My father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and said, “Get up, you’re going with me to cut the grass in the garden.”
The idea that my father thought I was old enough to help him in his business made me feel proud and excited. From sunrise to sunset, my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large garden, in a rich part of Atlanta, Georgia. By the end of the day, I was too tired to say a word but I felt good. This was my first time to help my father in his business. I got $6 for my work that day.
One day my father found some leaves I had missed and pulled me aside. “Take away these leaves!” he said seriously, “and don’t make me have to tell you to do it again.” The message was clear. Today I still value (珍视) it, which my father gave to me that day. It will always be helpful to impress the person you are working for.
After two years, I left home and went to another town to start my new life. Luckily for me, I quickly found a job to wash dishes in a restaurant. Every morning, I set off early, always with the same strong wish I got long ago. I felt like I was old enough to be independent and make a living by myself.
In fact, washing dishes was not exciting, but that didn’t matter. It taught me that any job was a good job and whatever I got from the job was more than I had before. I could learn something meaningful from every job and do it better and better. One day, a newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live with hard work and low pay. “If you only think about hard work and money, you won’t be happy in your life and you won’t do anything better .” I answered.
In every job, from cutting the grass to washing dishes, I’ve learned much. I’ve learned something that helps me in my next job.

Life is full of unexpected journeys. In 2014, my company Sinohydro sent me to work in Uganda on a big hydropower project. The project aimed to give power, jobs and money to Ugandan people, most of whom lived on less than $2 a day at that time.
When I first heard that I was going to Africa, I was a little worried. But I quickly realized people there were really friendly.
One day, my coworker and I stopped for gasoline (汽油) while driving to work. When we left the gas station, I dropped my phone but didn’t notice until 10 minutes later. I used my coworker’s phone to call mine.
I heard an African man’s voice on the other end, saying something in the local language. I told him that he was holding my phone. I thought that I wouldn’t get it back. But as we drove back to the gas station, we were surprised to see the man waiting in the hot sun. With a big smile, he gave my phone back to me. I was deeply moved.
Life in Africa is simple. There is not much to do in your spare time. But I enjoyed myself by organizing a dancing club and playing basketball games. We also came across wild animals. Once, I was chased by a seemingly cute baboon (狒狒). This disastrous encounter (灾难性的遭遇) with a wild animal completely ended my fantasy of having baby lions as pets!

Do you often compare yourself with other people? Whether it’s the number of goals you’ve scored at football or how many books you’ve read, it’s easy to compare yourself with someone else. It’s a natural behavior that helps humans learn from each other, live happily together and achieve more. However, it’s not always helpful and you can find yourself falling a comparison trap (对比陷阱).
Comparison can make us feel good and bad about ourselves. “Comparing up” means seeing someone is better than you and using that to encourage yourself to aim higher and try harder. However, sometimes it can make you feel rubbish about yourself and undermine your confidence. “Comparing down” is when you see someone who seems like they’re not doing as well as you. This might make you feel you’re doing well, but it can also stop you wanting to improve.
How do you escape (逃离) comparison trap? Notice how people make you feel and spend time with friends who celebrate your strengths (优势) rather than compare themselves to you. Find ones that make you laugh or show you lovely places instead. Finally, pay attention to your own achievements and how you can improve. The best person you can compete with is yourself.
Let’s make positive (积极的) comparisons. This means you value your own achievements and not someone else’s. Celebrate progress instead of the final result. It doesn’t matter if someone is better or faster than you, it’s important that how hard you try. Set some goals and pay attention to your progress. Instead of saying “I can’t do it”, say “I can’t do it yet”.
42.What is the purpose of comparing yourself with others according to the text?
A.To knock your confidence.
B.To learn from each other and achieve more.
C.To make others feel bad about themselves.
D.To stop you wanting to move.
43.Which word is close to the underlined word “undermine”?
A.Increase. B.Build. C.Weaken (削弱). D.Get.
44.What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A.Competing with yourself is not necessary.
B.Your feelings always depend on other people.
C.We can follow the ways to escape comparison trap.
D.Friends can make you laugh and show you lovely places.
45.What is the key to making positive comparisons?
A.Celebrating your progress. B.Valuing others’ achievements.
C.Trying to be better than others. D.Trying to be the best in everything.

六、阅读与回答问题(本题共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)
请认真阅读下面短文, 并根据短文内容回答问题。
It was a hot summer day and I had just pulled into the gas station to fill up my car. After filling it up, I started to walk inside to pay. That is when I noticed them. Two elderly women were standing back from their car. There was shock and fear on their faces. I looked and saw what they saw: five yellow jackets(小黄蜂)building a nest around their gas gap. I suddenly felt scared. I shared the ladies’ fear.
Yellow jackets have never been friends of mine. Several times these wasps(黄蜂)have attacked me while I was cutting the grass, stinging(蛰)me each time I ran over their nests. The worst time, however, was when I was a young boy. A friend of mine and I were playing in my backyard. I must have stepped on one of their nests again because before I knew it, both of us were being chased and stung by the yellow jackets while we ran away screaming. I ran to my mom with tears in my eyes. She ran a cold bath and put us both in it to ease(减轻)the pain before giving us medicine to help us feel better.
Still, I knew I couldn’t let fear stop me now. I reached into my pocket for a paper towel I had there. I tore out the nest with the paper towel and stepped on it while the wasps were buzzing around me. Both of the ladies thanked me for what I did.
You can’t let the fear of being stung — either physically or emotionally —keep you from doing what is right. We need to love each other and change the world for the better. And the only way you can do this is through helpful acts and kindness. Don’t let the fear in your life hold you back.
71.When did the story happen?

My Dream Job
Everyone has a dream. My dream is to be a computer programmer.
Two years ago, I liked playing computer games so much that I nearly dropped school. Luckily, a computer programme competition changed me completely. I got to be interested in programming and I knew computers were not just for playing those boring games.
Little by little, I have a new idea, that is, I want to make my own games that are helpful to students’ study. Of course, I know it is difficult to be a good computer programmer. So, I have to learn more knowledge about computers. For example, I’ll have some computer lessons when I have time. And I will read more computer books. In conclusion, I will do everything to improve my computer operation ability. I am sure my dream will come true one day.
