When Andres Valencia starts drawing at school, his friends gather around to watch. And they are not the only ones who have noticed his talent. Andres has surprised the art world as Andres by making his first global auction (拍卖).
The Californian art talent first picked up a paintbrush when he was five and now sells his pieces for tens of thousands of dollars. He has even been called “Little Picasso”. He uses a stepladder (折梯) to create his larger works and his talent was found early by his parents, Guadalupe, a lawyer, and Elsa, a jewelry designer. They encouraged his work, which is influenced by Pablo Picasso, but just wanted him to enjoy painting.
“To be quite honest, we try not to talk too much about it in front of him,” Mr. Valencia, his father, told CNN. “We certainly don’t refer to him as talent or anything like that. We just keep it simple with him. At home, he just does his art.”
Mr. Valencia said that he and his wife had resisted calls to homeschool their son so that he could focus more on painting. “We want him to go to school like a normal kid,” he said. “And because he’s a primary school student, he’s not like a lot of artists, who spend six, eight, or ten hours a day painting. He paints after school and on weekends, and he also plays with his friends.”
Andres earned global recognition at Miami Art Week. Art Miami director Nick Korniloff said that experts were impressed before they knew Andres’ age. Mr. Korniloff said, “We’ve had everybody attend our shows, all great famous persons, and personalities, but this little boy brought down the house.”
Mr. Korniloff was unwilling to predict how much the primary school student’s work may be worth to future investors but was positive that it would last “His works are as good as anything else I’ve seen in a long career,” he said.
4. What was Andres Valencia’s parents’ expectation of him?
A. He could focus on his study. B. He could become another Picasso.
C. He could enjoy himself painting. D. He could be famous at an early age.
5 Why did Andres Valencia’s parents refuse to homeschool their son?
A. They had little time to help him study.
B. They wanted him to live a normal life.
C They wanted more people to know his talent.
D. They planned to make him paint for longer hours.
6. What did Mr. Korniloff think about Andres Valencia’s future?
A. He expressed his confidence. B. He showed no interest.
C. He voiced his doubts. D. He expressed his disappointment.
7. What is the main idea of the text?
A. A little boy brought about a change in drawing.
B. A little boy turned his interest into a career.
C. A little boy excited the world with his paintings.
D. A little boy’s works were put up for global auction.
C
On the traditional Chinese calendar, Qingming, meaning clear and bright, falls on the fourth or fifth day of April. Across China the arrival of Qingming is accompanied by rising temperatures and frequent rain. Like other solar terms, Qingming is to guide the agricultural affairs and farming activities. Besides, it is also a time for people to enjoy spring and get closer to nature as trees turn ever greener and flowers bloom.
Besides being one of the Twenty-four Solar Terms, Qingming is also known as Tomb Sweeping Day, when people honor their ancestors and deal with the feelings of losing loved ones. Qingming is the only Chinese public holiday that is also one of the Twenty-four Solar Terms.
Though the solar term Qingming was first recorded in the Western Han Dynasty, it was not until the Tang Dynasty that it was declared a national holiday to honor ancestors. People celebrate the festival with customs from another traditional Chinese festival, Hanshi, meaning “cold meal”, which falls two days before Tomb Sweeping Day.
On that day, families get together and visit their ancestors’ tombs. They have the tombs cleaned, replace withered flowers with fresh ones and place snacks, fruits and drinks to the ancestors. Special food is served on Tomb Sweeping Day. Qingtuan with sweet fillings is one of the most popular foods. Boiled eggs are also associated with Qingming, with some areas following the tradition of egg painting.
“Qingming shows the traditional Chinese value of honoring the dead,” says Zhang Bo, a secretary-general of the China Folklore Society, “We miss the dead family members. We show our respect to them, honor them and will always remember them. Though the celebrations of the particular festival has gone through many changes, the spirit of the festival never changes.”
8. Who usually benefits from the solar terms according to the passage?
A. The farmer. B. The scientist. C. The teacher. D. The fisher.
9. Why does Qingming differ from other solar terms?
A. Because it has the longest history.
B. Because it is the only solar term regarded as a public holiday.
C. Because it is the only solar term for people to get close to nature.
D. Because it was the first solar term recorded in the Western Han Dynasty.
10. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. The reasons for celebrating Qingming. B. The activities during the tomb sweeping.
C. The special foods served on Qingming. D. The celebrations on the Tomb Sweeping Day.
11. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Qingming plays an important role in Chinese culture.
B. The way of celebrating Qingming is the same as before.
C. The spirit of Qingming has experienced some changes.
D. Zhang Bo suggests everyone should celebrate Qingming every year.
D
It is not only the environment, weather and the economy, but also culture and traditions around the world that are threatened by a warmer climate. Researchers at Lund University in Sweden and the University of Queensland in Australia have mapped what little is known about how climate change is eroding local knowledge and cultural heritage.
“We risk losing the memory of indigenous(本土的)people’s ways of life without this type of documentation,” says Guy Jackson, a researcher at Lund University.
Guy Jackson is one of the authors of a literature study that includes 100 scientific articles. One of the conclusions of the study is that cultural heritage is primarily seen as something of material value, such as a cultural site or historic building. In addition, Guy Jackson also pointed out in the study that the loss of cultural heritage is a potential future problem, even though there is evidence that it is already happening.
Focusing on material losses means that important traditions and knowledge systems are overlooked. “There are many non-material losses that are valuable for both individual identity and group identity,” says Guy Jackson.
The study shows a clear connect ion between loss of cultural heritage and changes in the natural environment. For example, songs and working methods change when groups lose traditions linked to a physical location. One scientific article points out that for the Inuit in Canada, identity is closely linked to the environment: “Inuit people are people of the sea ice. If there is no more sea ice, how can we be people of the sea ice?”
According to Guy Jackson, this could lead to several consequences(结果). Loss of traditions and cultural heritage can make it more difficult to deal with climate change, and weaken social cohesion(凝聚力), as people lose touch with traditional ways of life.
“Science should contribute by developing practical solutions and strategies that help with adaptation to the losses that have already happened,” Guy Jackson concludes.
12. What does the underlined word “eroding” in paragraph I probably mean?
A. Controlling. B. Destroying. C. Increasing. D. Improving.
13. What’s the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The future of cultural heritage.
B. The material value of cultural heritage.
C. The conclusions that Guy Jackson drew from his study.
D. The contribution Guy Jackson made to protect cultural heritage.
14. Why does the author mention the Inuit in the passage?
A. To highlight the importance of cultural diversity around the world.
B. To emphasize the need for practical solutions to climate change.
C. To show the connection between cultural heritage and social cohesion.
D. To prove the relation between the natural environment and cultural heritage.
15. Which of the following might Guy Jackson agree with?
A. Loss of cultural heritage hasn’t happened so far.
B. Cultural her it age is mainly viewed as something non-material.
C. Loss of Indigenous culture could stop the society from developing.
D. Loss of cultural heritage brings more challenges to solving climate change.

Some multi-story (多层) buildings are designed with a “soft” level that offers significantly less support than the levels above or below it. These buildings are called soft-story buildings. These floors cannot deal with the destructive forces caused by an earthquake. ____16____This will cause what is known as the “soft-story collapse (倒塌)”.
Soft-story buildings are characterized by having a story that has a lot of open space. ____17____ Hotels and office buildings can also have soft stories. Large retail space (零售空间) or floors with a lot of windows are common in such buildings.
If a building has a floor that is 70% less firm than the floor above it, it is considered a soft-story building. This soft story creates a major weak point in an earthquake. Soft stories are classically associated with retail space and parking garages. ____18____ When they collapse, they can make the whole building fall with them, sometimes making the structure unusable.
____19____ When builders apply for a permit to build a new structure, engineers may analyze the plans to ensure that no soft stories are built in. If the building department decides that the building will be structurally unsound in a quake, recommendations for improving the design may be included in the rejection (拒绝) letter.
Older buildings are of great concern to building departments and emergency services in areas where earthquakes are common. ____20____ Such projects may be relatively inexpensive, especially when compared with the cost of replacing a soft-story building after it collapses.
A. As a result, the soft story may fall.
B. A building with a soft story is similar.
C. A collapsing building is very dangerous.
D. So they are often on the lower stories of a building.
E. Parking garages, for example, are often soft stories.
F. These buildings are often in need of improvement to make them safer.
G. Many areas in an earthquake zone have exact building rules about soft-story buildings.

8-year-old Evan was standing by the sidewalk when he noticed Mrs Carter opening her shop again.
Several days ago, when Evan was passing by her store, he saw a closed sign on the store’s door. When the shop remained closed for not just two days, Evan was worried he’d never be able to get his “dream job”.
85-year-old Mrs. Carter was a woman selling flowers for a living and Evan had befriended her when he helped her cross the street one day.
Now seeing her again, Evan ran up to her and greeted her. “Can I help you today, Evan? Do you want flowers?” Mrs. Carter asked. Evan smiled, “I’m looking for a job! Can you please hire me?”
“A job?” the elderly lady laughed, thinking Evan was too little for that. But Evan proudly replied he knew many things, like making sandwiches and helping his mom get grocery bags from the car. Mrs. Carter laughed and asked Evan how much money she would have to pay him if she hired him.
Evan shook his head. “All I want is a big bouquet (花束) for my mom. Her name is Stacey and her birthday is one week away. Mom says we should work hard for what we want. I want to work hard for that bouquet. Can you hire me?” Evan asked. Mrs. Carter was impressed and nodded.
Then for a whole week, Evan would come to Mrs. Carter’s store in the evenings and help her, and having Evan around relieved Mrs. Carter’s boredom while she was working. Some customers thought Evan was lovely and entertaining, so they bought more flowers. Mrs. Carter’s business became better.
A week later, on Evan’s last day on the job, Mrs. Carter was emotional. They had grown close for working together, and Evan had become like a grandchild to her. While making a huge bouquet for Evan’s mother, Mrs. Carter secretly placed one envelope into the bouquet. The envelope contained $200. When handing him the bouquet, she said, “Will you come to see me someday, Evan? I’d be delighted to have you here.”
“I will!” Evan smiled and waved goodbye to Mrs. Carter.

5. Why did Andres Valencia’s parents refuse to homeschool their son?
A. They had little time to help him study.
B. They wanted him to live a normal life.
C. They wanted more people to know his talent.
D. They planned to make him paint for longer hours.
6. What did Mr. Korniloff think about Andres Valencia’s future?
A. He expressed his confidence. B. He showed no interest.
C. He voiced his doubts. D. He expressed his disappointment.
7. What is the main idea of the text?
A A little boy brought about a change in drawing.
B. A little boy turned his interest into a career.

B To emphasize the need for practical solutions to climate change.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. D

【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Loss of traditions and cultural heritage can make it more difficult to deal with climate change, and weaken social cohesion, as people lose touch with traditional ways of life.(传统和文化遗产的丧失会使应对气候变化变得更加困难,并削弱社会凝聚力,因为人们失去了与传统生活方式的联系)”可知,Guy Jackson可能同意文化遗产的丧失为解决气候变化带来了更多挑战的观点。故选D项。

8-year-old Evan was standing by the sidewalk when he noticed Mrs. Carter opening her shop again.
Carter.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Carrying the flowers, Evan rushed home to surprise his mom. “Happy birthday, Mom!” he cried, running up to her. Stacey was shocked at the huge bouquet. “Where did you get it?” she asked. When Evan told the whole story, Stacey was delighted and hugged her son closely. Evan smiled and was about to give her the bouquet when he suddenly noticed the envelope. He pulled it out and found the money in it. “But I told Mrs. Carter not to pay me! I think this got here by mistake!” said Evan.
Paragraph 2:
Then, Evan and his mom hurried to return the money to Mrs. Carter. When they reached her shop and were about to return the money, Mrs. Carter smiled and said, “It’s my pay for Evan. He did a very good job. Keep it. The flowers are my gift for you.” Stacey was grateful for Mrs. Carter’s kindness and invited her home for dinner that night to celebrate her birthday together. From then on, Stacey started to join Evan in helping Mrs. Carter in her shop and they became friends.
