Moving can be daunting (令人怯步) — whether it’s to a new city or an entirely new country. The good news? Volunteering can be a great way to settle into a new community, meet people, and learn valuable skills.
Kajal Patil moved to the United States from India in February 2017. Having previously volunteered for two years as an assistant yoga (瑜伽) teacher in her home country, Kayal was enthusiastic about volunteering and began looking for volunteer opportunities that match her interests on Volunteer Match.
Kajal was drawn to a volunteer opportunity with the Meridian International Center to review applications on behalf of the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI). YLAI aims to empower Latin American and Caribbean business and social entrepreneurs (企业家) to transform their societies and contribute more fully to economic development, security, human rights, and good governance.
Kajal had previous experience working with the markets candidates were applying from, and the position also allowed her to work remotely. Her role involved reviewing 44 in-depth applications from potential candidates across Latin America and the Caribbean for a four-week fellowship in the U. S. She was responsible for describing the business ideas presented by these candidates, assessing the social impact of their businesses, and determining the strength of candidates to carry out their plans.
Kajal says that this volunteer opportunity super-charged her existing skills while helping her build new ones such as time management, business analysis, decision-making, planning, and presenting. She is now looking for her next volunteer opportunity and reflects positively on her experience with Meridian International Center. “A new country brings in a lot of new experiences and volunteering helped me to settle into a new environment,” adds Kajal. “By helping others, I felt needed in society. It indeed boosted my self-worth.”

Do you remember being asked what you wanted to be when you grew up? No doubt the more imaginative your answer, the more approval you would get. But once we reach adolescence (青春期), there’s far less tolerance for answers like, “I’m going to be a marine biologist, circus clown and journalist!” Now the question translates as You are allowed one identity in this life, so which is it?
At university you need to choose a subject to major in, which leads to one specific degree, intended for one type of job. The message that you need to specialise is reinforced (强化) in many contexts. Career guidance books and counsellors give you tests to help you identify your dream job.
But what happens if you’re curious about several subjects, and there are many things you’d like to study? If you’re unable or unwilling to settle on a single career path, you might worry that you don’t have one true calling like everybody else and that, therefore, your life lacks purpose. As the saying goes, you’re a “jack of all trades, master of none”.
In reality, the ambitious young people of today are more interested in moving around and doing different things. In the modern workplace, people are working flexibly and the individual is in control of their professional life and in a position to make decision s about how, when and where they work. Rather than finding something and doing it forever, the new challenge is to find a way of working that works for you.
This new flexible workplace is one where generalists feel at ease. People who have a range of interests are suited to the modern workplace in two essential ways. Firstly, they are used to combining two or more fields and it is at the intersection (十字路口) between seemingly unrelated ideas that innovation often happens. Secondly, people who change roles frequently are less afraid of trying new things and stepping out of their comfort zones. They’re fast learners.
8. What does the author say about university students?
A. They tend to lose their imagination.
B. They feel pressured to choose a speciality.
C. They could benefit from career counselling.
D. They find it impossible to make decisions independently.
9. What does the author suggest in the third paragraph?
A. People refuse to choose a career on purpose.
B. Everybody should find a passion and stick to it.
C. You’ll never succeed unless you find your dream job.
D. Some people may be unsure what career they really like.
10. What are people like in the modern workplace?
A. They rarely decide what they want to do.
B. They prefer to stay in the same profession.
C. They are constantly challenged to change jobs.
D. They are taking control of how they work.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The importance of continuous learning.
B. Advantages of generalists in the future workplace.
C. Ways the modern workplace makes use of flexible workers.
D. The relationship between personal interests and career choices
D
One of humanity’s greatest achievements has been mastering routes across the world’s oceans. Communities separated by thousands of miles have been brought into contact. Customs have been decisively changed by the movement of ships across the oceans. No one drank tea in medieval (中世纪的) Europe, but once contact had been made with the tea-drinking Chinese, tea became the favorite of millions of people from Sweden to the United States.
We tend to think that the opening of the oceans was the work of great explorers like Christopher Columbus, especially the 15th-century pioneers who edged their way through uncharted waters to southern Africa, the Indian Ocean and the spice lands of the Indies. But while these men did give the Age of Discovery its name, they didn’t start the exploration of the world’s oceans.
There were scores of merchants who developed trade links across the world and started modern globalization. These were the people who really mastered the oceans and brought the continents into contact. Already around 2500 BCE, merchants were setting out from what is now Iraq, the seat of the ancient Sumerian civilization, carrying silver ingots (银锭) to India. On the way, they got copper (铜) from Oman and brought precious objects such as carnelian (红玛瑙) from India. The Indian Ocean became one of the great channels of trade between nations.
By 1500 CE, the Portuguese had begun to show interest in what the Atlantic might offer. That interest had resulted in the settlement of unoccupied islands. When European sailors started entering the Pacific and the Indian Ocean in the 16th century, they found a lively maritime (海运的) world that they could never truly dominate. Since then, the oceans have only continued to tie the world together.
In the 21st century, however, new factors have changed entirely the way goods are carried across the seas. The great port cities of the world have been replaced by automated docks. Container ships carry many thousands of containers. Business today operates on a much larger level than it did just two decades ago. And yet, through trade and cultural exchange, the seas continue to connect even the most distant lands.
12. Why does the author mention tea drinking in the first paragraph?
A. To discuss the health benefits of drinking tea.
B. To emphasize the popularity of tea in medieval Europe
C. To show how Europeans started to adopt Chinese customs.
D To highlight the spread of cultural practices through ocean contact.
13. What does the underlined part “edged their way” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Dominated the maritime world.
B. Settled on unoccupied islands quickly.
C. Successfully established a convenient route.
D. Carefully moved forward under challenging situations.
14. Who are the pioneers of ocean exploration according to the text?
A. The merchants from the ancient Sumerian civilization.
B. The great explorers during the Age of Discovery.
C. The Portuguese settlers of remote islands.
D. The European sailors who entered the Pacific and the Indian Ocean.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Impact of Tea on Global Trade
B. Ocean Exploration Changed Human History
C. Merchants Advanced the Development of Capitalism
D. The Transformation of Ocean Shipping in the 21st Century

When we were finally dismissed from the last class of the day, the students streamed out of the classrooms. It was another boring day after school. I dragged my feet home as I sighed. Yet another uneventful day, I thought. Little did I know that the day would take a turn for the worse.
The lift lobby (电梯间) of my flat was old and dirty. The walls, which were painted white, had been dirtied over many years. I reached my flat’s lobby, and pressed the lift button and went in. Just then, Mrs Lim, my elderly neighbour, hobbled (蹒跚) in. She looked ancient with tissue paper white hair, wearing a faded old-fashioned dress. I held the lift door open, flashing a friendly smile, and politely greeted her. I asked her how she felt that day and pressed the buttons. She thanked me for being so polite, then we were silent for the rest of the ride.
The lift fell down increasingly fast. There were loud clanking sounds here and there while the lift grew slower and slower. My heart beat hard and fast as my hands turned cold and wet with sweat. Unfortunately, the lift came to an abrupt stop at the fifth floor. I pressed the buttons hard several times, but it was of no help. The lights on the buttons had gone out. It soon dawned on me that we were trapped. An icy fear crept up my spine. Mrs Lim was hysterical (歇斯底里).
“We will never get out!” she cried with her face pale. It had become a colourless mask. I had no time to lose. I pressed the bell in the lift immediately. The sound was surely deafening, but what other choice did I have? Mrs Lim burst into tears. I tried my very best to comfort her, telling her that everything would be all right and that we needed to find out how to get out safely. Mrs Lim began having trouble breathing, and I immediately helped her sit down and loosened her collar.
Paragraph 1: Several minutes passed, but no help came.

Paragraph 2: Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door.

Moving can be daunting (令人怯步的) — whether it’s to a new city or an entirely new country.

D. They find it impossible to make decisions independently.
9. What does the author suggest in the third paragraph?

B. Everybody should find a passion and stick to it.

A. They rarely decide what they want to do.
B. They prefer to stay in the same profession.
C. They are constantly challenged to change jobs.
D. They are taking control of how they work.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?

D. To highlight the spread of cultural practices through ocean contact.
A The merchants from the ancient Sumerian civilization.
B. The great explorers during the Age of Discovery.
C. The Portuguese settlers of remote islands.
D. The European sailors who entered the Pacific and the Indian Ocean.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Impact of Tea on Global Trade
B. Ocean Exploration Changed Human History
C. Merchants Advanced the Development of Capitalism
D. The Transformation of Ocean Shipping in the 21st Century
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. A 15. B
【解析】

【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“One of humanity’s greatest achievements has been mastering routes across the world’s oceans. Communities separated by thousands of miles have been brought into contact. Customs have been decisively changed by the movement of ships across the oceans. No one drank tea in medieval (中世纪的) Europe, but once contact had been made with the tea-drinking Chinese, tea became the favorite of millions of people from Sweden to the United States.(人类最伟大的成就之一就是掌握了跨越世界海洋的航线。相隔数千英里的社区已经联系上了。远洋船只的往来使风俗习惯发生了决定性的变化。在中世纪的欧洲,没有人喝茶,但一旦与爱喝茶的中国人接触,茶就成为从瑞典到美国数百万人的最爱)”可知,作者在本段提到茶这个例子,是为了强调通过海洋接触传播文化习俗。故选D项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据前文“We tend to think that the opening of the oceans was the work of great explorers like Christopher Columbus, especially the 15th-century pioneers(我们倾向于认为海洋的打开是像克里斯托弗·哥伦布这样伟大的探险家的工作,尤其是15世纪的先驱们)”以及后文“through uncharted waters to southern Africa, the Indian Ocean and the spice lands of the Indies.(穿过未知的水域,到达了非洲南部、印度洋和印度群岛的香料之地)”可知,像哥伦布这样伟大的探险家去探索位置水域,应该是充满挑战的情况下谨慎前行,符合实际,所以推知“edged their way”应是“在充满挑战的情况下小心翼翼地前进”之意,和D项意思相近。故选D项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“There were scores of merchants who developed trade links across the world and started modern globalization. These were the people who really mastered the oceans and brought the continents into contact. Already around 2500 BCE, merchants were setting out from what is now Iraq, the seat of the ancient Sumerian civilization, carrying silver ingots (银锭) to India. 【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“One of humanity’s greatest achievements has been mastering routes across the world’s oceans. Communities separated by thousands of miles have been brought into contact. Customs have been decisively changed by the movement of ships across the oceans. No one drank tea in medieval (中世纪的) Europe, but once contact had been made with the tea-drinking Chinese, tea became the favorite of millions of people from Sweden to the United States.(人类最伟大的成就之一就是掌握了跨越世界海洋的航线。相隔数千英里的社区已经联系上了。远洋船只的往来使风俗习惯发生了决定性的变化。在中世纪的欧洲,没有人喝茶,但一旦与爱喝茶的中国人接触,茶就成为从瑞典到美国数百万人的最爱)”以及纵观全文可知,主要讲述了海洋探索对人类历史的影响,包括促进了全球化、改变了人们的生活方式、推动了科技的发展等。因此,B选项“海洋探索改变了人类历史”是适合本文的标题。故选B项。

So when we hear the ocean is in trouble from the effects of overfishing, climate change, and pollution, it’s easy to feel powerless.(每一种生物都依赖海洋。因此,当我们听到海洋因过度捕捞、气候变化和污染而陷入困境时,我们很容易感到无能为力)”以及后文“But there are plenty of action s you can take that will make a big difference for the ocean.(但你可以采取很多行动,这将对海洋产生重大影响)”可知,前文讲述面对海洋问题,我们很容易感到无能为力,后文讲述我们可以采取行动,所以E项“Many of these issues will require leadership from governments and businesses.(其中许多问题都需要政府和企业的领导)”承接上文,和下文构成转折关系,符合文意。故选E项。
【17题详解】
分析设空,为本段小标题,根据后文“The more you learn about the ocean, the better prepared you’ll be to inspire change-and help others do the same. Thankfully, there are many ways to educate yourself about the ocean and the challenges it faces, from books and documentaries to websites, museums, art exhibits, and more.(你对海洋了解得越多,你就能更好地激发变革——并帮助其他人也这样做。值得庆幸的是,有很多方法可以让你了解海洋及其面临的挑战,从书籍、纪录片到网站、博物馆、艺术展览等等)”可知,本段主要讲述了要提高自己对海洋的认识,所以A项“Increase your ocean IQ.(提高你的海洋认知)”符合本段主题,为本段小标题。故选A项。

【19题详解】
设空位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“Decrease the effects of climate change on the ocean by cutting your carbon footprint at home: turn off lights when you’re not using them, walk or ride your bike to work, and demand renewable energy options in your community.(通过减少你在家里的碳足迹来减少气候变化对海洋的影响:不使用灯的时候关灯,步行或骑自行车去上班,并在你的社区要求可再生能源的选择)”可知,本段主要讲述减少碳足迹,所以F项“In the last decades, the ocean has absorbed 90% of the extra heat created by burning fossil fuels.(在过去的几十年里,海洋吸收了燃烧化石燃料产生的90%的额外热量)”符合本段主题,为本段中心句。故选F项。
【20题详解】
根据前文“Consider booking your next trip through a responsible travel company that’s committed to protecting wildlife and using guides who are aware of rules and best practices. Once you arrive at your destination, be respectful of marine life and habitats. And be careful about your purchases.(考虑通过一家负责任的旅游公司预订你的下一次旅行,该公司致力于保护野生动物,并使用了解规则和最佳实践的导游。一旦你到达目的地,尊重海洋生物和栖息地。买东西时要小心)”可知,本段主要讲述旅游时注意保护海洋生态,购买东西时要小心,所以G项“Purchasing items like shark products damages delicate ecosystems and threatens endangered species.(购买鲨鱼制品会破坏脆弱的生态系统,威胁到濒危物种)”符合本段主题,是对前文的举例。故选G项。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Several minutes passed, but no help came. The air inside the lift grew stale, and panic started to set in. Mrs Lim's condition was worsening, and I felt a sense of helplessness creeping over me. I tried to stay calm and think of a way out, but the situation seemed dire. The silence was deafening, broken only by Mrs Lim’s labored breathing and occasional sobs. Time seemed to stretch on endlessly as we waited for a miracle.
Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door. Relief flooded through me as I realized help had finally arrived. The sound of tools clanging against the door signaled their efforts to rescue us. Moments later, the door was pried open, and fresh air rushed in. We were safe. Mrs Lim was quickly attended to by the paramedics, and I was filled with gratitude for their swift response. As we were escorted out of the lift, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of appreciation for the fragility of life and the importance of helping others in times of need.
