故选A。 根据Ringwood's International Festival of Street Performance Art (RIFSPA)中第一句“Held annually on March 15th from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.(每年3月15日上午10:30—下午4:30举行)”可知,RIFSPA每年举办一次。 根据Natural Wellbeing (NW)中第二句“Participants can be involved in cooking and sharing an outdoor lunch, bird watching and outdoor craft activities.(参与者可以参与烹饪和分享户外午餐、观鸟和户外手工活动)”和Ringwood Health Walks (RHW)中第一句“Guided by Volunteer Walk Leaders , Walks are FREE for anyone wishing to improve their fitness with one-hour walks.(在志愿者步行领导的指导下,任何希望通过一小时步行来提高身体素质的人都可以免费步行)”可知,NW 和 RHW都提供锻炼的机会。故选C。 B Living beyond limits Growing up in the hot Las Vegas desert, all I wanted was to be free. I would daydream about traveling the world, living in a place where it snowed. At the age of 19, the day after I graduated from high school, I moved to a place where it snowed and I found my dream job. For the first time in my life, I felt free, independent and completely in control of my life. That is, until my life took a detour (转折点) . I went home from work early one day with what I thought was the flu, and less than 24 hours later I was in the hospital on life support with less than a 2% chance of living. Over the course of two and a half months I lost the hearing in my left ear and both of my legs below the knee. I thought the worst was over until weeks later when I saw my new artificial legs for the first time. They were so painful that all I could think was, how am I ever going to travel the world in these things? And how was I going to snowboard again? But I knew that in order to move forward, I had to let go of the old Self and learn to embrace the new Self. And that is when it dawned on me that if I snowboarded again, my feet aren’t going to get cold. Four months later I was back up on a snowboard, although things didn’t go quite as expected: My knees and my ankles wouldn’t bend. But I knew that I would be able to do this again if I could find the right pair of feet. I did a year of research, still couldn’t figure out what kind of legs to use. So I decided to make a pair myself. My leg maker and I put random parts together and we made a pair of feet that I could snowboard in. Then in 2005 I cofounded a nonprofit organization for youth with physical disabilities so they could get involved with action sports. Eleven years ago, when I lost my legs, I had no idea what to expect. But if you ask me today, if I would ever want to change my situation, I would have to say no. Because my legs haven’t disabled me. They’ve forced me to rely on my imagination and to believe in the possibilities. 4. How did the author feel when she saw her new legs for the first time? A. Astonished. B. Hopeful. C. Desperate. D. Delighted. 5. What mainly helped the author change her thought toward her situation? A. Her positive attitude. B. Inspiration from research. C. Her love for snowboard. D. Help from a nonprofit organization. 6. The author’s attempt could help her and other youths with physical disabilities to ______. A. travel around the world B. take part in action sports C. bend their knees and ankles D. recover from their disabilities 7. What can we learn from the passage? A Practice makes perfect. B. Actions speak louder than words. C. You can’t judge a book by its cover. D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart 【答案】4. C 5. A 6. B 7. 根据文章第三段“I thought the worst was over until weeks later when I saw my new artificial legs for the first time. They were so painful that all I could think was, how am I ever going to travel the world in these things? And how was I going to snowboard again?(我以为最糟糕的时候已经过去了,直到几周后我第一次看到我的新假肢。 根据文章第四段“But I knew that in order to move forward, I had to let go of the old Self and learn to embrace the new Self. And that is when it dawned on me that if I snowboarded again, my feet aren’t going to get cold.(但我知道,为了向前走,我必须放弃旧的自我,学会拥抱新的自我。 故选A。 根据文章第六段“Then in 2005 I cofounded a nonprofit organization for youth with physical disabilities so they could get involved with action sports. D“Nothing is impossible to a willing heart(有志者事竟成)”最符合文章的主旨。故选D。 C You have probably heard of the Mozart effect. It’s the idea that if children or even babies listen to music composed of Mozart they will become more intelligent. A quick Internet search shows plenty of products to assist you in the task. Whatever your age, there are CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozart’s music, but when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed. The phrase “the Mozart effect” was made up in 1991, but it was a study described two years later in the journal Nature that aroused real media and public interest about the idea that listening to classical music somehow improves the brain. It is one of those ideas that sound reasonable. Mozart was no doubt a genius himself; his music is complex and there is a hope that if we listen to enough of it, we’ll become more intelligent. The idea took off, with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children, and in 1998 Zell Miller, the Governor of the state of Georgia in the USA, even asked for money to be set aside in the state budget so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classical music. It was not just babies and children who were exposed to (接触) Mozart’s music on purpose, even an Italian farmer proudly explained that the cows were played Mozart three times a day to help them to produce better milk. I’ll leave the debate on the effect on milk production to farmers, but what about the evidence that listening to Mozart makes people more intelligent? More research was carried out but an analysis of 16 different studies confirmed that listening to music does lead to a temporary (临时的) improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it doesn’t make us more intelligent. 8. What can we learn from Paragraph 1? A. Mozart composed many musical pieces for children. B. Children listening to Mozart will be more intelligent. C. There are few products on the Internet about Mozart’s music. D There is little scientific evidence to support the Mozart effect. 9. The underlined phrase in Paragraph 3 suggests that ________. A. People were strongly against the idea. B. the idea was accepted by many people. C. Mozart played an important part in people’s life. D. the US government helped promote the idea. 10. What’s the author’s attitude towards the Mozart effect? A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Positive. 11. What is the best title for the passage? A. Listening to Mozart, necessary? B. What music is beneficial? C. What is the Mozart effect? D. To be or not to be? D 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第一段的句子“Whatever your age, there are CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozart’s music, but when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed.(无论你的年龄多大,都有CD和书籍帮助你感受莫扎特音乐的力量,但当涉及到它能让你更聪明的科学证据时,情况就复杂多了)”推知,几乎没有科学证据支持莫扎特效应。 根据划线短语后面的部分“with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children, and in 1998 Zell Miller, the Governor of the state of Georgia in the USA, even asked for money to be set aside in the state budget so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classical music.(成千上万的父母为他们的孩子播放莫扎特音乐,1998年,美国佐治亚州州长泽尔·米勒甚至要求在州预算中拨出一笔钱,这样每个新生儿都能收到一张古典音乐的CD )”可知,这种想法一定很流行,才会有成千上万的父母为他们的孩子播放莫扎特音乐的现象,所以划线短语took off的意义为“突然成功或流行起来”。 根据最后一段“I’ll leave the debate on the effect on milk production to farmers, but what about the evidence that listening to Mozart makes people more intelligent?More research was carried out but an analysis of 16 different studies confirmed that listening to music does lead to a temporary (临时的) improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it doesn’t make us more intelligent.(我将把关于牛奶生产影响的辩论留给农民,但证明听莫扎特的音乐会让人更聪明的证据呢? 通读全文,并根据第一段的“You have probably heard of the Mozart effect. It’s the idea that if children or even babies listen to music composed of Mozart, they will become more intelligent.(你可能听说过莫扎特效应。 和最后一段“More research was carried out but an analysis of 16 different studies confirmed that listening to music does lead to a temporary (临时的) improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it doesn’t make us more intelligent.(虽然进行了更多的研究,但对16项不同研究的分析证实,听音乐确实会暂时提高我们在心理上处理形状的能力,但这种好处是短暂的,不会让我们变得更聪明)”可知,文章主要讨论了听莫扎特的音乐究竟会不会让人变得更聪明。所以A项“Listening to Mozart, necessary?” 故选A项。 D Being bored is no fun, especially at work. However, a recent study from the Research School of Management at the Australian National University suggests that boredom may have an unexpected benefit. In a study, 52 participants (参与者) were given a boring task of separating red from green beans for 30 minutes, while another group of 49 participants was asked to create art projects with paper, beans, and glue. Then both groups were instructed to spend five minutes on a creative task. Surprisingly, the group that had performed the boring task produced a higher quantity and quality of creative ideas than the group that had taken part in the art project. “Boredom is not necessarily terrible based on my research,” says the study’s lead author, Guihyun Park. “People want to get out of a boring state, so they tend to find novelty, which can lead to unique thinking and bring out creativity.” Moreover, it’s also worth noting that studies have found that not everyone experiences the same level of creative benefits from boredom. Researchers have discovered in one experiment that participants who are open to new experiences and driven to achieve specific goals are more likely to see positive effects from being bored. Finally, Park admits that not every type of job allows a state of boredom, and it really can be detrimental to some important work. “I would say at safety jobs where you need to stay alert (警惕的) all the time, like police or safety guards, boredom will keep your mind wandering, which is really bad,” says Park. “Also, those jobs require less creativity but much attention to details instead; boredom won’t help much there.” But for designers and anyone in a creative field, boredom is not something to fear, but to embrace J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, has shared how she would spend hours sitting on trains, letting her mind wander and coming up with new ideas for her stories. This boredom allowed her to tap into her creativity and imagination, leading to one of the most beloved book series ever. 12. What did the recent study find about boredom? A. It inspires creative ideas. B. It raises people’s patience. C. It improves work efficiency. D. It leads to negative feelings. 13. Which kind of people are more likely to benefit from boredom? A. People who are afraid of change. B. People who tend to focus on details. C. People who are willing to try new things. D. People who enjoy competing with others. 14. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Attractive. B. Harmful. C. Necessary. D. Challenging. 15. Why does the author mention J.K. Rowling in the last paragraph? A. To show the power of embracing boredom. B. To encourage people to stay bored in their daily life. C. To prove the importance of creativity and imagination. D. To explain the creation process of the Harry Potter series. A 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第一段中的“However, a recent study from the Research School of Management at the Australian National University suggests that boredom may have an unexpected benefit.(然而,澳大利亚国立大学管理研究学院最近的一项研究表明,无聊可能会带来意想不到的好处。)”和第二段中的“Surprisingly, the group that had performed the boring task produced a higher quantity and quality of creative ideas than the group that had taken part in the art project.(令人惊讶的是,完成这项无聊任务的小组比参加艺术项目的小组产生了更高数量和质量的创意。)” 故选A。 根据第三段中的“Researchers have discovered in one experiment that participants who are open to new experiences and driven to achieve specific goals are more likely to see positive effects from being bored.(研究人员在一项实验中发现,对新体验持开放态度并致力于实现特定目标的参与者更有可能从无聊中看到积极的影响。)” 根据画线词所在句中的“not every type of job allows a state of boredom”可知,前面说不是所有类型的工作都允许无聊,由此可知,这里“it really can be detrimental to some important work”指无聊会对一些重要工作产生不好的影响,再根据下文中的“I would say at safety jobs where you need to stay alert (警惕的) all the time, like police or safety guards, boredom will keep your mind wandering, which is really bad(我想说,在需要时刻保持警惕的安全工作中,比如警察或保安,无聊会让你走神,这真的很糟糕)”可知,这里表示的是无聊会对一些重要工作造成危害。 根据最后一段第一句“But for designers and anyone in a creative field, boredom is not something to fear, but to embrace (欣然接受).(但对于设计师和创意领域的任何人来说,无聊不是一件值得害怕的事情,而是一件值得拥抱的事情。)” Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, has shared how she would spend hours sitting on trains, letting her mind wander and coming up with new ideas for her stories. This boredom allowed her to tap into her creativity and imagination, leading to one of the most beloved book series ever.(《哈利·波特》系列的作者J.K. 讲述了J.K. 故选A。 Simple Ways to Improve Your Written English There are many different aspects of learning English such as listening, speaking and writing. I would daydream about traveling the world, living in a place where it snowed. At the age of 19 the day after I graduated from high school, I moved to a place where it snowed and I found my dream job. A. Practice makes perfect. B. Actions speak louder than words. C. You can’t judge a book by its cover. D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart C You have probably heard of the Mozart effect. It’s the idea that if children or even babies listen to music composed of Mozart, they will become more intelligent. D. There is little scientific evidence to support the Mozart effect. D Being bored is no fun, especially at work.
