It took a thunderstorm for Gordon Hempton to truly enjoy quiet. After a visit home to Seattle, Washington in 1980, the graduate student was tired from the 3,000 km way back to his university in Wisconsin.
The August temperature was high and it was unnecessary to live in a hotel. Hempton got out of the car and lay down in a field. Suddenly, a thunderstorm sounded overhead. Too tired to move, he decided to stay right there. What he did next led to an awakening (顿悟): he listened.
“I heard all: the movement of the air, the insect activity, the drops of the rain, the echo of the thunder,” he says. “My eyes were closed, but it was as if I could see all the creatures that I had been living with but never known.” Hempton’s awakening was so lively that he quickly dropped out of university, giving up a degree in Economics (经济学位), and changed his life.
After that, Hempton travelled within Olympic National Park with microphone and recorder, where he captured (捕捉) the wonderful sounds from the wildlife in quiet. Quiet, in this sense, does not mean complete silence. He says, “We might say that quiet offers a chance to be aware of our surroundings.”
Although he has these ear-attracting experiences, Hempton realized that quiet places were disappearing, with noise pollution making it more difficult to listen to the quiet sounds of nature.
In 1998, Hempton went to Hawaii to collect sounds of endangered animals and plants, which were played at a photography exhibition later.
Now 67, he is a famous acoustic ecologist (声学生态学家) and co-founder of Quiet Parks International (QPI), an organization that protects natural sounds by testing sound levels and encouraging visitors to understand the importance of quiet.

58.What’s the genre (体裁) of this passage?

C
Type in “A cat wants to go to space” and ask the robot to write a bedtime story. Just one second later, you’ll get the story of Max, who was on his way past many difficulties to sing among the stars.
This robot writer is real. It’s called ChatGPT. From writing Shakespeare-style poetry to making music, ChatGPT has amazed the world since its launch out in late 2022 by the US company OpenAI. OpenAI developed it to generate (生成) human-like texts. It can translate languages, talk with people and write songs, poems and even jokes. It’s one of the most powerful AI of its kind, with the complete writing abilities of a real person!
People around the world have tried ChatGPT and posted their results on social media. Some used it to write history reports, some asked it to take notes of presentations, and some even generated advice on how to communicate with people at a party, reported The Atlantic.
The power of ChatGPT lies in its speed and understanding of complicated (复杂的) matters. We may spend hours researching, understanding and writing an article. But ChatGPT can produce a well-written one in seconds. Another good thing about it is that if you ask dark, harmful questions, such as how to make weapons (武器), it will not give you an answer.
ChatGPT comes along at a time when AI is becoming increasingly able to do creative tasks. There is no doubt that ChatGPT is a powerful tool. However, some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned (禁止) the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT on the local networks and computers, CNN reported. The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on homework. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread improper information.
“It does not build critical-thinking (批判性思维) and problem-solving skills,” said Jenna Lyle, from the New York City Department of Education. “The materials they create are difficult to tell from those made by humans. This causes many problems, such as the problem of copyright. Since the system is largely trained using words from the Internet, it can also pick up on the Internet’s biases (偏见) and stereotypes (刻板印象) about certain groups. These are all the things that depend on humans to solve.”
61.At the beginning of the passage, the cat story was written to ______.
A.lead in the topic of the article B.express the writer’s idea
C.introduce a bedtime book D.surprise the readers
62.According to the passage, which of the following can ChatGPT do?
A.Make dishes. B.Sing songs.
C.Translate texts. D.Create new languages.
63.What do we know about ChatGPT?
A.Many students have used ChatGPT for cheating. B.It is one of the most useful tools.
C.It still needs further development. D.It helps develop learning skills.
64.What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.How people feel about writing in the future. B.What problems AI writing can cause.
C.People’s wrong ideas about AI writing. D.Human efforts in developing AI writing.
65.The writer’s writing purpose is to ______.
A.show some thoughts on ChatGPT B.thank scientists for their new achievements
C.encourage people to use ChatGPT D.share the experience of using AI

It took a thunderstorm for Gordon Hempton to truly enjoy quiet. After a visit home to Seattle, Washington in 1980, the graduate student was tired from the 3,000 km way back to his university in Wisconsin.
The August temperature was high and it was unnecessary to live in a hotel. Hempton got out of the car and lay down in a field. Suddenly, a thunderstorm sounded overhead. Too tired to move, he decided to stay right there. What he did next led to an awakening (顿悟): he listened.
