B A Louisiana teen designed an app to help her peers work through mental health challenges and it’s now being used in over 30 schools across the country The app, called Saplings, was created by 11th grader Vaishnavi Kumbala, who attends Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies in Metairie. Her app gives teens easy strategies to overcome anxiety, loneliness and sadness, among other concerns. “A lot of mental health resources out there are designed for adults or younger kids,” Kumbala said, “I wanted to create something that was by a teen for teens.” Among the app’s features is a “boredom relief” feature which gives simple suggestions to deal with specific feelings. For anxiety, the app suggests making a list of what’s making you anxious, and for sadness, it advises to try watching your favorite TV show. Kumbala created the app in 2021 following the devastation (毁坏) of Hurricane Ida. The teen said that her school was shut down for more than a month so she used this time to watch tutorials (教程) on how to build a website. “There was definitely a rise in stress levels in my community, especially among youth,” she said, adding that teens commonly hesitate to reach out for help because of the fear of being judged. While the teen emphasizes that the app is not meant to take the place of professional help, it is available in a time of need for teens. Since creating her platform, Kumbala has partnered with more than 30 schools across the country to make Saplings available for teens. The teen continues to work with the Louisiana Health Department to make her app more widely available. “I really want to keep expanding across our country even more, and expand internationally to schools,” Kumbala said. “I’m very passionate about this.” 4. The app called Saplings was created to ______. A. entertain teens in their spare time B. make money for the Haynes Academy C. promote professional mental health services D. help teens overcome mental health challenges 5. What is paragraph 5 intended for? A. Providing details about Kumbala’s school. B. Describing the app’s functions and features. C. Explaining the motivation behind the creation. D. Showing the popularity of the app among teens. 6. Which of the following can best describe Kumbala? A. Helpful and faithful. B. Creative and ambitious. C. Intelligent and quiet. D. Determined and generous. 7. What is the best title for the text? A. Saplings: An App for Excellent School Performance B. Mental Challenges Faced by Teens in School C. A Teen’s Mission: Improving Teen Mental Health D. The Devastation of Hurricane Ida: A Teen’s Response C In the digital age, screen use has become an unavoidable part of family life. A recent study explored the links between parenting strategies and screen use among young teenagers. The study looked at data from more than 10,000 12- and 13-year-olds and their parents, who were asked about their screen-use habits, including texting, social media, video chatting, watching videos and browsing the Internet. The researchers also asked whether their screen use was problematic—for example, whether kids wanted to quit using screens but felt they couldn’t or whether their screen habits affected school work or daily life. One key finding is that one of the biggest predictors of how much time kids spend on screens—and whether that use is problematic—is how much parents themselves use their screens when they are around their kids. “It’s really important to role-model screen behaviors for your children,” says Jason Nagata, lead author of the study, which appears in the journal Pediatric Research. “Even if teens say that they don’t get influenced by their parents, the data does show that, actually, parents are a bigger influence than they may think.” It’s very common for parents like myself to feel guilty about their own screen use, says Jenny Radesky, a developmental behavioral pediatrician and media researcher at the University of Michigan. But instead of beating ourselves up about it, she says, it’s important for parents to realize that just like kids, we too are vulnerable (易受伤害的) to the draws of technology that is deliberately designed to keep us using screens. “We have been asked to parent around an increasingly complex digital ecosystem that’s actively working against our limit-setting”—for ourselves and our kids, she says. But even if parents are fighting against bigger forces designed to keep us glued to screens, that doesn’t mean we are completely helpless. Nagata’s research looked at parenting strategies that worked best to limit screen use specifically among early teenagers because, he notes, this is a time when kids are seeking more independence and because we tend to see kids spending a lot more time on media once they hit their teenage years. 8. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A. The study results. B. The study process. C. The study purpose. D. The previous study. 9. What can we learn from Radesky’s words? A. Teenagers are heavily influenced by screens. B. Parents should feel guilty about their screen use. C. Technology can be addictive for both kids and parents. D Parents are helpless against the influence of technology. 10. What does the underlined word “deliberately” in paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Intentionally. B. Occasionally. C. Traditionally. D. Additionally. 11. What may be talked about in the paragraph following the text? A. The digital challenges parents are faced with. B. The strategies for parents to limit screen time. C. The negative effects of screen time on teenagers. D. The benefits of screen time for good parenting. D Researchers in Australia recently announced the launch of a new device that, they say, absorbs water from air to produce drinkable water. Researchers at the University of Newcastle call the device the Hydro Harvester. They said it can produce up to 1,000 liters of drinkable water a day, adding that it could be lifesaving during drought or emergencies. The Australian team said that unlike other atmospheric water generators, their invention works by heating air instead of cooling it. The device absorbs water from the atmosphere. Solar energy or heat from other industrial processes can be used to produce hot, wet air. After heating, the air cools, producing water for drinking or watering crops. “Hydro Harvester uses an absorbing material to absorb moisture (水分) from air. So we use renewable energy,” said Behdad Moghtaderi of the University of Newcastle’s Centre for Innovative Energy Technologies. He added, “When you condense (凝结) water contained in that air you would have the drinking water at your disposal (随时可用).” The researchers say the device can produce enough drinking water each day for a small rural town of up to 400 people. It could also help farmers keep livestock alive during droughts. Researchers thought their device would be useful because Australia’s climate is dry. “More than 2 billion people around the world, they are in a similar situation where they do not have access to high-quality water and they deal with water shortage,” Moghtaderi said. Studies of the technology will be done in several Australian communities this year. The World Economic Forum (WEF), a nonprofit group based in Switzerland, says water shortage continues to be a problem worldwide. The WEF said getting water from the atmosphere is a promising emergency solution that can immediately produce drinkable water using moisture in the air. However, the group warns that the technology is expensive. It estimates (估计) that one mid-sized device could cost between $30,000 and $50,000. 12. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about? A. The cost of the harvester. B. The design of the harvester. C. The materials used in the harvester. D. The working principle of the harvester. 13. What is Moghtaderi’s attitude towards the water harvester? A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear. 14. What is the disadvantage of the water harvester? A. It relies on costly technology. B. It consumes too much energy. C. It has limited water production. D. It requires frequent maintenance. 15. What is the author’s purpose of writing this text? A. To appeal to people to save water. B. To introduce a new water-harvesting device. C. To promote the adoption of the water harvester. D. To discuss the importance of water preservation. There was an amazing video I watched online the other day about a man playing the piano in the middle of the airport. The excitement was clear as the students worked hard to perfect every scene and every line. The play was a fantasy tale about a magical key that could unlock a hidden world. David, who was in charge of the sound effects, took his job seriously. He loved how each sound brought the story to life, making his classmates’ performances even better. He worked hard during rehearsals (排练), paying close attention to the actors and actresses as they spoke their lines, and he repeated them in his head. He also noted the action cutes (提示) carefully in order to make the right sound effect at the perfect moment. Everything was going smoothly until, just two days before the performance, David came home with bad news. “Grandad, Anthony broke his arm while practicing his bike jump on his way home.” “Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.” “He’ll make a full recovery. But by losing Anthony, we now don’t have a main character, the Key-master. Miss Tompkins says we might have to cancel the play. You know, after all that hard work, rehearsals, artwork, lights...” David and Grandad fell silent, thinking about the situation. After a few minutes, Grandad broke the silence, “I know —” he said. “Each evening that you’ve come back from rehearsals, you always recite the lines. You must know them all by now. Why don’t you play the Key-master?” “Because I can’t do it.” “How do you know unless you try? It doesn’t matter how well you do, as everyone will be on your side and cheer you on.” “Yeah. Maybe I should give it a go,” David said. The next day, David told Miss Tompkins about his idea. “Well, David, that’s fantastic!” Miss Tompkins smiled. “And I will take over sound effect responsibilities.” David practiced hard before the performance. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ At the close of the performance, Miss Tompkins took the stage to congratulate everyone. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2023-2024学年第二学期高一期末考试 英语 注意事项:1. 1. The app, called Saplings, was created by 11th grader Vaishnavi Kumbala, who attends Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies in Metairie. The teen said that her school was shut down for more than a month, so she used this time to watch tutorials (教程) on how to build a website. D. Parents are helpless against the influence of technology. 10. What does the underlined word “deliberately” in paragraph 5 probably mean? A Intentionally. B 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第二段“The study looked at data from more than 10,000 12- and 13-year-olds and their parents, who were asked about their screen-use habits, including texting, social media, video chatting, watching videos and browsing the Internet. The researchers also asked whether their screen use was problematic—for example, whether kids wanted to quit using screens but felt they couldn’t or whether their screen habits affected school work or daily life. 根据第五段中“But instead of beating ourselves up about it, she says, it’s important for parents to realize that just like kids, we too are vulnerable (易受伤害的) to the draws of technology (但她说,家长们不要为此自责,重要的是要意识到,就像孩子一样,我们也很容易受到科技的影响)”可推知,对孩子和父母来说,科技都可能让人上瘾。 故选A项。 根据最后一段中“But even if parents are fighting against bigger forces designed to keep us glued to screens, that doesn’t mean we are completely helpless. Nagata’s research looked at parenting strategies that worked best to limit screen use specifically among early teenagers (但是,即使父母正在与那些旨在让我们粘在屏幕上的更大的力量作斗争,这并不意味着我们完全无助。Nagata的研究着眼于最有效的限制屏幕使用的育儿策略,特别是在青少年早期)”可知,此处提及父母实际上并不完全无助,可以采取有效的育儿策略。由此推知,下一段可能会深入探讨这些帮助父母限制屏幕时间的策略。故选B项。 D Researchers in Australia recently announced the launch of a new device that, they say, absorbs water from air to produce drinkable water. 12. D 13. A 14. A 15. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 David practiced hard before the performance. Despite his initial self-doubts, he threw himself into learning the lines and the movements of the Key-master with a fierce determination. He spent hours in front of the mirror, rehearsing his expressions and gestures, making sure they were in sync with the character’s emotions. His classmates noticed the change and gathered around him, offering support and encouragement. They ran through the scenes together, refining the interactions between David and the other characters. The entire class felt a renewed sense of unity and purpose, working tirelessly to ensure the play’s success. At the close of the performance, Miss Tompkins took the stage to congratulate everyone. The audience broke into applause as the curtain fell, and the students cheered with pride at their achievement. David received a special round of applause for his unexpected but outstanding performance as the Key-master. Miss Tompkins praised the hard work and teamwork that had brought the play to life. As the players took their bows, they were excited to know that the experience had not only taught them about drama but also about the power of importance of community spirit. 词汇激活 行为类 ①注意:notice/spot/take notice of ②赞扬:praise/speak highly of ③知道、意识到:know/realize 情绪类 ①自我怀疑:self-doubt/self-suspicion ②兴奋的:excited/thrilled 【点睛】 [高分句型1].
