Unit4 Body language. 单元过关检测 第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分35分) 第一节(共10小题:每小题2.5分,满分25分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A There are various ways in which to read body language so that you can understand how someone is feeling. Reading emotional clues (线索) is one of them. Crying is considered to be caused by an explosion of emotion in most cultures. Often crying is considered as a sign of sadness, but crying can also be an expression of happiness. Crying can also come about through laughter and humour. Thus, when judging crying, you'll need to look for other signs to determine the meaning of the crying. Crying can also be forced in order to gain sympathy or to cheat others. This practice is known as "crocodile tears', an expression that draws on the wrong idea that crocodiles"cry" when catching prey (猎物). Signs of threat include v-shaped eyebrows, wide eyes, and an open or down-turned mouth. In a similar way, arms tightly crossed over the chest is a common sign that the person is angry and is closing himself off to you. When people show anxiety, they display increased facial movements, with their mouth made into a thin line. Individuals who are anxious may also play with their hands, unable to keep them in one spot. Anxiety can also be conveyed when people seemingly unconsciously(无意识地)tap their feet or have nervous legs. Embarrassment can be expressed by turning the eyes or shifting them away, turning of the head and controlled or even tense smiles. If someone looks down at the floor a lot, they are probably shy, afraid, or embarrassed. People also tend to look down when they are upset, or trying to hide something emotional. People are often thinking and feeling unpleasant when they are in the process of staring at the ground. There are also some signs of pride. People show pride by displaying a small smile, holding their head backwards, and putting their hands on their hips. ( )1. In what situation may one have "crocodile tears"? A. When he is sad. B. The day before she took her last breath I decided to ask her. First I wanted to make sure she could comprehend what I was saying. I told her I loved her, and she raised her eyebrows in acknowledgement. Then I shared a funny story about a conversation my sister and I had. The corners of her mouth turned up in a smile. I could tell that she was taking in every word. And then I went for it. "Mum, can I ask you a serious question?" She turned her head and opened her eyes fully. I could tell she wanted to grasp every word that came out of my mouth. "Mum, do you see any of our dead relatives in the room? Do you see your dad?" She shook her head. "Do you see your mum?" She shook her head again. "Do you see Dad?" Her response was quite different this time. She began nodding her head. "Is he here in this room right now?" She nodded. "Can he see me?" She nodded again. Then she tried to communicate with words, but she couldn't get the words out. The next morning she died peacefully. A few weeks ago, I was wondering why I haven't had many dreams of my mum since she died. That night I had one of the clearest dreams I've had for a long time. Mum was dressed beautifully. She stared at me with a huge smile. Her eyes were bright and full of life. She was happier than I had seen her in years. And she was younger. We didn't exchange any words, but it was clear that she was happy and free. I woke up with joy in my heart. ( )5. Why did the author do the things mentioned in Paragraph 2? A. To review the past happy days with her mother. B. To make her mother happy during her last days. C. To check if her mother could understand her. D. To show that she has a deep love for her mother. ( )6. What was the author's mother like on the last day before her death? A. She had no sense of hearing at all. B. She couldn't move except her eyes. C. She could still speak in an unclear voice. D. She could communicate with her body language. ( )7. What did the author dream that night? A. Her mother talked with her. B . Her mother was in high spirits. C. Her mother's eyes seemed dull. D. Her mother looked older than ever. C The mysterious science of reading gestures is explained using practical explanations and clear images. Gestures are products of both genetic (遗传的) and environmental influences. Understanding our gestures is not as difficult as some people would have you believe. All human beings use them and so actually have a "built-in" ability to recognise and read it. Fingers crossed Generally this means "wishing for good luck or fortune". Another explanation could be seen as "here's hoping". The gesture probably has Christian origins where the gesture was believed to get away from evil. As such, people believe that crossing the fingers when telling a lie somehow gets away from the evil of the lie. Some historians believe that crossing your fingers is a hidden or secret way of making the Christian sign of the cross a perfect way of defeating evils. As a gesture it has both good and bad meanings. Luck or lies. Waving the first finger Mothers and teachers are common users with this hand gesture. In general, it is used to warn a single person. It is a change of the "you" gesture. If translated into language it would say "Stop whatever you are doing and pay attention to me. I am your superior and I am warning you!" Classed as a "silent" parent to child gesture, it is not completely allowed in an formal occasion where it will be explained as rude. Some psychologists believe that it has a meaning of the whip. ( )8. What can we infer from the first paragraph? A. Reading gestures is secret. B. Gestures are formed in daily life. C. Some people make reading gestures difficult on purpose. D. It is hard to explain gestures by images. ( )9. If a Christian crosses his fingers, he wants to . A. show he isn't lucky B. wish to succeed C. gets away from the evil of the lie D. cross the street ( )10. If your mum waves her first finger, she wants to . A. wish for good luck B. stop you D. help you C. praise you 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Now, if you want to be charming, then you'll need to build self-confidence, but becoming more outgoing is actually pretty easy. To get to a point at which you feel comfortable talking to a complete stranger, follow these steps. Encourage your curiosity about people. 11. I wonder what his parents look like. I wonder what her favourite colour is. Is he from around here? Is she the girl I saw at the cinema last week? It will take some conscious effort, but you can't be outgoing if you don't care about people. Smile at others. Make it a goal to smile at one person a day. It can be anybody, and it can be the most subtle (微妙的) thing of smile. A quick glance paired with a smile then run away if you want! 12. Eventually, you will want to get to a point where you smile instinctively whenever you make first eye contact with someone. Ask people questions. The standard "How are you?" doesn't really count, because people use it as a greeting rather than a real question. 13. This is where the curiosity and interest in others come into play. 14. This is key to being a good conversationalist. If you don't make enough eye contact, the other person will feel invisible and the sense that you're elsewhere mentally. If you make too much, they'll feel uncomfortable. Is that specific enough for you? Note your body language. 15. To show that you're outgoing and welcome conversations, keep your body open, your head up, and a smile on your face. Resist playing with your phone or otherwise occupying yourself. A. Master eye contact. B. Never hesitate to smile at others. C. Most of communication isn't verbal. D. The more you do it, though, the less scary it will be. E. Make eye contact when you're asking questions about people. F. Wherever you go, try to observe people, and ask questions about them. G. If you've already exchanged eye contact and smiles with someone, start off with a question 第二部分,语言运用(共两节、满分45分) 第一节 (共20题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 While high school does not generally encourage students to explore new aspects of life, college sets the stage for that exploration. Everyone did it sometimes, and when they did so they might be a little embarrassed. To eat alone might suggest that you didn't have any family or friends, or didn't like people. There was a kind of shame attached to it. Nowadays, however, there is more and more solitary(独自的)eating. People choose to eat alone for various reasons. "Foodies" - people who have a passionate interest in different cuisines (美食)-do it because all they need for their pleasure is the chance to eat good food. They don't want company or conversation, but only the joy of eating some special dish. Other people eat alone because it's simply practical for them to do so. For instance, it's estimated that nearly a third of all the customers of fast-food restaurants eat alone. They are served with their food fast, eat it fast and then leave fast because they have a meeting to make or a child to pick up from school. But for others, the appeal of eating alone is quite different. It's an experience of freedom. For the hour that it takes to have a meal, they can forget all the pressures of their lives. For a brief window, they don't have to deal with their family or job. They can relax and let their mind wander. Maybe they will bring a book, a newspaper or perhaps they will shyly spy on the people around them. Part of the appeal of this new trend is surely that a meal taken alone is like a little holiday from the busyness of modern life, in which we have so much to do all the time. David Annand, editor of US-based Condé Nast Traveler magazine, who delights in dining alone, speaks of his pleasure in the "rhythm of a meal in a restaurant its ebb and flow(人来人往), the regular arrival and departure of the waiter". This restaurant rhythm allows him and others, he writes, to sit back, observe, and think. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
