“A book is a dream that you hold in your hand,” says Neil Gaiman, a British writer. Books could change lives. April 23 marks World Book and Copyright Day. Here are some widely praised books which received unanimously (全体一致地) high scores on Douban, a major review website in China.
The Annoyance of the Gods
Author Ma Boyong, who has written The Longest Day in Chang’an, uses the classic Journey to the West as a backdrop to describe a series of workplace issues, such as how to write a work report during a project and how to respond to emergencies.
The Man in a Rush
Author Wang Jibing is a delivery man whose running routes have accumulated (累积) 150,000 kilometres, equal to running back and forth along the Great Wall of China 15 times. Like all workers from the grassroots of China, Wang records his embarrassment and the self-respect of being a worker.
Bright Night
Written by Choi Eun-young, the book is a female version of Yu Hua’s To Live. It tells the story of the friendship and struggle of four generations of women. The women in the book are no longer characters to be pitied against one another, nor do they play supporting roles in the lives of men.
Elon Musk
Elon Musk lived in South Africa as a child, where he often suffered from school bullying (霸凌), but these pains were insignificant compared to the emotional stress caused by his father. World-famous biographer Walter Isaacson uncovers the unknown story of today’s globally notable and creative entrepreneur (企业家) from close observation.

When Joy Diaz was growing up, her parents devoted (致力于) themselves to humanitarian work. The family lived in Mexico City, and although they were anything but wealthy, they still found ways to help people who were living in extreme poverty.
“When I talk about extreme poverty, what I mean is these people lived inside the garbagedump (垃圾堆),” Diaz said. Diaz’s parents did everything they could to support those living in the dump. They started by bringing in teachers and doctors. Eventually, they were able to build a health clinic (诊所), a school, a dining hall and even set up public showers. “But while that was happening, we did not have a home. We were renters,” Diaz said.
One day, years into their effort, a man showed up at Diaz’s house. His name was Jack Bloxham, and he had worked with the Diaz family in the past to provide care for community members. He’d come all the way from Richmond, Virginia. “He flew into Mexico City, hopped in a taxi, came to the house, saw my mum and just gave her this paper bag full of money, full of cash. And he said, ‘For many years, I’ ve been wanting to buy a house for you. So here’s the money, Buy a house,’” Diaz remembered.
Diaz believes this act of kindness changed her life. Her family moved into a middle class neighbourhood, and the money they saved on rent instead paid for college fee. But the impact of Bloxham’s generosity didn’t end there. “It changed the trajectory (人生轨迹) of generations,” Diaz explained. “Today my children live in a middle class neighbourhood, and because I am college educated, I am able to have a better job than I could have had before.”
Bloxham is now in his nineties. Diaz says she will always remember his kindness. “I am forever grateful, Jack. Thank you.”

Human experts spend years roasting and tasting coffee from many places to learn about the beans. They might then combine (混合) a coffee bean from Africa with another one from South America to come up with a new blend (混合). But, a coffee roasting company in Helsinki, Finland is hoping that artificial intelligence, or AI, can help ease the workload.
Kaffa Roastery recently brought out its “AI-conic” blend at the Helsinki Coffee Festival. The blend is a mixture of four kinds of beans, including Fazenda Pinhal from Brazil. It is the result of a joint project by Kaffa and Elev, a local AI business.
Svante Hampf is the founder of Kaffa Roastery. He and his partners wanted to do an experiment to see what blend the computer would produce. “We basically gave descriptions of all our coffee types and their flavours to AI and instructed it to create a new exciting blend,” Hamp f said. The “AI-conic” blend combined beans from Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia and Guatemala. It is described as “a well-balanced blend of sweetness and ripe fruit”.
Hampf said he thought the combination was “somewhat weird”. He was surprised that the AI programme chose to make the blend out of four different kinds of beans. Most humans choose only two or three beans. However, after the first blind test of the new blend, Kaffa’s coffee experts agreed that the AI-assisted blend was perfect. There was no need to change.
Elev’s Antti Merilehto said “AI-conic” is an example of “how AI can introduce new viewpoint to experienced professionals”. The International Coffee Organization says that the 5.6 million people in Finland drink the most coffee per person in the world. And the roasters at Kaffa said they hope the AI project will help to bring more things to the strong coffee culture in the country.
Hamp f called it a “first step”, adding, “I think AI has plenty to offer us in the long run. We are particularly impressed of the coffee taste descriptions it created.”
8. What is the function of Paragraph 1?
A. To point out a problem. B. To present a finding.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To call for a decision.
9. What can we learn about the “AI-conic” blend?
A. It is now in mass production. B. It comes in a variety of fruit flavours.
C. It is sweeter than other coffee. D. It combines beans from four countries.
10. What does the underlined word “weird” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Strange. B. Great. C. Ordinary. D. Strong.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. AI Robots Help Make Perfect Coffee
B. A New Coffee Blend Wins People’s Love
C. AI Tries Hand at Blending Coffee in Finland
D. AI Projects Are Widely Used in Different Fields
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. C

【10题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词下文“He was surprised that the AI programme chose to make the blend out of four different kinds of beans. Most humans choose only two or three beans. However, after the first blind test of the new blend, Kaffa’s coffee experts agreed that the AI-assisted blend was perfect.(令他惊讶的是,人工智能程序选择用四种不同的咖啡豆进行混合。
根据全文内容,结合第二段中“The blend is a mixture of four kinds of beans, including Fazenda Pinhal from Brazil. It is the result of a joint project by Kaffa and Elev, a local AI business.(这种混合物由四种咖啡豆混合而成,其中包括来自巴西的Fazenda Pinhal。这是Kaffa和当地人工智能企业Elev联合项目的成果)”和最后一段中“I think AI has plenty to offer us in the long run. Like many whales and dolphins, sperm whales are highly social animals. They communicate by squeezing(挤压) air through their respiratory(呼吸的) systems. That creates fast clicking sounds.
For years, scientists have been trying to understand what the sounds made by the whales mean, with little progress. While they still do not know, they now think the clicks make up a “phonetic alphabet(拼音字母)”that the whales use. The researchers said the whales use the sound to make what are like our words and phrases.
The study was published in Nature Communications. The researchers examined more than 8,700 recordings of sperm whale clicks, known as codas. They have found four basic elements that they believe make up a phonetic alphabet.
Pratyusha Sharma is the study’s lead researcher. She said the whales can combine the phonetic alphabet in an unlimited number of ways. “It doesn’t appear that they have a fixed set of codas,” said Sharma. “That gives the whales access to a much larger communication system,” she added.
Sperm whales have brains that weigh about nine kilogrammes. They have the biggest brains of any known animal. Females live in groups of about 10 and sometimes meet up with hundreds or thousands of other whales. Sperm whales seem to have highly developed social ties. Understanding their communication system could show similarities with human language and society.
In Dominica, there is a population of about 200 sperm whales. To get enough samples of clicks, scientists set up underwater recording equipment with microphones at different levels. Devices(设备), called tags, were placed on the whales to record what position they were in when clicking. For example, the devices gathered information on whether the whales were diving, sleeping, or breathing at the surface. The tags also recorded whether there were any other whales nearby.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature considers sperm whales “vulnerable (脆弱的)”. The whales were hunted for hundreds of years mostly for the oil contained in their large heads. The whale population is still recovering.
12. What is the study aimed at?
A. Making up a new phonetic alphabet.
B. Learning words and phrases of humans.
C. Recording the behaviour of sea animals.
D. Finding out the language of sperm whales.
13. What is the author’s attitude towards the study?
A. Concerned. B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Unclear.
14. How do the scientists collect the samples of clicks?
A. By comparing different data.
B. By going over the previous reports.
C. By observing the videos of the whales.
D. By placing underwater recording devices.
15. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A science magazine. B. A travel brochure.
C. A book review. D. A biology textbook.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. D 15. A

A. It is now in mass production. B. It comes in a variety of fruit flavours.
C. It is sweeter than other coffee. D. It combines beans from four countries.

A. Strange. B. Great. C. Ordinary. D. Strong.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. AI Robots Help Make Perfect Coffee
B. A New Coffee Blend Wins People’s Love
C. AI Tries Hand at Blending Coffee in Finland

Sperm whales have brains that weigh about nine kilogrammes They have the biggest brains of any known animal.

Her friend Bonnie, prepared ten rooms for the patients and made sure they were comfortable. After they were finished she grabbed Bonnie and said, “We deserve a break. Let’s get something to eat.”
Sitting across from each other in the noisy cafeteria, Alice noticed Bonnie’s face reflected a tired look that came from more than just a busy day. “You’re pretty quiet. Are you tired, or is something wrong?” Alice asked. Seeing the sincere concern in her friend’s face, Bonnie told the truth. “I can’t do this the rest of my life, Alice. I have to find a higher-paying job to provide for my family. If it weren’t for my parents keeping my kids, well, we wouldn’t make it.”
“Bonnie you’re so good with patients, and you love working here. Why don’t you go to school and become a nurse? There’s financial help available, and I’m sure your parents would agree to keep the kids while you are in class.”
