英语学科教学设计 Reading:Tu Youyou Awarded Nobile Prize Teaching Philosophy The teaching is designed according to the View on English Learning Activities, which is proposed in the National English Curriculum Standards (2017). In order to develop students’ core competencies, three levels of activities are carefully designed, including comprehension, application and creation. Instructional Design Unit 1 People of achievements Reading: Tu Youyou Awarded Nobile Prize Analysis of teaching material This text is from Optional Compulsory English Book 1(by PEP) Unit 1 People of achievements. The theme is Man and Society. What: The text is a news story of a famous scientist called Tu Youyou. It is about Tu Youyou’s achievements in medicine and how she succeeded. Why: It’s meaningful for students to analyze the keys to Tu Youyou’s achievements and learn how to write a news story about a successful scientist, which helps to improve their scientific literacy and moral qualities. How: The third person narration is used in the text. The whole text can be divided into five parts: Tu Youyou’s life, motivation, process of achievements, the significance of Tu’s achievements and Tu’s feeling to win the prize. Analysis of students Students at Senior 2 are curious about science. They have already known the process of scientific experiments in previous learning. And they are skilled in locating factual information about scientists. However, they still want to know the life about scientists and how they succeed. It’s necessary for the teacher to take students’ ZPD into consideration and guide them to construct their own view on the scientists’ achievements by scaffolding. Teaching objectives After the class, students will be able to: 1) identify the type and structure of the text; 2) describe Tu Youyou’s personality and how she made achievements; 3) analyze the roles of Tu Youyou in the team; 4) explore how other scientist make achievements. Teaching key points & difficulties Key points: 1) describe Tu Youyou’s personality and how she made achievements; 2) analyze the roles of Tu Youyou in the team. Difficulty: Explore how other famous scientists make achievements. Teaching aids Computer, blackboard & chalk Teaching procedure *Time: 45 mins in total ( I. Pre-reading ) Activity 1 Brainstormig --- Comprehension The teacher introduces the origin of her own name and shows a poem called “鹿鸣” to arouse students’ interest : 3) Do you know where my name Lavinia come from? 4) Can you guess who is this child also named after a poem? · Do you know anything about her? 【 Purposes 】 Based on the theory of ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development), the activity is designed to arouse students’ interest, activate their background knowledge and learn some proper nouns, which belongs to the level of comprehension according to the View on English Learning Activities. Activity 2 Prediction --- Comprehension The teacher leads students to predict the content of the text with the help of the title: 1) Where would you most possibly find this passage according to the title? 2) If you were the journalist, what aspects would you write about according to the title. 【 Purposes 】 This activity aims to raise students’ reading expectations by predicting the type and main idea of the text. ( II. While-reading ) Activity 1 Fast reading --- Comprehension The teacher asks students to find out the main idea and structure of the text by skimming: 1) What’s the text about? 2) What’s the main idea of each part? 【 Purposes 】 This activity helps students identify the important information of the text by skimming and shows a model of write a news story about scientists in the following post reading stage. Activity 2 Detailed reading ----- Comprehension The teacher asks students to use verbs to complete the chart according to the text and their experiment in their science classes. After completing the table, the teacher guides students to analyze the personality of Tu Youyou according to the verbs and some other details. Stage 1 What did she/they do? ( teacher ) ( l eader ) ( backstone ) 【 Purposes 】 By analyzing the role of Tu Youyou in her team, students can improve their thinking quality such as inference. ( III. Post-reading ) Activity 6 Retelling (5 mins) Application The teacher sets a real-life scenario: If you were the editor of the magazine house in your school, how will you introduce Tu Youyou and his achievement. Then, the teacher will invite students to retell the story of Tu Touyou by using the given structure. ( the process of Tu’s achievements ) 【 Purposes 】 This activity belongs to the level of application according to the View on English Learning Activities. Students will try to internalize the knowledge and retell Tu’s road to achievements in a real-life scenario. Besides, this activity lays a foundation for students to join in later discussion in Activity 7. Activity 7 Discussion (Group work / 10 mins) Creation The teacher invites students to share a story about someone who has achieved gray achievements with their group members. The structure and some useful phrases are provided for reference: How will you introduce successful people that you know to your classmates? In the activity, students will transfer the knowledge from Tu’s way to success to their real life.
