B I live in a small town in Yunnan Province, on the historic Tea Horse Road. My family has lived there for many generations. I remember when I was very young, old people told me about the horse caravan (马队) traders who had traveled that path for centuries, carrying tea, silks, etc. to markets as far away as India. So, when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet without any modern transportation, I was blown away. I couldn’t imagine that there could still be such an unusual person in the world. It was even more surprising when one day in May of 2021, I found myself meeting Paul at a noodle shop. It was his first time in China. Paul talked to me with great excitement about the history and discovery in my region of China. He spoke of the Shu-Yandu Dao (the Sichuan to India trading route), the Southern Silk Road, the Tea Horse Road, and the 17th-century Chinese explorer Xu Xiake. Paul considered him a hero and in a sense a Chinese pioneer of slow tourism. Then I made my biggest decision of 2021: I would accompany Paul for hundreds of miles on his walk toward my home of Yunnan. On September 28, 2021, we finally set out. Our days were simple: walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. I ate when I was hungry, walked after I ate, and slept when I got tired. As I accompanied Paul to walk on ancient paths through great mountains I seemed to hear the distant sound of horse bells lost in time. Together, we were amazed by the biodiversity (生物多样性) of the Gaoligong Mountains and moved by long-past stories that had happened there. I walked from Yusan village to a lakeside town in Yunnan called Eryuan—just a warm-up trip into China for Paul. But after only 410,000 paces. I reached a real appreciation for my home. 4 How did the author feel when he first heard of Paul’s story? A. Amazed. B. Inspired. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring. 5. Which of the following can best describe Paul? A. An advocate of Chinese traditions. B. A supporter of slow travel experiences. C. A writer documenting his global journey. D. A historian specializing in ancient trade routes. 6. What might the author have gained from his walk? A. Mastery of modern transportation. B. A deeper connection with his family. C. Rediscovery of the world around him. D. Insights into ancient trading practices. 7. What might be the best title for the text? A. Looking for a Way Home B. Traveling Around Yunnan C. Exploring the Tea Horse Road D. Walking with a Modern Explorer C It’s easy not to think much about the intelligence of insects. Tiny creatures with even tinier brains — how smart can they be? But as biologists begin to rethink how animals think, even insects are being seen in a new light. Now a new study from the University of Bristol finds that Heliconius butterflies are capable of spatial (空间的) learning. The results provide the first experimental evidence of spatial learning in any butterfly species. We have known about spatial learning in insects. but mostly in ant and bee species that live socially in a shared nest. However, as noted by the University, the new research suggests that complex learning skills, such as the use of spatial information, may be more prevalent in insects than previously thought. The team set up three spatial learning experiments in Heliconius butterflies. They started small, testing to see if the butterflies could learn the location of a food reward in a one-square-meter area containing 16 artificial flowers. Then they increased the spatial dimension to see whether Heliconius could learn to connect food with either the left or right side of a three-square-meter two-armed maze (迷宫). Finally, they increased the distances again using large outdoor cages to see if the butterflies could learn the location of food in a 60-meter-wide T-maze. The butterflies were successful in all three experiments. Next, the researchers plan to mainly look into Heliconius’ relative capability of spatial learning as opposed to closely related species that don’t feed on pollen (花粉). “This would help to show how the development of enhanced cognitive (认知的) abilities can be shaped by an animal’s ecology,” explains the University. The team also plans to study just how Heliconius manages to find its way through the world. It is believed that visual clues play an important role in this — but they may also rely on other clues, such as the sun. 8. What does the new study find? A. Spatial learning is rare in social insects. B. Insects’ brains determine their intelligence. C. A butterfly species exhibits spatial learning ability. D. Butterflies share life-related behaviors with ants and bees. 9. What does the underlined word “prevalent” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Commonly found. B. Effectively taught. C. Difficult to study. D. Unusual to develop. 10. In which aspect do the three spatial learning experiments differ from each other? A. The types of flowers used. B. The design of the maze structure. C. The complexity of the food rewards. D. The spatial extent of each experiment. 11. What might the follow-up study of Heliconius butterflies focus on? A. The significance of Heliconius’ visual development. B. The impact of pollen on Heliconius butterflies’ intelligence. C. The development of different butterflies’ cognitive abilities. D. The cognition comparison between Heliconius and other species. D The ocean is a rich and seemingly lawless frontier. It’s a watery wild west, irresistible to humans hoping to rob its many riches. That is the point throughout The High Seas: Greed, Power and the Battle for the Unclaimed Ocean, a fast-paced and thoroughly reported book by science journalist Olive Heffernan. The book begins by going rapidly through the waves of history that brought us to today. Then Heffernan devotes a chapter each to different ways people are increasingly occupying international waters, an expansion called the Blue Acceleration. Some are hunting for new fishing grounds. Others are searching for new medicines in the DNA of deep-sea living things. Still others are exploring how to boost the ocean’s carbon uptake to help slow climate change. Even the space industry wants a piece of the ocean — to create watery graveyards for useless spacecraft. The description from one ocean ambition to another emphasizes one of the book’s biggest takeaways: We’ve established an unstable new type of ocean ecosystem, and it is going to be incredibly difficult maybe impossible to balance all the priorities while also protecting ocean health and biodiversity. Conflicting desires to rob the sea and protect it show up over and over again. “Nations urging conservation in one area may push for increasing exploration in another,” Heffernan writes. The European Union in 2021, for example, offered prizes to its fishing boats to range farther offshore, even as it committed to sustainable fishing. Nations promising to protect sea life and fighting climate change may be the same countries that support deep-sea mining, which may be harmful to life on the ocean floor. “The problem,” Heffernan says,“isn’t that the high seas are without any rules. Rather, organizations and bodies each use their own rulebook.” By the final chapter —“Hope for the high seas”— it’s hard to know what anyone could actually do to help save the ocean. “We’re at a crucial crossroads.” Heffernan writes. “We can continue going ever deeper and further offshore in our search for new sources of wealth, or we can strike a more sustainable balance.”she added. 12. What might the Blue Acceleration refer to? A. The extensive exploration of oceans. B. The negative influence of climate change. C. The rapid expansion of oceanic research. D. The increased competition in space industry. 13. What might be the reason for “conflicting desires” according to Heffernan? A. The greed of human nature. B. The absence of ocean laws. C. The lack of a consistent ocean policy. D. The gap in technological development. 14. What can we know about Heffernan? A. She doubts international cooperation. B. She cares about the ecological consequences. C. She is optimistic about technological advancements. D. She is certain of the success of ocean exploration. 15. What is the text? A. A news report. B. A book review. C. A research paper. D. A policy proposal. Even when you have a garden, you can still take a break from time to time! Here are some tips to help make sure your garden crops survive when you go away in summer for a little while. ____16____ Automated watering systems might be the first thing that crowds into your mind. They usually work at set times to keep your plants from thirst. But in smaller spaces you might consider different solutions like adding watering globes and water bottles placed upside down in beds or planters. ____17____ Work out rough water needs for specific plants and add cloth, if necessary, to absorb water from a container into the soil at the base of plants. With calculation and enough watering solutions, most of your plants will survive. In dry areas, it can be beneficial to reduce the amount of water your crops will require while you are away. ____18____ This could potentially help you gain a little more time. Think about how you can still ensure enough daylight for crops while also providing some shade for them during the hottest part of the day. Pests could also be an issue if you are not there. Taking an integrated pest management approach is the best policy. ____19____ Remember, biodiversity is key and you need some pests to be present in order to attract the things that eat them and keep their numbers down. ____20____ Covering crops with netting or row covers could prevent a major crop disaster, so adding additional protection could be a good idea. A. Work with nature, rather than fight it. B. You might also water the plants more before you leave. C. Water will often be the biggest concern in your absence. D. Shade specific parts of your garden to reduce wetness loss. E. Combine plants and add companion plants for beneficial interactions. F. These allow water to be released slowly to provide water for your plants. G. While her kids, the student moviemakers, jumped out of the car and started unloading equipment to make a film in the park, she sat in the driver’s seat, reading a book. She suddenly felt a little sad. These kids used to need a parent’s advice, help and caring. Now, as older teenagers, they were making their own decisions. She was just their driver. Anything else that she might be able to give to them was unwelcome and not required. Emptied of its movie-related contents, the car only had bags of snacks and water and some personal items left. Amy’s job, as the driver, was to stay within calling distance with the keys so that if anything was needed she could open the car. Amy got out of the car, looking around for a place to sit down to finish reading her book in the fresh air. It was early, but the sun was already beating down, and Amy didn’t want to sit in the heat. She found a park bench (长椅) against a wall, in the shade. She noticed that a man was sitting on one end, but there was plenty of room for at least two more people. When she was slowly walking in the man’s direction, the man noticed her. He thought she probably was just having a walk around and wouldn’t come to sit by him. He had just spent the night on the bench. Besides dirty clothes and hair, he had a smell of body sweat. He knew he was an unwelcome person. Usually people wouldn’t even look at him, let alone sit by him. “What if the lady asks me to leave and sits here by herself?” the man wondered. It was a hot day, and it wasn’t easy for him to find another place to sit out of the sun. Moreover, he hadn’t eaten any food for so long that he didn’t have much strength to move around. Soon, Amy stopped by the bench and sat on the other end. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Gathering his courage, the man asked Amy, “Madam, I’m so hungry. As I accompanied Paul to walk on ancient paths through great mountains, I seemed to hear the distant sound of horse bells lost in time. 4. How did the author feel when he first heard of Paul’s story? A. Amazed. B. Inspired. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring. Walking with a Modern Explorer 【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者从小生活在云南的一个小镇上,2021年5月的某天在面馆遇到了慢旅行者Paul,对他徒步环游世界的旅行方式感到惊讶,决定在去往云南家乡的路上陪他一起走一程,从而重新认识了自己家乡的故事。 【4题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“So, when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet without any modern transportation, I was blown away. I couldn’t imagine that there could still be such an unusual person in the world. (当我首次听闻保罗·萨洛佩克打算仅凭自己的双脚,不借助任何现代交通工具走遍全球时,我感到非常震惊。我无法想象世界上竟然还有如此不同寻常的人.)”可知,作者一开始听到Paul的故事时感到很吃惊。故选A。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet without any modern transportation(保罗·萨洛佩克打算仅凭自己的双脚走遍全球,不借助任何现代交通工具)”和第二段中的“Paul considered him a hero and in a sense a Chinese pioneer of slow tourism(保罗认为他是英雄,从某种意义上说,是中国慢速旅游的先驱)”可知,Paul徒步环游世界,不依赖现代交通方式,展现了一种慢旅行方式。他认为17世纪中国的探险家徐霞客是英雄,在某种意义上是中国慢旅行的开拓者。由此可推断出,Paul是慢旅游的支持者。故选B。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“As I accompanied Paul to walk on ancient paths through great mountains, I seemed to hear the distant sound of horse bells lost in time. 根据第一段中的“So, when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet without any modern transportation, I was blown away. I couldn’t imagine that there could still be such an unusual person in the world. (当我首次听闻保罗·萨洛佩克打算仅凭自己的双脚,不借助任何现代交通工具走遍全球时,我感到非常震惊。我无法想象世界上竟然还有如此不同寻常的人。)”、倒数第二段“Then I made my biggest decision of 2021: I would accompany Paul for hundreds of miles on his walk toward my home of Yunnan. On September 28, 2021, we finally set out .( 然后我做出了2021年最重要的决定:我会陪伴保罗走几百英里,前往我的家乡云南。2021年9月28日,我们终于出发了。)”以及最后一段“As I accompanied Paul to walk on ancient paths through great mountains, I seemed to hear the distant sound of horse bells lost in time. D。 C It’s easy not to think much about the intelligence of insects. 【答案】8 C 9. A 10. D 11. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。布里斯托大学的一项新研究发现。袖蝶属蝴蝶具有空间学习能力,这是首次在实验中证明蝴蝶具有空间学习能力。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“Now a new study from the University of Bristol finds that Heliconius butterflies are capable of spatial (空间的) learning. The results provide the first experimental evidence of spatial learning in any butterfly species.(现在,布里斯托尔大学的一项新研究发现,蝴蝶具有空间学习能力。这一结果为蝴蝶的空间学习提供了第一个实验证据)”可知,新的研究结果证明一种蝴蝶表现出空间学习能力。故选C。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“We have known about spatial learning in insects, but mostly in ant and bee species that live socially in a shared nest.(我们已经知道昆虫的空间学习能力,但主要是在蚂蚁和蜜蜂物种中,它们群居在一个共同的巢穴中)”又根据下句中的“However”可知,两句之间构成转折关系。由此可推断出,此句指“复杂的学习技能,例如空间信息的使用,在昆虫当中可能比以前认为的更普遍”,prevalent意为“普遍的”,commonly found与其意思相近。故选A。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“They started small, testing to see if the butterflies could learn the location of a food reward in a one-square-meter area containing 16 artificial flowers. Then they increased the spatial dimension to see whether Heliconius could learn to connect food with either the left or right side of a three-square-meter two-armed maze (迷宫). Finally, they increased the distances again using large outdoor cages to see if the butterflies could learn the location of food in a 60-meter-wide T-maze.(他们从小范围开始,测试蝴蝶是否能在一个有16朵人造花的一平方米的区域里知道食物奖励的位置。然后,他们增加了空间维度,看看袖蝶属蝴蝶是否能学会将食物与一个三平方米的双臂迷宫的左边或右边联系起来。最后,他们再次使用大型室外笼子增加距离,看看蝴蝶能否在60米宽的T形迷宫中学习食物的位置)”可知,三个实验的主要区别在于空间范围的不同。故选D。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Next, the researchers plan to mainly look into Heliconius’ relative capability of spatial learning as opposed to closely related species that don’t feed on pollen (花粉). “This would help to show how the development of enhanced cognitive (认知的) abilities can be shaped by an animal’s ecology,” explains the University.(接下来,研究人员计划主要研究袖蝶属蝴蝶的相对空间学习能力,而不是密切相关的不以花粉为食的物种。“这将有助于展示增强认知能力的发展如何受到动物生态的影响,”该大学解释说)”可推知,后续研究将集中在袖蝶属蝴蝶和其他相关物种之间的认知能力之间的比较。故选D。 D The ocean is a rich and seemingly lawless frontier. 【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇书评。文章主要介绍了由科学记者Olive Heffernan 所著的The High Seas: Greed, Power and the Battle for the Unclaimed Ocean(《公海:贪婪、权力和争夺无人海域之战》)一书中所介绍的主题、内容等以及Heffernan对海洋未来情况的担忧。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段第二句“Then Heffernan devotes a chapter each to different ways people are increasingly occupying international waters, an expansion called the Blue Acceleration.”(然后,Heffernan分别用一章的篇幅讲述了人们越来越多地占领国际水域的不同方式,这种扩张被称为“蓝色加速”。)可知,人们用不同的方式不断占领国际水域,这种扩张方式就被称作“蓝色加速”。且下文列举了寻找新的渔场、在深海生物的DNA中寻找新药、探索如何提高海洋的碳吸收量以帮助减缓气候变化等方式。由此可知,“蓝色加速”指的是人类对海洋的广泛探索。故选A项。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段最后一句““The problem,” Heffernan says,“isn’t that the high seas are without any rules. Rather, organizations and bodies each use their own rulebook.””(Heffernan说:“问题不在于公海没有任何规则。相反,组织和机构各自使用自己的规则手册。”)可知,Heffernan指出问题不在于公海没有任何规则,而是各个组织和机构都使用自己的规则。由此可推断出,冲突欲望的根本原因在于缺乏一贯的全球海洋政策,导致不同国家和组织在海洋利用和保护方面采取不同的规则和措施。故选C项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章中的描述,特别是第四段第二句““Nations urging conservation in one area may push for increasing exploration in another,” Heffernan writes.”(“敦促保护一个地区的国家可能会推动对另一个地区的更多探索,”Heffernan写道。)及第四句“Nations promising to protect sea life and fighting climate change may be the same countries that support deep-sea mining, which may be harmful to life on the ocean floor.”(承诺保护海洋生物和应对气候变化的国家,可能就是支持深海采矿的国家,深海采矿可能对海底生物有害。)和最后一段第二句““We’re at a crucial crossroads.” Heffernan writes.”(“我们正处在一个关键的十字路口。”Heffernan写道。)可知,Heffernan在书中提到了人们对海洋资源需求的不断增长,以及这些需求与保护海洋健康和生物多样性之间的冲突。还提到我们正处于一个关键的十字路口,故我们需要更加可持续的平衡方式去探索海洋资源。由此可推断出,Heffernan担忧海洋过度开采带来的生态失衡的后果。故选B项。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段第二句“That is the point throughout The High Seas: Greed, Power and the Battle for the Unclaimed Ocean, a fast-paced and thoroughly reported book by science journalist Olive Heffernan.”(这就是贯穿《公海:贪婪、权力和争夺无人海域之战》的观点,这是一本由科学记者Olive Heffernan撰写的快节奏、全面报道的书。)并结合全文可知,本文概述了Olive Heffernan所著的The High Seas: Greed, Power, and the Battle for the Unclaimed Ocean一书的主题、内容和核心信息,包括人们对海洋资源的不断增长的需求,以及由此产生的冲突以及保护海洋健康和生物多样性的挑战。文章符合书评的结构特点。故选B项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Even when you have a garden, you can still take a break from time to time! G. Sometimes, however, barriers may be required to keep crops safe from pests. 【答案】16. C 17. F 18. D 19. A 20. 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。 Soon, Amy stopped by the bench and sat on the other end. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Gathering his courage, the man asked Amy, “Madam, I’m so hungry. Could you give me a hand?” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Soon, Amy stopped by the bench and sat on the other end. She found that the man was looking at her strangely. She looked at him and quickly noticed his messy clothes and hair, and she was soon faced with a strong and unpleasant smell of body sweat. The man appeared embarrassed, thinking, “If she asks me to leave, I’ll leave.” To his surprise, Amy just smiled at him. They both sat there quietly. Amy was reading while the man was watching the filming. Finally, the man was so hungry that he felt he would faint soon. Gathering his courage, the man asked Amy, “Madam. I’m so hungry. Could you give me a hand?” Amy replied, “Wait a minute.” Then, she rushed to her car and came back with food and water. The man thanked Amy sincerely and then enjoyed the delicious food. As she was about to leave, Amy gave the man some money. Touched, the man said to Amy, “Usually, people won’t even look at me, let alone sit by me and give me money. Thank you for treating me like a human being.” Amy smiled, glad that her small action brought an unlucky person joy and warmth. 词汇激活 行为类 ①发现:find/spot ②晕倒:faint/pass out ③给:give/offer  情绪类 ①惊讶:surprise/astonishment/amazement ②高兴的:glad/delighted 【点睛】[高分句型1]. She found that the man was looking at her strangely.
