Playing around on the playground with my friends, I was having fun when suddenly a wind carried my short, light-brown hair right off. Living with alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that caused my hair to fall out, I started wearing a wig (假发).
When I was just one, my mum had noticed a small bald patch (秃斑) on the left side of my head. The older I got, the more bald patches I’d developed. “Hair grows faster when you cut it,” Mum suggested when I was six, scissoring off the leftover. Waiting hopefully for my hair to grow, I soon realized it wasn’t coming back and disappointment set in.
Mum took me to the wig shop at the local shopping centre, but I was limited to just two synthetic (合成的) children’s wigs. I picked a light-brown one. While it covered my head, it didn’t look like real hair.
Still too young to really care, I used my wig much like a hat, taking it off if it got too hot and sweaty on the playground.
By 11, I began to realize just how different I was from other kids of my age.
“Why don’t I have hair? I just want to be like all the other girls,” I said to Mum, feeling down.
“You’re beautiful the way you are,” she always said.
A hairdresser who attended our local community had an idea, and helped fit me with my first wig made from human hair. Pulling it on, it looked more natural, and it was more comfortable.
Years on, when I was 25, I joined a Facebook support group for people living with alopecia. Meeting up with other members, it was the first time that I’d seen people who looked just like me.

Carl and I were close friends when we were sixteen years old. We were in the same class. He was a top student in my class, but I was on the opposite side. He loved reading books, but I was not good at reading any interesting books. His family had a big house with a beautiful garden, but my family had a small one for 5people. Despite all these differences, we both liked playing baseball.
One Sunday afternoon, we had just finished playing baseball in Carl’s back yard, I was about to get on my bike to go home. “Wait a minute, ” Carl said. He ran into his house and came back with a book for me to take home to read. I said nothing. I hated school because I hated reading. I kept the book for a couple of weeks. Then I returned it unread. I was worried that Carl would ask me some questions about the book. Luckily, Carl never asked me whether I liked it or not.
During the following two years, Carl lent me more books. Each time I returned them unread. I pretended to have read them all and thanked him for sharing these wonderful stories with me. I remembered the last one was Martin Eden by Jack London. Actually, I started to read the book carelessly. There were many words on every page that I didn’t understand. It was only a boring story about a poor boy who fought for chances to study at school. The main character, Martin Eden, had my own poor educational background, but managed to educate himself and became a published author. I returned it to him unfinished.
A few days after graduating from high school, Carl asked, “Benny, what college are you going to?” “I am not going to college because my father can’t afford the seventy-five dollars for tuition, ” I lied.

Once upon a time, on a land far away, there was a small village where the villagers lived a happy life. All of them were used to their robotic daily tasks and none of them would try something new, except one girl named Hannah. Very few people in the village could read or write, and Hannah was one of them. She loved to explore and would spend hours in the forests looking for new things.
One afternoon, when two of her friends, Amma and Lily, and she were on their adventurous trip, they came upon an abandoned (废弃的) small wooden house. The house looked very old.
“If we meet anything terrible, I am out of here!” Lily cried.
“Look at those overgrown grass. It seems like a place forgotten by time.” Amma followed.
Despite Mom’s warning against going around in abandoned places, Hannah’s curiosity got the better of her. Heart pounding wildly, she tip-toed (踮着脚尖走) to the door and slowly opened it and she was left surprised. In front of Hannah was a room full of books—books shining in the dust, bathed in the warm sunlight just waiting to be explored. Hannah’s excitement was obvious on her face as she jumped up and down with joy!
Hannah took a quick breath as she realized that she had found a hidden treasure. She dusted the books, the shelves, and what was left on the table. In her excitement, Hannah shared everything with her friends. She was thinking that her friends would share her excitement but instead, she heard roars of laughter!
Lily laughed, “Books? What’s the point of those dusty old things? We have everything we need provided by our parents. You’re wasting your time, Hannah.”
Another friend, Amma, cut in, “Yeah, I heard that reading too much messes up your head. Why trouble to do that when we have our usual life to live?”

It had been one of those terrible days. My three-month-old son, Tate, had not slept all day and now lay with his head on my shoulder, crying at times. I looked around. Laundry was waiting for the washing machine, dirty diapers (尿布) were giving out a smell, and the kitchen was also a mess and not to mention preparing dinner for my husband. I surveyed my dirty and disorderly little world. Tiredness and boredom washed over me, leaving me lightheaded and upset. When would this day end? Who could give me a hand?
For the last couple of weeks, I had managed to have the house cleaned and dinner well under way when my husband Jim got home from work at the end of the day. He worked in a company all day and I got to stay home with the baby. It seemed like a fair trade. So I struggled to offer him a comfortable house and a delicious dinner when he arrived home. Actually, Jim had been very impressed and he was always generous to say I had done a good job. His understanding and praise made me very happy with myself. Once a while I thought how smooth my life was!
This week, however, everything changed. Tate was not in normal state. He was getting his first tooth, which made him uncomfortable. Nothing seemed to relieve his pain for long. He seemed glued to me all day. He felt painful so he had a hard time having a short sleep. Therefore, I was unlikely to spare time to manage the housework.
Now it was 5:00 pm. My husband, Jim, was on his way home. I heated leftovers (剩菜) while holding my crying little baby. I felt more and more anxious. Then I heard the door opened and Jim came in. He surveyed the mess in the kitchen. “Not a good day?” When he turned to me, he didn’t need an answer. He could see I was tired and still in the sweats.

It was a moral lesson on Tuesday afternoon. Jodie hadn't really heard anything, maybe a whisper (低语), but when she turned around, the girls in the back row of the class were looking at her, trying to hide smiles. Mr Smith was talking about people's jobs. He also wanted to find out what his students wanted to do when they grew up. He called on Billy Mitzer first.
''My daddy works in a bank,'' Billy Mitzer said. ''I want to work in a bank too. There's lots of money in the bank.'' ''My parents have a grocery store,'' Emmy Disalvo said. ''But I want to be an airline pilot.''
Jodie liked it when Mr. Smith asked them questions like this. Mr. Smith was about to call on Jodie when the girls in the back row started laughing. Shirley Danes shouted, ''Jodie's daddy is a garbage man!''
Everybody in the class laughed out loud except Jodie. She felt embarrassed and her face turned bright red. She looked around the whole classroom. Everyone was laughing. Some kids were even holding their noses.
Mr Smith was angry. He seldom raised his voice, but at that time he did. ''Silence! I want everybody to be quiet,'' he shouted. The laughter stopped immediately. The sound of cars and people going by on the street came through the windows. ''You should feel sorry for yourselves,'' Mr Smith said. ''Being a garbage man is a difficult and greatly useful job. We should be grateful to Jodie's father. Where would we be without him?''
A few kids started laughing again. ''It's not funny,'' Mr Smith went on. ''Garbage is a serious matter. I think you all should say sorry to Jodie. And after that, you're all going to write Jodie's father a nice letter to tell him how much you appreciate what he does for all of us—in other words, keeping our city clean.''
Paragraph 1:
Everyone did as Mr Smith asked them to.

I wanted to tell him the true reason but I kept in silence.Although he was my best friend,I was shy to tell him what I thought in mind.At the moment,I had no intention of going to school. After
receiving failing grades on exams, I decided there was no way I would ever become a good student and get satisfactory grades. I wanted to drop out of school and planed to work in the bakery like my father .
The following day, Carl handed me an envelope with $75 inside and the book,Martin Eden. Why did he give me the book again? By the time I had finished reading it,I realized why Carl gave me the book again. He just didn’t want me to get used to backing down and giving up easily when I encountered difficulties. He didn’t want to see my life would be spent in the bakery, either.Inspired by Martin Eden,I made up my mind to accept the envelope and continued learning.I believe half the battle is won, if I can face trouble with courage .

47.Hannah was confused by the response and a little hurt too. But she did not give up on her books. She went home and all night long, she thought about the books she had found in the house . The next day, she quickly finished her breakfast and made her way to the small wooden house again. There she read different stories. Hannah’s imagination took her to a different world. She was so inspired by the books that the characters and the stories within them became her mentor. She learned a lot from them.
She wanted to share the treasure with everyone though it might be difficult. Making this her mission, Hannah started telling tales every day at her village. She added her own touch of curiosity every now and then to different stories, making them more interesting. In the beginning, only her very good friend came to the readings. But to her excitement, the word of her famous tales spread rapidly, causing more and more people to come to the readings. Seeing the interest of people, Hannah started writing her own stories of her own too. Soon, the word of Hannah’s storytelling spread to far-off towns.

(1) Jim approached us and took Tate from my arms. “Let’s give mom a break,” he whispered and kissed my forehead. With a surprising expertise, he juggled between calming Tate and starting the clean-up process. Within minutes, the room started to look orderly, and the comforting sound of the baby’s now gentle coos filled the air. Jim’s presence brought a sense of peace and normalcy, and I couldn’t help but marvel at how he turned our tumultuous day around. I sank into the couch my mind easing for the first time all day, grateful for Jim’s support.
(2) The next minute I was fast asleep. The weight of the day’s troubles lifted off my shoulders by Jim’s capable hands. When soft murmurs eventually pulled me from my slumber, I found the living room in a state of calm. Jim had not only cared for Tate, who now slept soundly, but also warmed up dinner. The aroma invited me back to reality, a gentle reminder that even the most chaotic days could end in quiet and comfort with the support of a caring partner.

47.Paragraph 1: Everyone did as Mr Smith asked them to. They all said "Sorry, Jodie", but Jodie could tell they didn't really mean it. She also knew nobody wanted to write her father a nice letter. She wished Mr Smith hadn't made them do it. Her face was burning red and she felt like crying. Mr Smith came to her desk and patted her shoulder, saying "Let's go out in the hall while everyone is writing those letters, so we can have a private talk." Jodie followed him out to the hall.
Paragraph 2: Jodie started crying out. She was embarrassed. She didn't want to cry in front of everybody, but she couldn't hold back her tears any more. Mr Smith was tall. He knelt and gave her his handkerchief. "I'm sorry that this happened," he said. "But remember, hard work done well is something to be proud of. We all should be grateful to garbage men." The teacher's words cheered Jodie up, and she felt proud of her father.
