Do you like doing chores? What do you think of doing chores? A new study shows that it can make you smarter.
The study was done by a team at a university in Australia. More than 200 parents and kids aged between 5 and 13 joined in it. Parents were asked about how many chores their kids did each day and if the kids actually finished each job.
Tepper led the study. It showed that doing chores like cooking or cleaning was especially helpful to young people. “Kids who often cook meals or do the cleaning are able to do other things well, like problem solving,” said Tepper. It also showed that self-care chores and family-care chores could greatly improve kids’ ability (能力) to think before acting. According to the study, 70% of girls made their own beds compared to 50% of boys. However, 66% of boys took out the rubbish and only 43% of girls did.
Tepper and her team were happy with what they had learned. “We were really excited,” she said. At the same time, Tepper pointed out that chores sometimes seemed boring to kids, so parents should pick those that their kids enjoyed.

Mom and dad are two of the most important people in your life. You probably see at least one of them every day. And they probably influence you more than anyone else you will meet in your lifetime. So if your mom loves to read, you just might grow up carrying a book wherever you go, just like she does.
But parents do a lot more than just passing on their hobbies. Moms and dads care for their kids from the minute they came into the world. They are the people we should love best. It’s very important to stay close, get on, and build a strong relationship with your parents. But not every child knows how to do this. Here are some ways to help you.
Spend time together. Instead of playing a computer game or watching TV ask your mom and dad to play with you. Go outside together, try a board game (棋类游戏), or read a book aloud.
Be kind. Little things might mean a lot to your mom or dad. You can brighten (点亮) a parent’s day with a hug (拥抱), a card, or a joke. It’s also lovely when a kid cleans up his or her room without being asked. And if you try not to fight with your brothers or sisters, your parents might be very happy!
Do your best at whatever you do. You don’t have to be perfect, but when you try your best, you will make your parents proud (骄傲的). It makes them happy to see how you’re turning into a great kid. Why? Because they know you’re on the way of doing a good job.

“Not all chores are boring!” Tepper added. “Find activities that your kids like. They will enjoy doing chores and can learn about healthy eating or the environment.”

Mom and dad are two of the most important people in your life. You probably see at least one of them every day. And, they probably influence you more than anyone else you will meet in your lifetime.
Instead of playing a computer game or watching TV, ask your mom and dad to play with you.
