There’s comfort in the bottom of a swimming pool.
In the open air, the noises all demanded your attention: the lifeguard’s whistle, the slapping of feet across the ground, the voices asking for different things. It reminded me of the school cafeteria, packed with kids: too loud to read a book in. But beneath the surface, things were quiet. The sounds that used to annoy me lost all their power. Instead, they mixed with the splashing of the water and the gentle blub-blub of air bubbles escaping my nose. All the noises worked together to create a symphony. Harmony.
Perhaps the best thing about the bottom of a swimming pool, though, was that at the bottom of a swimming pool, I was alone. I didn’t have to worry about anyone splashing or kicking or making fun of me. They were all far, far away up on the surface. It was only me. Just me.
I used to wish I could live underwater. Mermaids(美人鱼) didn’t have to go to school. Mermaids didn’t call other mermaids nerds (怪胎).
But once, when I came up for air, I spotted a girl my age at the other side of the pool. We locked eyes before I went back under, just for a second. I didn’t think anything of it — girls like her usually didn’t want to be seen around me — until I felt a soft tug on my ankle, and I spied her next to me. She actually wanted to talk to me. She wanted to be friends.
So we talked. And I found out that she liked Pokémon and Warrior Cats just like I did. And we competed to see who could make the biggest splash, and when it got dark and the lights came on, we explored the depths of the pool together.
I didn’t spend so much time at the bottom of a swimming pool after that. How could I when there was so much waiting for me on the surface?
4. What does the author think of the school cafeteria?
A. Crowded and noisy. B. Quiet and empty.
C. Harmonious and lively. D. Comfortable and satisfying.
5. The author mentions mermaids in paragraph 4 to .
A. show his fondness of his schoolmates
B. highlight his love of reading literature
C. stress his desire for peace and being alone
D. share his imagination of the underwater world
6. What was the author’s attitude toward the girl at first?
A. Curious. B. Grateful. C. Impatient. D. Uninterested.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Girl Who Saved Me B. The Benefits of Swimming
C. The Bottom of a Swimming Pool D. The School Troubles that Pained Me

根据全文内容,尤其是文章第一段“There’s comfort in the bottom of a swimming pool.”(在游泳池底很舒服)的最后一段“I didn’t spend so much time at the bottom of a swimming pool after that. How could I when there was so much waiting for me on the surface?”(从那以后,我就没有在泳池底呆太久了。

(2023-2024学年高一下·江苏扬州·阶段练习)Life affects friendships. As we grow, marry, fight in wars, move across the country or change jobs. old friendships fall away and new ones come. As long as we live; the things around us change, and as long as things change, friendships are affected.
When we were children, we had best friends. No matter what happened we were still friends. We live our lives, however, and do what life calls for us to do. As we got older, memories are lost, faces get changed, and even friends’ names from childhood are forgotten.
Do you have a question about friendship? Do you wonder what to do with a friend who is no longer friendly? Perhaps you will see that you can’t control others. If someone wants to be your friend, it is their choice. All you can do is treat them well and do the best for them when you are with them. Then you wish them well when they leave.
You can talk to old timers and they will tell you that life is full of unbelievable joy and unbelievable sorrow, and that what bothers you today will one day becomes a memory and the pain will be gone. Seniors might tell you that you will learn more as you get older. They will tell you that friendships come and friendships go: Sometimes when they go it will hurt, but you will be okay with it. It is the process of getting along that matters. It’s the way life works, after all.

(2023-2024学年高一下·云南昆明·阶段练习)Who needs friends? According to most psychologists we all do, especially nowadays when so many other aspects of modern life are changing. It seems that having friends keeps us both healthy and happy.
The number of TV series about groups of friends shows just how important friendship is to us. Psychologist Dorothy Rowe says that many of us now turn to our friends, instead of our families, for advice and comfort. One woman named Rebecca she interviewed even told her that if she had got to choose between her husband and her friend, she would choose her friend.
Since our friends mean so much to us, it is not surprising that the happiest marriages are also friendships. “Once the romantic stage of a relationship has passed, it is friendship that holds people together,” says Rowe. If the couple do not make some changes. They will either get tired of each other and break up or stay together and look for friendship with others.
For men, friendship is usually based on doing things together rather than the private conversations that are typical of women friends. Men share time building a business or playing football together, but they don’t often share their feeling. Although many women find their relationship with a husband or boyfriend is not enough, many men say that their partner is their best friend. Even women who are very happily married are likely to become very unhappy without a close friend and can even find the break-up of a close friendship as painful as the end of a marriage.
Lasting friendships can provide a lot of the same support that families provided in the past, but the perfect situation is to have your family there for you as well. Friendships and family relationships can both change, but a friend will not consider you when making really important decisions in the same way that a family member will.
12. The example of Rebecca in paragraph 2 shows that some people think ________.
A. one friend is more than enough. B. friends are just like their family.
C. friends matter more than family. D. friends make them more comfortable.
13. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Couples tend to be friends in a good marriage.
B. Couples will have new friendship after they get married.
C. Friendship help couples build healthy relationships.
D. Friendship hold couples together when romance has passed.
14. What is the main difference between men’s and women’s friendship?
A. Women often do things together with friends.
B. Men seldom talk to their friends about their feelings.
C. Women often talk about business with friends.
D. Men often talk to their friends about work and family.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Friendship cannot replace family relationships.
B. Friendship can last longer than family relationships.
C. Friendship and family relationships are both changeable.
D. Family members help you make better decisions than friends do.
C 13. A 14. B 15. A
根据第二段中的“Psychologist Dorothy Rowe says that many of us now turn to our friends, instead of our families, for advice and comfort.
根据第三段中的“Once the romantic stage of a relationship has passed, it is friendship that holds people together (一旦一段关系的浪漫阶段过去,友谊就会把人们维系在一起)”可推知,婚姻中夫妻两人做彼此的朋友是婚姻长久之道。故选A。
根据第四段中的“For men, friendship is usually based on doing things together rather than the private conversations that are typical of women friends. Men share time building a business or playing football together, but they don’t often share their feeling. (对于男人来说,友谊通常是建立在一起做事的基础上,而不是女性朋友典型的私人对话。男人们共享时间一起创业或踢足球,但他们并不经常分享自己的感受。)”可知,男性的友谊基于共事,不太经常分享个人情感。故选B。
15. 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Lasting friendships can provide a lot of the same support that families provided in the past, but the perfect situation is to have your family there for you as well. (持久的友谊可以提供很多与过去家庭相同的支持,但最好的情况是有家人在身边。)”可知,虽然朋友能够提供家庭般的支持,但家人最好也能在身边提供支持,由此可推知,友谊不能完全取代家庭关系。故选A。

(2023-2024学年高一下·江苏南京·期末)“TALKING with you for one night is better than studying books for ten years” this was the comment of an old Chinese scholar after he had had a conversation with a friend. 16 And today the phrase “a night’s talk” has become a current expression for a happy conversation with a friend at night, either past or expected.
Such a supreme pleasure as having a perfect conversation with a friend at night is necessarily rare, for as the playwright Li Liweng has pointed out,“ 17 The discovery of a man up in a mountain temple, who really understands life and at the same time understands the art of conversation, must therefore be one of the keenest pleasures, like the discovery of a new planet by an astronomer or of a new variety of plant by a botanist.
There is an evident distinction between mere talking and conversation as such. This distinction is made in the Chinese language between shuohua (speaking) and tanhua (conversation), which implies that in conversation the language used is more chatty and leisurely and the topics more trivial and less business like.
18 We can discuss business with almost any person, but there are very few people with whom we can truly hold a night's conversation. Hence, when we do find a true conversationalist, the pleasure is equal to, if not above, that of reading a delightful author, with the additional pleasure of hearing his voice and seeing his gestures.
19 There will be chats about ghosts and fox spirits, mixed with amusing tales or 39 impassioned comments: on international affairs, and sometimes before we know it, a wise observer and conversationalist may shed light on things that have bothered you for a long time. 20
A. There is much truth in that statement.
B. Friendship fades without a sincere conversation.
C. Whatever it is, conversationalist does contribute to our happiness.
D. Such conversations remain among the memories that we cherish for life.
E. Those who are wise seldom know how to talk, and those who talk are seldom wise.
F. A similar difference may be noted between business letters and the letters of literary friends.
G. Sometimes we find it at the happy reunion of old friends, or among strangers on a distant journey.
A 17. B 18. F 19. G 20. C
16. 根据上文的““TALKING with you for one night is better than studying books for ten years” this was the comment of an old Chinese scholar after he had had a conversation with a friend.(“与君一席话,胜读十年书”,这是一位中国老学者与一位朋友交谈后的评价。)”和下文的“And today the phrase “a night’s talk” has become a current expression for a happy conversation with a friend at night, either past or expected.(今天,“a night’s talk”这个短语已经成为一个流行的表达方式,用来形容和朋友在晚上愉快的谈话,无论是过去的还是预期的。)”
17. 根据上文的“Such a supreme pleasure as having a perfect conversation with a friend at night is necessarily rare, for as the playwright Li Liweng has pointed out(像在晚上与朋友进行一次完美的交谈这样的无上快乐是非常罕见的,因为正如剧作家李立翁所指出的那样)”和下文的“The discovery of a man up in a mountain temple, who really understands life and at the same time understands the art of conversation, must therefore be one of the keenest pleasures, like the discovery of a new planet by an astronomer or of a new variety of plant by a botanist.(“因此,发现一个在山间寺庙里的人,他真正了解生活,同时也了解谈话的艺术,一定是最令人愉快的事情之一,就像天文学家发现了一颗新行星或植物学家发现了一种新的植物。”)”
18. 根据上文的“There is an evident distinction between mere talking and conversation as such. This distinction is made in the Chinese language between shuohua (speaking) and tanhua (conversation), which implies that in conversation the language used is more chatty and leisurely and the topics more trivial and less business like.(单纯的谈话和谈话本身有明显的区别。汉语中有“说”和“谈”的区别,这意味着在谈话中使用的语言更健谈,更悠闲,话题更琐碎,更不像商业。)”和下文的“We can discuss business with almost any person, but there are very few people with whom we can truly hold a night's conversation. Hence, when we do find a true conversationalist, the pleasure is equal to, if not above, that of reading a delightful author, with the additional pleasure of hearing his voice and seeing his gestures.(我们几乎可以和任何人讨论业务,但是很少有人能和我们真正进行一夜的交谈。因此,当我们找到一位真正的健谈者时,其乐趣即使不比阅读一位令人愉快的作家的作品更大,也与听到他的声音和看到他的手势的乐趣相当。)”可知,F项“在商业信函和文学朋友的信函之间也可以发现类似的区别。”承接上文,说明谈话与商业和文学朋友的来往不一样,引出下文解释它们的不同之处。故选F项。
19. 根据下文的“There will be chats about ghosts and fox spirits, mixed with amusing tales or 39 impassioned comments: on international affairs, and sometimes before we know it, a wise observer and conversationalist may shed light on things that have bothered you for a long time.(会有关于鬼魂和狐妖的聊天,夹杂着有趣的故事或39条慷慨激昂的评论:关于国际事务,有时在我们意识到这一点之前,一个明智的观察者和健谈者可能会揭示困扰你很长时间的事情。)”
20. 根据上文的“There will be chats about ghosts and fox spirits, mixed with amusing tales or 39 impassioned comments: on international affairs, and sometimes before we know it, a wise observer and conversationalist may shed light on things that have bothered you for a long time.(会有关于鬼魂和狐妖的聊天,夹杂着有趣的故事或39条慷慨激昂的评论:关于国际事务,有时在我们意识到这一点之前,一个明智的观察者和健谈者可能会揭示困扰你很长时间的事情。)”

To me, this is a very thought-provoking argument, as it points out the 44 (benefit) of online friendships. 45 an authority on the subject points out, online friends “fill holes real-life friends can’t fill”.

(2023-2024学年高一下·湖南·期末)When I was eight years old, my family moved from Japan to Canada. In Japan, I was a lively girl who enjoyed sharing my dolls and jokes and loved making people laugh with my jokes and creating imaginative games to play with my friends. However, when we settled in Canada, I struggled to adapt. I was born shy and wasn’t good at making new friends. During my first days at school I looked at others who were talking in groups happily. How I wish I were one of them!
We settled in a comfortable house with a nice garden where we grew vegetables—my responsibility. While I enjoyed looking after them, I often daydreamed about having a great garden like my classmate Alice’s, with its roses. Despite living in the same neighborhood, Alice and I hardly talked.
It was a hurricane that brought Alice and I closer.
The hurricane struck on an afternoon. The gentle wind turned into a heavy storm, and the sky became dark with thick gray clouds. Gradually, the hurricane took shape. My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Frightened, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed (见证) the extent of the damage the hurricane had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing (严重破坏) Alice’s garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, none of her family was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the roses and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. The roses that Alice used to be proud of were gone.

I was imagining how heartbroken Alice must feel seeing this when she appeared in the garden. Alice stood there, her eyes filled with tears as she surveyed the garden. Without hesitation, I rushed to her side, offering a comforting hug. “I’m so sorry, Alice,” I murmured, unsure of what else to say. She looked at me, her expression a mix of sadness and gratitude. Together, we began clearing the debris, restoring what we could from the destruction. After a while, our parents also joined us. We formed a team, uniting our efforts to rebuild what the hurricane had destroyed. As we worked side by side, laughter and conversation filled the air, easing the weight of the tragedy that had fallen on us.
Looking at the restored garden, we could imagine attractive roses next spring. Alice expressed her gratitude, her eyes shining with tears of appreciation as she hugged me tightly. In that moment, I felt a warmth spreading through me, knowing that our friendship had deepened through shared adversity. The restored garden was not just a witness to our hard work, but also a reminder of the bond that had blossomed between us. As we stood side by side, surveying our handiwork, I realized that sometimes, it takes a storm to reveal the true beauty of friendship.

7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?

C. The Bottom of a Swimming Pool D. The School Troubles that Pained Me
