Unit 1 Could you please clean your room?
素养提升专题
Ⅰ.阅读理解
It is common for adults in their thirties to still depend on their parents to do
laundry for them.According to a survey by Beko, more than a third of British adults
wish their parents would still do the washing for them. Why do many children still rely
on their parents when they have grown up? The people that Beko quizzed gave a
whole host of reasons, including:
•“Mom enjoys doing it.”
•“I was struggling to keep on top of it.”
•“I dropped it off because I was busy.”
•“Their washing machine is faster or better than mine.”

While some may view this reliance(依赖) on parents for laundry as laziness or
convenience, it is important to note that many young people simply do not know how
to do laundry properly. In fact, more than half of the interviewees in the Beko’s
survey said they would rather ask their mother for laundry advice than depend on
Google.

To help their adult children become more independent in doing their own
laundry, parents can create a checklist that covers various aspects of the laundry
process. This checklist could include information on how to effectively separate
laundry, how to read clothes labels, how to solve common issues such as stuck zips
(卡住的拉链) or tissues(纸巾) in pockets, how to care for delicate(脆弱的)
items, understanding different washing machine settings, choosing the right
detergents(清洁剂) and stain removers, and how to properly hang and dry clothes
to avoid creasing.

III
If creating a checklist does not work, parents can consider using financial
incentives(激励) or implementing(实施) strict rules that stop access to their own
laundry machines. However, the checklist and advice offer a more balanced
approach, providing guidance and support while still encouraging
independence. After all, the method will depend on the parenting style and what
works best for each child.
