Here, our expert panel provides you with four different solutions for getting some rest: Neil B. Kavey, the sleep specialist. Try behavior changes and proper and regular use of medication. At night, keep away from bright light. In the morning, open the shades and go out for a walk, to tell your brain, “This is the start of the day.” You can try OTC sleep aids, but if you suffer for more than three weeks, see a doctor. Drugs are safe when used properly, and better than the consequences of sleeplessness. Gerald Lemole, the alternative source. Stress often plays a role in insomnia, so try to change your reaction to it. Don’t exercise or eat at the end of the day, and avoid or limit caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. Enjoying a warm bath can help. Also, try taking 1,000 mg of calcium (it may calm your muscles and nerves, helping you sleep). Lisa Derosimo, the nutritionist. Go to bed and get up at the same time daily. Keep your room dark and quiet, and remove distractions (no working in bed). Have a cup of herbal (药草) tea, such as chamomile (洋甘菊), to relax your body. And remember, people who eat a healthy diet of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and low-fat protein feel better and sleep better. Sandra McLanahan, the mind/body professor. Lying in bed, starting from your legs and moving up to your head, tense your muscles once at a time, then release. And try alternate-nostril (鼻孔交换的) breathing. Exhale (呼气) through one nostril, using your fingers to close the opposite nostril. Breathe in and out; then switch back and forth. Both of the ways will help you feel more relaxed, like a rubber band after it’s been stretched. 31. What does the underlined word “insomnia” mean? A. Late stay. B. Sleeplessness. C. Tiredness. D. Breath trouble. 32. Gerald Lemole thinks that . According to Lisa Derosimo, what results in a good sleep? A. Having a regular daily routine. B. Taking various medicines. C. Having a big meal before going to bed. D. Viewing an online live broadcast in bed. 34. From the passage we can infer alternate-nostril breathing is a good way to . 由文章第一段“Here, our expert panel provides you with four different solutions for getting some rest:(在这里,我们的专家小组为您提供了四种不同的休息解决方案:)”、“Neil B. Kavey, the sleep specialist.”下文中的“ You can try OTC sleep aids, but if you suffer for more than three weeks, see a doctor. Some misguided people believe they have a natural duty to help you to be a better person by telling you what a failure you really are first and then offering suggestions as to how you can improve. So what is the solution to criticism? If you are the one forcing others to feel ashamed of themselves, STOP. Make a conscious decision that rather than focus on the negative aspect of a person’s performance or attitudes, you’ll offer helpful suggestions from the beginning. If I’m painting our living room and making a mess in doing so, I would like my husband to say to me, “This is a tough job. Can I offer a suggestion that might make it easier for you?” rather than having him point’ out what a careless painter. I am and then tell me how I should be doing it. If you are on the receiving end of criticism, the “OK” response is a perfect solution. When someone comments negatively on a task you are doing or a personality issue, a natural response is to defend and attack. However, this approach is rarely effective as it puts both parties on the defensive. Instead, simply reply with “OK”. This brief one-word response acknowledges the other person’s comment without agreeing with it or feeling necessary to engage in a debate about it. It is important to remain emotionally attached to what the other person is saying, to listen without feeling, to be an objective observer. There is much that one can learn from a negative review. You can ask yourself: Did I make a mistake? Could I have done better? Did I give 100% of myself to the task at hand? If so, how can I improve? As for chronic (习惯性的) criticizers: It is important to set strict boundaries (界限) with them. Remove yourself from their presence when necessary. In any event, one can learn to be “OK” with criticism and not allow it to negatively impact their life or relationship with the other party. Examine it for any potential truths, and then ‘ let it go and just be “OK”. 35. What does the author want to show by using the example of painting? A. Nobody is perfect. B. The art of criticizing. C. The value of suggestions. D. The harm of criticizing. 36. What is the best way to respond when you are criticized by a person? A. Simply say “Thank you”. B. Defend yourself. C. Ignore the comment. D. Just say “OK”. 37. You are told to ask yourself some questions in Paragraph 4 so as to . A. better present negative reviews. B. learn from others’ mistakes C. take criticism objectively D. have more confidence in yourself 38. How should you treat people who always criticize others according to the author’s advice? A. Attack them sharply. B. Talk to them politely. C. Stay away from them. D. Be open to their suggestions. 【答案】35. B 36. D 37. C 38. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了如何应对批评,指出在任何情况下,一个人都可以学会接受批评,不让它对他们的生活或与另一方的关系产生负面影响。 【35题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“So what is the solution to criticism? I am and then tell me how I should be doing it.(那么,如何解决批评呢? 根据第三段“If you are on the receiving end of criticism, the “OK” response is a perfect solution.(如果你被批评了,回答“OK”是一个完美的解决方案)”可知,当你被人批评时,最好的回应方式是说“OK”。故选D。 【37题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“It is important to remain emotionally attached to what the other person is saying, to listen without feeling, to be an objective observer. There is much that one can learn from a negative review. You can ask yourself: Did I make a mistake? Could I have done better? Did I give 100%of myself to the task at hand? If so, how can I improve?( 重要的是要对他人所说的话保持情感上的依恋,不带感情地倾听,做一个客观的观察者。一个人可以从负面评价中学到很多东西。你可以问问自己:我做错了吗?我还能做得更好吗?我是否对手头的任务投入了100%的精力?如果是这样,我该如何改进?)”可知,你被要求问自己一些问题是为了客观地接受批评。故选C。 【38题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“As for chronic (习惯性的) criticizers: It is important to set strict boundaries (界限) with them. Remove yourself from their presence when necessary.(对于习惯性批评的人:与他们建立严格的界限是很重要的。必要时离开他们)”可知,你应该远离总是批评别人的人。故选C。 C There are moments in life when you’re in the middle of-some activity and think, “I love doing this. Love it!” Maybe it happens on the golf course, or camping, or when you’re having dinner at a favorite restaurant. There are so many things to love about modern life. I’m in love with 35 miles per hour. It’s a difficult kind of love to talk about in the present age of online short video and live streaming that constantly promote and glorify images of vehicles with roaring (轰鸣的) engines and smoking tires thundering across city streets in endless pursuit of adventure. My personality has never had a fast-and-crazy side. I vividly recall going to Disneyland as a young teenager and being emotionally thrashed (鞭打) on the Matterhorn roller coaster ride. Other kids were howling (叫喊) with delight at the sharp turns and steep drops while I was mentally repeating the phrases “Please be over soon” and “I don’t want to die”. Do not, however, assume I spend most of my road time trembling (颤抖) behind the steering wheel. Freeway fright is not my partner. After 45-plus years on the road, I can handle a vast range of traffic hardships. I’ve had my share of rigid joints and sweaty palms but not one accident since a curving fender (挡泥板) incident in college. I go with the flow. But in private situations, alone on some suburban avenue or country lane, I like to ease off the gas pedal, settle in at a smooth 35 mph. It’s a speed that allows me to appreciate my surroundings because the scenery doesn’t flash by in a blur. There’s also a significant safety factor because slowing down means I have more time to react and avoid holes, bouncing balls, wild animals, or other risks that may appear unexpectedly. This is my way of pushing back against the constantly increasing pace of our high-intensity, on-demand society. Think of it as a car drive on a trail. When you load up. for a trip, you don’t race across the countryside at a full dash. It’s much nicer to travel smoothly and find pleasure in the journey. 39. The writer thinks her love of 35 miles per hour . A. doesn’t agree with the modern society B. is too complex to be accepted by others C. will become popular after being advertised online D. will start a slow movement in society 40. The writer mentioned her experience in Disneyland to prove . A. Disneyland is a place where kids enjoy the delight of modern life B. she didn’t brave the challenge brought by high speed C. rides make children mentally, wild with joy D. caution is golden rule to avoid accidents 41. According to the 5th Paragraph, the writer . A. drove slowly behind other cars on freeway B. couldn’t handle an emergency in driving C. drove as fast as others on the road D. experienced a few traffic accidents 42. The best title for the passage may be . A. My life in the slow lane B. My habit of driving on roads C. My special love for racing D. My ‘slow’ pace of life 【答案】39. A 40. B 41. C 42. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文,主要讲述的是作者对以35英里时速驾驶的热爱,以及这种速度如何成为他在快节奏的现代生活中找到平静和乐趣的一种方式。 【39题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“It’s a difficult kind of love to talk about in the present age of online short video and live streaming that constantly promote and glorify images of vehicles with roaring (轰鸣的) engines and smoking tires thundering across city streets in endless pursuit of adventure.(在当今这个网络短视频和直播的时代,这是一种很难谈论的爱,这些视频不断地宣传和美化着汽车的形象,它们的发动机轰鸣着,轮胎冒着烟,在城市街道上轰鸣着,永无止境地追求冒险。)”可知,作者对35 miles per hour的爱与现代社会格格不入。故选A。 【40题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“My personality has never had a fast-and-crazy side.(我的性格从来就没有快速和疯狂的一面。)”和“I was mentally repeating the phrases “Please be over soon” and “I don’t want to die.(我在心里反复念叨着“请快点结束吧”和“我不想死”)”可知,作者提到她在迪斯尼乐园的经历是为了证明她没有勇敢面对高速带来的挑战。故选B。 【41题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段“Do not, however, assume I spend most of my road time trembling (颤抖) behind the steering wheel. Freeway fright is not my partner. After 45-plus years on the road, I can handle a vast range of traffic hardships.(然而,不要以为我在路上的大部分时间都在方向盘后面颤抖。高速公路恐惧症不是我的搭档。我在路上开了45年多,可以应付各种各样的交通困难。)”可知,根据第五段,作者在路上开车和别人一样快,故选C。 【42题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“I’m in love with 35 miles per hour.(我爱上了35英里的时速。)”和倒数第三段“But in private situations, alone on some suburban avenue or country lane, I like to ease off the gas pedal, settle in at a smooth 35 mph.(但在私人场合,比如独自在郊区大道或乡间小路上行驶时,我喜欢放松油门踏板,让车速平稳地保持在每小时35英里。)”可知,本文主要讲的是作者对以35英里时速驾驶的热爱,以及这种速度如何成为他在快节奏的现代生活中找到平静和乐趣的一种方式,因此最好的题目是A选项“My life in the slow lane(我在慢车道上的生活)”。故选A。 D After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together. Together, these deep human urges (驱策力) count for much more that ambition. Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why? Why? Why?” Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don’t have to be learned. We are born with them and need only recapture them. “The great man” said Mencius (孟子), “is he who does not lose his child’s heart.” Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires restful average. It encourages us to occupy our own little corner, to avoid foolish leaps into the dark, to be satisfied. Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake. How should you start? Modestly, so as not to become discouraged. I think of one friend who couldn’t arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. How she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement. One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven’t any special ability? Most people don’t; there are only a few geniuses. You haven’t any time? That’s good, because it’s always the people with no time who get things done. Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom’s Cabin while cooking. You’re too old? Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78. However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for you’ll never be more alive than you are at this moment. 43. In writing Paragraph 1, the author aims to________. A. propose a definition B. make a comparison C. reach a conclusion D. present an argument 44. What does the example of Galileo tell us? A. Trial and error leads to the finding of truth. B. Scientists tend to be curious and ambitious. C. Creativity results from challenging authority. D. Greatness comes from a lasting desire to explore. 45. What can we learn from Paragraphs 6 and 7? A. Gaining success helps you become an expert. B. The genius tends to get things done creatively. C. Lack of talent and time is no reason for taking no action. D. You should remain modest when approaching perfection. 【答案】43. D 44. D 45. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了获得成就的两个关键因素--好奇心和不满足,并阐述了获得这两种品质的方法。 【43题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.”(经过多年对人性的观察,我断定成就非凡者与平庸之人之间的区别在于两种品质:好奇心与不满。我从来没有见过一个杰出的人缺乏这两方面。我从没见过一个普通人两者兼备。这两者是天生一对。)故可推知,通过写第一段,作者的目的是提出一个论点,即成就非凡者与平庸之人之间的区别在于两种品质:好奇心与不满。故选D项。 【44题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Together, these deep human urges count for much more that ambition. Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why? Why? Why?””(这些深层的人类欲望加在一起比野心更重要。当伽利略从比萨斜塔上扔下不同重量的物体并计算它们落到地面的时间时,他不仅是雄心勃勃。历史上所有伟大的人物都像伽利略一样好奇,不满地问:“为什么?为什么?为什么?”)可知,伽利略的例子告诉我们伟大源于持久的探索欲望。故选D项。 【45题详解】 推理判断题。根据第六段中“ I think of one friend who couldn’t arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. How she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.(我想起一位朋友,她不会插花来满足自己。她很好奇专家们是怎么做到的。她是一位专门写插花书的专家之一。)”以及第七段“One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.”(开始的一种方法是回答你自己的借口。 Lee Shapiro is a retired judge. At one point in his career, Lee realized that love is the greatest power there is. As a result, Lee became a hugger. He began offering everybody a hug. His colleagues called him “the hugging judge”. About six years ago Lee created what he calls his Hugger Kit. On the outside it reads “A heart for a hug,” and there are 30 little hearts inside. Lee will go around to people and offer them a little red heart in exchange for a hug. One day, Lee’s friend Nancy Johnston called, “Lee, take a bunch(串) of your Hugger Kits and let’s go out to the home for the disables.” When they arrived at the home, they started giving out balloon hats, hearts and hugs to the patients. Lee was uncomfortable. He had never before hugged people who were seriously ill, and severely retarded (智力迟钝的). But after a while it became easier. A group of doctors and nurses followed them. After several hours Lee came to the last person, Leonard. Leonard was wearing a big white bib (围嘴), which he was drooling (流口水) on. Lee looked at Leonard and said, “Let’s go, Nancy. There’s no way we can get through to this person.” Nancy replied, “Come on, Lee. He’s a fellow human being, too, isn’t he?" Then she placed a funny balloon hat on his head. Lee took one of his little red hearts and placed it on Leonard’s bib. He took a deep breath, leaned (屈身) down and gave Leonard a hug. All of a sudden Leonard began to scream, “Eeeeehh! Eeeeeehh!”Some of the other patients in the room began to make a loud sound together. Every doctor and nurse was crying. Lee asked the head nurse, “What’s going on?” Lee will never forget what she said: “This is the first time in 23 years we’ve seen Leonard smile.” 46. What’s the Hugger Kit like? A. changing your reaction to insomnia will help B. insomnia is frequently caused by the effect of pressure C. it’s limiting eating that matters most D. having 1,000 mg of caffeine will help you sleep 33. According to Lisa Derosimo, what results in a good sleep? A Having a regular daily routine. B. Taking various medicines. C. Having a big meal before going to bed. D. Viewing an online live broadcast in bed. 34. From the passage we can infer alternate-nostril breathing is a good way to . A. breathe deeply B. build your body C. exercise nose D. relax yourself B We live in a judgmental world where people are quick to point out the faults and imperfections of others yet seem unaware of their own. C There are moments in life when you’re in the middle of-some activity and think, “I love doing this. My ‘slow’ pace of life D After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance curiosity and discontent. 第二卷 非选择题 (共25分) 注意事项: 1.请用黑色墨水的钢笔或签字笔将答案写在答题卷上。 2.本卷共6小题, 满分25分。 第四部分 写作(共两节,满分25分) 第一节 阅读表达 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 Lee Shapiro is a retired judge.
