Diane Wilson In December 2019, Diane Wilson won a landmark case against Formosa Plastics, one of the world’s largest plastic companies, for getting rid of poisonous plastic waste illegally on Texas’ Gulf Coast. The $50 million settlement is the largest award in a citizen suit against an industrial polluter in the history of the US Clean Water Act. As a part of the settlement, Formosa Plastics agreed to stop throwing away plastic waste and fund remediation (补救) of affected local wetlands, beaches, and waterways. Delima Silalahi Delima Silalahi led a campaign to secure legal control of 17,824 acres of tropical (热带的) forest land for six indigenous communities in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Her community’s activism reclaimed this territory from a pulp (纸浆) and paper company. The six communities have begun restoring the forests, creating valuable carbon sinks of biodiverse Indonesian tropical forest. Tero Mustonen Since April 2018, Tero Mustonen has led the restoration of 62 severely destroyed former industrial peat (泥炭) mining and forestry sites throughout Finland—totaling 86,000 acres—and transformed them into productive, biodiverse wetlands and habitats. Rich in organic matter, peatlands are highly effective carbon sinks. Roughly one-third of Finland’s surface area is made up of peatlands. Alessandra Korap Munduruku Alessandra Korap Munduruku organised community efforts to stop mining development by British mining company Anglo American in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest. In May 2021, the company formally committed itself to withdrawing 27 approved research applications to mine inside indigenous territories, including the Sawré Muybu Indigenous Territory, which contains more than 400,000 acres of rainforest. The decision protects a critically threatened area of the Amazon from further mining and deforestation. 1. Who filed a suit against a company? A. Diane Wilson. B. Tero Mustonen. C. Delima Silalahi. D. Alessandra Korap Munduruku. 2. Which of the following was Tero Mustonen devoted to? A. Promoting the industrial peat mining. B. Repairing the damage done to peatlands. C. Restoring biodiverse wetlands and habitats. D. Controlling the development of carbon stores. 3. What can we infer about the people mentioned in the text? A They are highly creative. B. They are very considerate. C. They are human rights activists. D. They are environmental defenders. B For Mireille Kamariza, a graduate student at one of the world’s top universities, the fight against tuberculosis (TB) (结核病), which sickens nearly 10 million people a year, is not just about scientific progress and reputation. It’s personal. Kamariza grew up in the small African country of Burundi, where many around her were stricken with TB. In Burundi, it’s rare for girls to attend college. “Science was something that Europeans and Americans did,” she says. “It was for other people — not for me.” “I never dreamt Kamariza would become a scientist because it is a career path that is unknown in Burundi,” says Denise Sinankwa, Kamariza’s mother. She and her husband were raising four kids, and Sinankwa often did multiple jobs to feed the family. But Sinankwa still pushed Kamariza to do well in school. She wanted her daughter to land a good-paying job and be able to support herself. When Kamariza was 17, she went to San Diego, US, in the fall of 2006 with her brothers. They took various jobs at grocery stores, restaurants and shops. At San Diego Mesa College, she met Saloua Saidane, her chemistry teacher, who was a fellow French-speaking African. “She started my journey into science. She really pushed me and kept motivating me and telling me I should aim high. Whatever she told me, I did,” says Kamariza. She is now a graduate student at Stanford University. Kamariza wanted to focus on infectious disease. So she started brainstorming with her partner, another graduate student, to figure out a quicker way to diagnose TB. They eventually came up with a new test that recognises a sugar, called trehalose, that is only found in TB bacteria (细菌). Current TB tests take a lot of time and effort and are not very sensitive—some infections are missed. TB cultures are more reliable but take six weeks to produce a result. Kamariza’s methods could make TB diagnoses simpler and more accurate. In 2018, Harvard offered Kamariza a position in its Society of Fellows. “I’m the first black woman biologist at the society,” she says. “At that point, it’s not about me any more. It’s what I represent.” 4. What can we infer about Denise Sinankwa? A. She once got infected with TB. B. She dreamt about being a scientist. C. She valued her daughter’s education. D. She encouraged her kids to study science. 5. What does Kamariza say about Saloua Saidane? A. Saidane had a big influence on her. B. Saidane seldom spoke highly of her. C. Saidane had unrealistic expectations. D. Saidane was unfriendly to her students. 6. Why did Kamariza work with her partner? A. To shorten the time used to cure TB. B. To produce more reliable TB cultures. C. To develop a faster test to diagnose TB. D. To figure out the bacteria leading to TB. 7. What can we learn from Kamariza’s experience? A. Luck often plays a vital part in scientific research. B. We should pursue our passions despite difficulties. C. Hard work does not necessarily pay off eventually. D. Scientific progress and the reputation matter equally. C “Help!” “Land here!” “Conserve resources!” “Get off!” “My fruits are ready to eat!” These are just some of the many messages we know plants can send. To react to the environment, a single plant must communicate among its roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Instead of signals moving through a nervous system like ours, Simon Gilroy, a professor of botany at University of Wisconsin-Madison, says in plants, it’s more like plumbing (管路系统). Electrical signals travel through the movement of chemicals in those tubes, explains Courtney Jahn, a biologist who studies plant interactions. For example, roots can detect drought and tell leaves to limit transpiration (蒸腾作用) and conserve water. Researchers can observe this electrical communication by placing devices in two different places on a plant. We’ve even made instruments that can translate that electric charge into sounds we can hear. If a plant is wounded, electrical signals come out of that wound, Gilroy says. And plants can pass these electrical signals between individuals if they are touching. Researchers found that with special microphones that detect bat calls, you can hear plants, too. They are listening to these sounds to find new methods to diagnose, treat, and monitor plants without touching them. As humans, we may not be able to naturally hear them, but we can often smell plant messages. When grass is cut, it releases chemicals—a signal of asking for help. This smelly signal belongs to a group of chemicals called volatiles, which can travel far as gases both above and below ground. Each plant species has their own special volatile compounds. Natalia Dudareva, biochemist at Purdue University, says these volatile compounds have many different functions. Volatiles can draw in pollinators (传粉昆虫) when a flower is ready, and even direct them to flowers, while some are sent from leaves to deter animals that feed on only plants. So, next time you walk on some grass or pick a flower, remember that the poor injured plant might be screaming out to its neighbours. 8. Why is the example given in Paragraph 2? A. To clarify how chemicals travel in a plant. B. To describe how roots of a plant work well. C. To confirm a plant has a nervous system. D. To show a plant can communicate internally. 9. How do plants pass electrical signals to others? A. By using their wounds. B. By touching each other. C. By detecting electric charge. D. By changing them into sounds. 10. What does the underlined word “deter” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Preserve. B. Attract. C. Drive away. D. Turn to. 11. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Secret Language of Plants B. The Incredible Power of Nature C. The Value of Interacting with Wildlife D. The Trick of Getting Along with Nature D It sounds like something from a sci-fi movie, but the newly revealed device uses the contrast between shadow and light to create an electric current. That current can power small electronic devices, such as a digital watch or LED lights. “By using shade, we can harvest energy anywhere on Earth, not just in open spaces,” says Swee Ching Tan, a materials scientist in the National University of Singapore. Someday, these generators might produce energy in shadowy spots between skyscrapers, he says, or even indoors. Tan and his team call their new device a shadow-effect energy generator. They made it by coating silicon (硅) with a thin layer of gold. Each device measures 4 centimetres long and 2 centimetres wide. Electrons (电子) are one of the particles that make up atoms. They have a negative electric charge. As in a solar cell, light shining on this generator energises electrons in the silicon. Those electrons then jump into the gold. Voltage (电压) is a measure of electrical potential energy, a type of energy related to an object’s condition. Light boosts the voltage of the lit metal, making it higher than that in the dark part of the generator. Electrons flow from high to low voltage. So the difference in light levels creates an electric current. Sending electrons through a circuit makes a flow of current that can power a small electronic device. The team compared its generators to commercial solar cells that are typically used under full sunlight. With half of each device in shadow, the generators produced roughly twice as much power per surface area as the solar cells. But when the whole device is in shadow, the amount of electricity generated is very low or none at all. Increasing how much light the generator s can absorb would allow them to make better use of shadows. While the research conducted by Swe e Ching Tan’s team has limitations, it opens the door to the development of wearable devices attached to clothing to harvest energy during normal daily activities, as well as low-cost panels for efficient harvesting of energy from indoor lighting. 12. What do we know about the new device? A. It can generate electricity. B. It is inspired by a sci-fi movie. C. It can give off light in shadow. D. It hardly works in open spaces. 13. What is the third paragraph mainly about? A. The features of the new device. B. The workings of the new device. C. The causes of energy production. D. The roles of electrons and voltages. 14. What can be inferred about the new device in Paragraph 4? A. It works as well as the solar cells. B. It has a promising commercial future. C. It is ready to be put into use immediately. D. It needs improvement in its performance. 15. What is the author’s attitude towards Swee Ching Tan’s research? A Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Approving. D. Intolerant. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Are there life lessons in swimming? Swimming is so much more than just about the stroke or a good kick. ___16___ What might it say then? •Be patient with the things you want to learn. Swimming is very technical and requires lots of practice of drills and skills. This requires patience and no matter how talented you are, you won’t master swimming within a week. Regardless of your swimming proficiency (熟练), you will always have something to learn. This makes swimming amazing yet disappointing. There is always the next step, just like in life. ___17___ •You learn how to deal with failure and setbacks. It’s not always going to be fair. And things won’t always go our way. There will be times when no matter how hard we work, the results don’t match our effort in practice. These moments hurt, and they make you realise you are not as good as you think you are. ___18___ To overcome. And to be humble. •___19___ Ever wonder why so many swimmers seem to have superhuman speed when it comes to relay legs? I’ve seen it so many times, from my own swimming, dropping nearly a second on my best time in the 50 m freestyle, to Jason Lezak and his otherworldly 46.0 at the Beijing Olympics—there is something that happens when you race for something besides just yourself. •Losing is as important as winning. Winning is great while losing is terrible. We can agree to that. ___20___ You will lose many times during your swimming career, but being able to lean across the lane line and shake the winner’s hand means that you conquered (战胜) yourself. Similarly, being a champion is more than just being the first swimmer to the wall—it’s being humble in victory, and setting an example for those to come. Swimming is not only a sport; it is a lifestyle. The lessons that you learn from swimming will follow you through life. A. Being a team makes everyone better. B. You do not always get what you want. C. It can also speak meaningfully into our lives. D. But they also teach you how to be mentally tough. E. It teaches you to be mindful of the process and not to rush things. F. But I believe that how we do both matters more than the outcome. G. You need to adopt the daily routines and habits that will get you there. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 I always knew I’d been adopted shortly after birth. While I was very ___23___ them, I often found myself wondering about my birth parents. There wasn’t a part of me that ___24___ them for the decisions they’d made. But I was ___25___ to know whether we shared anything in common. At 18, I wrote to the adoption agency to try and find my birth parents; ___26___, my letter sank like a lead balloon. Then two years later, in 1986, the law changed to ___27___ New Zealand residents over 20 who’d been adopted to find their birth families, so I set about getting a copy of my birth certificate. ___28___, I was able to locate my biological parents, who’d moved to Australia soon after I was born. They got a ___29___ when they received my call and agreed passionately to come and meet. Just a week later, they flew to where I lived. Surprisingly, I was able to ___30___ them at first sight. “We had an exceptionally ___31___ life, your dad and I unemployed when you were born, so we had no ___32___,” said Mum. But they admitted they’d always felt ___33___ about giving me up. “I can ___34___ you and there is no need to think that way,” I smiled. Spending the next two weeks getting to know one another, I finally felt like I ___35___. I must be the luckiest woman on earth, I thought. 21. A. cautious B. curious C. uneasy D. open 22. She checked the clock and it was only five minutes until closing time. She was more than ready to go home, so she decided not to receive the old man. “We’ve already closed. Come back on Monday,” she told him. The old man refused to leave. “Please, ma’am. I need to send this package. I walked 4 miles in the rain to get here,” he begged. Brenda sighed and then asked the man to fill in the form. She noticed his hands shaking and his writing was impossible to read. “Sir, write more clearly!” she yelled. Brenda stared at the clock. She was worried. She would be late to pick her child up from school, so she stepped outside and gave her husband a call. Brenda was shivering (颤抖) from the cold. The old man came up to her and took his worn coat off and offered it to her. “It’s cold here. Use my coat to warm you,” he said kindly. Brenda looked at the man and saw that underneath the coat, he only had a thin V-neck shirt on. Then she noticed he had a pacemaker—a device that regulates a person’s heartbeat. It was the same as her late father used to have, too. She realised she had been rude to somebody who was her father’s age. Brenda looked at the old man with sympathy. She realised she had taken out all of her anger on him, even though he did not deserve it. “Sir, what is your name? Come, let’s process your package,” she said. “Thank you, dear. My name is William,” he replied as they walked inside together. “My daughter turns 50 tomorrow. I want to get her something special because it’s difficult for me to visit her. I saved up for it, and I’m worried it won’t arrive on time,” he added. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Brenda knew that it was already too late for the package to arrive the next day. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ They walked towards her car, and she asked William to get in the car. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2024年普通高等学校招生考前第三次模拟卷 英语 (考试时间:120分钟;试卷满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? She checked the receiver’s address that William had written own. It was two hours away, “I hate to break it to you, sir, but this package would arrive late if we process it here. We’ve already sent out our next-day delivery packages. This would be delivered in two days.” Brenda told him, William’s face formed a frown, and he sighed in defeat. Brenda started to pack up, handing the box back to William. She got her bag and asked her colleague to lock up the post office. “Come with me.” she told him. They walked towards her car, and she asked William to get in the car. “Where are we going?” he asked her. “We’re going to your daughter’s house to celebrate this milestone birthday with her in person,” Brenda said with a smile. They drove two hours to get to the lady’s house, and Brenda couldn’t hold back her tears when she saw the happy daughter was reunited with her dad. There was a feast for Brenda and William to enjoy that night.
