The thematic context of this unit is “ M an and society ”. The well that changed the world is the read ing part of the unit . It introduces a Canadian calle d Ryan who has been helping children in Africa n countries with water shortage since childhood . It is a news feature , of which general characters are focused, detailed , infectious and descriptive . The illustration s show the picture of Ryan and an African child as well as a map about water shortage , leading students to understand the meaning of helping others . Through reading , students will bear social responsibilities and actively help others in voluntary services. ) ( 2. Analysis of the Target Students ) ( The target student are Senior 1 students with a high er level of language proficiency . L anguage ability Students have learned some English news features , so they can summarize the basic characteristics of summary. T hinking capacity Students can analyze and evaluate information gathered from the materi al, but they tend to judge on the superficial information without further contemplation and they are not capable to intake and reorganize the information by themselves. They need a further push on the habit of inquiry, organization, analysis, critical thinking and reflection. ) ( L earning ability As for reading strategy, most of students can grasp meaning of the passage by means of skimming and are basically capable of finding basic information by scanning with teacher’s guidance. But the ability to summarize and reorganize the passage should be further developed. Most of students tend to learn from the ready-made materials. Seldom do they ever try to gather information from various sources or make use of learning tools (e.g. mind maps) to facilitate their learning. Cultural awareness Students have the experiences of helping others and getting help from others and have the awareness of “ actively helping others ”. ) ( 3.
