A young woman spends her time helping people know more about saving Yangtze’s “smiling angels”. The Yangtze River is home to the endangered (濒危的) Yangtze finless porpoises (长江江豚). We know them as the “smiling angels” because of their special mouths.
However, there is little for the animal to smile about. There are only around 1,000 of the porpoises left. The government, scientists and volunteers are working hard to save them. Tan Ge is one of them.
Tan Ge was born in 1991. She grew up in Hunan’s Yueyang, a city beside Dongting Lake. The lake is linked to the Yangtze River. After learning about this important animal and the importance of protecting the animal, she joined a group of volunteers and started working to protect them.
As she worked with the volunteers, Tan Ge learned more about the animal. And she knew that perhaps a lot of people, like herself, had little knowledge of the animal. So, in 2018, she joined the association (协会) to save the animal.

The Solomons are a group of about 1,000 small islands in the South Pacific. All can see that the sea around them is getting higher. At high tide, water runs into houses and over roads. Beaches go away. Five of the Solomon Islands have disappeared under the water since 1947.
The islanders’ life becomes difficult. It’s often too hot to work in the garden during the day. Bad storms come more often. As the sea levels rise, saltwater comes out through the ground, getting into wells and killing trees and crops.
Rising water also makes the shapes of some islands become different. This happens when sea water washes away soil on one side of an island and throws new sand on the other side. If your town is on the side that’s washing away, that’s a problem.
But the people of the Solomon Islands aren’t giving up. The islanders are doing something helpful to protect homes from rising water. They’re trying to cut down fewer trees, since trees help hold onto soil. They’re growing crops in containers to keep the saltwater out, or finding crops that don’t mind salt. They’re planting trees and corals (珊瑚) to protect the coasts. They hope that by working hard, they can find a way to stay on their islands-at least for a while.

Plastic pollution in the ocean is bad for wildlife. It takes years to break it down and is difficult to clean it up. However, Dutch company RanMarine Technology found a way to make less plastic waste go into our ocean.
The WasteShark is a robot. It collects plastic waste as well as other unwanted things in rivers and near the shore (海滨) before it goes out into the ocean. Like a whale shark, the robot has a big “mouth” at its front through which waste can get inside, while water just passes through. At just under 1.6 m long and 110 cm wide, the robot can go into narrow areas of water. People can control it from 3 kilometers away—or it can follow GPS routes on its own. Moving through the water at 3 kilometers per hour, RanMarine says its WasteShark can clean up to 500 kilos of waste every day.
Collecting waste close to the shore is easier and less expensive than collecting it in the ocean. Once plastic or trash ends up in the ocean, it’s very hard to collect because it does break down, and it gets smaller and smaller.
Several WasteSharks are already being used around the world, including on the east coast of the US, the UK, India, South Korea and South Africa.
36. How long does it take to break the plastic pollution down?
A. Several years. B. Several months. C. Several days. D. Several weeks.

29. How many Solomon Islands have disappeared since 1947?

Plastic pollution in the ocean is bad for wildlife. It takes years to break it down and is difficult to clean it up. However Dutch company RanMarine Technology found a way to make less plastic waste go into our ocean.
37. What can we learn about the robot from this passage?
