He was very naughty. Sometimes he chased the swans and when he caught them, he pulled their feathers off. The swans were all very afraid of him. One day Nils was studying at home when suddenly he fell asleep. When he woke up, he saw in the mirror—a tiny Nils! He had become only a little thumb toy figure! But once he opened the door, he found all of swans circling around them. They chased him. They pinched (掐) him and laughed and said, “Now it is time for you to fear us!” Then the wild swans flew in and saw their ancestors and said, “Hey, come on! Let us all go to beautiful Switzerland!” A male swan named Max heard the wild swans, so he scooped up high into the sky. Nils found this good chance to experience new things, and held on tight to Max’s neck. They both flew high above into the sky. Nils was very scared, so he didn’t open his eyes at first. At last he got the courage to open his eyes and look down. He saw the white clouds high up the air, and saw the black earth under the ground. Max’s energy left him behind, so he fell behind the group. Max flapped his wings quickly and quickly, but he still felt down and down. Nils was very worried, so at first he said, “Don’t worry, Max. You rest for a while and let’s go home!” Max liked his comfort, so he quickly caught up with the group. The leader of the swans whose name was Oscar saw Nils and asked him, “Who are you?” Nils stood up and said: “My name is Nils. I was a human yesterday, but this morning…” Before Nils could finish his words, all the wild swans took a few steps back. Humans had been the swan’s enemy for centuries! No matter how hard Max tried to let Oscar agree to let Nils stay with them, Oscar still agreed to just let him stay with them for one night. When they all slept snugly that night, a fox crept out behind a tree. He had kept his eyes on the wild swans for a while, and still thought of their delicious meat even as they slept. Oscar sensed this and told all the swans to get up and fly away to a safer place. But Max left too quickly and dropped Nils down on the ground. Nils did not get hurt, but he did see the fox carrying the swan between his jaws. Nils shouted to him, “Hey, put the swan down!” He quickly grabbed the fox’s tail and pinched it with all his strength. This move allowed the fox to scream and so dropped the swan out of his mouth. Oscar said to Nils, “You are the first person to do good to a swan. So you can stay with us for the rest of the journey.” 29. What happened to Nils after he woke up? A. He became a member of the swans. B. He lost his little thumb as a tiny boy. C. He had wings and joined the journey of the swans. D. He became smaller, the same size as a little thumb. 30. Why did the swans say “Now it is time for you to fear us!” ? A. Because they were in groups and circling around Nils. B. Because they hated Nils and wanted to punish him now. C. Because they became brave and were not afraid of Nils any more. D. Because Nils was smaller than before and they could make fun of him now. 31. In which order did swans change their feelings towards Nils? ① Oscar thanked Nils for his kindness. ② Max took Nils to the sky though tired. ③ Oscar thought of humans as the swans’ enemy. ④ Nils pulled swans’ feather off and made swans afraid. ⑤ Nils comforted Max and saved the swan from the fox. C When considering the kind of experience that makes life better, most people first think that happiness depends on experiencing pleasure: good food, good jobs, all the comforts that money can buy. If we couldn’t have these, we might as well sit in front of the television on a quiet evening. Pleasure is an important part of the quality of life, but by itself it doesn’t bring happiness. When people think further about what makes a worthy life, they tend (倾向于) to move beyond pleasant memories and begin to remember other events, other experiences that overlap (有重叠) pleasurable ones but fall into a group with a separate name: enjoyment. Enjoyable events take place when people have not only satisfied a need or met some earlier expectation, but also achieved something unexpected. Enjoyment is characterized by a sense of curiosity, of achievement. Playing a tennis game that improves one’s ability is enjoyable, as is reading a book that shows things in a new light, as is having a conversation that leads us to express ideas we didn’t know we had. None of these experiences may be especially pleasurable when they are taking place, but when we think back on them afterwards, we would say, “That really was fun” and wish they would happen again. After an enjoyable event we know that we have changed, and grown. Experiences that give pleasure can also give enjoyment, but the two feelings are quite different. For example, everybody takes pleasure in eating. However, to enjoy food is more difficult — you have to pay enough attention to a meal, so as to sense and tell its various tastes. As this example suggests, we can experience pleasure without any psychic energy, while enjoyment happens only as a result of full attention. A person can feel pleasure without any effort, as long as certain parts in his brain are stimulated (刺激). But it’s impossible to enjoy a tennis game or a book without full attention. It’s for this reason that pleasure does not last long, nor does it make us grow. Growth requires full attention to goals that are new, that are relatively challenging. Without enjoyment, life will go on, and it can even be pleasant. But it depends heavily on luck and the external (外部的) environment. To achieve personal control over the quality of experience, however, we need to learn how to build enjoyment into what happens day in, day out. 33. You will most probably experience enjoyment when you ________. A. buy expensive shoes B. order a delicious meal C. talk with friends for new ideas D. sit quietly in front of a television 34. What do you know about pleasure and enjoyment from the passage? A. Enjoyment grows out of pleasure. B. Pleasure and enjoyment come hand in hand. C. Pleasurable experiences are part of enjoyable ones. D. Some experiences provide both pleasure and enjoyment. 35. The words “psychic energy” in Paragraph 4 are closest in meaning to ________. A. attention B. interest C. ability D. knowledge 36. The writer probably agrees that ________. A. feeling pleasure stops people from achieving growth B. feeling enjoyment comes with achieving growth C. a worthy life depends on luck and environment D. pleasure is the key to a happy and worthy life D Mandarin (普通话) Connects My Children to Their Heritage Growing up in America as a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants (移民), I was used to straddling (横跨) two worlds. But as I grew older, the Chinese side lost ground, inch by inch. While I happily accepted the bills in red envelopes that adults gave to children for Lunar New Year, I didn’t feel connected to the culture. Before my children were born, I had already decided that I would teach them Mandarin. I felt that they should be able to speak the language of their grandparents, the first language their mother met. Parenting books advised narrating your actions while with your baby, so I started digging out long-buried words: “ball,” “eat,” “sleep,” “play.” However, as this exercise continued, the gaps in my Mandarin became more obvious. One morning, when my daughter asked “What is the word for ‘arm’?” I panicked. Had I already reached the boundaries of my knowledge? Luckily, these days the ready availability of Chinese language media—from books to television shows to music—is a much-needed tool to parents like me. The first time I stepped into the local library in my Bay Area hometown, I was amazed to find a well-stocked (贮藏量多的) Chinese section. The tale of the Monkey King immediately caught my daughter's imagination. When I see my son chat with his grandfather in Mandarin or when my daughter insists on fish for Lunar New Year, the time spent reading all those books closely feels well-spent. My youngest child recited Li Bai’s “Thoughts on a Silent Night” for the Moon Festival performance at his preschool last fall. For generations of Chinese children, it’s the first piece of literature they memorize. It’s trotted out (翻出) for all occasions. My son’s voice rang out with confidence and his arms s wept up to indicate the moon above. Joy and wonder fell on my father’s face as he listened to the familiar verses from the mouth of his grandson: verses that had been spoken by my father and my grandparents when they were students in China, and by countless boys and girls before that. 37. We can learn from the first paragraph that the author ________. A. was brought up in an all-English environment B. once lost her sense of belonging to Chinese culture C. was deeply attracted by Chinese culture when she was a child D. preferred Lunar New Year to any other festival 38. The underlined word panicked means “________”. A. happy B. anxious C. excited D. surprised 39. According to the article, how did the author teach her children Mandarin? By sending them to a Chinese school in the Bay Area. By bringing them to the local library to read Chinese books. By speaking the words of her actions in Mandarin while with them. By making use of Chinese language media, such as books, television shows and music. A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④ 40. According to the article, when she realized that her children were very interested in Chinese culture, the author ________. A. felt reconnected to Chinese culture B. was full of hope for the inheritance (继承) of Chinese culture C. thought of her own experience of learning Chinese as a child D. felt that all her efforts to teach them Mandarin had been worth it 41. What’s the main idea of this article? A. Language plays an important role in passing down family traditions. B. Language and culture can connect people throughout time and space. C. Learning Chinese poems is a great way to deepen your knowledge of the Chines c language. D. Knowing the Chinese language will provide you with a better understanding of Chinese culture E 请认真阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。 请认真阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Many have heard of shark fin soup. He went to school in winter, and looked after the farm animals when it was summer. A. feeling pleasure stops people from achieving growth B. feeling enjoyment comes with achieving growth C. a worthy life depends on luck and environment D. pleasure is the key to a happy and worthy life 【答案】33. C 34. D 35. A 36. B 【解析】 【导语】本文主要讲述了快乐和享受的联系和对比。 【33题详解】 推理判断题。根据“Playing a tennis game that improves one’s ability is enjoyable, as is reading a book that shows things in a new light, as is having a conversation that leads us to express ideas we didn’t know we had.” 根据“Experiences that give pleasure can also give enjoyment, but the two feelings are quite different.”可知有些经历既能带来愉悦,又能带来享受。故选D。 【35题详解】 词义猜测题。根据“As this example suggests, we can experience pleasure without any psychic energy, while enjoyment happens only as a result of full attention.”可知正如这个例子所表明的,我们可以在没有任何精神能量的情况下体验快乐,而享受只有在全神贯注的情况下才会发生。psychic energy与attention意思相近。故选A。 【36题详解】 观点态度题。根据“Enjoyment is characterized by a sense of curiosity, of achievement.”以及“Growth requires full attention to goals that are new, that are relatively challenging.”可知作者会赞成“感到快乐与得到成长是相辅相成的”这一观点。故选B。 D Mandarin (普通话) Connects My Children to Their Heritage Growing up in America as a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants (移民), I was used to straddling (横跨) two worlds. C.
