A study of trees has shown that last summer was the hottest in 2,000 years. Scientists usually study changes in temperature by comparing (对比) temperature records in different periods. However, the records before 1850 are not in detail, so scientists decided to use a different way to study historical temperatures. They did this by looking at the tree-ring records from thousands of trees across nine different areas in the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere (北半球).
Tree rings are the circles you see on a stump (树桩) of wood when a tree is cut down. They hold important information. The number of rings show how many years the tree has been alive, and the rings can also show local climate (气候) conditions.
Using tree-ring data (数据), the scientists were able to work out the temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere every summer between the years AD 1 and 1849. They compared these to last year’s summer temperatures and found that 2023 was warmer than any summer during the period studied.
Scientists say that tree rings are useful for studying how the climate has changed over time. However, there isn’t enough tree-ring data from the Southern Hemisphere. Because the climate there may not be as seasonally changeable as that in the Northern Hemisphere. Besides, the Southern Hemisphere has less forested area. Historically, more study has been done in the Northern Hemisphere, so more data has been collected.
24. What does “a different way” in paragraph 1 refer to (指代)? ________
A. Visiting nine different areas.
B. Studying the tree-ring records.

D. Checking the records before 1850.

D. The ages of the trees and local climate.
26. How is the last paragraph organized? ________
A. Time order.
B. Space order.
C. General to specific.
D. Specific to general.
One day I will write a big book about the Lilliput. I will not describe all the customs (习俗) here, but I do want to say something about this interesting country.
The Lilliputians are well educated people, but their way of writing is strange. They do not write from left to right like the Europeans or from the top of the page downwards, like the Chinese. They write from one corner of the paper to the opposite corner!
Their ideas about children are very different from ours. They do not believe that parents should choose their children’s education. All children are taken away from their parents when they are young, and are sent to nursery schools (幼儿园). When they are older, children go to different schools. Some children go to schools where they learn about equality, honor and bravery. Some others go to schools where they learn different job skills.
Their teachers are always with them. Their parents are allowed to visit them twice a year and kiss them on greeting and leaving, but they may not whisper to their children, use loving words, or bring them presents or sweets.
Girls also go to schools, where they learn the same things as boys. They are also taught about family life. But they never hear the stories of silly women. As a result, the women of Lilliput are smart and wise.
27. The way of writing in Lilliput is ________.
A. from the bottom upwards
B. from right to left like Europeans
C. from one corner to the opposite
D. from top to bottom like Chinese

D. Schools are more important than parents in children’s education.
29. In which part of the newspaper can you read the passage? ________
A. LIFE SKILLS
B. GREAT NOVELS
C SCIENCE WORLD
D. SCHOOL TIME
“I found it! I found it!” a second grader shouted with excitement as he rushed to Ms. Liao, the librarian. “This is exactly what I’ve been looking for—Journey to the West.”
Liao checked the student’s library card. “Have a good read, my dear,” she said. “Why don’t you have a chat with me next time, so that I can recommend a book I like to you?” Seeing the boy rush back to a plastic chair in the corner of the room, holding the book like a box of treasure, Liao let out a broad smile.
“Children need a stable (稳定的) environment to develop reading skills,” she said. The library, covering less than 20 square meters and holding about 5,000 books, provides such an environment for the children of migrant workers (外来务工者) in Tongzhou, Beijing.
The library is part of the Weilan Library project, which works to set up libraries for migrant children. Zuo Qiao, who started the project, believes that every child should have the chance to read in libraries. “Three rules are important in any one of our libraries: a large number of high-quality children’s books; consistent (连贯的) opening hours; and allowing the kids to make their own choice of books to borrow and read,” he said.
Librarian Liao said that when it opened on Feb. 13 this year, the small room was filled with so many students that she had to organize different visiting hours for different grades.

April 22, 2024 marks the 55th World Earth Day. This year’s theme is “Planet vs. Plastics” (全球战塑). So, I decided to try something different: a whole day without using any plastic. It sounded exciting, but it was quite hard.
My morning started with a homemade breakfast in a glass bowl. But later when I tried to order juice as usual, I had to give up because of those plastic cups. I faced a bigger problem at the supermarket. Almost everything was wrapped (包装) in plastic—from fruits and vegetables to meat. It made me realize that plastic is everywhere, making it hard to carry on with my no-plastic plan.
Plastic is widely used in our daily life. It can be made into all kinds of things such as bags, bottles and toys. It’s tough (牢固的) and it’s really light. So we depend heavily on it.
But there’s one thing: Using too much plastic can be harmful to the environment. Humans use about one million plastic bottles every minute, and more than 5 trillion plastic bags are used each year, according to a United Nations report. The world produces 200 million tons of plastic waste each year, but only less than 10 percent has been recycled. Most of them end up in the lakes, rivers and oceans, hurting animals and nature.
To make a difference, China stopped the production, sale and use of plastic shopping bags with a thickness of less than 0.025 mm in 2008. From 2010 to 2020, China recycled 170 million tons of waste plastic. These have helped reduce plastic waste.
Let’s join hands and make a clean and beautiful world.
48. What did the writer decide to do to support the World Earth Day?
______________________________________________
49. According to the passage, why is plastic useful but harmful? (No more than 20 words.)
______________________________________________
50. What can you do to help reduce plastic waste?

1. It has been more than 30 years ________ Project Hope was set up in China.
A. when B. since C. before D. till

when当…… 根据“It has been more than 30 years…Project Hope was set up in China.”
2. —Joseph, don’t jump to any conclusion, ________when you meet someone only for the first time.
—Don’t worry, I won’t.
A. exactly B. specially
C. closely D. especially
根据“don’t jump to any conclusion,…when you meet someone only for the first time”可知,此处强调尤其第一次见到某人的时候,不要急于下结论,故选D。

A. discussion B. treatment
C. communication D. condition

根据“Have they made up their mind”及否定回答“Not yet”可知,此处指还没有下定决心的原因是因为细节还在讨论中,under discussion“在讨论中”符合语境。故选A。
4 —She never ________ herself to make a mistake in homework.
—That’s why she always comes first.
A. asks B. allows C. supports D. expects
根据“That’s why she always comes first.”
5. —Kevin, how’s your trip in France?
—Everything goes well ________ greeting with a kiss. It makes me uncomfortable.
A. like B. without C. except D. including
like像;without没有;except除了……

A. was done B. has been done
C. is done D. will be done

7. —You ________ be hungry after all that walking.
—Exactly! I am as hungry as a wolf.
A. must B. could C. can’t D. needn’t
【答案】A

C. Comparing temperature records.
D. Checking the records before 1850.
25. What information can tree rings provide? ________
A. The time when trees were cut down.
B. The places where the trees grew.
C. The height of the trees in warmer places.
D. The ages of the trees and local climate.
26. How is the last paragraph organized? ________
A. Time order.
B. Space order.
C. General to specific.
D. Specific to general.
B 25. D 26. D

根据“However, the records before 1850 are not in detail, so scientists decided to use a different way to study historical temperatures. They did this by looking at the tree-ring records from thousands of trees across nine different areas in the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere (北半球).”

A from the bottom upwards
B. from right to left like Europeans

I like reading more
Good morning, dear teachers and friends!
Reading is a lifelong journey and plays an important part in our life. It can not only open our minds but also make us get more useful knowledge that we can’t learn from school books. I often read books about history and some interesting novels in my free time. The more I read, the more thoughtful I will be. I didn’t use to read before. I spent much time in playing games, watching TV or listening to music. Finally I realized it was bad for me, so I took up reading. Reading has made my life colourful and meaningful. I read books at least three times a week now.
If you enjoy reading, I think first you should read the books you like. Secondly, you need to develop good reading habits. Finally, you need to take reading notes frequently.
