Little did I know that I was about to see something I would never forget. After they introduced the young musician, Mr. Patrick Henry Hughes, he was rolled onto the stage in his wheelchair and began to play the piano. His fingers danced across the keys as he made beautiful music. He then began to sing as he played, and it was even more beautiful. For some reason, however, I knew that I was seeing something special. About ten minutes into Patrick’s performance, someone came on the stage and said, “I’d like to share a seven-minute video.” Then the lights went dim. Patrick Henry Hughes was born with no eyes and a tightening of the joints, which left him disabled for life. However, as a child, he was fitted with artificial eyes and placed in a wheelchair. Before his first birthday, he discovered the piano. His mom said, “I could hit any note on the piano, and within one or two tries, he’d get it.” By his second birthday, he could play simple songs as requested. His father was excited. “We might not play baseball, but we can play music together.” Today, Patrick is a junior. His father attends classes with him and he’s made nearly all A’s. He’s also a part of the marching band. He and his father do it together. They attend all the band practices and performances. His father rolls his son around the field to the cheers of Patrick’s fans. But it was Patrick’s “attitude of gratitude” that touched my soul deeper. On stage, between songs, he talked to the audience about his life and about how blessed he was. He said, “God made me blind and unable to walk. BIG DEAL! He gave me the ability, the musical gifts I have… the great opportunity to meet new people.” When his performance was over, Patrick and his father were on the stage together. The crowd rose to their feet and cheered for over five minutes. 36. What can we know from the text? A. Patrick is now in charge of a marching band. B. His mom said, “I could hit any note on the piano, and within one or two tries, he’d get it.” By his second birthday, he could play simple songs as requested.(在他一岁生日之前,他发现了钢琴。 根据第四段中的“His father attends classes with him and he’s made nearly all A’s.(他的父亲和他一起上课,他几乎所有成绩都得A。)”和“They attend all the band practices and performances.(他们参加了所有的乐队练习和演出。)” 根据第五段中的“But it was Patrick’s “attitude of gratitude” that touched my soul deeper.(但正是Patrick的“感恩态度”更深地打动了我的灵魂。)” 故选A。 根据画线词后面的“He said, “God made me blind and unable to walk. BIG DEAL! He gave me the ability, the musical gifts I have… the great opportunity to meet new people.”(他说:“上帝让我失明,无法行走。大不了!他给了我这种能力,即我拥有的音乐天赋……这是结识新朋友的绝佳机会。”)”可知,Patrick认为虽然自己天生失明并且无法行走,但他很感激上天让自己拥有音乐天赋,这种天赋给了他结识新朋友的机会,由此可推测出,他认为自己是幸运的。blessed意为“幸运的”,与lucky意思相近。故选D。 【40题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Patrick Henry Hughes was born with no eyes and a tightening of the joints, which left him disabled for life. “We might not play baseball, but we can play music together.”(Patrick Henry Hughes出生时没有眼睛,关节僵硬,这使他终身残疾。 和第五段“But it was Patrick’s “attitude of gratitude” that touched my soul deeper. On stage, between songs, he talked to the audience about his life and about how blessed he was. He said, “God made me blind and unable to walk. BIG DEAL! He gave me the ability, the musical gifts I have… the great opportunity to meet new people.”(但正是Patrick的“感恩态度”深深打动了我的灵魂。 C Pruning (剪枝) is something that can confuse a lot of gardeners, such as when to prune plants and how to do so. There are two main schools of thought when it comes to pruning in a garden. The most common idea is that we should prune plants according to relatively strict guidelines on an annual basis, or even more frequently. The second school of thought is from Masanobu Fukuoka’s “do nothing” approach — farming involves letting nature take the controls and intervening (干涉) as little as possible. But there is, in my opinion, a much more important question, and that is whether you should prune much at all. For me, the most important thing in making this decision is how we quantify (量化) the benefit. I personally fall somewhere between the two positions outlined above. I do prune plants in my forest garden and in other parts of my property, but not as much or as often as traditional gardeners may suggest. I prune plants with the well-being of the plants in mind. I do not have a lot of time for pruning which is only to make the plants beautiful, or simply to keep things tidy. When I prune plants, I see myself as fulfilling an ecosystem service that, in the wild, animals may provide. Through pruning and other jobs, I can, like other creatures within the natural ecosystem, change things a little for my own needs, while also taking steps to safeguard the system as a whole. Finding that fine line between embracing nature and making the most of the space may mean that some pruning is required. I would always begin by removing any dead or damaged material. But when it comes to further pruning, I take a much more holistic approach. I may occasionally prune trees to let more light through to plantings below. But often, I will let things get a little wild and spend more time observing than intervening in my garden. 41. Why does the author mention two schools of thought at the beginning? A. To bring up a new topic. B. To point out gardeners’ difficult situations. C. To compare the benefits of two methods of pruning. D. To serve as the background information of the text. 42. What does the author say about pruning? A. There is too much difficulty in pruning. B. Pruning is needed but not too much. C. Pruning should be done regularly. D. There is no need to prune at all. 43. What does the author mainly consider when pruning plants? A. The beauty of the garden. B. The protection of the animals. C. The balance of the ecosystem. D. The tidiness of the environment. 44. What does the author mean by saying “I take a much more holistic approach”? A. He makes no change to plantings. B. He adopts strict guidelines offered by experts. C. He takes the whole situation into account. D. He develops various methods of improving production. 45. What is the best title of the text? A. The Problem That Confuses Many Gardeners B. My Approach to Pruning in the Garden C. Different Opinions on Pruning in the Garden D. The Balance Between the Ecosystem and Human Needs 【答案】41. D 42. B 43. C 44. C 45. 根据第一段“There are two main schools of thought when it comes to pruning in a garden. The most common idea is that we should prune plants according to relatively strict guidelines on an annual basis, or even more frequently. The second school of thought is from Masanobu Fukuoka’s “do nothing” approach — farming involves letting nature take the controls and intervening as little as possible. But there is, in my opinion, a much more important question, and that is whether you should prune much at all.”(说到修剪花园,主要有两种观点。 根据第二段最后一句“I do prune plants in my forest garden and in other parts of my property, but not as much or as often as traditional gardeners may suggest.”(我的确会在我的森林花园和我地产的其他地方修剪植物,但不像传统园丁建议的那么多或经常修剪。) 根据第三段第三四句“When I prune plants, I see myself as fulfilling an ecosystem service that, in the wild, animals may provide. Through pruning and other jobs, I can, like other creatures within the natural ecosystem, change things a little for my own needs, while also taking steps to safeguard the system as a whole.”(当我修剪植物时,我认为自己在履行一种生态系统服务,而在野外,这种服务可能是动物提供的。 根据最后一段最后三句“But when it comes to further pruning, I take a much more holistic approach. I may occasionally prune trees to let more light through to plantings below. But often, I will let things get a little wild and spend more time observing than intervening in my garden.”(但当谈到进一步修剪时,我采取了a much more holistic approach。 根据第一段最后一句“But there is, in my opinion, a much more important question, and that is whether you should prune much at all.”(但是,在我看来,有一个更重要的问题,那就是你是否应该修剪太多。)及第二段第一句“For me, the most important thing in making this decision is how we quantify the benefit.”(对我来说,做这个决定最重要的是我们如何量化收益。)及第三段第一句“I prune plants with the well-being of the plants in mind.”(我修剪植物的时候要考虑到植物的健康。)及最后一段第三句“But when it comes to further pruning, I take a much more holistic approach.”(但当谈到进一步修剪时,我采取了更全面的方法。) D Hi, it’s Zack! Greetings from Paris, everyone! This broadcast is being brought to you from one of the largest museums on Earth — the Louvre! Today we’re going to find out about some of the Louvre’s most amazing treasures. Here we go! Now, at the top of these stone stairs... get a load of that! That huge sculpture you can see is the Winged Victory Samothrace, or Nike of Samothrace! I can’t even begin to tell you how amazing this is! It looks like she has just flown down out of the sky and is standing on a ship. Her head and arms are missing, but you can imagine her holding her arms up high, celebrating the result of an ancient battle. And just look at how her dress is being folded by the wind! I really can’t believe she’s made of stone. The skill of the sculptor is just incredible. Okay, I’d better move on. You can see there are so many people here. I’m being pushed around quite a bit, in fact. And you’re really going to love what’s coming up next. It’s the one and only Mona Lisa! The painting is a lot smaller than you would expect, and is protected by glass. But from here I can get a good view to show you. When I look into her eyes it seems she has a mind of her own! One moment she seems to be laughing at me, but then again I catch a sense of sadness in her smile. I guess that’s why she attracts so many visitors every day. And now, it’s time to get up close and personal with one of history’s greatest artists — Rembrandt! He painted this self-portrait about 400 years ago. Throughout his life, he made over 90 self-portraits! No one really knows why. Perhaps it was his way of taking a 17th-century selfie? Or was it simply cheaper to paint himself than to pay for a model? About 35,000 works are currently being displayed in over 300 rooms in the Louvre, and it would take a lifetime to see everything! I’ll say bye for now, and hope you can all visit this fantastic place one day to feel the power of these great works of art for yourselves. They really do reach out to us across the centuries as if time itself were nothing. By the way, if you have enjoyed this live broadcast, subscribe to find out where I’m visiting next! 46. From Paragraph 1, we can know that Zack is ______. A. taking selfies in the Louvre B. promoting ticket sales for the museum C. making a live broadcast D. interviewing some visitors 47. Why does Zack feel amazed at the Winged Victory of Samothrace? A. Its arms and feet are missing. B. Its vivid - folds are made of stone. C. It is the largest sculpture on Earth. D. It shouldn’t be protected by glass. D. Mona Lisa has thoughts. 49. What can we learn about Rembrandt? A. Why he made so many self-portraits is a mystery. B. He lived a rich life by selling self-portraits. C. He donated many paintings to the Louvre. D. His self-portrait in the Louvre was finished in the 18th century. 50. What can we infer from the passage? A. Rembrandt is not as famous as the painter of Mona Lisa. B. In the author’s eyes, the sculptor of Winged Victory of Samothrace must have incredible skill. C. The painting Mona Lisa attracts so many people because the woman is. always laughing at others. D. The reason why Rembrandt liked drawing self-portraits is that he was too poor to pay for a model. 46. C 47. B 48. D 49. A 50. I certainly don’t. Last spring, I went there for one of my regular volunteer jobs. On arriving, I was greeted by Chuck, the director of the shelter, with a heart y recommendation, “You’ve got to see what’s in the ‘Welcome Room’ today!” I was used to seeing an unexpected lizard or parrot, but I was not prepared for a big rabbit that filled the cage. It sat quietly eating something while I watched it in surprise. I said, “It’s too huge!” Then Chuck said, “Look!” He pushed a stick through the cage and raised the rabbit’s middle part a little. Much to my surprise, a small gray kitten was lying there. “What is this?” I asked, shocked to see another living animal of a completely different species hidden peacefully under a rabbit. “It’s strange, huh?” Chuck laughed, “A man in Town Acres called yesterday afternoon, saying there was a huge rabbit in his backyard that had been sitting there for a full day, and it hadn’t moved an inch. He thought it was injured, so he and his family went out to look at it. It’s a French Lop rabbit, and she’s surely somebody’s pet. There is no doubt about it. But she still didn’t move when they got close, and when they went to pick her up, that little kitten was right underneath her—just like he is now. And when they tried to separate them, that kitten cried! It was like being separated from his mother.” “Animals are interesting, huh?” I said. “I wonder how those two got connected.” “Well, it has been shrouded in mystery,” Chuck said. “Up to now, we have not found any scientific proof,” It certainly was strange, and for the next three days, everyone at the shelter called this unusual pair The Gray Duo. I guessed they got together because both of them needed a companion (同伴) to give them love and care. 51. Why did the author go to the animal shelter? (no more than 10 words) ____________________________________________________________________________________ 52. What made the author feel so surprised? B. My friends told me the performance would be very special. C. Patrick showed a gift of music at an early age. D. Patrick played the piano much better than he sang. 37. A. taught Patrick to sing and play the piano B. accompanied him to attend classes and practices C. expected his son to be a great musician and singer D. has become the leader of the marching band 38. What made the author most impressed? A His attitude of gratitude. B. His working hard. C. His wonderful performance. D. His unlucky fate. 39. The underlined word “blessed” in Paragraph 5 might be replaced by “________”. A. unfortunate B. hopeful C. talkative D. lucky 40. The story of Patrick Henry Hughes teaches us to ________. A. share our kindness with others B. develop an interest in music C. study hard and realize our dream D. value what we have had C Pruning (剪枝) is something that can confuse a lot of gardeners, such as when to prune plants and how to do so. The Balance Between the Ecosystem and Human Needs D Hi, it’s Zack! D. It was created during an ancient battle. 48. How does Zack feel when looking at Mona Lisa? A. He is upset about not having a good view. B. He is surprised by its big size. C. D. 51 Why did the author go to the animal shelter?
