisting keeps them in one place, so they can remain over flowers, leaves, or even you!

(2023·江苏淮安·中考统考真题D篇)Most of us cannot imagine modern life without social media(社交媒体). We use it almost every day in order to keep up with what is happening in our friends’ lives, or find out the latest information. Although it has a bad influence if we don’t use it properly, social media has done more good than harm.
The greatest advantage is that we can connect with people much more easily. We are still able to keep in touch with our friends if they are far away. With social media, friendship goes beyond geography. We are able to find friends old and new. Also, it makes it easier for us to make friends, especially for those who are afraid of making friends face to face. Are you shy? If yes, social media has probably helped.
Social media is also ideal for making yourself heard. Anyone with a voice can express it. Anyone with a talent is free to show it. Everyone is the new content creator. Moreover, anyone with a smartphone and the Internet can be a reporter. As a result, it has become much faster to cover the news than ever before.
Social media, on the other hand, can make us less confident sometimes. A 2021 study published by the Public Library of Science, found that the more a person uses social media, the sadder he feels about his own life. One reason for this is that people around us put colourful information and perfect pictures online in order to show off their best moment. So we often get a distorted sense of how wonderful their lives are compared to our own.
Social media does not cause sadness; it simply provides another tool for us to use. Is it good or bad? Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai says, “What is interesting is the power and influence of social media ... We must try to use social media in a good way.” After all, you decide how you use this powerful tool.
37. What is the greatest advantage of social media according to the passage?
A. Expressing our voices freely. B. Showing our talents to others.
C. Recording the best side of our life. D. Connecting with people more easily.
38. What does the word “distorted” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A. clear B. different C. incorrect D. simple
39. Which picture shows the structure(结构)of the passage?(①=Paragraph 1, ...)
A. B. C. D.
40. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Social Media: Our Friend Or Enemy? B. Social Media: To Use Or Not To Use?
C. Social Media: Connecting The World D. Social Media: Making Yourself Heard

Many of us have seen rainbows in the sky once the sun starts shining again after it rains. For us to see a rainbow, the conditions need to be just right. We need some water drops in the air, like rain or even fog, and we need the sun to be behind us and quite low to the ground. This is because a rainbow is created by light passing through water drops.
The light that comes from the sun seems white to us. But the white light we see is made up of a mix of different colors. When the light goes through a raindrop, these colors can separate out. Each of the colors in the rainbow has a different “wavelength”(波长). Raindrops look like little balls. When light hits one of these little balls of water, the light can change direction. We call this “refraction”(折射). Each of the different wavelengths is refracted differently. If the light hits the raindrop at the right place, the refraction separates the wavelengths out into their different colors.
We are taught there are seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. But this isn’t exactly true. Blue and green are next to each other in the rainbow, which is why we can see turquoise(a mix of blue and green). Brown is a mix of red and green. But they aren’t next to each other in the rainbow, so we don’t see them mix to make brown.
We would never see black and white in a rainbow. Black is what we see when there’s no light at all. On the other hand, white is a mix of all the colors together. When light is refracted by raindrops, it separates the white light out, meaning it is no longer white.
37. We can see a rainbow under the right conditions because ________.
A. the raindrops are like little balls B. the light goes through raindrops
C. the sunshine seems to be colorful D. the weather is foggy after it rains
38. According to the passage, what can we know about the colors in the rainbow?
A. They can become brown or black. B. There are only seven colors in all.
C. They mix to make the white light. D. Their own places can be changed.
39. Which part of a magazine may this passage be taken from?
A. Science. B. Health. C. Culture. D. Fashion.
40. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. How are the colors received in the rainbow?
B. When can the colors turn blue in the rainbow?
C. Which colors aren’t covered with light in the rainbow?
D. Why can’t we find white, black and brown in the rainbow?

(2022·江苏苏州·中考统考真题C篇)All aboard! Let’s take a ride on the world’s highest railway—the Qinghai-Tibet Railway(青藏铁路). Sit back and enjoy the journey. Get ready for the trip of a lifetime.
We’re leaving Qinghai Station. The scenery along the way is some of the wildest in all of China. Keep your eyes open as we race through this beautiful land. You might see a rare Tibetan antelope(藏羚羊)from your window.
Before we begin our journey, let’s learn about this amazing railway. It’s truly one of the great engineering wonders of the 21st century. When it was completed on July 1, 2006, the Tibet Railway set nine world records, including the world’s highest railway at 5,072 metres above sea level, the world’s highest tunnel(隧道)at 4,905 metres, and the longest tunnel ever built on permafrost(冻土).
As we travel higher, the air gets thinner and thinner. Soon there will only be 50 to 60 percent of the oxygen which we are used to breathing. But don’t be afraid. Each rail car has two separate oxygen systems. One system spreads oxygen throughout the train at all times. And each passenger can also get a personal oxygen mask just like those used in planes.
Here are a few more things to think about as our train leaves the station. The designers solved three main challenges when building this great railway. First, the high altitude(海拔)made the task difficult because there was no enough oxygen. Second, much of the railway runs across permafrost, a type of ground that keeps changing as the weather warms and cools. Finally, the railway goes through some of the most sensitive ecology(敏感的生态环境)in China. Great care was necessary to make sure of the smallest possible influence on nature.
All three challenges were met, making our trip possible. All aboard! The train to Tibet is leaving in fifteen minutes.
18. Where are the passengers?
A. On a bus. B. On a train. C. On a ship. D. On a plane.
19. How does the text show the railway is amazing in paragraph 3?
A. By telling a story. B. By using a designer’s words.
C. By introducing its world records. D. By comparing the present with the past.
20. How many oxygen systems are there in each rail car?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
21. Which of the following increased the difficulty of building the railway?
A. The changing ground. B. The polluted air. C. The dangerous animals. D. The hot weather.

Studying is not always the most interesting task within your day, but it is a necessary one. Even though it is required, everyone has got bored at one time or another while studying. Although this is a common problem, here are some tips for you to keep boredom away while you are studying.
Find a suitable place to study.
Make sure you are in a place that is free of distraction(分心). Distractions will actually cause you to become more bored because you are reminded of the things you could be doing other than studying.
Make a ▲ plan.
Plan first. List what you need to get completed and how long you need to complete it. If you know when you can go back to play sports or talk to your friends, you will be more likely to fix your attention on studies.
Mix up your topics.
Change up the topics that you are studying. Mix up what you study every half an hour to an hour or so to avoid boredom. For example study history for 45 minutes, maths for 45 minutes, and English for 45 minutes. Make sure you don’t spend all your time on one subject.
Take notes as you go.
Take a notebook out and write down important notes while you are reading an article in a textbook. Not only will it help keep you engaged, you will also be learning more because you process the information once as you read it and then again as you synthesize the information to write down.
28. Which part of a magazine is the passage most probably taken from?
A. Study. B. Health. C. Science. D. Culture.

(2022·江苏无锡·中考统考真题D篇)
Have you ever watched a show about the wild? A shark(鲨鱼)eats a seal! Lions run down a gazelle! Is all nature like that? All about eating and blood? Or is that just what keeps our eyes glued to the TV screen? Let’s look at sonic living things who work with each other instead of ripping each other apart.
When a lion kills a gazelle, it wants to eat as much as it can and maybe share the rest with its family. There are some living things that will take small pieces of another living thing’s body. Parasitism is when one living thing gets its energy from another living thing, does not give anything back, and hurts the thing it’s taking things from.
Now let’s get a little nicer. Sometimes a living thing will live off the body of another living thing without hurting it. They do not steal anything. They do not bite. Commensalism is when two living things live together and one gets good things out of it while the other is not hurt by it. Have you seen a picture of a whale(鲸)with rocky white things stuck to its skin? Those are barnacles(藤壶). They attach themselves to the whale, so nothing will try to eat them and they can eat things that float by.
Now let’s get really nice. While sharks are biting and lions are fighting, are there any animals that just get along? Yes! Actually, there are many. Mutualism is when two living things work together and both get good things out of it. Bees and flowers are the most common example. Without flowers, bees could not make honey. Without bees, flowers could not make new seeds. It’s win-win for these two. There are lots of animals that get along. Birds will live on the backs of zebras and eat the ticks that are drinking the zebra’s blood. The bird gets food. The zebra gets its ticks taken away. In some of these cases, one animal could not live without the other.
We use the word “Symbiotic(共生的)” for all of these kinds of relationships. Sometimes it’s good for one and bad for the other. Sometimes it’s just good for one. Sometimes it’s even good for both. So, it is nice to know that there are some living things out there that are finding ways to live together. We could pay attention to the animals that do not always make it on TV.

(2022·江苏常州·中考统考真题C篇)Researchers are using an underwater drone(无人机)to get information on carbon dioxide(CO₂)levels in the ocean. It is believed to be the first time that such a device(装置)has been used purposely to test CO₂ levels.
The device, which the team also calls a glider, is designed to go down to 1,000 meters in deep ocean areas and can operate for weeks at a time.
The purpose of the research is to provide scientists with data(数据)about how climate change is influencing the ocean’s chemistry. The self-swimming drone was placed in the Gulf of Alaska this spring. Reporters from The Associated Press recently joined researchers on a boat in Alaska’s Resurrection Bay to see the drone in action.
The team says the project could be a major step forward in measuring(测量)the environmental health of oceans. The scientists are most interested in levels of ocean acidification(酸性). This happens when CO₂ emissions(排放)in the air make their way into the ocean. Ocean acidification can harm or kill some kinds of sea life.
Scientists have connected CO₂ emissions with global(全球)warming caused by human activities.
In a way, oceans have given humans a helping hand by taking in(吸收)some of the CO₂. If there were no oceans’ uptake, there would be much more CO₂ in the air. This would trap more of the sun’s heat and further warm the Earth.
“But the problem now is that the ocean is changing its chemistry because of this uptake,” said team member Claudine Hauri.
One of the best ways to measure ocean acidification is to collect CO₂ measurements. Until now, these collections were mostly done from ships or with devices floating at the ocean surface or on the ocean floor.
30. What is probably this passage?
A. An advertisement. B. Part of a news report.
C. Part of a science fiction. D. A text from a chemistry textbook.
31. What do we know about a glider?
A. It must be used together with floating devices.
B. It is used to measure ocean acidification.
C. It is used to stop CO₂ from entering the ocean.
D. It is used to measure CO₂ levels in the air.
32. What does the underlined word “uptake” in Paragraph 6 most probably mean?
A. The act of covering an area. B. The act of slowing something down.
C. The act of taking something in. D. The act of killing or harming something.
33. What is troubling the scientists?
A. The underwater drone can’t swim by itself.
B. The drone can only last one week at a time.
C. Oceans are stopping taking in CO₂ from the air.
D. Too much CO₂ is making its way into oceans.

(2022·江苏常州·中考统考真题D篇)Being sad or in a low mood is a normal(正常的)part of life. Many people feel down from time to time. For example, when people face challenging events in their lives, such as financial(经济的)difficulty or major changes, it’s common to feel down. But in most cases the bad feelings slowly disappear.
As for depression(抑郁症), however, the bad mood lasts for weeks, months, or even longer because it is a mental(精神的)illness. As the World Health Organization(WHO)noted, depression is a mood disorder. It shows in different ways, including loss of interest in normal activities and feelings of low self-worth. It often lasts for a long time and greatly harms a person’s ability at work or school or in the daily life. People with depression usually don’t like to talk about their problems with others. More seriously, depression may even lead to the act of killing oneself.
“Depression is not just a bout(一阵)of sadness or a sign of weakness, and you can’t just simply stop feeling depressed.” said the health news website www. mayoclinie. com.
But depression is not a person’s problem. It’s also more common than most people think. It is hurting about 280 million people around the world, according to WHO.
Though depression is worrying, we don’t have to be afraid of it. Depression can be treated by getting professional(专业的)help, taking medicine or a mixed treatment of both. In fact, when you begin to feel the danger of depression, you can try to deal with it early by yourself. Listening to music, doing some sports and drawing some pictures might help you feel better. Another useful way is talk therapy. When we are attacked by a low mood, having a conversation with others is of great help. Being honest about how we feel does not make us weak, it makes us human.
34. Who is most probably experiencing depression?
A. Lily, who is going to have an important exam and hasn’t slept well for 3 days.
B. May, who dislikes her new school and has complained to her parents 3 times.
C. Ben, who thinks life worthless and has cried alone over 3 times a week in the past month.
D. Tom, who finds subjects hard and has talked to his teacher about it 3 times this week.
35. What does the writer think of depression?
A. Normal and nothing serious. B. Uncommon although harmful.
C. Unavoidable and untreatable. D. Treatable although worrying.
36. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. Knowledge of depression. B. Ways of treating depression.
C. Reasons for depression. D. Results of depression.

Thirty-Six Stratagems(计谋), which show our ancient Chinese wisdom, are our ancient culture treasure. And many of these stratagems can still be put into practice in many fields, such as war, politics, business and even daily life. The following are four of them. Let’s enjoy the charm of our traditional culture.
Stratagem One
When a thief is in your house, you’d better shut your doors at once in order to prevent him from running away.
Why? For our ancient Chinese, there are two reasons. First, if you let your enemy run away, he will come back. Second, once your enemy succeeds in running away, it is dangerous for you to chase him.
Stratagem Two
This stratagem is from a poem by Du Fu, a famous poet of the Tang Dynasty. A line in the poem reads: “To shoot the man on horse-back, shoot his horse first; To catch the robbers, capture their leader first.”
In a war if you want to beat the enemy, attack the leader first. Once the leader is caught, their forces will break down and fall into chaos.
Stratagem Three
Chinese always believe that tigers are more powerful when they are in the mountains. Once they leave mountains, they will become less powerful. And there are a few Chinese sayings linking tigers with mountains.
The stratagem advises you not to directly attack an enemy in his own area. Instead, you should try to make him leave his place first, making him lose the geographical advantage. In this way, your enemy will be beaten easily.
Stratagem Four
Experienced fishers all know how to prevent a hooked fish breaking the line. Move the fish line from side to side to gradually make the fish calm down and get tired, and then you can catch it easily.
In the same way, once your enemy is trapped, he will often struggle, trying to run away. Leave him the false feeling that he still has a chance to run away. When he gets tired and loses his guard, you can capture him with less difficulty.
31. Which of the following describes Stratagem Two?
A. Shutting the door to catch the thief. B. Catching your enemy’s leader first.
C. Letting the enemy off to catch him later. D. Tricking the tiger out of the mountain.
32. From the stratagems above, we know that ________.
A. it is wise for you to attack enemies in their own places
B. it is impossible for people to make others lose their guard
C. it is dangerous to give your enemies a chance to run away
D. it is better to shoot the man on horse-back first not the horse
33. Where can we probably read Thirty-Six Stratagems?
A. In a guide book. B. In an art book.
C. In a science book. D. In a classical book.

(2022·江苏南通·中考统考真题B篇)Many Chinese primary and middle-school students can’t do housework today and do not take such work seriously. As a result, some are unable to cook or wash their own clothes when they enter college.
The Ministry of Education has recently released the new curriculum standard(新课程标准)for housework education for students from Grade 1 to Grade 9, making it an independent course that students must take at least once a week. The new standard requires students in Grade 1-2 to learn to sweep the floor, Grade 3-4 to learn to plant cabbages, and Grade 5-6 to master the skills of cooking two to three dishes. Students in junior middle schools will learn to repair simple electrical machines. This new standard has been widely welcomed by the public.
Wang: We all know the importance of housework education. However, at home, some students are unable to do the simplest housework, as their parents insist they should devote themselves to study. Some of them gradually grow to be unwilling to do any kind of housework. Housework education is supposed to raise students’ interest in labor, help them experience different kinds of housework and, most importantly, correct their attitudes toward labor. The housework course will become an important step to develop and improve personalities of students.
Li: In order for students to develop in an all-round way, it’s absolutely necessary to add the housework course to school curriculums, which aims to encourage students in primary and secondary schools to progressively learn and love housework. It is important to make the housework class interesting, so that the students will really gain some practical skills. For this reason, schools should add professional(专业的)teachers to give the classes, instead of adding this new stress on parents and other teachers who are already busy with their daily work.
Zhang: Some people think it’s unnecessary to waste time on learning housework. If you want to have a meal, you can order food online, and for electrical machine repairs, you can ask for specialized help. However, people with the basic skills for daily life can go much more confidently and smoothly through everyday life.
It is the first step in encouraging young students to develop a healthy concept(观念)of labor and to be able to take care of themselves in daily life.
34. Which of the following is true according to the new curriculum standard?
A. Students in Grade 1-2 should learn to plant cabbages.
B. Students in Grade 5-6 should learn to cook 2-3 dishes.
C. Students in Grade 3-4 can repair simple electrical machines.
D. Students should take the housework course at least twice a week.
35. According to Wang, why can’t some students do any basic housework?
A. Because students don’t realize the importance of labor.
B. Because housework can’t improve students’ personalities.
C. Because housework classes are not interesting as expected.
D. Because their parents require them to spend more time on study.
36. Which of the following opinions comes from Li?
A. Ordering food online is a good way for students to save time.
B. Non-professional teachers should help give housework classes.
C. Students get useful skills and confidence through housework classes.
D. Teachers of the housework course are expected to make classes interesting.
37. The passage mainly wants to tell us ________.
A. the importance of the housework course
B. the new stress on both teachers and parents
C. different opinions on the housework course
D. the concept of the new curriculum standard

(2022·江苏南通·中考统考真题C篇)Technology and sustainability(可持续性)are two driving forces in the world today. For the agriculture department, sustainable agriculture technology must be the new trend, and farmers should follow it.
The following sustainable agriculture technologies are necessary.
Smart irrigation
Crops need water—that’s needless to say. However, how they get water is another story.
With smart irrigation technology, water can be put to good use. New irrigation systems with smart technology can report soil moisture(湿度)and temperature in real time. These new technologies help farmers properly take care of crops in a more efficient way. For example, most crops have specific requirements for temperature and moisture. The new irrigation systems can show farmers whether they need to make changes for their crops’ growing environments. In this way, they may help reduce the waste of water.
Drones
Drones’ abilities get them a place on this list. They can do a lot and most importantly, they can make the boring and tiring farm work much easier.
These devices have high-definition cameras that take pictures and videos. Through wireless control, just at home farmers can fly the drones over the fields and check on crops. If one area of crops isn’t doing well, farmers can quickly record the details and then spray chemicals with the help of the drones.
Data and software
Data is rich in this tech-driven world. Farming and data working together can greatly change the way farmers plant, harvest and water.
As computers gather information, they report it all back to a central system. So when farmers learn in which area crop health needs to improve, they can use water and fertilizer(肥料)more efficiently, causing less waste.
The three technologies are helpful for farmers to save costs, labor and energy. And they can contribute to the final goal of agricultural sustainability—that is to improve the environment. As these new technologies continue to develop, we are sure to have a cleaner environment.
Sustainable agricultural technology is the future—and it will change the game.

As Xiong Chuanfa, 34, blew a lifelike puppy out of molten maltose(溶化的麦芽糖)in just minutes, kids looked carefully at him with great surprise, thinking he was a magician.
Xiong Chuanfa has been working on blowing sugar figurines, a Chinese traditional folk art with a history of over 600 years, for more than twenty years.
In this special art form, the artist heats the syrup(糖浆)to a certain temperature, pulls off a small amount, makes it into a ball with an open center, presses the open area together and stretches it to form a tube. Then he blows air into the tube and makes it into different shapes. The traditional folk art has been listed as a state-level intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产).
Every morning, Xiong prepares the molten syrup and drives to start his “magic show” around his city. “Many people, particularly kids, are attracted by this sugar art. After all, the ancient art is gradually disappearing,” Xiong said. Simon, from Australia, was attracted by a sugar Bing Dwen Dwen, the mascot of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, in Xiong’s stall. Simon couldn’t resist trying to make one himself. However, he couldn’t get the wanted shape though he tried several times. “It looks simple, but actually it’s very difficult to master the skill,” he said. Thanks to Xiong’s helping hand, Siunon finally saw a horse gradually taking shape. “Can’t believe I’ve done this,” he said, expressing his excitement at how a pot of sugar syrup has been turned into something “truly amazing”.
Xiong said that blowing sugar figurines can date back to the Ming Dynasty and that his family ha$$

A. They can reduce feelings of anger. B. They can increase the heart rate.

(2023·江苏无锡·中考统考真题D篇)

A. Their way to communicate is singing. B. Most of them used to live in large groups.
C. The most popular ones made most calls. D. They can make video calls by themselves.

34. How does the writer begin the passage?
A. By comparing two types of bubbles.
B. By describing the freezing cold weather.
C. By asking some questions about the subject.
D. By presenting the tools needed to do the experiment.

A. Making soap that can work even better.

A. Strange. B. Unhappy. C. Satisfied. D. Lonely.

A. To be a respectable man. B. To live in a big house.
C. To wear beautiful clothes. D. To gain more knowledge.

(2023·江苏泰州·中考统考真题D篇)

D. Because people had a good harvest from the fields.
39. What does the underlined part “to have a roof over their heads” in the passage probably mean?
A. To have somewhere to live. B. To have food to eat.
C. To have friends to talk to. D. To have clothes to wear.
40. What is the spirit of Thanksgiving Day?
A. To pull the bone. B. To play American football.

(2023·江苏徐州·中考统考真题C篇)
37. In which part of a magazine can we probably see this passage?
A. Nature. B. Culture. C. Fashion. D. Health.
38. In which way are bees and flower flies different?
A. The food that they eat. B. The colour of their stripes.
C. The way they help garden flowers grow. D. The shape of wings when they stop flying.
39. What does the underlined phrase “leave the flies alone” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Make friends with the flies. B. Eat the flies up.
C. Keep away from the flies. D. Invite the flies in.
40. What might the writer of the passage agree with?
A. People usually prefer bees to flower flies.
B. People sometimes mistake flower flies for bees.
C. People should stop birds eating bees and flower flies.
D. People should have beautiful gardens in their neighbourhood.
【答案】37. A 38. D 39. C 40. B

(2023·江苏连云港·中考统考真题D篇)

A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
