Today I’ll talk about my career. I graduated from college last year. My parents were looking forward to the day when I would be earning my own living after graduation. Unfortunately, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted my future occupation to be. But that was before the postman delivered a magazine. I was attracted by a page that talked about the difficulties faced by deaf people and how people could help by learning sign language. It went on to say that graduates of the course usually find work in various organizations such as law companies and banks. Then I saw something that really caught my eye. Signers are also needed for sporting events and concerts. I believed I would find the perfect job. So I enrolled in the course which to my parents' delight was free of charge. The course was brilliant we were often asked to sign our favourite songs in the lessons. Sometimes we had to find a way of showing the song with a happy beat that was the hardest thing for me. Now I have got my ideal career. A Each year, TIME for Kids picks the coolest and most helpful new inventions. There was only one bed, which was given to the four old grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Bucket and little Charlie Bucket slept in the other room, upon mattresses on the floor. In the summertime, this wasn’t too bad, but in the winter, freezing cold draughts (穿堂风) blew across the floor all night long, and it was awful. Mr. Bucket was the only person in the family with a job, working in a toothpaste factory. But a toothpaste cap-screwer is never paid very much money, and there wasn’t even enough to buy proper food for all of the family. The only meals they could afford were bread for breakfast, boiled potatoes and cabbage for lunch, and cabbage soup for supper. As a growing boy, Charlie desperately wanted something more filling and satisfying than cabbage and cabbage soup. The one thing he longed for more than anything else was… CHOCOLATE. Only once a year, on his birthday, did Charlie Bucket ever get to taste a bit of chocolate. The whole family saved up their money for that special occasion, and when the great day arrived, Charlie was always presented with one small chocolate bar to eat all by himself. And each time he received it, on those marvelous birthday mornings, he would place it carefully in a small wooden box that he owned; and for the next few days, he would allow himself only to look at it, but never to touch it. Then at last, when he could stand it no longer, he would peel back a tiny bit of the paper wrapping at one corner to expose a tiny bit of chocolate, and then he would take a tiny nibble — just enough to allow the lovely sweet taste to spread out slowly over his tongue. The next day, he would take another tiny nibble, and so on, and so on. And in this way, Charlie would make his six penny bar of birthday chocolate last him for more than a month. 24. What is paragraph 1 mainly about? A. The big family. B. The freezing winter. C. The poor living conditions. D. The four old grandparents. 25. Why was Charlie desperate for chocolate? A. Because he never had it before. B. Because was greedy and selfish. C. Because he hated cabbage soup. D. Because he was always hungry. 26. Which word can replace the underlined word “nibble”? A. bite B. sniff C. piece D. bar 27. What can you infer about the family? A. They were ambitious. B. They almost starved to death. C. They liked chocolate. D. They cared about each other. C 25. D 26. A 27. 根据第一段“There was a little boy called Charlie Bucket, who lived together with his parents and four grandparents in a small wooden house on the edge of a great town. There was only one bed, which was given to the four old grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Bucket and little Charlie Bucket slept in the other room, upon mattresses on the floor. In the summertime, this wasn’t too bad, but in the winter, freezing cold draughts (穿堂风) blew across the floor all night long, and it was awful.(有一个叫查理·巴克特的小男孩,他和他的父母以及四个祖父母一起住在一个大城市边缘的一所小木屋里。家里只有一张床,是给四位年迈的爷爷奶奶的。巴克特夫妇和小查理·巴克特睡在另一个房间地板上的床垫上。在夏天,这还不算太糟,但在冬天,冰冷的穿堂风整夜在地板上吹来吹去,真是太可怕了)”可知,第一段主要讲的是生活条件差。故选C。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“As a growing boy, Charlie desperately wanted something more filling and satisfying than cabbage and cabbage soup. The one thing he longed for more than anything else was… CHOCOLATE.(作为一个成长中的男孩,查理迫切地想要比卷心菜和卷心菜汤更有饱腹感和满足感的东西。有一样东西是他最渴望的,那就是巧克力)”可知,查理那么想吃巧克力是因为他总是很饿。故选D。 【26题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“he would peel back a tiny bit of the paper wrapping at one corner to expose a tiny bit of chocolate(他会剥开一角的一小块包装纸,露出一小块巧克力)”以及后文“just enough to allow the lovely sweet taste to spread out slowly over his tongue(刚好够让那甜蜜的味道在他的舌头上慢慢扩散)”可知,划线词所在句描述了查理吃巧克力的过程,“and then he would take a tiny  nibble”指的是“然后他会咬一小口”,划线词nibble意思是“(咬下的)一口”,可用bite代替。故选A。 根据第三段“The whole family saved up their money for that special occasion, and when the great day arrived, Charlie was always presented with one small chocolate bar to eat all by himself.(全家人都为这个特殊的日子攒钱,当这个伟大的日子到来时,查理总是会得到一小块巧克力,让他自己吃)”可知,这个家庭互相关心,虽然非常穷困,但是全家一起攒钱,为了能让查理生日得到一小块巧克力。故选D。 C Every winter, Thomas Jefferson brought in more than 60 wagonloads of ice from the nearby Rivanna River to keep his ice house filled. Despite the trouble and expense of keeping it filled, Jefferson’s ice house was extremely luxurious. Most people chose to can and salt their food to preserve it. If they were determined to keep food cold, they might rely on nearby rivers and springs, cold night air or snow-packed caves to keep things cold. While Jefferson was busy keeping his ice house filled, fellow founding father Benjamin Franklin was pushing us toward the invention of the refrigerator. Working with chemist John Hadley in 1758, Franklin did an experiment successfully. By repeatedly swabbing ether (乙醚) on a thermometer (温度计) and allowing it to evaporate (蒸发) , the pair was able to drop the thermometer’s temperature to well below freezing. Another American inventor, Oliver Evans, would take the principles developed by Franklin and draw up a design for a refrigerator in 1805. Evans' first love, however, was the steam engine, so he set his plans on ice while he spent his energy developing things like a steam-powered river boat. Thankfully, however, Evans’ design didn’t go to waste. While in Philadelphia, Evans became friends with a young inventor called Jacob Perkins. Even as a teenager, Perkins displayed remarkable inventiveness. The young inventor saw the promise in Evans’ work on refrigeration, and he took Evans' design and began improving it, receiving a patent on his own design in 1834. Perkins then persuaded a man named John Hague to construct the machine, and the refrigerator was born. Created more as an experiment than something fit for commercialization, Perkins’ product certainly had room for improvement. For instance, since Freon (氟利昂) wouldn’t be invented for another century or so, early refrigerators like Perkins’ used potentially dangerous chemicals such as ether and ammonia (氨) to function. Still, his device did manage to produce a small quantity of ice by using the same fundamental principles used in modern refrigeration. Following Perkins’ success in creating a functioning fridge, other inventors moved the device rapidly toward commercialization. As for Perkins, he retired soon after inventing the refrigerator and died in 1849, never witnessing the great impact his invention had on modern life. 28. What is the purpose of the author mentioning Jefferson? A. To show the rich lived a luxurious life. B. To introduce what he wants to talk about. C. To show how famous people preserved food. D. To introduce the working principle of the refrigerator. 29. What can we know about Franklin’s experiment? A. Ether is a chemical that can give off heat rapidly. B. It tested the effects of evaporation on temperature. C. It was conducted under the leadership of John Hadley. D. The thermometer’s temperature falls when put into liquid water. 30. What can be inferred from the third paragraph? A. The refrigerator was born out of the wisdom of a group of people. B. Perkins advised John Hague to put the refrigerator into mass production. C. Perkins went on with Evans’ work in order to apply for a refrigerator patent. D. Perkins’ design provided Evans with a theoretical basis for his later invention. 31. Which of the following best describes the invention of Perkins? A. Large and ineffective. B. Expensive and unsafe. C. Clumsy and dangerous. D. Possibly unsafe but functional. B 29. B 30. A 31. 根据第二段的“While Jefferson was busy keeping his ice house filled, fellow founding father Benjamin Franklin was pushing us toward the invention of the refrigerator. (当杰斐逊忙于把他的冰窖填满时,同为美国国父的本杰明·富兰克林正在推动我们发明冰箱。)”可知,作者提到杰弗逊的目的是介绍他想谈的话题,即引出下文冰箱的发明过程。故选B。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段的“By repeatedly swabbing ether on a thermometer and allowing it to evaporate, the pair was able to drop the thermometer’s temperature to well below freezing.(通过在温度计上反复擦拭乙醚并让其蒸发,这对搭档能够将温度计的温度降至冰点以下。) ”可知,富兰克林的实验测试了蒸发对温度的影响。故选B。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段的“Another American inventor, Oliver Evans, would take the principles developed by Franklin and draw up a design for a refrigerator in 1805. Evans’ first love, however, was the steam engine, so he set his plans on ice while he spent his energy developing things like a steam-powered river boat. Thankfully, however, Evans’ design didn’t go to waste. While in Philadelphia, Evans became friends with a young inventor called Jacob Perkins. Even as a teenager, Perkins displayed remarkable inventiveness. The young inventor saw the promise in Evans’ work on refrigeration, and he took Evans’ design and began improving it, receiving a patent on his own design in 1834. Perkins then persuaded a man named John Hague to construct the machine, and the refrigerator was born.(另一位美国发明家奥利弗·埃文斯将采用富兰克林提出的原理,并于1805年设计出一种冰箱。 故选A。 根据倒数第二段的“Created more as an experiment than something fit for commercialization, Perkins’ product certainly had room for improvement. For instance, since Freon wouldn’t be invented for another century or so, early refrigerators like Perkins’ used potentially dangerous chemicals such as ether and ammonia to function. Still, his device did manage to produce a small quantity of ice by using the same fundamental principles used in modern refrigeration.(珀金斯的产品更像是一种实验,而不是适合商业化的产品,当然还有改进的空间。例如,由于氟利昂在大约一个世纪后才被发明出来,早期的冰箱,比如珀金斯的冰箱,使用了乙醚和氨等有潜在危险的化学物质来工作。尽管如此,他的装置还是成功地生产了少量的冰,使用的是与现代制冷相同的基本原理。)”可知,珀金斯发明的冰箱可能会有安全隐患,但制冰功能正常。故选D。 D Many entrepreneurs are with higher-than-average ambition. Ambitious people strongly desire achievements and are willing take more risks and spend more effort to get them. Overall, this is a positive quality, especially for people trying to build their own businesses. Apparently, if you’re more naturally driven to set goals, you are more likely to succeed. Actually, this isn’t always the case. In fact, in some cases, extreme ambition may end up doing more harm than good. One major side effect of extreme ambition is the tendency to focus too determinedly on one particular vision or end goal. This is problematic because it stops your ability to adapt to new circumstances, which is vital if you want to be a successful entrepreneur. If a new competitor emerges to threaten your business, you may need to change direction, even if that means straying from your original vision. If you have too much ambition, you’ll find this hard, if not impossible. Few people are successful when they try to build their first company. Unfortunately, for the most ambitious entrepreneurs, a failure is seen as a disaster, and impossible to recover from. It’s a clear departure from the intended plan toward the intended goal. For people with limited ambition, however, the failure is viewed as something closer to reality. Remember, the failure is common, and every failure you survive is a learning experience. Ambitious people tend to be more successful than the non-ambitious ones. However, they’re only slightly happier than the less-ambitious ones, and tend to live significantly shorter lives. This implies that even though ambitious people are more likely to achieve success, such success means nothing for their health and happiness — and if you don’t have health and happiness, what else could possibly matter? Clearly, some amount of ambition is good for your motivation. Without any ambition, you wouldn’t start your own business, set or achieve goals and get far in life. But an excess of ambition can also be dangerous, putting you at risk of burnout and even a shorter life. 32. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. Entrepreneurs are more naturally driven to success. B. Entrepreneurs’ ambition does as much good as harm. C. Ambitious people may not have more positive qualities. D. Ambitious people may not have a greater chance of success. 33. What is more important for one to become a successful entrepreneur according to the passage? A. Holding on to one’s original vision. B. Being able to adapt to new situations. C. Focusing determinedly on one particular goal. D. Avoiding radical change in one’s career direction 34. The most ambitious entrepreneurs believe failure ________. A. will awaken them to reality B. is a lesson they have to learn C. means the end of their career D. will result in a slow recovery 35. The author advises us to ________. A put health and happiness first but not material success B. follow the example of the most ambitious entrepreneurs C. avoid taking unnecessary risks when starting a business D. distinguish between conventional success and our life goal 【答案】32. A 33. B 34. C 35. 根据第一段的“Many entrepreneurs are with higher-than-average ambition. Ambitious people strongly desire achievements and are willing take more risks and spend more effort to get them.(许多企业家都有超乎常人的野心。雄心勃勃的人强烈渴望成就,愿意冒更多的风险,付出更多的努力来获得成就。)”和第二段的“Overall, this is a positive quality, especially for people trying to build their own businesses. Apparently, if you’re more naturally driven to set goals, you are more likely to succeed.(总的来说,这是一种积极的品质,尤其是对那些试图建立自己的企业的人来说。显然,如果你更自然地去设定目标,你就更有可能成功。)”可知,野心使个人强烈渴望成就,承担风险,并努力实现目标,他们更有可能成功,即企业家因为有明确的目标更自然地被驱使着走向成功,A“企业家更自然地被驱向成功”正确。故选A。 根据第四段的“One major side effect of extreme ambition is the tendency to focus too determinedly on one particular vision or end goal. This is problematic because it stops your ability to adapt to new circumstances, which is vital if you want to be a successful entrepreneur. While sitting at his office desk, working on an important assignment. he heard his phone ring. “Mom's 100th birthday,” the reminder on his phone read. “Oh, how can I forget her birthday again?” Mark shook his head as he turned the reminder alarm off. “I can't keep disappointing her like this.” He quickly finished his work and left the office without wasting another minute. On his way, he stopped at a bakery and bought his mother's favorite cheesecake. “My mother turned 100 today!” he cheered, telling the shopkeeper how happy he was. He also bought her balloons and a few gifts. Excited to see her after a decade, Mark drove towards his mother's house. Mark finally arrived at her house after driving for hours, but the house did not look the same anymore. The lights inside were all turned off, and the fence was covered in wild vines (藤) . It seemed like no one had been living in the house. Worried for his elderly mother, Mark entered the house, carefully walked towards the switchboard in the hallway and turned the switches on. A thick layer of dust had settled on the furniture. As he slowly walked towards the kitchen, a wave of regret engulfed (吞噬) him. Every corner of the house reminded him of missed opportunities to bond with his mother, listen to her stories, and learn about her feelings. “Where did she go?” he wondered. Searching for clues about his mother's whereabouts (行踪) , Mark found a dusty envelope on the kitchen counter. Curious, he opened it, pulling out a letter in his mother's handwriting. It turned out that his mother left her house a year ago because she felt lonely. She called a local retirement community and asked if she could join them. “I hope you can visit me before it's too late. I love you, my precious son! ” her letter said. As regret spread through every inch of his body, Mark quickly rushed out of the house and headed towards the retirement community. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Mom!” Mark rushed towards his mother and wrapped his arms around her. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】As regret spread through every inch of his body, Mark quickly rushed out of the house and headed towards the retirement community. Finally, Mark found his mother at a local retirement community. “Mom!” Mark rushed towards his mother and wrapped his arms around her. Mom was also extremely excited and didn’t complain at all. Mothers always love their children, so she did not want to bother her son. Mark felt ashamed but managed to celebrate his mother’s birthday with her friends at the retirement community. 24 What is paragraph 1 mainly about? C Every winter, Thomas Jefferson brought in more than 60 wagonloads of ice from the nearby Rivanna River to keep his ice house filled. C To show how famous people preserved food. D Many entrepreneurs are with higher-than-average ambition. C Ambitious people may not have more positive qualities. A. put health and happiness first but not material success B. follow the example of the most ambitious entrepreneurs C. avoid taking unnecessary risks when starting a business D. distinguish between conventional success and our life goal 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It is very difficult to maintain a health y routine while: travelling. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
