Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to ask for more information about the summer camp advertised on the website. I
am planning to participate in a two-week summer camp in the UK during the upcoming holidays
and your advertisement has caught my attention.
Could you please provide me with specific details about the summer camp, such as the starting
date, costs including fees and accommodation, and meal arrangements? Additionally, I am
particularly interested in learning more about the activities and programs offered. I would appreciate
it if you could provide me with detailed information about the available projects.
Thank you in advance for your assistance. I look forward to your prompt response.
Sincerely,

第二节(满分 15 分)
Possible version 1:
Deciding not to think about his bike temporarily, Cassius began to train. He knew that to be a
good boxer, he would need to work hard. Cassius got up extra-early every morning to run and train,
ate healthy food and even practiced his moves in the mirrors of the school bathrooms. Generally, he
became powerful and a triumph. He no longer planned to use his power to find a lost bike or defeat
a thief. He didn’t want to use his boxing skills to bully or hurt other people. He wanted to become
the best person he could be—as a boxer and as a human being!
Possible version 2:
Deciding not to think about his bike temporarily, Cassius began to train. Recognizing that to
excel as a boxer, he must devote himself to strict and thorough training. Each morning, Cassius rose
2
before dawn to run and practice his skills, adhered to a healthy diet, and even practiced his punches
in the school bathrooms’ mirrors. Gradually, he emerged as an awesome force, attaining great
success. However, he was determined no longer to utilize his power for dull tasks like locating a
lost bicycle or fighting with a thief. Neither did he want to use his boxing skills to bully or hurt other
people. He wanted to become the best person he could be—as a boxer and as a human being!
录音文稿
Text 1
W: So, we’ve agreed to go to Italy for our holiday, Jake. It might be nice to go in August.
M: Oh, it’ll be too hot then! June would be a better time to go. I can take a month off work then.
Text 2
W: Mike, why didn’t you buy a hat for your sister?
M: There were a lot of hats to choose from, but I just didn’t know which one she’d like. It was easier
to choose a scarf and the assistant showed me some matching gloves, so I got those.
Text 3
M: Why aren’t you going to the party tonight?
W: I have to help Grandma buy some clothes and then go to football practice, so I don’t have time.
Text 4
W: Oh, I wish it would stop raining!
M: Me too. The forecast says it’s going to be sunny and windy at the weekend, but the next two
days are going to be much the same as today.
Text 5
W: John, look at that woman in the red dress. She does look familiar. Did she work with you in the
past?
M: No. Maybe it’s somebody who lives near us?
W: I don’t think so. Oh, I remember. She was in the same high school as me.
Text 6
W: Jack, it’s 9:00 now. You are half an hour late for work!
M: I’m sorry. I left home at 7:30, but traffic was tied up all over the city because of the weather, and
my bus was late again.
W: It’s the third time this month that you’ve been late. It’s getting to be a bad habit with you.
M: I’ll come on time tomorrow, even if it means getting up at 7. I promise I’ll be on time for the
rest of the week.
W: I hope so. If this happens again, I’ll have to do something about it.
Text 7
W: We need to tidy the house up before the party tomorrow, Alexander.
M: Well, isn’t there anything else I can do, Carol? You know I don’t like tidying up. You’re much
better at doing it than I am.
W: Hmm. Well, I’ve already bought all the food and drink so we don’t need any shopping.
M: I suppose I could sort out the music for tomorrow.
W: That won’t take you very long. I know! Why don’t you do something really useful? I asked your
mother if we could borrow some of her plates. You could go and get them.
M: Okay, I’ll go now.
3
Text 8
W: Steve, just think, this time tomorrow evening, we’ll be on stage.
M: How are you feeling? Nervous?
W: Actually, I’m feeling OK. I think the musical is going to be a great success this year.
M: I agree with you, although we’ve made some mistakes when practicing. Do you remember when
Paul ran onto the stage at the wrong moment? That was the funniest thing of all.
W: Even Mrs. Stevens. You don’t often see her laugh. She takes her job very seriously.
M: A bit too seriously sometimes. Anyway, what about you, Anna? You seem more relaxed than last
year. You didn’t like that role, did you?
W: I didn’t want to play such an important role last year. I am in relief because I act a small part this
year.
M: And Sandra is happy to be the star of the show. In my opinion, her acting isn’t as good as yours.
W: Do you think so? Anyway, everyone’s much happier this year.
Text 9
W: Cliff! I haven’t seen you since we finished college.
M: Ann! I hardly recognized you! You’ve let your hair grow. How old are you now? Twenty-seven?
W: Yes, I am. And you’re two years younger, and you look exactly the same. What are you doing?
M: Teaching. I still live in London, teaching in a high school there. Are you teaching too?
W: No, I got married last year and had a baby recently.
M: Congratulations!
W: Thanks. So I left my job to look after the baby. My husband got a job in Cardiff, so we’ve moved
there. Do you remember Tammy? The beautiful girl from Bristol.
M: Yes. What’s she doing, looking after the children, being a housewife?
W: Never. She works full-time; she writes articles for the newspapers, very successful. She’s been
on television once or twice.
M: Have you seen any of the others?
W: One or two. Let’s go for a cup of coffee somewhere, and I’ll tell you about them.
M: Okay.
Text 10
I’m going to tell you about the Jones Memorial Library here in our town. Most of you are full-
time students — you may find you spend a lot of time here. Even those of you who are part-time
students and distance learners will no doubt require the services too. This new building has been
here for only two months, and we have not quite finished moving in the French collection. As you
can see, we are still building the new restaurant. We have finished the café, and students can use it
during the opening hours. Also, we will be adding another 100 computers shortly, so there will be
plenty for everybody very soon.
This is the main part of the library, but we also have the Rivergate building and the Fieldhouse
building. The Rivergate building houses the geography resources. The Fieldhouse building has a
collection of local history and if you want to visit it, you’ll need to go to our website to book your
place first. All our college libraries are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Now,
any questions?

Around 20 students from the University of Malta took part in a Chinese tea-tasting event on
the campus on Wednesday to add a speeial flavor to their Chinese-language course.
For most students,it was their first time to receive an expert introduction to the rich Chinese
tea culture and traditional ways of making tea, with special attention to choosing the right water
temperature for Chinese tea.
The event was hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Malta. The master of
the event was Sun Yi,a teacher at the institute. She started the event with a brief introduction to
Chinese tea culture, followed by a practical demonstration of handling the different kinds of tea
leaves. She described the central role of tea in the daily life of Chinese people and taught students
how to pronounce"drink”,"tca”and"good"in Mandarin(普通话).
"I love Chinese tea very much,"said Lexuri Vazquez,a third-year student majoring in
international relations. She said she hadn't really appreciated the difference between black and
green tea before. Thanks to the tea tasting, however, this will change, she added. She would love
to go to China one day to learn about more aspects of Chinese culture in the future.
Jackie Theuma, office administrator of the Confucius Institute at the university, said she
had tasted different kinds of Chinese tea,as the institute's director,Ji Nengwen who is a Chinese,
always shared his tea with her and other colleagues.Theuma has been working at the institute
for 11 years, and Chinese culture and language have become a part of her life.
Sun found the success of the event inspirational. The Confucius Institute holds cultural
events as part of its Chinese-language teaching program to give students an opportunity to better
understand what they learn in the classroom."I will spare no efforts to introduce more aspects
of Chinese culture through more events to students, and further raise their interest in learning
Chinese and understanding Chinese culture,"Sun said.

In looking up at the sky during these carly wecks of spring, you may see groups of birds
migrating north. But how do they fly in such an effortless and united way?
Part of the answer lies in acrodynamics(空气a动为学),reports a tcam of mathematicians in
a newly published study. The team's results show that the impact of aerodynamics depends on
the size of the flying group-benefiting small groups and disturbing large ones.
"If a bird is displaced from its position, the vortices (flow left by the leading neighbor
help to push the follower back into place and hold it there,"explains Ristroph, director of NYU's
Applied Mathematics Laboratory,"This means the birds can gather into an orderly queue with
no extra effort, since the physics does all the work."For larger groups, however, these flow
interactions cause later members to be thrown out of position, typically causing a breakdown of
the group due to crashes among members.
To re-create the flying patterns of birds,in which they line up one directly behind the other.
the researchers created mechanized wings. The wings were 3D-printed from plastic and driven
by motors to move up and down in water, which showed how air flows around bird wings during
flight.
They concluded that flow interactions between neighbors are,in effect,spring-like forces
毁
that hold each member in place-just as if the cars of a train were connected by springs.However.
棉
these"springs"act in only one direction, which means that later members may travel down the
group then crash together.
The discovery of the aerodynamic interactions of birds flying in groups broadens our
understanding of wildlife and could have applications in transportation and energy, like efficient
speeding through air or water and more effectively harvesting power from wind or waves.
蟹
28.What is the main focus of the study on birds?
A.The size of birds.
B.The effortless ways of flying.
C.The migration directions.
D.The aerodynamic influence on flying groups.
29.How do flow interactions affect larger groups of birds?
A.They improve the flying efficiency.B.They help birds in position.
C.They lead to crashes among them.
D.They unite the members.
卑
30.Why does the author mention 3D-printed wings?
A.To make a comparison.
B.To present evidence.
暴
C.To raise an issue.
D.To demonstrate a principle.
31.According to the text, what might be a possible application of the research?
A.Creating new ways of public transport.
B.Reducing air resistance of planes.
C.Bettering harvest of heat energy.
D.Expanding the usage of water.

Babies blink and cry-and a few weeks into their lives, they might smile. But do these
movements mean that newborns have conscious(有意识的)experiences of understanding the
world around them?
Based on recent studies valuing babics'brain activities and cye movements, the case for
consciousness in newborns is increasingly strong."We still don't have a final answer, but new
evidence has contributed to an increasing agreement that consciousness starts early,in
comparison with other theories that claim we need more cognitive(development for
babies to become conscious,"says Ferreira, professor of biology at the NYU School.
This new evidence for consciousness relics on methods that creatively value brain activity
in newboms.Babies can't respond to directions and sleep quite a bit, making their minds difficult
to study.Ferreira's new article discusses the new ways that scientists value whether babies are
conscious:measuring brainwave responses to unexpected sounds, using imaging to value the
brain's networks, and tracking eye movements such as blinks to see how babies react to different
stimuli(刺激).
Knowing when and how consciousness arises is really important for parents'relationships
with babies.Parents usually already believe that their babies are conscious creatures and can
experience suffering and pleasure. They try to make their babies comfortable and make sure that
they have a better environment for their development. If we have a better understanding about
babies'conscious minds,we may be able to better the way we relate to babies.
This may also be useful for baby care.Until quite recently, people thought that babies
needed more brain development to be able to feel pain. Now we know that even though the baby
brain is still developing, the feeling of pain seems to already be there
32.How did Ferreira get the new evidence?
A.By measuring babies'brain activity.B.By searching for related experience.
C.By collecting unknown sounds.
D.By comparing different pictures.
33.What is the challenge of studying consciousness in babies?
A.Behavior observation is unreliable
B.Babies can't follow researcher's directions.
C.Babies'sleep state is completely different.
D.Valuing the brain's networks is not scientific.
34.What does the underlined word "This"in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Tracking brains'networks.
B.The ways of stimulating eyes.
C.Understanding how and when consciousness appears.
D.Parents'previous belief on taking care of kids.
35.What does the author imply in the last two paragraphs?
A.Our knowledge of baby consciousness needs improvement.
B.The development of brain causes the feeling of pain.
C.A comfortable environment cannot be ignored.
D.The quality of present baby care is of low level.

Some seventy years ago,a boy called Cassius was born in the town of Louisville. He was
his parents'first child, and his mother soon noticed how strong he was! When he was just six
months old,he was sitting in her lap.He stretched out his arms and accidentally knocked one of
her teeth out!
Cassius's father was an artist and sign-writer.His mother,Odessa, was a kindly lady who
taught Cassius and his little brother,Rudolph,to be politc and truthful and hard-working.
Like his father,Cassius loved to be the center of attention and could talk so quickly that it
was hard to keep up!His mother would come home to find dozens of the neighborhood children
listening intently as Cassius told an endless stream of jokes and stories!
He was full of restless energy and didn't like to sit still. If he wasn't helping his father with
sign-writing,he would be sweeping the floors of the local library to earn money that he spent on
movies and ice cream.
Cassius always had a strong sense of what was right and what was wrong, and when he was
twelve,a theft changed his life forever. On that day,one of his friends told him that there was a
special event at the Louisville Service Club and Cassius wanted to go for a ride on the fancy new
bicycle he had received for Christmas.Cassius had a great time showing off his bike on the way
to the club.He and his friend soon arrived and went inside. However, when Cassius went out to
where he had left his beloved bike,it was gone-somebody had stolen it!
Someone told him that a police officer ran a boxing gym just across the street,so Cassius
went there to report the theft. The police officer who ran the gym was a kind old man called Joe
Martin. He helped Cassius to fill out a report about the missing bike, but also suggested that
maybe Cassius would like to try boxing,so that he could use his energy to protect himself against
thieves!
