Teaching Aids Power Point, blackboard, pictures and audios. . Teaching Methods 1.Task-based language teaching 2.Communicative language teaching .Teaching Objectives At the end of the class, students should be able to: 1.understand the new words and expressions such as present, special, cut, secret, never and so on. 2.grasp the general idea of the conversation and learn more about birthday party and activities. 3.use the third-person singular properly. 4.acquire the listening and reading ability about grabbing the key information from the conversations. 5.share their experiences about birthday parties using adverbs of frequency in English fluently. . Key and Difficult Points 1.Key point: Help students to get the details of the conversation quickly. 2.Difficult Point: Communicate with each other about birthday party in English. . Teaching Procedures Major Steps Activities Justifications Lead-in (5 minutes) Guess game At the beginning of the class, the teacher will greet students and then show a photo about birthday party which is partly not visible. And teacher will invite some students to guess what they are doing. Teacher gives corresponding comments to students’ answers and meantime explain some new words in the picture. Then teacher will naturally show the topic for this lesson: I always like birthday parties. Before the lesson, through a simple guess game, teacher can attract students’ attention quickly and lead into the lesson topic, birthday party. Listening (8 minutes) 1.Listen to conversation 1 (short) . (1)For the first time, teacher will show students four words. During listening, students should order the words according to their order appearing in the conversation. (2)Students will listen it again and try to answer the question: What does Betty want to give Daming? Through the two activities, students will have a better understanding of both the general ideas and details about the short conversation. Students will also be well prepared to listen a longer one and try to get general ideas and details about it in the same way. 2.Listen to the conversation 2 and do the following tasks. (1)For the first time, students will try to grab the general idea and choose the best answer for the question: What are they talking about? A. birthday songs B. birthday food C. birthday party D. presents (2)Listen again and students will read after it loudly. Before listening, teacher will guide students to know about some new words. Through listening and reading loudly, students will have a general understanding about the long conversation. Reading and speaking (28 minutes) 1.Read for gist.(2 minutes) Students will read the conversation and answer the following questions: 1)How many people are there in the conversation? Who are they? 2)Whose birthday is coming? Through reading for three times and doing some tasks, students will know more about birthday party and grab more details about the conversation. In addition, through the exercises, students will use the third-person singular and adverbs of frequency to share their opinions in English well. Moreover, students can have a better understanding of the similarities and differences after comparing the birthday parties in China with those in western countries. 2.Read and check the true sentences: (8 minutes) Students will read the conversation for the second time and check the true sentences. At meantime, they will explain why it is true or false through finding the corresponding sentences in the conversation. Teacher will invite several students to analyse the sentences one by one. Then teacher will circle the words like never, always and so on and ask students what they are. Next, teacher will make a brief introduction to the common adverbs of frequency and let students know what the frequencies that different adverbs of frequency indicate are through teacher’s writing on the blackboard and the picture on the slide.(pictured below)Never 0% 3.Read and complete the table.(6 minutes) Students will read the conversation for third time and try to fill in the blanks. And then they will express everyone’s activities at the birthday party in complete sentences with the help of the table(pictured below). Teacher will correct some sentences which did not use the third-person singular properly. 4.Group work(6 minutes) Students will be divided into 4-people groups and every one acts as one character in the conversation. Teacher will guide students to role play the conversation and remind them to pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation. After 5 minutes’ preparation, teacher will find a group to show their conversation in front of the class. Teacher will give comments to their presentation. 5.Think after reading(6 minutes) Teacher will ask a question: Are the birthday parties in China the same as ones in western countries? Let students think from three aspects: (1)sing Happy Birthday (2)eat noodles (3)make a cake Then the teacher will offer two sentences students can use to answer the questions: (1)If same, students can say “People always/usually/often/sometimes/never ... both in China and in western countries”; (2)If different, students can use the sentences “In China, we always/usually/ often/ sometimes/ never ... but in western countries, they always/usually/ often/sometimes/ never ... ” Summary (3 minutes) Teacher will ask students to act as assistant teacher to conclude what they have learned this lesson. Then make a summary together. After the study of this lesson, students will know about conversations among Daming and his friends about birthday party. In addition, teacher also guides students to use the adverbs of frequency and third-person singular properly. Reviewing the important knowledge in this lesson can deepen students’ impression and form good study habits. Homework (1 minutes) Do some surveys on their friends and do a table about after-class activities with always /usually /sometimes /never ... . Example is as follows: TINA This homework can consolidate the usage of third-person singular and adverbs of frequency. Moreover, doing surveys on their friends can help students exercise the oral English as well as enhance their abilities of cooperating with others. .
