Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, the rest of the furry — loveable characters of a famous film The Muppets — don’t they just bring a smile to your face every time you see them? Would you believe they were the creation of a special creative mind? Whose was it? Jim Henson’s, of course!
Jim Henson was born in Greenville, Mississippi, in 1936. As an adult, he loved to work with puppets (木偶). Before he turned 20 years old. he had achieved success with a popular late-night puppet show called Sam and Friends.
Henson became known for his humor, and his puppets often appeared in television ads. Henson also developed the technique of using cameras to focus on the puppets while keeping the puppeteers out of the frame (相框). This allowed puppeteers more freedom, since they didn’t have to be stuck behind a screen. It also made the puppets seen much more lifelike.
Henson’s big break came in 1969, when his puppets became an important part of popular educational show Sesame Street. Since that time, Henson’s beloved characters have become closely related to public television.
In 1976, Henson developed his own comedy show-The Muppet Show, based upon his puppets. It struggled at first, but eventually became a success that was one of the most widely watched television shows in history.
Always preparing for a challenge Henson branched out (拓展) into major movies, proving that his puppets could be as popular on the big screen as they were on television. Over the years. Henson’s characters had charmed countless people with their unique humor.
In 1990, the whole world was sad to hear that Jim Henson passed away suddenly. Today, his work lives on through the various companies and organizations he set up. He has inspired millions of people with his creativity. His words have also inspired many to follow their dreams.

On Nov.13, 2023, the Kenyan government announced a surprise public holiday for a nationwide tree planting day, part of its plan to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.
“This Monday on Nov.13, the public across the country were expected to plant trees as a contribution to the national efforts to save our country from the terrible effects of climate change,” said Kindiki, the Home Minister of Kenya.
Kenya’s present forest coverage stands at about 7%. Deforestation speeds up climate change, which is worsening droughts in the Horn of Africa, including Kenya, where rains have failed for five seasons in a row. So the government has set aside more than $ 80 million this year, managing to augment tree coverage to more than 10%.
“It is a moment for Kenyans to stand together in the defense of our environment,” said Soipan Tuya, the Environment Minister. He referred to the day as “a ‘hummingbird(s)’ contribution day”. Hummingbirds are small birds, but they play an important part in the environment by pollinating(授粉)flowers.
He added, “Having been planting trees for most of my life, I thought I was doing rather well, but the government’s plan to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 was ‘an unprecedented(史无前例的)show of promise by the government towards our climate action duties.’”
8. What is the purpose of the public holiday?
A. To increase economic income. B. To encourage people to plant trees.
C. To allow people to get more rest. D. To remind people to get close to nature.
9. Which word is the closest in meaning to “augment” in paragraph 3?
A. Increase. B. Figure. C. Record. D. Stop.
10. What does Soipan Tuya want to say by referring to the day as “a ‘hummingbird’ contribution day”?
A. We should get on well with birds. B. No contribution is too small to leave an impact.
C Each animal is important to nature. D. It is time to protect hummingbirds.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Kenya Is Taking Action to Protect Wildlife
B Kenya Is in Face of Environmental Problems
C. Kenya Improves Relationships with Their Neighbors
D. Kenya Surprises the Public with a Holiday to Plant Trees
D
Does bad grammar drive you crazy? It may not just be a matter of opinion — scientists at the University of Birmingham in the UK have shown that hearing bad grammar can make us feel stressed, because it causes the body’s autonomic nervous system, which controls our body’s unconscious (无意识的) processes such as breathing and heart rate.
The study tested how our heart rate answers when we hear grammatical mistakes in a speech. It found a direct connection between poor grammar and reduced heart rate variability, which is the measure of the variation in time between our heartbeats, and a known sign of stress.
For the research, 41 healthy British English-speaking adults listened to 40 speech records by four different speakers with British and Polish accents (口音), while their heart rate was monitored by a machine attached to their fingers. Some of the speeches had grammatical mistakes, using the words “a”, “an” and “the” incorrectly. The length of the speeches changed, and the number of grammatical mistakes in them changed, too.
The results showed that on average, the listeners’ heart rate variability dropped when they heard grammatical mistakes in the speech. They also showed that the more mistakes that listeners heard, the further their heart rate variability dropped. In addition to this, the listeners found it more stressful to hear grammatical mistakes made by native English speakers compared to speakers with a Polish accent, because heart rate variability was more reduced when hearing grammatical mistakes made by those with a British accent.
The study’s lead author, Dagmar Divjak, said the results could have a practical application: They might be used to help test the mental abilities of people who cannot speak due to poor health or old age.
12. What does the research focus on?
A. The rules of learning grammar. B. The ways to avoid making mistakes.
C. The importance of having a good mood. D. The impact of grammatical mistakes on our feeling.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the research?
A. Its effect. B. Its result. C. Its process. D. Its purpose.
14. Which sentence may make listeners feel stressed according to the text?
A. How happy we are! B. I has nothing to do at home.
C. That book was a little boring. D. My class saw a film yesterday.
15. What does Dagmar Divjak think of the results?
A. Useful. B. Meaningless. C. Confusing. D. Doubtful.

On rainy days, Juanita liked to climb the attic (阁楼) stairs and play with her stuffed animals (毛绒玩具) under the roof. Here she could hear the drumming sound of the rain. The attic was dark on stormy days, but Juanita thought it was comfortable to have only one light bulb (灯泡) on.
Today, Juanita was pretending that her stuffed animals were Olympic athletes. The event was the high jump, so Juanita threw them into the air to see how high they could fly. Tom, her stuffed monkey, flew so high that he hit the ceiling and went over into a dark corner.
When Juanita went to find Tom, she saw a box on the floor in the corner. It was dusty (布满灰尘的), with gold corners and a metal lock that held it shut. Its key was lying just beside it. She had never noticed this box before. What could be inside?
Juanita brought the box and the key over to the middle of the attic, under the light bulb where she could see better. She opened it carefully and looked inside. Inside the box were a lot of black and white photos. Most of them were of a small girl with her hair braided (编辫子).
The girl looked just like Juanita! This was confusing. “I’ve never been to that house,” she thought as she looked through the photos. There was a gray farmhouse in the background of each picture. How could Juanita be in pictures of a place she had never been to?

Always preparing for a challenge, Henson branched out (拓展) into major movies, proving that his puppets could be as popular on the big screen as they were on television.

C. Each animal is important to nature. D. It is time to protect hummingbirds.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Kenya Is Taking Action to Protect Wildlife
B. Kenya Is in Face of Environmental Problems
C. Kenya Improves Relationships with Their Neighbors
D. Kenya Surprises the Public with a Holiday to Plant Trees

C. Confusing. D. Doubtful.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. A

【导语】本文为一篇说明文,文章通过实验来探索语法错误对我们情感的影响。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“It may not just be a matter of opinion—scientists at the University of Birmingham in the UK have shown that hearing bad grammar can make us feel stressed, because it causes the body’s autonomic nervous system, which controls our body’s unconscious (无意识的) processes such as breathing and heart rate. (这可能不仅仅是意见问题——英国伯明翰大学的科学家们已经表明,听到错误的语法会让我们感到压力,因为它会导致身体的自主神经系统,控制我们身体的无意识过程,如呼吸和心率)”可知,文中研究的重点是语法错误对我们情感的影响。故选D。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“For the research, 41 healthy British English-speaking adults listened to 40 speech records by four different speakers with British and Polish accents (口音), while their heart rate was monitored by a machine attached to their fingers. Some of the speeches had grammatical mistakes, using the words “a”, “an” and “the” incorrectly. The length of the speeches changed, and the number of grammatical mistakes in them changed, too.(在这项研究中,41名说英语的健康成年人听了4位操英国口音和波兰口音的不同人士的40份讲话记录,同时他们的心率由绑在手指上的机器监测。一些演讲有语法错误,错误地使用了“a”、“an”和“the”。演讲的长度变了,语法错误的数量也变了)”可知,该段讲述了研究的过程。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“In addition to this, the listeners found it more stressful to hear grammatical mistakes made by native English speakers compared to speakers with a Polish accent, because heart rate variability was more reduced when hearing grammatical mistakes made by those with a British accent.(除此之外,与波兰口音的人相比,听众发现听到以英语为母语的人犯语法错误更有压力,因为听到英国口音的人犯语法错误时,心率变异性更小)”可知,听者听到英语母语者犯语法错误时压力更大,B选项中主语为I,第一人称,has为第三人称单数动词,为语法错误。故推测听到该句子,听者会感到更大的压力。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The study’s lead author, Dagmar Divjak, said the results could have a practical application: They might be used to help test the mental abilities of people who cannot speak due to poor health or old age.(该研究的主要作者达格玛·迪夫亚克说,研究结果可能具有实际应用价值:它们可能用于帮助测试那些因健康状况不佳或年龄较大而不能说话的人的心理能力)”可知,Dagmar Divjak认为研究结果有实用价值,因此,是有用的。故选A。

Be a Better Gardener
There are always lots of things to learn as a gardener and many of them can only be learned through getting your hands dirty. But there are some things gardeners can learn from reading or watching. ___16___.
What plant families are
Actually, plants have formal scientific Latin names. These names help to categorize (分类) plants, and make it clearer to identify and study those plants. Specific plants are specific varieties of particular species. Species are members of a certain genus (属). And each genus belongs to a broader plant family.
___17___. For example, plants in the Lamiaceae family (mint family) include garden herbs such as lavender, mint and rosemary. In the family, members will generally have aromatic (芳香的) leaves, among other shared characteristics.
___18___
Learning plant families can be a great step forward for those who want to identify more plants around them. Even when we cannot identify plants down to species and variety, knowing which family they belong to can often give us a lot of the information we need. This will often help us to understand the broad characteristics of the plant we are looking at, and where it might be placed in our gardens, or which neighbors it will like.
How to learn plant families
___19___. But I find that a good way to begin is by researching the plants we already have in our garden. Find out which family the different plants belong to, and then take a good and long look at those plants to see their characteristics. ___20___.

故填was。
故填to use。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“I’ve never been to that house” she thought as she looked through the photos. There was a gray farmhouse in the background of each picture. How could Juanita be in pictures of a place she had never been to?
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

Juanita asked her mom to take some photos for her and hang them up with Grandma’s.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Juanita ran downstairs with the photos to show her mom. “Why don’t these photos have any color? When did you braid my hair? And when did we visit a farm?” She breathlessly peppered her mom with questions, as she handed her mom the stack of mysterious photos. Looking at these photos, Mom laughed, “These are photos of your grandma’s when she was a little girl. This was the farm where she lived.” “Wow!” said Juanita excitedly. “I do really look just like her!”
Juanita asked her mom to take some photos for her and hang them up with Grandma’s. Mom nodded and followed Juanita to her favorite attic stairs. Under the dim light bulb, Mom recorded the happy time Juanita spent with her stuffed animals with the camera. After Mom got Juanita’s photos, she said, “Thanks for reminding me of your grandma’s photos. It was a shame to keep them up in the attic. Now, I will put both of your photos in frames and hang them in your room.” Jumping up with joy, Juanita said, “Everything made sense with those photos hung up.”
