Guyu, also known as “Grain Rain”, is the sixth solar term (节气) in the traditional Chinese calendar. This year,it starts from April 19.
It takes its name from the Chinese saying “rain produces hundreds of grains”. Its name shows the relationship between weather and farming during this period. As the last solar term in spring, this period sees warmer weather and an increase in rainy days. It creates a wonderful environment for plants and animals. For farmers, Guyu marks the best time for planting.
“Grain Rain is also a solar term that shows rich traditional Chinese cultural characteristics (特征),” Chinese culture expert Liu Xiaochang told Cover News. In Chinese mythology (神话), before 2500 BC, Cang Jie created a set of characters for better record-keeping. Following his invention, grains began to rain down from the sky.
Though we do not know if Cang Jie really did create the characters, Grain Rain day has become a day to honor Cang Jie and the invention of the Chinese language.

The book The Yellow Storm (《四世同堂》) is one of the most popular works of the Chinese writer Lao She (1899-1966). He started to write the story in 1944 in Chongqing and finished it in 1948 in America. It’s a story about a Chinese family with four generations (世代) living in Peking during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (抗日战争).
The writer uses different characters to show what society was like at that time. Elder brother Qi Ruixuan is an English teacher. Though he wants to help fight in the war, he must look after his large family and make money. Qi Ruiquan, the youngest son and a university student, becomes an underground fighter.
There are other fighters like Qi Ruiquan, such as the truck driver Qian Zhongshi. He drives a truck into a cliff (悬崖) and kills all the Japanese soldiers on the truck, along with himself.
All characters are ordinary (普通的) people. Some are doing things for their own good, while others choose between their families and the battlefield (战场).
The story always gives readers a feeling of hope. It tells us that justice (正义) will finally win. After reading it, you will have a strong feeling of pride for the brave Chinese people. They fight until the last minute of darkness.

There is a big difference between knowing a country from social media and experiencing it in person. This is what students from the US and China found out during an eight-day exchange (交换) journey.
From March 24 to 31, a group of 15 students from the US went on an educational and cultural exchange in China. For Ian Sierra, a 15-year-old 10th grader, this was his first time going abroad.
While in Beijing, Sierra bravely tried douzhi, a fermented (发酵的) bean juice. It is a challenge even for locals but he finished three bowls at one time.
Apart from Chinese food, Sierra loved the exchange and homestay program at Beijing No. 4 High School International Campus (BHSFIC). “I tried out table tennis after classes ended, and the Chinese students played like pros (职业选手),” he said. “In the States, students usually do sports through clubs and sports teams… Sports are more for fun here.”
The learning was two-sided.
