If there was a subject at school that made me nervous, it was science. Maybe that’s because in my tenth grade, I set fire to the classroom by accident while doing an experiment (实验). So, when my husband and I decided to homeschool our daughters, we made a deal: he would teach science, while I would deal with everything else. But that’s not how things have been going these past few weeks, since my husband has been too busy to teach the girls.
Recently, while out on my morning hike before starting lessons, I noticed that the sky was a beautiful blue, and the air was filled with the sweet smell of flowers. So I decided to teach the girls outside, although my daughters hadn’t had any science classes from my husband for a while.
I returned to the house to get the girls ready. We headed up into the forest, finding a place by a lake. My daughter Saoirse started to pick up flowers, while my other daughter Ula was waiting to be taught. I handed her a drawing board and colored pencils. “We wait,” I told her, “and see if something comes along. Before you find it, just draw what’s around you.”
We worked, hardly speaking. Then a bird flew across the water, and then sat in a front of a fallen tree. Ula started drawing it. An hour later, I found she drew the bird on her paper with amazing accuracy (准确性). But there was one other interesting fact about this drawing: she also drew me, sitting beside her.
I realized, as I looked at this child’s drawing of us watching a bird, science starts with a sense of wonder. It is about stepping outside our busy lives and amazing at the world around us.

It is a fact that many children have difficulty in writing. On Hoxton Street in East London there is a very special children’s writing center. In front of the center is its shop. The shop raises money for this very special program that fires children’s imagination.
Young people aged 8 to 18 come into the center through a secret(秘密的) door to open a world of opportunity( 机会) by encouraging the love for writing. The organization believes that,“Writing improves communication and can change lives.“That’s because writing allows children’s voices to be heard.”
This year, the center is celebrating 10 years of helping children start a love for writing through creative programs. The organization works with around 1,000 children every year taking part in different programs. It now has over 400 volunteers and its programs are free for the children of the nearby areas.
“Through creative writing programs, we try to help young people to develop,”said Macnab.“We help them believe in themselves, and build communication skills in both workshops for schools and out-of-school writing clubs.”
One 10-year-old boy, Nmeso, said that the weekly after-school club he attends at the center has helped him grow his imagination and improve his grades. In fact, he was able to move up a grade in school. What’s even more amazing is that Nmeso has written a story, Andre Has a Hard Time. It has already come out. This is Nemeso’s success story.

It was the evening of November 5, 2017. The square of Xichang Satellite Launch Center (西昌卫星发射中心) was as bright as the day. On the launch tower the white Long March-3 Carrier rocket stood ready for takeoff.
At 7: 45 p. m., from the loud-speaker came “Ten, nine, eight…three, two, one!” The moment the commander-in-chief (总指挥) said “Launch”, the Long March-3 carrier rose with a very loud sound straight into the air like a huge dragon. From the tail of the Long March-3 carrier you could see very large fireballs as the air itself seemed to burn. A few minutes later, the commander-in-chief said loudly, “The Beidou-3 double-satellite has been launched successfully!” Loud cheers filled the hall.
The grey-haired chief designer (总设计师), Yang Changfeng, smiled with tears in eyes. How could Yang not be excited? For ten years he had worked with the Beidou team day and night, facing countless difficulties and experiencing amazing tests.
He remembered clearly that one day in early April 2007 the first Beidou satellite he and his team had worked on for years was ready to be launched. But something was found wrong with the satellite transponder (应答机). Even worse, there were only 72 hours before we could launch the satellite according to the International Telecommunication Union.
Thinking carefully, Yang decided to take the satellite apart and send the transponder to the testing ground in Chengdu. During the 5-hour ride on the mountain road, in order to stop it from further damage (破坏), they held it in their arms like a baby. They were under too much pressure but they had no time for worries. They had to race against time.
Finally on the third day the transponder was back in working order. When the first Beidou satellite was launched, Yang and his team cried tears of joy. How unforgettable those 72 hours were!
There is still a long way to go. Drawn back to reality, Yang is now considering what next challenge is.

We worked hardly speaking.

A few minutes later, the commander-in-chief said loudly, “The Beidou-3 double-satellite has been launched successfully!” Loud cheers filled the hall.
