In February 2025,China had a nationwide policy(政策) to give high school students two full days off every weekend. Students in grades 10 and 11 can now rest on both Saturday and Sunday. This policy is to make students less stressed. Before that, many students only had one day or even half a day to rest each week. Now,the government asks schools to stop all weekend classes and exams, allowing students to relax or practice personal interests.
Most students welcome the policy. It gives them more time to do things they enjoy. "I finally have time to play basketball and read novels, "said Li Ming,a 16﹣year﹣old student" I feel less tired and have more energy during schooldays."Studies shows these changes help students perform better in class and learn faster.
However, not everyone feels the same way. Some parents worry their children might spend too much time watching TV or playing video games instead of studying.Others are afraid that less school time could lower exam grades."Weekends used to be important for reviewing lessons.I'm afraid my child will fall behind, "said a parent.
Education experts believe this policy marks a turning point in China's education."It's not just about giving students free time—it's about teaching them to balance (平衡) study and life,"said Professor Wang from Beijing University, "We hope this policy will create a relaxing environment for the students."

John and Nick are best friends and they hang out together almost every day. However, about a month ago, they got into the biggest fight.
It started on a Sunday when Nick went over to John’s house to play tennis. But John said he wanted to go to watch his elder brother’s football game instead. When Nick asked if he could go to, John said no. Nick felt hurt. He asked why he couldn’t go. John got angry and said, “I want to do something without you for a change!” On Monday at school, Nick was so angry that he left a note on John’s desk. John was really sad after reading the note.
What’s going on?
Even the best friendship has problems. This is what happened between John and Nick. It doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong with the friendship. It just means that the two friends should not spend every minute together.
Ways to stop the fight:
John could:
☆Apologize for the tone (语气) he used when he said he wanted to do something without Nick.
☆Explain that sometimes he needs to stay alone.
☆Promise to be nicer to Nick in the future.
Nick could:
☆Say sorry for leaving the note and explain that it was a bad way to solve the problem.
Way to avoid (避免) the fight:
Open communication. There was a better way for John to let Nick know that he needed his own space.

There is always a discussion about whether you should get your kids to do chores at home or not. However, getting kids to do housework is really good for children in many ways. So I find it hard to understand why you wouldn’t get them to do chores.
The most important reason is that getting children to do chores teaches them a lot of life skills. They need to know how to clean, how to cook, how to shop, etc. It is, however, one of the things that schools don’t teach completely, so it is one of the main parts of learning that parents should provide for children before they leave home.
Children like to feel proud about their achievements. Making them help around the house can really help to give them a sense of pride (自豪). Also, giving them praise (表扬) for helping will make them want to do more. They will feel happy to be able to help around the house.
Giving your children a job to do or an area in the house to look after will help them learn how to be responsible in their future life. They will see the benefit (益处) of keeping things organized, clean and tidy—and also be more thankful for what you do for them as they grow up.
Planning is a life skill that can be got from helping around the house. As children get older, you can start to teach them how to understand the needs of themselves and others and plan by themselves. For example, if they help with the washing, let them make sure that they do it in time. They may start to plan ahead (提前).
All these reasons for getting kids to help around the house mean that they’ll grow up with a great set of skills that can be good for them throughout their lives. Why not get started today?
48. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The ways to make kids do chores.
B. The importance of kids doing chores.
C. The skills kids can learn at school.
49. What does the writer think about letting kids do chores?
A. He is against it. B. He doesn’t care about it. C. He agrees with it.
50. What is the best title of this passage?
A. Why Kids Should Do Chores
B. The Secrets of Teaching Life Skills
C. How to Plan for the Future

Put our free time to good use
Thanks to the “double reduction” policy, we have more free time than before. How should we put the time to good use? Here are some of my ideas.
First, we can help our parents do chores, such as sweeping the floor, taking out the rubbish. Doing chores can help us develop our independence. Besides, we can learn to take care of ourselves. Second, we should try to keep a good relationship with our parents. In our free time, we should communicate more with our parents and argue less. In order to understand each other, we should spend more time with parents. Third, we should often do volunteer work in our free time. For example, we can clean up the neighborhood. We can also tell stories to children in the neighborhood and help the weak. Finally, we should try to improve ourselves. We can do exercise more and read more books like some famous classics. Also, we can listen to music to make our free time more meaningful.
All in all, the policy is good for us because we can have more time to do whatever we want.
