After a long and cold winter, the weather was starting to get warmer, so I decided to put on one of my summer shirts. When I tried it on, however, I was shocked at how tight it was. I must have put on weight. My parents said I don’t look much different. But that must be because we spend every day together. So I stood on the bathroom scales (体重秤) and my guess was confirmed. I weighed 82 kilos, whereas previously I had weighed 74. But what should I do to lose weight? Go to the gym? Take up a sport? After collecting some ideas about weight loss online, I decided the first thing I needed to do was look at my diet. I opened the kitchen fridge to see which foods I could do without. The ice cream would have to go. So would the chocolate bars. Also, I should replace butter with something healthier. But what about cheese? I should really stop eating it — but I love it so much, so that will have to stay. Anyway, at least I’ve made a start on my healthier diet and I have noticed in recent weeks that my clothes are starting to feel a little looser. A What you will find here is beyond towering mountains, dense forests, and picturesque scenery. She would be that teacher. So, in 1997, at the age of just 13, she founded a school in the courtyard of her home, free to all. Children were to be treated with love and respect; beatings were not allowed. Her parents were not in a position to help her. So at 13, she learned to do embroidery (刺绣). The US, for the first time, dropped out of the top 20 of the list, falling to 23rd place from 15th last year, driven by a large drop in the well-being of Americans under 30. The age difference is strikingly evident: The US ranks in the top 10 for those over 60, but for those under 30, it ranks 62nd, pulling down the overall score. The findings were announced Wednesday to mark the United Nations International Day of Happiness. It’s based on data collected by the research company Gallup and analysis by academics led by Oxford University in the UK. For the first time this year, the report gave separate rankings by age group. The report found that Lithuania topped the list for people under 30, while Denmark is the world’s happiest country for those of 60 years old and more. “We had picked up in recent years from scattered (零散的) sources of data that child and youth well-being, particularly in the United States, had seen a drop,” said Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, professor of economics and behavioral science at Oxford, who is one of the editors of the report. “That has pushed us for the first time to really slice and dice the data by these age groups, which we normally don’t do.” Well-being for people under 30 in the US ranks below the Dominican Republic, and is in line with countries such as Malaysia and Russia. Canada’s unhappy youth rank 58, four spots above the US. Meanwhile, the report also found that in countries of central and Eastern Europe, younger people are much happier than old people. But these countries have also seen the largest increases in happiness, for all ages. This year, Finland remained on top of the list, and was followed by Denmark, Iceland and Sweden. The lowest happiness scores were registered in war-ravaged Afghanistan. 28. What is the US’s new place based on the overall score? A. 10. B. 20. C. 23. D. 60. 29. Which country stands first on the list for people over 60? A. Lithuania. B. Denmark. C. Malaysia. D. Finland. 30. What did the researchers do about the data? A. They grouped the detailed facts. B. They rearranged the information in detail. C. They removed the information about ages. D. They analyzed the specific facts in age groups. 31. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. US well-being drops due to unhappy youth. B. Global well-being index sees significant falls. C. UN International Day of Happiness is celebrated. D. Happiness levels are greatly affected by the elderly. 28. C 29. B 30. D 31. Whether or not current levels of irrigation are sustainable, and whether additional irrigation is possible, irrigation clearly depends strongly on the availability of water supplies. Based on these factors, the company Responsive Drip Irrigation (RDI) created a new type of technology, GrowStream. This is a new irrigation system that communicates directly with plants to understand their needs, delivering water when the plant interacts with the system. When plants need water, they release root exudates (分泌物) to engage in “dialogue” with microbes (微生物) found in soil. RDI takes advantage of this finding by using these substances to turn irrigation systems on and off. GrowStream’s tubes feature tiny holes made of chemical material that can accept those root exudates indicating when the tiny holes need to open and release water. As plants drink enough water, they stop releasing those substances and this tells the micropores to close the system. The water continuously streams through the tubes but is only released when the plants actually need it. This system can also be used to deliver useful substances directly to the root of the plants with the same innovative sensor system. In drought-stricken areas, this technology has the potential to increase crop yields, improve food security, save enormous amounts of water and reduce energy consumption. According to the Fast Company report, RDI says that it saves 45-50 percent more water than regular drip irrigation, another small-tubed system that is widely applied in countries that are facing severe drought. Besides, there’s no electricity or controllers to program. It’s simple to build and maintain the system. The company already has many projects in place around the globe, addressing the threat of drought in farms. GrowStream is more than a technology, related Jan Gould, CEO of RDI, as the company’s number one goal is to create awareness of earth’s limited natural resources and people’s responsibility to care for it in a new way. 32. What is the first paragraph mainly about? A. How to manage water sources. B. What to do about plants’ needs. C. Why to come up with GrowStream. D. When to keep water supplies available. 33. What can be learned from Paragraph 2 about the new system? A. It can turn microbes into soil. B. It can operate all by itself. C. It can produce enough drinking water. D. It can protect plants against exudates. 34 What may be the author’s attitude towards GrowStream? A. Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Uncertain. D. Supportive. 35. Which could be the best title for the text? A. An Irrigation System That Can “Talk” with Plants B. The Significance of Developing Natural Resources C. The Challenges of Confirming the Global Food Security D. A Responsible Company That Can Take a Lead in Agriculture 【答案】32. C 33. B 34. D 35. 第一段前两句“Considering irrigation’s importance for global food production and food security and for the quality and quantity of water resources, effective irrigation (灌溉) water management is a global priority. Whether or not current levels of irrigation are sustainable, and whether additional irrigation is possible, irrigation clearly depends strongly on the availability of water supplies.(考虑到灌溉对全球粮食生产和粮食安全以及水资源的质量和数量的重要性,有效的灌溉水管理是全球优先事项。无论目前的灌溉水平是否可持续,以及是否有可能增加灌溉,灌溉显然在很大程度上取决于供水的可用性)”首先点明了灌溉的重要性,以及影响灌溉的因素。接着后两句“Based on these factors, the company Responsive Drip Irrigation(RDI) created a new type of technology, GrowStream. This is a new irrigation system that communicates directly with plants to understand their needs, delivering water when the plant interacts with the system.(基于这些因素,Responsive Drip(RDI)公司创造了一种新型技术GrowStream。这是一种新的灌溉系统,可以直接与植物沟通,了解它们的需求,并在植物与系统相互作用时输送水)”引出了RDI创造的GrowStream新型灌溉技术。由此可推测出,本段主要讲述了GrowStream被创造的原因。故选C。 【33题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“GrowStream’s tubes feature tiny holes made of chemical material that can accept those root exudates indicating when the tiny holes need to open and release water. As plants drink enough water, they stop releasing those substances and this tells the micropores to close the system.(GrowStream的管道具有由化学材料制成的小孔,可以接受这些根系分泌物,这些分泌物指示何时需要打开小孔并释放水分。当植物喝足够的水时,它们停止释放这些物质,这告诉微孔关闭系统)”可知,GrowStream的管道有化学材料制成的小孔,这些小孔能够接受根系分泌物进入,而这些分泌物会指示何时打开小孔并释放水分,以及何时关闭小孔。由此可推测出,这个系统可以自动运行。故选B。 【34题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“In drought-stricken areas, this technology has the potential to increase crop yields, improve food security, save enormous amounts of water and reduce energy consumption.(在干旱地区,这项技术有可能提高作物产量,改善粮食安全,节省大量的水和减少能源消耗)”可知,作者评价说这项技术有利于提高作物产量,改善粮食安全,节省大量的水和减少能源消耗,由此可推测出,他对这项技术持支持(supportive)态度。 通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Based on these factors, the company Responsive Drip Irrigation(RDI) created a new type of technology, GrowStream. This is a new irrigation system that communicates directly with plants to understand their needs, delivering water when the plant interacts with the system.(基于这些因素,Responsive Drip(RDI)公司创造了一种新型技术GrowStream。这是一种新的灌溉系统,可以直接与植物沟通,了解它们的需求,并在植物与系统相互作用时输送水)”可知,本文主要介绍了一种新型灌溉技术GrowStream,它可以直接与植物沟通,了解它们的需求,并在植物与系统相互作用时输送水。由此可推测出,A项“一种可以与植物“对话”的灌溉系统”符合题意。故选A。 Five Ways to Stay Fit Over the Holidays The holiday season is here. My parents and I lived in a small house in Brighton, Colorado, where we had a big yard. We moved there on my third birthday. My first memory was our neighbor Arlene handing me strawberries from her garden through a hole in the chain-link fence. She and her husband, Bill, lived next door. Arlene spent a lot of time working in the garden, and I was always talking to her from our yard. I was a chatter-box. I think what drew me to Arlene and Rill is that they never got tired of listening to me gab (闲聊). I also think Arlene saw a lot of herself in me-we were both lonely, anxious-and that may be why she always took the time to listen to me. Bill too. It was a wonderful connection. One day, my parents asked Bill and Arlene whether they’d watch me while they went out on a date. This worked well for everyone, so it became a somewhat monthly thing. In fact, Arlene and Bill didn’t have kids. They had a spare room in their house, which became “my room”. I had a cabinet and boxes of toys and books in that room. Arlene and I would do crafts together. Bill taught me how to ride a bike and later how to drive the lawn tractor and eventually a car. He was always fixing something in his garage. I would wander over to talk to him, and he would always stop and listen to me, just like Arlene did. When I was about five, I had an idea. My parents were watching TV when I spit it out: “What if I accepted Bill and Arlene as my grandparents?” My parents said I could go over and ask them by myself. Paragraph 1 The next day, I got up early, ready to visit Bill and Arlene first. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 Over the years, Bill and Arlene supported me in all my dreams. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 The next day, I got up early, ready to visit Bill and Arlene first. With a bouquet of wildflowers I had picked from our yard, I skipped over to their house, determined to make my feelings known. As I approached the door, I took a deep breath and knocked. Arlene answered with a warm smile, her eyes twinkling in anticipation. “Good morning, sweetheart! What brings you by so early?” I handed her the flowers and, with a quiver in my voice, began to explain my idea. “Arlene, Bill...I was wondering if you’d be my grandparents. I love you both so much, and I feel like you’re already like family to me.” Over the years, Bill and Arlene supported me in all my dreams. They never hesitated to encourage my passions, whether it was building forts in their backyard, exploring the local nature trails, or even when I announced my intention to become a writer. Arlene would read my stories aloud, her voice filled with emotion, and offer constructive feedback that helped me grow as a writer. Bill, on the other hand, would share his own life experiences and lessons learned, inspiring me to strive for excellence in everything I did. As I grew older and faced challenges, they were always there with open arms and wise words of advice. 词汇激活 行为类 ①靠近:approach/get close to ②回答:answer/reply ③充满:be filled with /be full of 情绪类 ①有益的:constructive/rewarding ②明智:wise/advisable 【点睛】[高分句型1] As I approached the door, I took a deep breath and knocked. She would be that teacher. So, in 1997, at the age of just 13, she founded a school in the courtyard of her home, free to all. Children were to be treated with love and respect; beatings were not allowed. Her parents were not in a position to help her. So at 13, she learned to do embroidery (刺绣). That was the first income she started generating to support her cause. She would work 8 hours a day, teach her students 4 hours and teach herself 4 hours. She never went back to any institution. She would prepare for exams, take her exam fee to the institution and get a degree. That’s how she got two master’s degrees, in political science and history. She would take the little children in her lap and she would teach them that way. When a teacher shows such affection to the children, they feel protected, they feel like they are not far from home, they are just with another mother. She wanted teachers to be like that. She wanted children to be pampered and have a good childhood. They are like rose petals (花瓣), and we should treat them like that. And now, selected from over 7,000 nominations from 130 countries, Sister Zeph has been awarded the largest annual global prize for teachers, the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2023,S1 million. “Her contribution to education has touched countless lives and earned her numerous awards, recognizing her as a true change-maker and advocate for women’s rights and children’s education around the world,” said the official citation. C Happiness is a relative concept but an annual index (指数) that tracks it in countries around the world has found that the United States is falling in overall well-being because younger people are feeling less and less happy. A US well-being drops due to unhappy youth. B. Global well-being index sees significant falls. C. UN International Day of Happiness is celebrated. D. Happiness levels are greatly affected by the elderly. D Considering irrigation’s importance for global food production and food security and for the quality and quantity of water resources, effective irrigation (灌溉) water management is a global priority. 34. What may be the author’s attitude towards GrowStream? A. Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Uncertain. D. Supportive. 35. Which could be the best title for the text? A. An Irrigation System That Can “Talk” with Plants B. The Significance of Developing Natural Resources C. The Challenges of Confirming the Global Food Security D. A Responsible Company That Can Take a Lead in Agriculture Five Ways to Stay Fit Over the Holidays The holiday season is here. So my mom was almost like a single mother. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $This dessert is delicious, but i'm so full from dinner.
