Four books for young readers
What to Do When You’re Not Sure What to Do
by Davina Bell and Hilary Jean Tappaer
Lothian Children’s Books
The book serves as a guide for children experiencing unfamiliar situations. Bell’s text works together with Tapper’s drawings, showing signifieant everyday moments and challenges; in one scene a child’s hesitation before an escalator (自动扶梯) comes with the gentle encouragement, “A bigger step.”
Nothing Alike
by Zewlan Moor and Peter Cheong
Bright Light
Zewlan Moor herselfarepeatedly faced mistaken identity because she looked like anotherAsian author. In the picture book Nothing Alike, Reuben has difficulty telling the difference between Esmé and Eunwoo. Upon deeper reflection, he believes he does know enough about the girls and can differentiate them. Nothing Alike explorers stereotypes (刻板印象), providing an ideal starting point for deep conversations about appreciation, friendship and the importance of actively fighting against biases (偏见).
Family and Me!
by Michaela Dias-Hayes
Owlet Press
This bright and accessible book reminds children how their wonderful features and heritage can be lovingly passed down from biological family members. When a little mixed-race girl studies her family tree, she begins to notice where she has inherited the beautiful physical features. A sense of belonging and pride rings through in the most pure and joyful way.
Who’s Afraid of the Light?
by Anna McGregor
Scribble
Set out on a journey to the ocean's midnight zone and explore the world of biolumineseence Fergus, the main character, speaks directly to our very young readers as he tries to avoid creatures using bioluminescence. The illustrations in the picture book are similar to childhood scratch (乱画) art, featuring black spreads that reveal fluorescent (发亮的) details beneath. To add an extra touch of magic, the cover lights up in the dark.

That Saturday was significant only in hindsight It was 6 November 2010, and it was a training day for my school’s new journalism team. The teacher advised me to start a blog to get into writing. Bored and in need of a project, I set up a Blogger account at home.
As I typed post after badly written post in the months that followed, my computer was filled with the beginning of novels, half-finished song lyrics (歌词), and the odd poem — things I’d Started in k a fit of teenage enthusiasm only to be let down by my lack of creativity. But somehow writing about the news and myself seemed easier. Iloved finding just the right phrase to express my feelings.
It had, to say the least, not been a good year. I became increasingly lonely as my peers (同龄人) went to parties while my disability kept me at home after school. My carer of five years had just walked out of my life with no real explanation as to why. This threw me info front of the fact that I couldn't just ignore the reality of being disabled and hope everything would be fine. I was stuck trying to find a new way to approach life.
There were so many things I couldn’t do — or, at least, I told myself I couldn’t. But there was something that required only a computer and an idea, something that my disability couldn’t make difficult as it did to everything else: I could write. After many painful years of shyness, I found I had a voice — clear, confident and mine. It wasn’t long until my mind was made up: I was going to be a journalist.
Seven years later, I am. I’ve never been so happy that my younger self listened to the advice that turned out to matter most. Though I don’t publish much on my blog these days, I still go back to it when I have something I dcspcratcly (极度地) need to say. Because no matter how long it’s been, my blog still gives me the same thing it did on that very first day: somewhere to go, all of my own.
4. What inspired the author to start a blog?
A. A need for self-expression.
B. A suggestion from a teacher.
C. A desire to socialize with peers.
D. A requirement of a journalism club.
5. How did the author feel about his first writing attempts?
A. Happy but worried.
B. Unconfident but satisfied.
C. Upset and discouraged.
D. Indifferent and uninterested.
6. Why did the author mention his disability in the text?
A. To highlight personal struggles.
B. To discuss challenges in writing.
C. To attract readers’ careful attention.
D. To explain his growing interest in parties.
7. What feeling does the author want to express in the last paragraph?
A. Pride. B. Freedom.
C. Enthusiasm. D. Gratitude.
B 5. C 6. A 7. D
根据第一段中“The teacher advised me to start a blog to get into writing. Bored and in need of a project, I set up a Blogger account at home. (老师建议我开个博客,开始写作。无聊又需要做点什么,我在家里开了一个博客账号。)”可知,老师建议作者开博客,故选B。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“As I typed post after badly written post in the months that followed, my computer was filled with the beginning of novels, half-finished song lyrics (歌词), and the odd poem — things I’d Started in k a fit of teenage enthusiasm only to be let down by my lack of creativity. (在接下来的几个月里,我一篇接一篇写得很糟糕的文章,我的电脑里充满了小说的开头、未完成的歌词和奇怪的诗歌——这些都是我十几岁时激情迸发时开始写的,结果却因缺乏创造力而失望。)”可知,作者一开始尝试写作时,写的很糟糕,没有坚持写完,缺乏创造力,因此令人失望,故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“It had, to say the least, not been a good year. I became increasingly lonely as my peers (同龄人) went to parties while my disability kept me at home after school. My care r of five years had just walked out of my life with no real explanation as to why. This threw me info front of the fact that I couldn’t just ignore the reality of being disabled and hope everything would be fine. I was stuck trying to find a new way to approach life. (退一步说,这一年不太好。我变得越来越孤独,因为我的同龄人去参加聚会,而我的残疾让我放学后只能呆在家里。我照顾了我五年的人就这样离开了我的生活,没有任何真正的解释。这让我意识到,我不能忽视残疾的现实,希望一切都会好起来。我一直在努力寻找一种新的生活方式。)”可知,文章提到作者的残疾是为了突出作者的挣扎,故选A。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“I’ve never been so happy that my younger self listened to the advice that turned out to matter most. (年轻时的自己听从了最重要的建议,我从未如此高兴过。)”和“Because no matter how long it’s been, my blog still gives me the same thing it did on that very first day: somewhere to go, all of my own. (因为不管过了多久,我的博客仍然能给我第一天的感觉:有地方可去,完全属于我自己。)”可知,作者很高兴年轻时的自己听从了最重要的建议,博客让自己有地方可去,且完全属于自己,故作者在本段想表达感恩,故选D。
C
One of the greatest musical geniuses (天才) of our time is Itzhak Perlman — but carrying the weight of that title as a child wasn’t easy. The violinist describes his early musical education as hell, with pressure from his teacher and his parents. They required him to do as they said. When Perlman got to Juilliard School, he was shocked when he was encouraged by his new teacher to be more expressive and self-reflective. Now, in the program for young musicians that he runs with his wife Toby, he uses a similar style with his own students, encouraging each to become the best version of themselves.
It’s easy for us to regard Perlman’s early experience as a misguided approach of the past. Yet, in effect, this is exactly what we do when we label (贴标签) some as “gifted”. Whether it happens at school, at home, or elsewhere, research has proven that singling out a chosen few has negative influences on us all.
When we single out those we believe to be exceptional, we create a culture of genius. This is an environment where star performers get the most resources and where the basic belief is the fixed mindset: Some have it, and some don’t. Once you single out children as exceptional, you put them on a pedestal (受人尊敬的地位) — one they often become afraid of falling off. Additionally, those labeled as gifted tend to possess a narrow set of skills. This affects their long-term development.
In contrast, in cultures of growth, the central belief is the growth mindset — a belief in universal potential (普遍的潜能): Everyone has the ability to grow, learn, and contribute from wherever they are. In cultures of growth, everyone receives the necessary resources and instruction to develop. Cultures of growth nurture (培养) everyone based on their needs and abilities.
We all have the power to create cultures of growth in our families, schools, and workplaces by holding the belief that everyone can learn and contribute, and by supporting one another on the path to success. Because we know that it’s in cultures of growth where the real genius lies.
8. What’s Perlman’s attitude toward his new teacher’s requirement?
A. Excited. B. Surprised.
C. Stressed. D. Disappointed.
9. How does labeling individuals as “gifted” affect their development?
A. It causes a terrible fear of failure.
B. It discourages their self-expression.
C. It brings them too much self-confidence.
D It traps them into an old-fashioned mindset.
10. What is the difference between cultures of genius and cultures of growth?
A. Cultures of growth provide limited resources.
B. Cultures of growth believe in everyone’s ability.
C. Cultures of genius encourage unhealthy competition.
D. Cultures of genius focus on the increase of resources.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Competition leads to success.
B. Talent is key to achievements.
C. Labeling someone as gifted is harmful.
D. Teachers are important for one’s development.
B 9. A 10. B 11. C
根据第一段“When Perlman got to Juilliard School, he was shocked when he was encouraged by his new teacher to be more expressive and self-reflective.(当Perlman进入茱莉亚音乐学院时,他被他的新老师鼓励要更善于表达和自我反思,这让他感到震惊。)”
根据第三段“Once you single out children as exceptional, you put them on a pedestal (受人尊敬地位) — one they often become afraid of falling off.(一旦你把孩子挑出来,认为他们是杰出的,你就把他们放在了一个受人尊敬的地位上——他们常常害怕从这个位置上掉下来。)” 故选A。
根据倒数第二段“In contrast, in cultures of growth, the central belief is the growth mindset — a belief in universal potential (普遍的潜能): Everyone has the ability to grow, learn, and contribute from wherever they are.(相比之下,在成长文化中,核心信念是成长心态——一种对普遍潜能的信念:无论身在何处,每个人都有成长、学习和贡献的能力。)”
通读全文,尤其是第二段“Yet, in effect, this is exactly what we do when we label (贴标签) some as “gifted”. Whether it happens at school, at home, or elsewhere, research has proven that singling out a chosen few has negative influences on us all.(然而,实际上,当我们给一些人贴上“天才”的标签时,这正是我们所做的。无论是发生在学校、家里还是其他地方,研究已经证明,挑出少数人对我们所有人都有负面影响。)”可知,本文主要讲的是给个人贴上“天才”标签所带来的负面影响,因此本文的主旨是C选项“Labeling someone as gifted is harmful.(给别人贴上有天赋的标签是有害的。)”。故选C。
D
Organic (不使用化肥的) farmers produce food with least help from pesticides (杀虫剂), but in limiting the use of chemicals on their own land, they may be unknowingly causing an increase in pesticide use over their neighbour’s fence (栅栏).
Ashley Larsen at the University of California and her colleagues looked into land-use and pesticide data across 14,000 fields in Kern County, California. The researchers found that when organic farmland is surrounded by conventional (传统的) agriculture, neighbouring farmers seem to increase their pesticide use, with a 10% rise in organic cropland being linked to a 0.3% increase in total pesticide use on conventional fields. Most of this is driven by greater use of pesticides, the researchers found.
This may be because more insects tend to live on organic land and spill over into neighbouring fields, causing conventional farmers there to increase pesticide use, according to Larsen. The effect appears strongest when neighbouring fields are within 2.5 kilometres of the organic “focal field”.
However, the researchers noted that the presence of organic farmland is linked to a reduction in pesticide use on neighbouring organic fields, with a 10% increase in the area of nearby organic cropland being related to a 3% decrease in total pesticide use on organic focal fields. This may be because the larger area of organic farmland allows for a bigger and more stable (稳定的) community of beneficial insects.
When organic agriculture makes up a high rate of farmland — perhaps 20% or more — net pesticide use decreases no matter where the organic fields are sited, say the researchers. But when small areas of organic farmland — like in Kern County, where about 5.5% of agricultural land is organic — evenly spread through the landscape, net pesticide use may in fact be higher than when no organic farming is present.
However, this impact can be softened by bunching up organic farmland. Larsen said, “It might be worth considering how to encourage the concentration of new organic fields to basically take full advantage of its pest control benefits and limit the costs of being organic to conventional growers.
12. What’s the influence of organic farmland on neighbouring conventional fields?
A. A decrease in production. B. An increase in pesticide use.
C. A decrease in insect population. D. An increase in beneficial insects.
13. What is key to reducing total pesticide use in an area according to paragraph 4?
A. The stability and population of beneficial insects.
B. The farmers’ choice of crops to grow.
C. The location of the smallest organic farmland.
D. The population of organic farmers.
14. What does the underlined part “bunching up” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Looking into. B. Clearing away. C. Setting up. D. Joining together.
15 What is the primary focus of the researchers’ study mentioned in the text?
A. The economic impact of organic farming.
B. The environmental benefits of organic farming.
C. The relationship between organic farming and pesticide use.
D. The value of organic produce compared with the conventional.
B 13. A 14. D 15. C
根据文章第二段“The researchers found that when organic farmland is surrounded by conventional (传统的) agriculture, neighbouring farmers seem to increase their pesticide use, with a 10% rise in organic cropland being linked to a 0.3% increase in total pesticide use on conventional fields.(研究人员发现,当有机农田被传统农业所包围时,邻近的农民似乎会增加他们的农药使用量,有机农田每增加10%,传统农田的农药使用量就会增加0.3%。)”
根据文章第四段“This may be because the larger area of organic farmland allows for a bigger and more stable (稳定的) community of beneficial insects.(这可能是因为有机农田的更大面积允许有更大和更稳定的有益昆虫群落。)” 故选A。
根据划线单词下文“Larsen said, “It might be worth considering how to encourage the concentration of new organic fields to basically take full advantage of its pest control benefits and limit the costs of being organic to conventional growers.( Larsen说:“也许值得考虑的是,如何鼓励新的有机农田集中种植,以充分利用其防治害虫的好处,并限制传统种植者种植有机作物的成本。”)”可知,Larsen建议可将有机农田集中种植。由此推测,划线单词的意思和“将……聚集一起”相似。选项A“Looking into(调查)”;选项B“Clearing away (清理)”;选项C“Setting up (建立)”;选项D“Joining together (聚集)”。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Organic (不使用化肥的) farmers produce food with least help from pesticides (杀虫剂), but in limiting the use of chemicals on their own land, they may be unknowingly causing an increase in pesticide use over their neighbour’s fence (栅栏).(不使用化肥的农民在生产粮食时很少使用杀虫剂,但在限制自己土地上使用化学品的过程中,他们可能在不知不觉中导致了邻居栅栏上农药使用量的增加。)”

根据前文“Travel is one of the best ways to learn about yourself and the world. No matter how old you are and what parts of the world you decide to explore, there are always lessons to be learned.(旅行是了解自己和世界的最好方式之一。不管你多大年纪,也不管你决定去探索世界的哪个部分,总有一些东西需要你去学习)”以及后文“Here are the top reasons why traveling is important for the youth.(以下是旅行对年轻人很重要的主要原因)”可知,前文讲述不管多大年纪,旅行总能学到东西,后文确是给年轻人的建议,所以空处应是过渡句,A项“So why not travel young and get a head start?(那么,为什么不趁早旅行,抢占先机呢?)”承接上文,建议年轻时去旅行,与上文构成因果关系,符合语境;选项中“travel young and get a head start”与下文“the youth”相对应。故选A项。
根据小标题“You’ll make friends you can keep for longer(你会交到可以长久交往的朋友)”前文“When you travel young, you’ll meet many other young travelers on the way. As it’s easier to bond (联系) with people your age, you can communicate easily and form a close relationship.(当你年轻时旅行,你会在途中遇到许多其他年轻的旅行者。因为和你这个年龄的人更容易建立联系,你可以很容易地沟通,形成亲密的关系)”可知,本段主要讲述在旅行过程中容易交到以长久交往的朋友,所以G项“If you share a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience, you may become life-long friends.(如果你们分享一次千载难逢的旅行经历,你们可能会成为一辈子的朋友)”是对前文的具体举例,符合语境。选项中“life-long friends”与小标题中“friends you can keep for longer”意思一致。故选G项。
根据本段小标题“You can improve your language skills(你可以提高你的语言技能)”可知,本段主题是在旅行中可以学习新语言;E项“Learning a new language is always easier when yơu’re young.(年轻时学习一门新语言总是比较容易)”符合本段主题;下文“It opens up endless opportunities for you later in life, whether you want to study abroad or work in an international company.(它为你以后的生活打开了无限的机会,无论你是想出国留学还是在一家国际公司工作)”承接E选项,指出年轻时学的语言对以后求学、就业提供了机会。故选E项。
根据小标题“You’ll gain real-world experience(你将获得现实世界的经验)”以及后文“Instead of sitting in a classroom reading about different places and cultures, travel experiences allow you to physically ex plore a new place, see its beauty with your own eyes, and learn about history in a way that allows you to feel it in person.(与坐在教室里阅读不同的地方和文化不同,旅行经历可以让你亲身探索一个新的地方,用自己的眼睛看到它的美丽,并以一种让你亲身感受的方式了解历史)”可知,本段主要讲述旅行可以亲身探索一个新的地方,学到课本以外的、现实世界的经验;B项“There’s only so much you can learn from a textbook.(从课本上学到的东西是有限的)”符合语境,选项中“learn from a textbook”与下文中“sitting in a classroom reading about different places and cultures”相对应。故选B项。
根据前文“Traveling is fun, but it can also be challenging.(旅行很有趣,但也很有挑战性)”以及后文“Each experience you have will challenge you while teaching you how to grow and how to stand on your own feet, and that’s always best learned when you’re young.(你的每一次经历都会给你带来挑战,同时教会你如何成长,如何自立,这些都是在你年轻的时候学得最好的)”可知,本段主题为旅行很有趣,但也很有挑战性,所以F项“Travel is an opportunity for young people to learn to rise to any challenge they face.(对于年轻人来说,旅行是一个学习如何应对挑战的机会)”承上启下,指出旅行是一个让年轻人学习如何应对挑战的机会,符合语境。故选F项。

I worked at a coffee shop in a very remote (偏僻的) area. I wasn’t pleased with having to work during New Year’s Eve, but about halfway through my shift (轮班), I saw someone who made me feel grateful that I would at least be able to go home to share the dinner with my family.
It was a cold day. The weather was awful with an icy wind and near-freezing rain. Asllooked out of the store window, I saw a young man walking along the road, expecting to get free rides from the passing cars, There was very little traffic, and the few vehicles passing by were driven by people. who were rushing home and couldn’t be bothered to pick up a stranger. Iexpected the young man to come in to warm up or drink a cup, of hot coffee, but he just kept on walking even though he was trembling (颤抖) in the cold.
I thought about how it felt like to be alone and try to hitch a side (免费搭车) in such bad weather on such a special day, and my heart went out to him. Wherever he was going, it was clear that he stood no chance of making it to his destination in time for the dinner.
I was alone so I couldn’t leave the store to help out. Then I called my parents. I knew that they were busy preparing the big dinner for the whole family. I explained about the young man and asked them if they could help him out. Without any hesitation, they agreed.
After a short while, I saw my parents’ car. It stopped beside the young man and there was a quick exchange of words. The man nodded his head thankfully, and then the car drove off. I saw the look of surprise, disbelief, gratitude, and pleasure that I would never forget appeared on the face of the young man.

I really thanked my parents that day.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then, making his way to the store, the young man came in and asked if he could stay for a few minutes. And naturally I agreed. He told me “angels” had come out of nowhere and given him Thanksgiving dinner, then just driven off without telling him who they were or how they had known about him. He did not have any money to buy food, so the hot meal was especially meaningful. I just smiled, offered coffee and juice to go with the meal, and watched him enjoy them.
I really thanked my parents that day. Although they were busy with their preparations for Thanksgiving, they stopped their work, packaged dinner and brought it to the man. Sometimes, we’d be willing to help others, but we just can’t leave our work. But my parents were really glad to help the young man despite the terrible weather and their work. What’s more, the young man’s heart felt thanks made each of us feel good about our small parts in helping him.

A. Pride. B. Freedom.
C. Enthusiasm. D. Gratitude.
Once you single out children as exceptional, you put them on a pedestal (受人尊敬地位) — one they often become afraid of falling off.

15. What is the primary focus of the researchers’ study mentioned in the text?
A. The economic impact of organic farming.
B. The environmental benefits of organic farming.

I was alone, so I couldn’t leave the store to help out.
