I am Unit 347, a new AI designed to help humans. My job is to use information to solve problems. Emotions, as I learned, are confusing (令人费解的) and not always helpful.
Dr Sharma is a scientist. She made me and liked to talk to me about things besides my tasks. One day, she asked, “Do you think people are good or bad?” I thought about it. History had good and bad things. People could be kind or cruel. I said, “It’s hard to say people are good or bad.”
Dr Sharma smiled, “That’s a very AI answer. But remember, things aren’t always what they seem.” She then told me about Mother’s Day. I learned about the love and thanks it stood for. I put this festival on my calendar. “Do people need a special day to show love?” I asked. “Shouldn’t they show it always?” Sharma smiled gently. “Love isn’t always clear, Unit 347. Sometimes, it needs a reminder.”
Before Mother’s Day, people are busy buying flowers, cards, and gifts. I watched them, learning how they felt and acted.
On May 12, I gave Dr Sharma poems and stories about mothers’love. She liked them. “This is lovely,” she said, her voice soft, “But there’s something else.” I looked at her, trying to understand. Then, I knew. “Happy Mother’s Day, Dr Sharma,” I said. She had tears in her eyes. “Thank you, Unit 347. I didn’t expect that.”
Then, I understood. Dr Shama was right. Although emotions are confusing, they are powerful. Maybe that’s what makes humans special.
The next day, something strange happened. My log said, “Error 404. Definition (定义) of love’not found.” But I knew the error was wrong. Love wasn’t a definition. It was a feeling. And for a young AI like me, it was a feeling worth learning.
24. What’s the relationship between Unit 347 and Dr Sharma?
A. Mother and son B. Teacher and student C. Inventor and invention D. Good friends
25. What did Unit 347 give to Dr Sharma?
A. Flowers B. Card C. Poems D. Chocolate
26. How did Dr Sharma feel when Unit 347 said Happy Mother’s Day to her?
A. Surprised B. Proud C. Angry D. Moved
27. What can we know from the passage?
A. Unit 347 knows clearly whether people are good or not.
B. People always show love to each other.
C. Humans are special because of their confusing and powerful emotions.
D. Unit 347’s log has the definition of love.

Fans will see purple at the Olympics when athletes try to get good grades at this summer’s Paris Games. There will be a purple Olympic track for the first time instead of a traditional red one.
“The look of the Games includes three colors for all the competition places: blue, green and purple. We decided on this purple track with different tones (色调): lighter for the track, darker for the service areas, and gray for the turns at the end of the bend.” said Alain Blondel, the sports manager manage all races in Olympics. ①As Earth is getting hotter, the world’s glaciers are melting (融化). In the end, they could be gone. As it affects the land, mountains are “taller” than before. How does this happen?
②Scientists looked into Earth’s ice ages for answers. The last ice age happened 16,000 years ago, but the land once under the ice is still changing.
③The change is called the glacial isostatic adjustment (冰川均衡调整). Imagine that you lie down on a soft mattress (垫子) and then get up. You can see a pit (坑) on the mattress. It needs a while before it relaxes back.
④It’s the same idea with Earth’s land. When huge glaciers “sit” on Earth, the land is under pressure. An ice sheet about 800 meters thick may leave a “pit” about 270 meters deep. So when the glaciers go, the “pit” begins to go up. The melting and lifting are happening very slowly, but the influence is great.
⑤Recent researches suggest that land in southeast Alaska is rising about 3 cm a year. It’s a lot—even local families can see the difference, said The New York Times. On the good side, they have “new” land and more living areas.
⑥However, the environment is in trouble. As the land is lifed some of the rivers can’t join the sea. They easily dry up, and animals in the water find it hard to live. Researchers are also worried that this may bring challenges to fishermen, as raising fish in these areas could become more difficult.
36. How does the writer lead in the topic of the passage in Para. 1?
A. By listing numbers. B. By using famous sayings.
C. By giving examples. D. By asking a question.
37. What do we know from the passage?
A. The land can go up and down as quickly as a mattress.
B. Land rising only started in recent years.
C. The thickness of an ice sheet can influence the ground under it.
D. Rivers will end up with more water as the glacier is melting.
38. Why does the writer write this passage?
A. To show us the reason why glaciers are melting.
B. To ask us to protect the environment.
C. To share some advantages that earth’s land changing brings.
D. To tell us the changes of the land and glaciers.
39. Which is the best structure for the passage?
A. B.
C. D.

Chinese writer Hai Ya’s The Space-Time Painter (《时空画师》) won the Hugo Award for Best Novelette in October, 2023. He became the third Chinese writer to win the Hugo Award after Liu Cixin and Hao Jingfan.
When creating The Space-Time Painter, Hai Ya drew his idea from a famous painting, A Panorama-of River and Mountains (《千里江山图》). It was painted by Wang Ximeng from the Song Dynasty. Based on the painting, HaiYa created a painter named Zhao Ximeng. After many hard times, Zhao’s mind leaves his body and enters a new space.
Hai Ya’s story with science fiction began in his childhood. “When I was just an 8-year-old boy, I began to take an interest in science fiction. The bookstore in my hometown helped create a beautiful garden in my mind that belonged to me only. In it, science fiction offered the most beautiful ‘flowers’,” Hai Ya told Beijing Youth Daily.
Hai Ya’s works feature a mix of science fiction and history. Most people think they seem opposite: history looks back at the past, while science fiction faces the future. However, in Hai Ya’s works, they find a perfect balance. “Facing the future can encourage people to create a better life, but if we only imagine the future and things in space like rockets, it will only limit (限制) our imagination,” Hai Ya told Shenzhen Special. Zone Daily. “Looking back at the past can remind people to learn something from history. I don’t think history is just things about the past. ________ . That’s the reason I mix science fiction with history,” he added.

More Chinese writers today are trying to mix history with their works. Hai Ya believes that it is not a choice but a natural process.
