[广东东莞东华高级中学2024高一月考]My mother looks just like many grandmothers. She comes from a traditional family. She was a career civil servant. In short, she didn’t do crazy stuff. That all changed a few years ago. I still remember the year when she turned 80, she surprised my brother and me with what she described as “independence”.
One day she informed us she’d booked a seven-night trip to Turkey. Alone. Because she had never been. Of course, that was ridiculous. There was no way my brother and I could allow that. A weak, little old lady wandering the streets of Istanbul on her own, not speaking a word of Turkish, with no knowledge of the laws and customs of the land—it was out of the question!

She paid no attention to us. Off she went. When she returned, she told us it had been a wonderful success. As it turned out, she had barely spent any time alone after hiring a taxi driver to show her around Istanbul for some days. He took her to all the sites—the markets, churches and restaurants. He introduced her to a blanket seller, “a lovely fellow,” and she bought some blankets. The seller took her address details and promised to ship the blankets home. The seller and my mother apparently built a friendship and she told him to drop by if he were ever in Canada. My mother beamed (眉开眼笑) as she told this story.
To our great shock, her blankets did arrive some weeks later, along with a lovely note from the seller Mustafa. To our even greater surprise, the following year Mustafa himself arrived, and called our mother to inform her of that fact.

“He came by for a cup of tea. They drink a lot of tea in Turkey,” my mother told my horrified brother and me.
Her characteristic of independence seems to be thoughtfully based on a realisation that life is to be lived. It reminded me of the line from the movie The Shawshank Redemption: “Get busy living or get busy dying.”

[黑龙江哈尔滨三中2024高一期中] Students used to be taught shop class, in which they learnt skills like woodworking. Nowadays, most schools have given up shop class in favour of academic subjects. However, the National Science Foundation STEM Guitar Project thinks that academic subjects and carpentry (木匠活) can be combined. This organisation aims to get students excited about science, maths, and the arts all at once, by teaching students how to make a guitar.
Experts forecast that technical skills like the ones used in making the guitars could be in great demand in the future. Unfortunately, many high schools don’t offer students access to mechanical design skills, due to the fact that they are not on the list of standardised subjects and the schools can’t scientifically assess students’ performance. But, is STEM really needed in order to build a guitar? Actually, it’s impossible to make a guitar without knowing science and maths.

Joshua Cruz, a design teacher, said that building a guitar also teaches troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. He thinks the STEM Guitar Project provides opportunities to challenge students to apply their own creativity to STEM problems. “I’m still figuring out how we can apply it,” Cruz explained. “I think we’re going to use a lot of the same theories behind how strings and stringed instruments work and try and get them to make stringed instruments of their own, and thus improve their academic performance.”
Because of its effectiveness and creativity, the guitar initiative (倡议) was offered the Gerhard Salinger award, which recognises outstanding STEM school programmes. “Through this project, we have become part of this community of businessmen, engineers and artisans,” said Mark French, one of the six people who received the award for his work with the STEM guitar. “It’s a great group and I’m really pleased to be part of it. I get to combine something that I just love doing with an activity that really does make the world a little bit better place. It really does help people.”
Thanks to people like Mark French, and to the STEM Guitar Project, the world is a little bit of a better, more educated, and more musical place.
