I always saw myself as an honest person. The only time I’d ever lied was to protect someone’s feelings. But that wasn’t really lying. I would tell myself that it was an act of kindness!
And then I had a therapy (治疗) period, when I realized that all of this was actually people-pleasing behaviour. Not only that, but according to my therapist, by continuously hiding my true feelings to protect those I loved, I was stopping them from ever getting to know the real me. I knew something had to change. So, from that moment, I promised I would never tell another lie again.
It was particularly hard at the start. It would take me hours to reply to a “do you like a coffee?” text when my answer was “no”. But gradually, I realized it was not impossible. Because more often than not, I’d tell the truth when I have to stop the appointment (约定) with friends, but instead of being disappointed, they would reply, “Oh, I’m delighted that you tell the truth.”
If there is any difference, by telling the truth, I was becoming closer to those I really connected with, and gently letting go of those I didn’t. Some did struggle at first because they weren’t used to my honesty. But slowly, people began to express their gratitude for my newfound honesty. I’ll never forget the first time a friend thanked me for it: “I feel so safe in our friendship because I know if I’ve upset you, you’ll just tell me!” It’s why I’m fully committed to maintaining honesty. I have no idea where it will take me, but at least I’ll always be living a life of total authenticity.
My experience inspired me to write a children’s novel about a girl who couldn’t lie. I’ve dedicated (把……献给) it to my younger self and I hope it also encourages a new generation to do what I’ve only just learned: to tell the truth.
4. The author decided to stop lying when ______.
A. she received a treatment B. she became a therapist
C. she made her friends happy D. she wanted to protect someone’s feelings
5. What made the author believe it is possible to tell the truth?
A. Her friends’ supportive responses. B. Her unique way to tell the truth.
C. Her therapist’s encouragement. D. Her trust in her friends.
6. What does the underlined word “authenticity” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Creativity. B. Humor. C. Truth. D. Greatness.
7. What does the author want the new generation to do in the last paragraph?
A. Be honest people.
B. Avoid unnecessary conversations.
C. Write books to encourage children to be happy.
D. Keep a balance between telling lies and the truth.

Most of us check social media directly before bed. But doing so may raise the possibility of having terrifying nightmares(噩梦), according to a study.
“As social media becomes increasingly important in our lives, its impact goes beyond our waking hours, and may influence our dreams,” said the study’s lead author Reza Shabahang, a professor at Flinders University in Australia.
The study included 595 Iranian adults who regularly used social media. The 595-adult group was asked to fill out a 14-question survey called the Social Media-Related Nightmare Scale (SMNS), to measure the type of nightmares and how frequently they occurred. “Participants(参与者) were requested to specifically focus on nightmares rather than general dreams,” the study said.
Results showed that the most common dream was being unable to log in(登录) to social media platforms. According to the study, those who reported using social media more frequently than others experienced media - related nightmares more often. The participants were divided into two groups — those over 27 years old and under — with the average age being 27.75 and the study found there wasn’t a significant difference between the age groups.
“Many young people are digital natives, born in the social media age and never knowing a time in which there is no social media in life,”the authors wrote in the study.
The researchers advised that people take steps to remove the temptation(诱惑) of social media including keeping their phones out of their bedrooms when they go to sleep, limiting distractions(使人分心的事物) and creating a comfortable and calming space to sleep.
More studies need to be conducted to fully understand the implications of social media use, especially as technology continues to develop. “With the rapid advances in technology and media, including artificial intelligence(AI) and virtual reality(VR), it is expected that dreams featuring technological and media content will become more frequent,” Shabahang said.
8. How was the study conducted?
A. By interviewing social media users.
B. By carrying out experiments on phone users.
C. By asking participants to finish a survey.
D. By comparing nightmares and common dreams.
9. What did the study find?
A. People under 27 years old dream every day.
B. Frequently using social media led to media-related nightmares.
C. Most participants couldn’t log in to social media platforms.
D. People over 27 years old tended to be more influenced by phones.
10. What did the researchers suggest doing?
A. Being aware of online safety. B. Going to bed as early as possible.
C. Saying no to social media forever. D. Reducing phone use before bedtime.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To persuade readers to form a good habit.
B. To discuss challenges faced by social media users.
C. To warn people of the possible disadvantages of AI.
D. To introduce a study on the effect of pre - sleep social media use.

In the summer of 2022, several researchers with USDA Wildlife Services held their breath as a drone (无人机) pilot flew a large drone, equipped with a camera, toward a wolf standing in grassland in southwestern Oregon. The team members, watching from a distance, expected the wolf to stop or run away the minute the robot approached it. But to their disbelief, it did neither. Instead, the wolf wagged (摆动) its tail, reached out its front legs, lowered its head — a classic invitation to play and exactly the opposite of the response the researchers were hoping for.
The project, led by Paul Wolf, the Southwest Oregon District’s supervisor for Wildlife Services, was designed to find ways to use drones to scare wolves away from livestock (牲畜), not give the animals a new toy.
Later that night, the researchers tried again. This time they equipped the drone with a speaker that broadcast human voices. The wolf took off running. For the rest of the summer and fall, the field staff focused on using drones to discourage wolves from approaching cattle, in one case using a speaker-equipped drone for an ongoing attack. The three wolves fled, and the wounded deer survived. “We know for sure that we saved at least one animal doing this,” says Dustin Ranglack, the Predator Ecology and Behavior Project leader for Wildlife Services’ National Wildlife Research Center.
Ranglack and other researchers hope drones will help keep the peace between predators (捕食性动物) and livestock. “Early exploration is your best way before something bad occurs,” says Jared Beaver, an assistant professor and a wildlife-management specialist at Montana State University, “before livestock get killed or before a wildlife species gets in trouble and has to be killed as well.”
But drones still face difficulties in wide application. “We’re all strongly aware of the limitations of this tool,” Ranglack says. “Drones with speakers such as the ones tested by Wildlife Services can cost $ 20,000 or more.”
12. How did the wolf react to the drone at first?
A. The wolf stood still.
B. The wolf could treat the drone as a toy.
C. The wolf immediately ran away.
D. The wolf could be frightened of the drone.
13. Why was the project carried out?
A. To explore the dangers wolves faced.
B. To study the habits of wolves by using drones.
C. To keep wolves from hurting livestock by using drones.
D. To find out the ways to use drones in environmental protection.
14. What is Beaver’s attitude to the project?
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Puzzled.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Wolves: a Possible Threat to Livestock
B. Drones: a Role to Play in Protecting Livestock
C. Technology: an Effective Way to Help Farmers
D. Dustin Ranglack: a Specialist in Grassland Research

Monday started with a mixture of excitement and anxiety for Lucy. Due to her father’s job transfer (调动), she had moved to a new city with her parents, leaving behind her old friends and familiar surroundings.
Today was her first day at her new high school, and she was determined to make a good impression. She woke up early, had breakfast, and double-checked her schedule before heading out. The bus stop was just a short walk from her house, and she felt butterflies in her stomach as she waited for the bus to arrive. Minutes later, she was sitting on the school bus alone, holding her backpack tightly. The bus ride seemed to take a long time, but finally, she arrived at the school. Lucy took a deep breath and stepped off the bus, determined to make the best of her first day.
In her classroom, she introduced herself to her teacher and found an empty seat. As the bell rang, a girl named Lily hurried into the classroom and sat down beside Lucy, giving her a quick nod. Lucy sensed a hint of annoyance in her voice and felt uneasy.
The rest of the morning went by smoothly, but Lucy couldn’t shake off (摆脱) her anxiety. During lunch, she found a quiet spot to eat alone, feeling the pressure of being the new girl. After lunch, as Lucy walked through the hallway, she accidentally bumped (撞) into Lily, who was carrying a handful of books. The books went flying, and Lily looked annoyed. Lucy apologized, feeling embarrassed, but Lily’s cold response left her feeling even more out of place.
That afternoon, Lucy headed to her PE class, where the activity for the day was long-distance running. She hoped the exercise would help clear her mind. As the run began, Lucy focused on her breathing, trying to keep pace with the others. However, halfway through the course, she tripped over an uneven (不平坦) piece of ground and fell hard in front of her classmates and the teacher. Pain shot through her knee, and her face burned with embarrassment. She wanted to disappear.

I’ve dedicated (把……献给) it to my younger self, and I hope it also encourages a new generation to do what I’ve only just learned: to tell the truth.
4. The author decided to stop lying when ______.
A. she received a treatment B. she became a therapist
C. she made her friends happy D. she wanted to protect someone’s feelings
5. What made the author believe it is possible to tell the truth?
A. Her friends’ supportive responses. B. Her unique way to tell the truth.
C. Her therapist’s encouragement. D. Her trust in her friends.
6. What does the underlined word “authenticity” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Creativity. B. Humor. C. Truth. D. Greatness.
7. What does the author want the new generation to do in the last paragraph?
A. Be honest people.
B. Avoid unnecessary conversations.
C. Write books to encourage children to be happy.
D. Keep a balance between telling lies and the truth.
【答案】4. A 5. A 6. C 7. A

The 595-adult group was asked to fill out a 14-question survey, called the Social Media-Related Nightmare Scale (SMNS), to measure the type of nightmares and how frequently they occurred. “Participants(参与者) were requested to specifically focus on nightmares rather than general dreams,” the study said.

10. What did the researchers suggest doing?
A. Being aware of online safety. B. Going to bed as early as possible.
C. Saying no to social media forever. D. Reducing phone use before bedtime.
11 What is the purpose of the text?

【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“‘Early exploration is your best way before something bad occurs,’ says Jared Beaver, an assistant professor and a wildlife-management specialist at Montana State University, ‘before livestock get killed or before a wildlife species gets in trouble and has to be killed as well.’(蒙大拿州立大学的助理教授兼野生动物管理专家Jared Beaver说:‘在糟糕的事情发生之前,在牲畜被杀死之前,或者在野生动物物种陷入困境并不得不被杀死之前,早期的探索是最好的方法。’)”可知,Jared Beaver对这个项目持支持的态度,故选C。

Next, establish a connect ion between this routine and a small, specific task related to your goal.

前文“Immediate rewards can enhance a person’s sense of motivation.
However, halfway through the course, she tripped over an uneven (不平坦的) piece of ground and fell hard in front of her classmates and the teacher. Pain shot through her knee, and her face burned with embarrassment. She wanted to disappear.

Lily gave her a smile. “Don’t worry about it,” she said gently, easing her discomfort. Then Lily left.
After the class, Lily approached Lucy and apologized to her for her earlier behavior. “I’m really sorry for being rude before,” she admitted. “I’ve also been having a rough Monday.” Lucy felt a wave of sympathy and shared her own struggles about not wanting to leaving her old friends and familiar teachers. This heartfelt exchange broke the ice between them, and they realized they had more in common than they thought. A friendship began to blossom. That Monday, which had begun with so much anxiety, turned out to be the beginning of a wonderful new chapter for Lucy, filled with friendship and new experiences.
