On a bright afternoon, Jordan, Mahir and Mahir’s father gathered at the foot of a mountain. “Hey, Jordan, over here!” Jordan’s best friend, Mahir, waved his hand, pointing to a crack in the side of the mountain. “We could 21 this!”
Jordan tied his safety harness (系带) and checked his rope. He weighed one of them in his hand, determining its weight. Then he looked for 22 locations, considering the difficulty of the task. “That crack is 23 narrow. I don’t think we’d get up very high.”
“At the time of a test, a person rises or falls.” said Ghanim, Mahir’s dad. Shaking his head in 24 over the foreign proverb (谚语), Jordan examined the crack. It was nothing more than a sliver in the solid face of the cliff. He shifted in his harness as Mahir gave the proverb his own explanation: “If you’re not reaching the 25 , you’re not trying hard enough.” Jordan recognized the bit of advice from a previous climbing lesson.

One Monday morning I came into the classroom and caught Joe 61 a picture on his math book. This was one day after I had given the class a lecture on taking care of school property. Normally I would have got angry and 62 him to the office. Instead, I walked over to his desk and stood there. Joe closed the book immediately, trying to hide his drawing. I said, “Let me 63 what I said yesterday: these textbooks are going to be used for the next five years, and I 64 you to take good care of them.” “Sorry,” Joe murmured. “I forgot.” “I see.” I said.
When I returned to Joe’s desk again, he was erasing the drawing with his tiny, worn-out eraser. I 65 him mine and a drawing pad, and then said, “Here, this might make the job 66 . And you can also use the pad whenever you have the 67 to draw.” Joe looked 68 and said, “Thanks.” I nodded and started my lesson.
Joe hasn’t drawn in his textbook since. He keeps the pad in his pocket and shows me his drawing from time to time. I’m glad I didn’t ask him to go to the office that day. It might have stopped him from marking on his books, but we would never have the 69 we have today. And who knows, I may have 70 a promising Picasso.

Nathalia, from Liberty High School, was so nervous for her final scholarship interview Friday morning that she couldn’t sleep.
The 17-year-old 71 at 4 am and began preparing for whatever questions her principal, Harrison Bailey, might throw at her during the 72 for East Stroudsburg University. Nathalia left home confidently and 73 herself of the coming success. When arriving at school, she was 74 to find her family, teachers and representatives from East Stroudsburg all waiting for her. Actually, it was a surprising trick for: Nathalia. She’d already won the scholarship. “I was not expecting this at all,” Nathalia said, fighting back tears.
The scholarship — valued at about $34,000 over four years-is to pay for university and remove students’ financial 75 to higher education. Nathalia plans to major in nursing at East Stroudsburg, and she agrees that the scholarship is 76 for the first-generation college students like her. “I feel like that an unbelievable dream comes true,” her mother Diana said with tears of joy.
The epidemic has made gaining scholarship extra challenging. Nathalia 77 found a way to earn college credits by taking three online courses and in this way she has 78 herself a lot. “Nathalia is always self-motivated and I don’t have to 79 her,” Diana said.
“I want to help patients with better hospital experience. It is my 80 that pushes me on toward success.”

Outside our hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a seemingly ancient woman waited beside the door with her hand outstretched (伸出的). Every day I put my hand in hers as our eyes met. She never 81 to return my smile, my grasp, and my greeting.
On the last day of our visit, I found myself 82 on a busy corner across the street from our hotel. Bicycles and motorbikes rushed in front of me. We had been advised to walk straight through the heavy traffic without looking right or left. Let them 83 us. But tonight I was by myself and felt 84 to face the stream of vehicles. As I hesitated on the sidewalk, I felt a hand on my elbow and looked down to see the smile of my small beggar friend looking up at me. She nodded her head toward the street, indicating that she would take me across. Together, we moved slowly into the chaos.
Then we moved on towards the sidewalk, where she pulled my face down to hers, kissed me on both cheeks, and then walked away, still smiling and waving back to me. I had not given her a single coin. We had 85 something vastly more important — a warming of hearts in friendship.
Traveling in poorer nations, I have witnessed a variety of ways to deal with beggars. The most common response of tourists faced with those extremely poor people is to ignore them and focus their eyes elsewhere. I have seen people push away an outstretched hand in 86 . A few may hurriedly drop a few coins, and then make a quick getaway in hopes that another 20 ragged beggars won’t immediately appear on the 87 .
For many reasons, giving money is not the best response to an outstretched hand. The greatest gift is time and respect. To look beggars in the eye and smile, thus acknowledging their existence, is a small thing. Putting your hand into another’s outstretched hand and grasping it 88 for a moment is also a small thing. But these are important. Everyone needs 89 , to be seen as worthy of being 90 , to feel appreciated and loved. And I believe that everyone is worthy and worth knowing.

One windy spring day, I observed young people having fun flying their kites. Multicolored creations, various shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds darting and dancing. As the strong wind blew against the kites, a 91 kept them in check.
Instead of blowing away with the wind, they arose against it to achieve great 92 . They shook and pulled, but the restraining string and the cumbersome tail kept them in tow, facing upwards and against the wind. As the kites struggled and trembled against the string, they seemed to be saying, “Let me go! Let me go! I want to be 93 !” They soared beautifully even as they fought the control of the string. Finally, one of the kites 94 in breaking loose from it. Free at last, it seemed to say, “Free to fly with the wind.” Yet freedom from restraint simply put it at the 95 of the unsympathetic wind. It dropped ungracefully to the ground and landed in a mass of weeds. Free at last, free to 96 powerless, and to be blown helpless along the ground, and to lodge lifeless against the first obstruction.
97 like kites we sometimes are! Life gives us adversity(逆境), 98 and rules to follow from which we can gain strength. Restraint is a necessary opponent to the winds of opposition. We can never rise high enough to achieve our goals if we lose our necessary 99 or the rules.
Let each of us rise to great heights, 100 that some of the restraints that we may chafe under(因…而感到恼怒) are actually the steady force that helps us ascend and achieve.
