The Four Seasons, written by the Italian musician Antonio Vivaldi, was first played about 300 years ago. Since then, it has enjoyed worldwide popularity.
The great musical work includes four parts: “Spring”, “Summer”, “Autumn” and ‘‘Winter”. Each part brings to mind the season it is meant to describe. “Summer”, for example, begins slowly. Listeners can easily picture a hot, lazy summer day when nobody wants to move. When you listen to “Autumn”, a harvest (收获) celebration will readily come to mind.
But now, Hache Costa, a music director in Spain, has decided to give the old work a fresh feel. He says the climate (气候) today is very different from what it was in the 1700s. The Four Seasons would be “a lot dirtier” if it were written now.
Costa has “updated” the musical work to make it match the realities of the modern world. The ‘“updated” musical work has been played in Madrid, Spain. The performance takes place in front of a screen. As the musicians play, a video shows the effects (影响) of climate change, such as forest fires and unusually dry weather.
After enjoying it, people find the new “Summer” now sounds noisier and more powerful. Because of global warming (全球变暖), the other three seasons have become shorter. Costa says he expects people to feel “really sad” after listening to the new Four Seasons.

If life can be compared to a meal, I think the mistakes are like salt and the success is a candy.
"Hey," said the boy whose name I couldn't remember, sitting next to me. "Don't worry. Take your time." And so I did. But I still couldn't correctly pronounce my Chinese name that was given by the teacher. I was so embarrassed on my first day of learning Chinese. I was so worried that I didn't sleep well that night. I couldn't stop thinking what would happen in my Chinese class in the following days.
I took Chinese classes during my summer vacation. Every morning I walked for 25 minutes to the class while having a Chinese pancake from one of the breakfast carts (推车) on the way. Learning Spanish in school was a cushy job for me, because I could speak French and Italian which helped me with it. However, learning Chinese was difficult at first. As a boy who was born in America and grew up in America, I knew nothing about the language and had no experience of learning the language. I chose it mainly because my goal was to work and tea ch home and abroad. It is necessary for me to master different languages.
As the classes went on I slowly found that I was making connections. My 10 years of playing the piano has allowed me to perform for others. My several years of writing has led me to become a school reporter. I knew that my Chinese classes would allow me to speak Chinese well. As the teachers helped me build up the confidence, I soon began tasting the sweetness.
So what did my summer really taste like? It tasted like the Chinese food that, for the first time, I did not order in English, my mother language.

When I was in primary school, I was actually a little shy. I was really afraid of speaking in front of many people. It was my sixth-grade teacher, Mr. Bamick, who helped me get over that. That year we had to make four oral(口头的) book reports in front of the class. Some of the kids were even glad to do it, but I was afraid. Mr. Bamick realized my fear, so he told me to do a report on something that really interested me. So I did the first report on baseball.
When it was my turn to show it to the class, Mr. Bamick cut me some slack and let me read the report instead of giving it from memory. Some of my classmates laughed at me, but Mr. Bamick defended(为辩解) me. By the end of the year, I had completed all the oral book reports. It wasn't easy for me, but I did it.
Years later I realized that Mr. Bamick helped me a lot. One of the chances I got when I won a tennis match was to make a speech to the fans. It was carried live(现场直播地) and was before thousands of people. It was still not one of my favorite things to do, but with Mr. Bamick's help, I got through it. Before long, I was asked to bring my favorite childhood teacher to a national event in Dallas. I was excited when Mr. Bamick joined me for the event. It meant a lot to me that he was there.

Friends and family who ask about my job at English Salon are always interested in Just Ask! They want to know what problems Chinese teenagers face. The truth is that Chinese teenagers aren’t too different from teenagers anywhere else.
The other day, my editor asked me what kind of problems Junior 3 students would face in high school. Could I compare the letters we’ve received from junior and senior students?
I have noticed that both junior and senior students want some kind of independence from their parents. The differences? Juniors want smaller freedom, like more pocket money. One example came from a girl whose mother wouldn’t let her put posters on the wall of the bedroom. Meanwhile, seniors look for greater control over their lives. One wanted his mom to stop packing his school bags. Another wanted her mom to stop planning her schedule.
Another kind of problem is about balancing schoolwork and personal life. That shows the biggest difference. Seniors complain about tons of schoolwork and no time for fun. One writer said he wanted to go to the movies, but he felt bad for ignoring his schoolwork. Another complained that he wasted all of his free time and never fully used it. However, juniors hardly wrote about this at all.
Now, maybe you think your life will soon be joyless and awful. Maybe it will, but it doesn’t have to be. Starting in high school, your time becomes more precious (宝贵的). Decide what things are most important to you outside of school. Put them onto your schedule. Treat them seriously—even a trip to the movies! If you don’t make time for yourself, nobody else will.
8. Where does the writer work?
A. At Just Ask. B. At English Salon. C. In a movie theater.
9. The biggest difference between juniors and seniors lies in ________.
A. some kind of independence from their parents
B. balancing schoolwork and personal life
C deciding what things are most important
10. What does the underlined word “ignoring” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. 弄丢 B. 抄袭 C. 忽视
11. The passage is probably from ________.
A. a storybook B. an ad C. a magazine

Every year we have a volunteer day. On that day we can leave the office and choose to volunteer an organization. Last year, my team chose to volunteer as a group at the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) in the cancer ward(癌症病房). The RCH asked us to make Christmas cards with the kids, and generally just stay with them, whether waiting between doctor's visits or staying in their room.
With our day at the RCH coming near, many of us in the team were feeling quite nervous about what we would do when seeing the sick children. I tried to deal with the stress by baking(烘焙) the night before when we were asked to provide morning tea. Later I was feeling more confident.
We arrived at the RCH and our first job was to serve morning tea to the children and their families who were waiting to see doctors. It seemed that the biscuit or chocolate broke the icy situation! Then it was time to start making Christmas cards. We came with shiny and fun things that can get even those big kids excited.
It was surprising that our stress immediately went away. By sitting and talking with the kids, and helping them make cards, it became clear that though they were sick, they were open and glad.
To say that I didn't feel upset that day would not be honest. However, we were able to put smiles on faces. Many thanks to the nurses, doctors, parents and children at the RCH for welcoming us, and allowing us to experience the joy that kids bring.

In the fifth grade, there came my sudden fashion moment. One day, I was really feeling myself. I put on a black skirt and colorful tights (连裤袜), a yellow T-shirt with dark purple flowers. Then I added my final touch: a pair of green rain boots (雨靴).
I climbed onto the school bus, smiling and thought I was a super star. But when I got off, my friend John looked me up and down and said, "What are you wearing?" Everyone turned and looked at me, laughing. I was discouraged. To be honest, John wasn't trying to make me disappointed. He was just shocked.
But while my ego (自尊) took a minute to return, a rebellious (反叛的) voice appeared in my mind and I said, "No, I'm not showing up like everyone else."
Style has always lit me up. And through all my years, that voice has remained.
But the truth isn't about clothes. It's about a powerful need to be accepted by the world as my true self. Personal style isn't about drawing attention. It is a strong wish not to be looked at but to be taken in as a whole by others.
However, society sometimes fails to understand this. There is a saying, "To be yourself in a world that is trying to change you into something else is the greatest achievement." Wear the clothes you love and be yourself.

“I really want more people to become truly aware of (意识到) what is happening to our planet,” says Costa. “And I believe Vivaldi would not be angry with my changes.”

长郡培粹学校2023-2024学年九年级下学期第一次英语月考试题
When she was 14 years old, Remya Jose's life was turned upside down by a family crisis(危机).
Remya, who lived in a small village in India, learned that her mother was ill and her father would have to spend his time caring for her. As a result, she and her twin sister had to do most of the housework — including washing clothes. To make things even more difficult, the Jose family couldn't afford an electric washing machine. Instead, the two girls would have to do the washing all by hand in the local river, and then carefully carry everything back to their home — a task that took several hours.
Being a good student interested in engineering, Remya wanted to make a washing machine which could be used without electricity. She started studying electric washers to learn how they worked. Remya then designed(设计) a machine that used bicycle pedals(踏板) and chain. To find those items, she and her father went to a local auto shop. Workers there not only gave her the parts, they helped her make the machine!
Here's how the machine works: Remya used a cylinder(圆桶) to hold the clothes and put it in a cube(立方体). Next, she connected the bicycle pedals and the chain to the cylinder. As Remya pushed the pedals with her legs, the cylinder cleaned the clothes just like a regular washing machine.

湖南省衡阳市衡阳县2024年初中学业水平模拟考试试卷
A. a storybook B. an ad C. a magazine
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. C 11. C
【导语】本文讲述中国青少年面临的问题,讲述初中生和高中生面临的问题的不同之处。
【8题详解】细节理解题。根据“Friends and family who ask about my job at English Salon”可知,作者在英语沙龙工作。故选B。

Every year we have a volunteer day. On that day we can leave the office and choose to volunteer an organization. The RCH asked us to make Christmas cards with the kids, and generally just stay with them, whether waiting between doctor's visits or staying in their room.

2024年衡阳市成章实验中学校考
Remya's invention worked! She had created her own human-powered washing machine — and now a task that used to take several hours took only 30 minutes. Remya's washing machine was chosen from among 25,000 entries(参赛作品) as India's best innovation! She was given India's National Award and honored by the nation's former president.
The story of this young woman's creative invention spread around the world.
