It’s frightening for the National Literacy Trust to report that in 2023 only 43 per cent of children and young people say they read for pleasure. It’s worrying that reading is in danger of becoming a niche hobby. Not all homes have books as part of the furniture.
It’s vital for every child to have the opportunity to discover the joy of reading. Reading supports empathy (共情) and creativity. It stimulates imagination, enhances vocabulary, brings excitement and also offers comfort. Storytelling has always been part of human existence.
Sadly, hundreds of public libraries have closed during the past ten years. Some schools do have a space called “the library” but the books are old and don’t necessarily reflect our diverse modern life. Children need to have the chance to read about communities, cultures and families like their own to enhance their sense of identity. They need new books as well as beloved literary classics. One in seven primary schools don’t have a library at all, which rises to one in four in my community. A report released today by the Primary School Library Alliance shows how important it is for there to be attractive school libraries. I know that a new library can make a difference.
At Harbour School in Newhaven, East Sussex, one boy showed me a copy of my book The Story of Tracy Beaker and said he’d loved taking it home to show his mum. I asked if she’d read it to him. “Mum can’t read properly yet so I’m reading it to her, and we both laugh at the story,” he told me. It would be wonderful if all children, and indeed their families, could benefit from school libraries in this way.
4. What does the underlined part “a niche hobby” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. A hobby that takes much time to do.
B. A hobby that is enjoyed by the rich.
C. A hobby that interests only young people.
D. A hobby that is taken up by few people.
5. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about reading?
A. Its methods. B. Its history. C. Its value. D. Its principles.
6. What can we know from paragraph 3?
A. Books can promote a sense of belonging.
B. Libraries are more commonly seen in primary schools.
C. Library problems are taken seriously by governments.
D. Books in the library should be related to academic subjects.
7. Why are a boy and his mother mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To present the author’s achievements.
B. To show that libraries are necessary.
C. To promote good parent-child relationships.
D. To urge parents to read for their children.
C
Most people are familiar with the feeling of being torn out of heavy sleep by the sound of their alarm clock. But why do we feel fresh and fully rested on some mornings, while on other days we barely have the energy to turn off the alarm clock?
Scientists have carried out a study involving 833 adults. The results indicate that we can control how fresh we feel in the morning. In the sleep research, the subjects wore special watches that monitored their physical activity and the quantity and quality of their sleep. They were also served different breakfasts, and then through the day the scientists monitored their blood glucose (葡萄糖) levels while the participants kept a chart of their energy levels through the day. Many of the subjects were twins, helping to rule out genetic (基因的) differences.
The data revealed that the secret behind energetic mornings is a three-stage solution involving plenty of exercise the previous day, sufficient sleep, and then the right breakfast.
The worst breakfast proved to be food with high sugar content; this made the participants feel sleepy and low on energy for the rest of the day. The best way to start a new day was to eat breakfast with a high content of whole grains and vegetables. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the quantity of sleep was also a key factor in mood. The results demonstrated that 7 — 9 hours of sleep are necessary to shake off morning sleepiness. Scientists do not yet know why exercise seems to improve our awareness and ability to wake up re-energized. But they emphasize that exercise is an important key to our health and mood in general.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of this text?
A. By asking a question, B. By giving an explanation.
C. By analyzing an example. D. By presenting an assumption.
9. Why were many twins chosen to be participants in the study?
A. To better understand the participants. B. To find the effect of genes on sleep.
C. To make the study more interesting. D. To avoid the impact of genes on the result.
10. Which factor can cause you feel fresher in the morning according to the text?
A. Getting plenty of sleep. B. Having a good mood the previous day.
C. Eating something rich in sugar and grains. D. Taking exercise in the morning.
11. In which section of a newspaper can we find this text?
A. Society. B. Lifestyle. C. Education. D. Sports.

Thanks to its extensive network of bike lanes (车道), in 2015, Minneapolis became the first place in America to win a place on the Copenhagenize Index, a list of the world’s 20 most bicycle-friendly cities. Yet that was not enough to save the city’s 13-year-old docked (有泊位的) bikeshare system. In March, Lyft, the taxi firm which operated the project, known as Nice Ride, announced that because a sponsor had dropped out, it would close, and that they would begin removing the equipment.
Cycling is booming (激增) across America. Bikeshare projects, too, have been developing successfully. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, usage of six of the largest docked systems nationwide increased by 42% from March 2020 to March 2023. In 2022, New Yorkers took about 30 million rides on the Citi Bike project there; in Chicago, the Divvy project had 6.3 million riders, up nearly 40% on 2021. However, many projects, like that in Minneapolis, are closing. In2019, 109 cities were served by a docked-bicycle-hire project; that has now fallen to 56. What is going wrong?
The basic problem is that the boom, funded by venture capital (风险资本), is decreasing like a broken tyre. Dockless-bike firms were the first to go. But docked projects are now suffering too, especially outside the biggest cities. In Minneapolis, the fact that the bikes did not work well during winter may have contributed to the disappearance of this project.
Projects like New York’s or Chicago’s are not at risk of closure. But bike advocates accuse Lyft, which runs those two systems, of not maintaining non-electrified bikes in order to push riders onto pricier e-bikes. For nonmembers, hiring an e-bike can equal the cost of a taxi. While demand stays high, that might sustain networks. But it will hardly contribute to the boom. Lyft should find a solution that can satisfy the customers, as well as itself.
12. Why did the project Nice Ride fail?
A. Its equipment was out-of-date. B. Its bike lanes were in bad condition.
C. It lost financial support. D. It couldn’t meet the needs of the locals.
13. What difficulty did shared bikes in Minneapolis face?
A. Its bad performance in winter. B. The intense competition.
C. The unreasonable charge. D. The lack of convenient parking docks.
14 What is the author’s attitude towards Lyft’s deed?
A. Respectful. B. Appreciative. C. Unconcerned. D. Critical.
15. What can be the best title for this text?
A. America’s Public Transportation B. The Decline of Bike-Sharing in America:
C. The Future of Bike-Sharing D. People’s Demands for Bike-Sharing

Gerry loved to read stories before bed. He was a good reader and had plenty of books that he could read to himself. Reading on his own was fun, but Gerry also liked listening to his parents read books aloud. That way he could hear the stories in the thick books that he wasn’t yet able to read. Meanwhile, the shared experience of storytelling created a warm and comforting atmosphere that stayed with him long after the tales ended. Gerry felt truly loved and cherished in those precious moments, surrounded by the magic of storytelling and the bond between parents and children.
If you asked him who was a better reader, Gerry would say that he liked both his parents equally. That was true. He loved Mom and Dad both very much. But deep down, Gerry felt that Dad was just a little bit better at reading stories because he always made different voices for each character. Gerry thought that this made the books more exciting.
But Dad wasn’t always home to read to Gerry before bedtime. Gerry’s dad worked for a big company that had offices all around the world, so Dad had to travel a lot. When he was gone, Gerry felt very sad. Mom still read books at night, but it wasn’t quite the same. Sometimes Gerry went to bed without a story at all, just to get to sleep faster and get that much closer to the day they would pick Dad up at the airport. Understanding Gerry’s feelings well, Mom made efforts to comfort Gerry during Dad’s absence.
One night, Gerry felt sad because Dad was in London and would be there for two months. That was longer than any trips that came before.
Just as Gerry was about to turn off the light switch and pull the covers up to his chin, Mom knocked on the door gently, “Gerry, I have a surprise for you.”
Mom came into the room and handed Gerry her phone. Gerry was surprised. Normally Mom’s phone was off limits, and there was no screen time after supper. “Take a look,” Mom encouraged.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Gerry took the phone and looked at the screen with curiosity.

【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. B

14. What is the author’s attitude towards Lyft’s deed?
A. Respectful. B. Appreciative. C. Unconcerned. D. Critical.
15. What can be the best title for this text?
A. America’s Public Transportation B. The Decline of Bike-Sharing in America:
C. The Future of Bike-Sharing D. People’s Demands for Bike-Sharing
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. B

【14题详解】

【15题详解】

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Gerry took the phone and looked at the screen with curiosity.

“Dad, can we meet on the phone every night?” asked Gerry eagerly.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Gerry took the phone and looked at the screen with curiosity. There was Dad! “Hi, Gerry!” Dad said. “Can you hear me all the way from Japan?” “Yes!” said Gerry. Something exciting happened. Dad held up a thick book with a dark blue cover. “Mom packed this book in my suitcase so I could still read you a story before bed. Would you like to hear it?” “Oh, yes!” said Gerry. With the phone propped up on the pillow, Gerry could hear Dad make all the different voices for the story’s characters. It was almost just as good as having Dad here in person.
“Dad, can we meet on the phone every night?”asked Gerry eagerly. “Of course!” Dad said. And he turned the page to begin the next chapter of the story. From then on, Mom and Dad took turns to read stories to Gerry before bedtime, and Gerry felt very satisfied. Two months later, Dad returned from the business trip in London, bringing back more storybooks for Gerry. Gerry hugged his father tightly and excitedly said, “Finally, we can get rid of our phones. Tonight, you can sit next to my bed and read me stories.”
