One morning, Charile Latuske woke up feverish in his home in Surrey in the UK, leaving him unable to function and in need of a doctor. He’d had a sore throat (咽喉痛) for a few days, believing it would get better, but that morning in August 2017, he knew that he had to do something about it.
“I was quite out of it,” said 27-year-old Latuske, who was also due to go on vacation with his wife in just three days.
Short on time, he feared the idea of calling his local physician only to wait days or even a week for an appointment, or to wait in a long line for an emergency appointment. “I just needed to be seen without messing around with long lines of people.” he said. When you’re that ill, that’s the last thing you want to do.
These days, this solution is some what easier, thanks to the Internet.
Latuske’s wife showed him a private medical app with which he could see a doctor within the hour virtually. For a fee of £30, he could sign up, share his symptoms (症状)and videocall a doctor in the UK using the digital health provider Push Doctor. The app is one of many now available in the UK and worldwide to help people in need of medical attention who are unable to get to a doctor for various reasons.
“I was highly skeptical,”he said, adding that he didn’t trust such a service and questioned the credentials (资格) of doctors available through it. “But I was in great need of a doctor.”
Within 20 minutes, he was speaking with a doctor, who soon diagnosed him with tonsillitis
Within the hour, he was at his nearest pharmacy (药房), collecting medicines. And three days later, he was on vacation, as planned.
“I was impressed by the efficiency of the whole thing,” he said.
4. What was Latuske’s concern about seeing a doctor?
A. He had to do a checkup.
B. He would have a long wait.
C. He had to cancel his travel plans.
D. He needed to spend lots of money.
5. What did Latuske’s wife do to help him?
A. She gave him some money.
B. She offered him encouragement.
C. She took him to a nearby hospital.
D. She recommended a medical app to him.
6. What does the underlined world “skeptical” in Paragraph 6 mean?
A Excited. B. Thankful.
C. Doubtful. D. Annoyed.
7. What can we learn about the new way Latuske saw a doctor?
A. It was highly efficient.
B. It cost a small sum of money.
C. It needed some improvement.
D. It was less useful than expected.
C
Blood may be thicker than water when it comes to human relationships and it seems that the same is true of jackdaws (寒鸦) after scientists found they readily change friends to gain food but stick with family even at the risk of going hungry.
Alex Thornton, a professor of leaning ability development, said, “We kept track of hundreds of wild jackdaws, each of which was equipped with a small chip. In this experiment we divided jackdaws into two groups-A or B-and programmed a pair of computer-controlled devices (装置) to provide worms. Only if individuals from the same group (AA or BB) visited together, will they get the worms.” If birds from different groups arrived together-A with B-the feeders would remain closed. Single birds would get seeds (种子), but not the worms that they preferred.
Thornton said, “We wanted to find out if jackdaws could build new relations with new partners. They might have friends in the wrong group. Do jackdaws leave them and start to hang out with individuals who are in the right group? The jackdaws turned out to be very smart, quickly learning to give up friends from the wrong group to get the best food. However, they acted differently when it came to their close relations even if they got nothing.”
Thornton said jackdaws were an excellent subject matter as they were clever and had energetic social networks. “You’ve got individuals coming and going far beyond their strong relationships, and they have lots of other company. They are similar to human society.” Michael Kings, of the University of Exeter, said, “These results help our understanding of the development of intelligence as they show that being able to track and remember information about social partners can bring them good.”
8. Which of the following do jackdaws value most according to the experiment?
A. Their family. B. Their friends.
C. Staying away from risks. D. Avoiding going hungry.
9. What can be learned about the jackdaws in the experiment?
A. Jackdaws from different groups got seeds. B. Jackdaws on their own got the worms.
C. Jackdaws with their family got nothing. D. Jackdaws from the same group got worms
10. How did the scientists carry out the search?
A. By making jackdaws behave like humans with chips.
B. By tracking the behavior of wild jackdaws when finding food.
C. By surveying how the two groups of jackdaws getting along.
D. By comparing different behaviors between humans and jackdaws.
11. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To explain the significance of the research. B. To provide possible reasons for the results.
C. To suggest application of the research findings. D. To point out the possible problem in the research.
D
When young, my parents took me to a zoo. I remember looking in admiration at two bears in a cage. Things have changed. My kids would be afraid to see animals in cages. Today, we expect animals to be held in more natural environment, and for zoos to do more to make the world a better place.
Zoos can host great conservation (保护) work. Sometimes they hold and protect endangered animals. About 40 seriously endangered animal species exist mainly in zoos. They are used for study, to start reproducing (繁殖) programs and even to reintroduce the animals to the wild. But not many zoos do enough of this. I support the recommendation of some researchers that zoos should spend at least 10% of their money on biodiversity (生物多样性) conservation. Sadly, a 1999 study showed an average spending of only 0.1%.
If zoos totally concentrate on protection, we might expect them to mostly house threatened species. But many zoos focus on the big animals that draw audiences to make money. I say that’s inappropriate I don’t mean zoos shouldn’t be a business. Since care of animals can be extremely expensive, it’s reasonable for zoos to open their doors to earn some money, as long as animals are kept in acceptable conditions.
Visiting animals in real life helps develop an appreciation for the natural world. Virtual-reality (VR) glasses and movies about wildlife are worthwhile, but not the same. A friend of mine who works in the Amazon puts it this way: “To love the forest, you need to smell the forest.”
Conservation should come first for all zoos, together with education and research. Without that, a zoo becomes just a business: one that the world would be better off without.
12. How did the author feel when seeing two bears in a cage in his childhood?
A. He was scared of the scene. B. He felt worried about his safety.
C. He felt sad about the caged bears. D. He was amazed by the wonder of animals.
13. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Protecting endangered animals properly.
B. Keeping animals in more natural conditions.
C. Holding non-threatened species in much greater numbers.
D. Spending part of their money on biodiversity conservation.
14. What does the author’s friend imply in his words?
A. VR helps zoos to make money.
B. Animals should live in the wild.
C. VR enables viewers to know more about wildlife.
D. Visiting animals in real life is a necessary experience.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Zoos need to be changed. B. Zoos should be not allowed.
C. Zoos shouldn’t be a business. D. Animals shouldn’t be kept in zoos.

Many kids find math difficult or boring. That feeling needs to go extinct as soon as possible as math is a pillar (支柱) of education. Beyond numbers, math pushes kids to think critically and become problem solvers. ___16___? Let’s find out!
Change how you talk about math to kids
When you hear the word “math” come up, put on a wide smile on your face. Our kids feed off our energy. Let’s be clear, we aren’t trying to make math cool. ___17___. This goes double for those struggling with math.

___19___
Does your child love sports? Math helps them keep track of their performance and improve. Figure out a way to take the current math they are working on in school and then apply it to something they like. This may take some homework on your part, but it will pay off in no time!
Go along with math games
Let’s not try to force math homework to be fun, rather find a teaching aid that puts math in a new light. With advancement in technology, math games have become designed to teach entire lessons and concepts rather than simple problems like the games of days past. ___20___
A. Listen to the outer voice
B. Connect math to kids’ interests
C. What is your learning approach to math

I grew up in a small town. The primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me.
One lunch-time when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had helped me remember my lines so hard. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (旁白的)part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤蔓)was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions(蒲公英)in the grass in bunch, as if a painter had touched our landscape with gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds, ” she said, “pulling it up by its roots. From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden. ”
“But I like dandelions, ”I protested, “All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions. ”
My mother looked at me seriously. ”Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?“She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. ”And that is true of people too, "she added, “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that. ”Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
“But you will be a good narrator, ”she said.

B He would have a long wait.
A. Excited. B. Thankful.
C. Doubtful. D. Annoyed.
7. What can we learn about the new way Latuske saw a doctor?
A. It was highly efficient.
B. It cost a small sum of money.
C. It needed some improvement.
D. It was less useful than expected.
B 5. D 6. C 7. A
根据第三段中的“Short on time, he feared the idea of calling his local physician only to wait days or even a week for an apointment, or to wait in a long line for an emergency appointment.(由于时间紧迫,他害怕给当地的医生打电话,等待几天甚至一周才能预约,或者排很长的队等待紧急预约)”及Latuske所说的“I just needed to be seen without messing around with long lines of people.(我只是想让别人注意到我,而不是和排长队的人瞎混)”可知,Latuske很发愁看医生,因为他需要等几天甚至一周才能预约上医生。
根据第五段中的“Latuske’s wife showed him a private medical app with which he could see a doctor within the hour virtually.(拉图斯克的妻子向他展示了一个私人医疗应用程序,他可以在一个小时内看到在线医生)”可知,Latuske的妻子给他推荐了一款私人医疗应用程序。
根据第六段中的“he didn’t trust such a service and questioned the credentials of doctors available through it.(并补充说他不相信这样的服务,并质疑通过该服务获得的医生的资质)”及Latuske所说的“But I was in great need of a doctor.(但是我非常需要一位医生)”可知,起初,Latuske并不依赖妻子推荐的那款应用程序。
根据倒数第三段“Within 20 minutes, he was speaking with a doctor, who soon diagnosed him with tonsillitis.(不到20分钟,他就和医生谈了起来,医生很快诊断出他得了扁桃体炎)”及倒数第二段中的“Within the hour, he was at his nearest pharmacy (药房), collecting medicines.(不到一个小时,他就去了最近的药店取药)”及最后一段中的Latuske所说的“I was impressed by the efficiency of the whole thing(整个项目的效率给我留下了深刻的印象)”可知,通过妻子推荐的医疗应用程序,Latuske很快就弄清楚了自己的病情,并且买到了药。 故选A项。

A 9. D 10. B 11. A

根据最后一段“These results help our understanding of the development of intelligence as they show that being able to track and remember information about social partners can bring them good.(这些结果有助于我们理解智力的发展,因为它们表明,能够跟踪和记住社会伙伴的信息对他们有好处)”可知,该段的目的是解释研究的意义。故选A。
【答案】12 D 13. A 14. D 15. A

根据第一段“I remember looking in admiration at two bears in a cage.(我记得我赞叹地看着笼子里的两只熊)”可知,作者看到被关在笼子里的两只熊时表现出了惊讶。
根据第二段“Zoos can host great conservation (保护) work. Sometimes they hold and protect endangered animals.(动物园可以进行大量的保护工作。有时他们会保护濒临灭绝的动物)”以及“I support the recommendation of some researchers that zoos should spend at least 10% of their money on biodiversity (生物多样性) conservation. Sadly, a 1999 study showed an average spending of only 0.1%.(我支持一些研究人员的建议,即动物园应该将至少10%的资金用于生物多样性保护。遗憾的是,1999年的一项研究显示,平均支出仅为0.1%)”可知,动物园会保护动物,但是做得还不够。故this指的是在合理保护濒危动物方面,动物园做得不够。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Virtual-reality (VR) glasses and movies about wildlife are worthwhile, but not the same. A friend of mine who works in the Amazon puts it this way: “To love the forest, you need to smell the forest.”(虚拟现实眼镜和关于野生动物的电影是值得的,但不是一回事。我的一个在亚马逊工作的朋友是这样说的:“要爱森林,你需要闻到森林的味道。”)”可推知,作者朋友的话表示身临其境去观看在大自然中生活的动物是有必要的。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Conservation should come first for all zoos, together with education and research. Without that, a zoo becomes just a business: one that the world would be better off without.(所有动物园都应该把保护放在首位,同时还要进行教育和研究。如果没有这些,动物园就会变成一种商业:没有这种商业,世界会变得更好)”以及通读全文可知,作者呼吁动物园做出改变,把动物保护放在首位并辅以教育和科研。A选项“动物园需要做出改变”最符合文章标题。故选A。

Integrate (融合) math into daily life
___18___. You can do this at home, during grocery shopping or even at a restaurant. Getting kids a quick math practice session when they aren’t expecting it makes them think on their feet and put things they’ve learned into practice. They get a moment to shine and you get an opportunity to praise them for showing what they learned.
D. But how do we help kids build math confidence
E. A simple everyday event can turn into a math problem
F. Your kids will explore a different world while playing math games
G. Instead, we are trying to make math a positive part of a child’s education
D 17. G 18. E 19. B 20. F

前文“That feeling needs to go extinct as soon as possible as math is a pillar (支柱) of education. Beyond numbers, math pushes kids to think critically and become problem solvers. (这种感觉需要尽快消失,因为数学是教育的支柱。除了数字,数学还能促使孩子们批判性地思考,成为问题的解决者)”指出数学非常重要,后文“Let’s find out! (让我们一探究竟吧)”发出对某事一探究竟的倡议,空处是一个问句,应该和如何学好数学相关。因此D项“But how do we help kids build math confidence (但是我们如何帮助孩子建立对数学的信心呢)”符合语境,承上启下。故选D。
前文“When you hear the word “math” come up, put on a wide smile on your face. Our kids feed off our energy. Let’s be clear, we aren’t trying to make math cool. (当你听到“数学”这个词出现时,请在脸上露出灿烂的笑容。我们的孩子以我们的能量为源泉。让我们明确一点,我们并不是想让数学变得很冷酷)”建议以微笑的方式对待数学被提起,而非让数学变得很冷酷,后文“This goes double for those struggling with math. (对于那些数学不好的人来说更是如此)”进一步指出这样做的用处,空处应该首先指出这样做的用处,因此G项“Instead, we are trying to make math a positive part of a child’s education (相反,我们正在努力使数学成为孩子教育中积极的一部分)”符合语境,承上启下,其中的positive和前文的smile呼应。故选G。
本段小标题“Integrate (融合) math into daily life (将数学融入日常生活)”建议把数学融入日常生活,后文“You can do this at home, during grocery shopping or even at a restaurant. (你可以在家里、在杂货店购物时甚至在餐馆里做这件事)”介绍做某件事的场所,空处作为段首句,应该呼应标题,与日常中的数学问题相关,因此E项“A simple everyday event can turn into a math problem (一个简单的日常事件可以变成一个数学问题)”符合语境,引出后文内容,后文的this指代选项内容。故选E。
【19题详解】
后文“Does your child love sports? Math helps them keep track of their performance and improve. Figure out a way to take the current math they are working on in school and then apply it to something they like. This may take some homework on your part, but it will pay off in no time!
前文“With advancement in technology, math games have become designed to teach entire lessons and concepts rather than simple problems like the games of days past.

注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

After the play, I took home the dandelion.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“But you will be a beautiful narrator, ” she said. She encouraged and comforted me as always as she did. My beloved mother, wearing a shining smile, added, “The narrator’s part is important, too. ” Thanks to her encouragement, I began to accept the narrator part was of vital significance. How time flew! Then came the performance day. At first I was still nervous, but it was at that very moment that I found a dandelion in my pocket. I knew my mom passed the flower to me, which meant to be in company with me.
After the play, I took home the dandelion. Upon seeing me and the dandelion, my mother’s eyes lit up with a mixture of delight and fulfillment. “I’ve made it! Thank you for your encouragement.” I exclaimed. We hugged each other excitedly. Then she tenderly took the dandelion from me, as if she were holding a precious treasure. At that moment, I felt loved and appreciated for whom I was. We all had our own unique beauty and worth just like the sorry-looking dandelion. It was my mother’s comfort and encouragement that shaped my perspective.
