[安徽合肥八校2023高一联考] For people suffering from depression (抑郁症), there’s an all-natural treatment they should use—getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic risk, new research shows.
For the study, researchers analysed data from nearly 8,000 people and found that those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activities helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.
Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段时期) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activities each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”

Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.

A Girl With Stage Fright
It was obviously going to be one of those days. Students were preparing for a singing contest actively. Paul, a music teacher, made comments on the students’ performance at the end of a rehearsal (排练). A girl named Lisa did the poorest preparation. Paul was very annoyed and entirely frustrated with her performance. He didn’t recall how he closed the rehearsal, but he was sure the words he chose were not the words that would lift the girl’s spirits but rather satisfy his selfish need to punish her for the poor performance.
The moment Paul dismissed (解散) the students, Lisa, the freshman girl, made a path straight towards him. She looked him right in the eye and said, “I hate you!” Paul was taken aback and frightened by the passion and honesty in her voice. Though entirely shocked, he was somehow able to collect himself and stay calm. He looked her right in the eye and said, “Well, that’s a shame, but it’s my duty to remind you and inspire you.” She didn’t react, but rather stormed off, with her anger unchanged.

Several days later, they had a chance to speak face to face. Lisa asked if Paul remembered the time when she told him that she hated him. How could he forget? She went on to admit quite openly and honestly that it was herself, not him, who she hated. The moment got heavy and she began to tell him her fear and pressure when standing on the stage. She believed that no matter how well she prepared, she would perform terribly on the stage. Paul became aware that she had serious stage fright and also realised that maybe he had done something improper several days ago. Then he talked to her patiently and sincerely, hoping to help her build up her confidence.
