02 Period II Discovering Useful Structures—Reading for Writing Part Ⅱ 拓展阅读训练 1 A [湖南邵阳2023高一期中] Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about tea. People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from the Netherlands did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake. Tea remained scarce (稀少的) and very expensive in England until it was directly brought to Britain from China early in the 17th century. As much tea came into the country, the price fell and many people could afford to buy it. By the mid-18th century, tea had become the country’s most popular drink, tea rooms offering it as a cheaper alternative for the British. 2 Tea had been drunk without milk in it at first, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sévigné decided to see what tea would taste like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink her tea without milk. She was such a great lady that her friends thought they must copy everything she did. Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk. At first tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening. No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess (公爵夫人) found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o’clock stopped her getting “a sinking feeling” as she called it. She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so, teatime was born. 3 1.What is the purpose of the text?( ) A A.To introduce British tea culture. B.To persuade people to drink tea. C.To describe an English woman. D.To advertise English afternoon tea. 故选A项。 4 2.When did tea become a popular drink in Britain?( ) A A.When it was offered at affordable prices. B.When the British knew how to drink it. C.Before it was consumed with milk. D.After it became available in stores. As much tea came into the country, the price fell and many people could afford to buy it. By the mid-18th century, tea had become the country’s most popular drink, tea rooms offering it as a cheaper alternative for the British. 故选A项。 5 3.What do the underlined words “this habit” in paragraph 3 refer to?( ) C A.Drinking tea after dinner. B.Drinking tea with friends. C.Drinking tea with milk in it. D.Drinking tea with dessert. 6 4.What is the last paragraph mainly about?( ) B A.The history of tea in Britain. B.The birth of teatime. C.The ways of making tea. D.The habit of drinking tea. 刷阅读理解 7 熟词生义 curiosity 熟义:n.[U,单数]好奇心 生义:n.[C]奇品,珍品 刷阅读理解 8 B [全国乙2023] If you want to tell the history of the whole world, a history that does not privilege one part of humanity, you cannot do it through texts alone, because only some of the world has ever had texts, while most of the world, for most of the time, has not. Writing is one of humanity’s later achievements, and until fairly recently even many literate (有文字的) societies recorded their concerns not only in writing but in things. Ideally a history would bring together texts and objects, and some chapters of this book are able to do just that, but in many cases we simply can’t. The clearest example of this between literate and non-literate history is perhaps the first conflict, at Botany Bay, between Captain Cook’s voyage and the Australian Aboriginals. From the English side, we have scientific reports and the captain’s record of that terrible day. From the Australian side, we have only a wooden shield (盾) dropped by a man in flight after his first experience of gunshot. If we want to reconstruct what was actually going on that day, the shield must be questioned and interpreted as deeply and strictly as the written reports. 9 In addition to the problem of miscomprehension from both sides, there are victories accidentally or deliberately twisted, especially when only the victors know how to write. Those who are on the losing side often have only their things to tell their stories. The Caribbean Taino, the Australian Aboriginals, the African people of Benin and the Incas, all of whom appear in this book, can speak to us now of their past achievements most powerfully through the objects they made: a history told through things gives them back a voice. When we consider contact (联系) between literate and non-literate societies such as these, all our first-hand accounts are necessarily twisted, only one half of a dialogue. If we are to find the other half of that conversation, we have to read not just the texts, but the objects. 1.What is the first paragraph mainly about?( ) A A.How past events should be presented. B.What humanity is concerned about. C.Whether facts speak louder than words. D.Why written language is reliable. If you want to tell the history of the whole world… you cannot do it through texts alone和最后一句中的even many literate societies recorded their concerns not only in writing but in things可知,不能仅依赖文字记录的历史,因为世界上很多地方过去并没有文字;即便今天很多有文字的社会仍不仅使用文字,还使用物品来记录事情。 故选A项。 11 2.What does the author indicate by mentioning Captain Cook in paragraph 2?( ) D A.His report was scientific. B.He represented the local people. C.He ruled over Botany Bay. D.His record was one-sided. Ideally a history would bring together texts and objects和but in many cases we simply can’t以及下文From the English side… From the Australian side… 12 3.What does the underlined word “conversation” in paragraph 3 refer to?( ) B A.Problem. B.History. C.Voice. D.Society. If you want to tell the history of the whole world… you cannot do it through texts alone和第二段第一句以及画线词后的we have to read not just the texts, but the objects可知,记录历史不能只用文字,而是使文字和物品相结合,画线词所在句指出,如果我们想要解读“对话”的另一半,就要结合文字与物品。 13 4.Which of the following books is the text most likely selected from?( ) C A.How Maps Tell Stories of the World B.A Short History of Australia C.A History of the World in 100 Objects D.How Art Works Tell Stories 根据第一段中的even many literate societies recorded their concerns not only in writing but in things、第二段第一句中的Ideally a history would bring together texts and objects和最后一段最后一句可知,本文主要说明记录历史的手段不应是单一的,而应结合文字和物品。 刷阅读理解 [河南周口2023高一期末] I remember to this day the feeling of the cold wind causing my ears to hurt.
