His mother ____23____. “I guessed so. But I like hearing the sound of your voice while I work.”
Jatto knew what she meant. He had enjoyed listening to her story as he bottled the nuts. It made the work seem ____24____. “I have an idea” he said. “Next time, I will read a story to you in English, then I will tell you the same story in Esan. We can even make up songs together.”
“Great! And I will tell you stories in Esan and you can say them back to me in English Let’s ‘never’ stop ____25____ stories.”

It took a thunderstorm for Gordon Hempton to truly enjoy quiet. After a visit home to Seattle, Washington in 1980, the graduate student was tired from the 3,000 km way back to his university in Wisconsin.
The August temperature was high and it was unnecessary to live in a hotel. Hempton got out of the car and lay down in a field. Suddenly, a thunderstorm sounded overhead. Too tired to move, he decided to stay right there. What he did next led to an awakening (顿悟): he listened.
“I heard all: the movement of the air, the insect activity, the drops of the rain, the echo of the thunder,” he says. “My eyes were closed, but it was as if I could see all the creatures that I had been living with but never known.” Hempton’s awakening was so lively that he quickly dropped out of university, giving up a degree in Economics (经济学位), and changed his life.
After that, Hempton travelled within Olympic National Park with microphone and recorder, where he captured (捕捉) the wonderful sounds from the wildlife in quiet. Quiet, in this sense, does not mean complete silence. He says, “We might say that quiet offers a chance to be aware of our surroundings.”
Although he has these ear-attracting experiences, Hempton realized that quiet places were disappearing, with noise pollution making it more difficult to listen to the quiet sounds of nature.
In 1998, Hempton went to Hawaii to collect sounds of endangered animals and plants, which were played at a photography exhibition later.
Now 67, he is a famous acoustic ecologist (声学生态学家) and co-founder of Quiet Parks International (QPI), an organization that protects natural sounds by testing sound levels and encouraging visitors to understand the importance of quiet.
31. What made Gordon Hempton leave the university?
A. His worries about future. B. His tiredness of school work.
C. The long distance from the university to his home. D. An experience on his way to university.
32. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Quiet doesn’t mean no sound.
B. Quiet helps one hear sounds of nature.
C. Quiet can awake one’s sense.
D. Quiet places are missing because of human beings.
33. What’s the genre (体裁) of this passage?
A. A narrative which tells a person’s life experiences.
B. A comedy which makes people laugh.
C. A mystery which creates a mysterious story.
D. A drama which has some kind of performance.
34. What did Gordon Hempton hear during the awakening?
①air moving ②rain dropping ③people whispering
④wind blowing ⑤echo of thunder
A. ①②④ B. ②③⑤ C. ①②⑤ D. ②④⑤
35. The best title for the passage would be
A. Environment Protection B. A Science Research about Sound
C. A Man with Great Achievements D. A Story about Fighting for Quiet
C
In today’s fast-growing city areas, animal-caring technology offers new ways for us to help and understand animals living among us. Can technology teach us to better care for animals in our cities? Will they cause trouble for animals? Answers may be different.
Yes, these creative ways bring worries. In 2023, Bird Buddy made Internet-controlled machines to feed birds. Questions came up about whether it made animals overly reliant. “It has been too easy for them to get food, they might end up waiting to be fed.” a netizen said. Similarly, many raccoons (浣熊) in cities have become so reliant that they forgot how to live in the wild.
But there is a bright side about using technology to help animals, too. The Hello Street Cat project in China uses web cameras so people can watch and feed street cats online. The project makes us feel more connected to the stray cats and realize our role in animal protection. Through the camera, people found out that street cats had mostly been house pets before. The finding leads more people to raise money for animal protection organizations. “We put them there,” one bullet comment (弹幕) says, “it’s time to take action.”
Another example is using GPS to track where city animals go. Even though some say this might scare or stress the animals, scientists found that it helps both people and animals. It teaches more people about the needs of stray dogs and birds. We can learn a lot about how to keep them safe in cities while respecting their habits.
Many creators work with technology and a kind heart. The good points of animal caring technology may, and should at last outweigh the bad. More caring projects like Hello Street Cat will take care of animals while educating people on the good way to treat these amazing creatures among us.
36. How does the writer introduce the topic to us?
A. By telling stories. B. By asking questions.
C. By providing examples. D. By comparing differences.
37. What does “overly reliant” probably mean in paragraph 2?
A. not able to live by oneself B. too relaxed around people
C. forgetting how to fly D. growing too fast in number
38. What does the writer think of Hello Street Cat project?
A. It might make the animals scared or stressed
B. It can’t really help us understand the animals.
C. It makes more people want to help the animals.
D. It teaches us a lot about cats as house pets.
39. Which can best shows the structure of this passage? (①for Paragraph 1)
A. B. C. D.
40. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To tell us about the dangers of technology.
B. To describe how to create new technology.
C. To explain how to feed animals in cities.
D. To suggest how technology can help animals.

39. Which can best shows the structure of this passage? (①for Paragraph 1)
A. B. C. D.
