My head was so full of digital noise that it felt like my brain was about to blow a fuse (导火线). I had no greater power of concentration than the lifeless stare of a goldfish. As a writer, I was ashamed to admit that my love of books had been compromised by a brain that simply could not sit still.
So, this year I committed myself to restoring books to the place that they held in my life before the Internet broke my brain.
My goal was 52 books: It seemed like an impossible task. A 400-page book will take the average person around eight hours to read. Finding the time to read was a challenge but here's how I did it. Firstly, I decided to treat my mind like a misbehaving child who needs some rules laid down. Then I decided that I would read for an hour or two at a time without distraction each day. It was something I hadn't done in years and it was scary how difficult it was.
In his book,The Distracted Mind, Larry Rosen says that the more we practice spending time away from our electronic devices, the calmer and more focused we become. And this is what I found. Again and again, I would gently bring myself back to the page, resisting the urge to reach for that screen. I took inspiration from Niki Gemmell, who describes in On Quiet, how investing in a safe to lock away her family's devices for long periods had opened up a space for deep reflection. For me, finding that quiet time meant finding time in my day just to read. It was like a date between me and my book. And it meant actively choosing to read at times when I normally would reach for my phone. I read on the tram, at the park, in bed at night and on lunch breaks.
By reawakening my love with books I created a sacred space where I could press pause and found inspiration knowledge, reflection and escape. In our modern world, reading is a powerful and beneficial way for us to slow down and be ourselves.
24. What was the first thing the author did to achieve the goal?
A. The author went to the bookstore to buy books.
B. The author was determined to regulate himself.
C. The author was buried in reading for an hour or two at once.
D. The author decided to get involved in reading with people around.
25. What is the author’s attitude towards electronic devices?
A. Favorable. B. Ambiguous. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.
26. What can we infer about the author?
A. The author benefited a lot from reading books.
B. The author got inspiration when he reached for the screen.
C. The author would rather read books outdoors than indoors.
D. The author was reminded to kill time with electronic devices.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Going back to the books B. Falling in love with reading
C. Escaping from the noisy world D. Resisting the urge to reach for the screen
B 25. D 26. A 27. A

Possible discovery of the first planet outside our galaxy
Signs of a planet transiting (经过) a star outside of the Milky Way galaxy may have been detected for the first time. This intriguing result, using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, opens up a new window to search for exoplanets at greater distances than ever before. The possible exoplanet candidate is located in the spiral galaxy Messier 51 (M51), also called the Whirlpool galaxy because of its distinctive profile.
“We are trying to open up a whole new arena for finding other worlds by searching for planet candidates at X-ray wavelengths, a strategy that makes it possible to discover them in other galaxies,” said Rosanne Di Stefano of the Center for Astrophysics I Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA), who led the study, which was published Monday in Nature Astronomy.
Because the region producing bright X-rays is small, a planet passing in front of it could block most or all of the X-rays, making the transit easier to spot because the X-rays can completely disappear. This could allow exoplanets to be detected at much greater distances than current optical light transit studies, which must be able to detect tiny decreases in light because the planet only blocks a tiny part of the star.
The team used this method to detect the exoplanet candidate in a binary system (双星系统) called M51-ULS-1, located in M51. This binary system contains a black hole or neutron star or biting a companion star with a mass about 20 times that of the sun. The X-ray transit they found using Chandra data lasted about three hours, during which the X-ray emission decreased to zero. Based on this and other information, the researchers estimate the exoplanet candidate in M51-ULS-1 would be roughly the size of Saturn, and orbit the neutron star or black hole at about twice Saturn’s distance from the sun.
While this is a tantalizing (引起好奇心的) study, more data would be needed to confirm the understanding as an extragalactic (银河系外的) exoplanet. One challenge is that the planet candidate’s large orbit means it would not cross in front of its binary partner again for about 70 years, thwarting (阻碍) any attempts for a confirming observation for decades.
28 What is the significance of the new finding for future study?
A. It has distinctive result.
B. It opens up exploration at longer distance.
C. It uses NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory.
D. It detects a star outside of the Milky Way for the first time.
29. According to Rosanne Di, how did they try to find exoplanets?
A. By using X-ray wavelengths to look for exoplanets.
B. By discovering exoplanets in other galaxies.
C. By opening up a whole new arena.
D. By finding other worlds.
30. What does this refer to in paragraph 4?
A. Chandra data. B. X-ray emission.
C. The decrease of X-ray. D. The X-ray transit that lasted three hours.
31. What’s the team’s future focus?
A. Thwart attempts. B. Tantalize the study.
C. Confirm observation. D. Find more information.
B 29. A 30. C 31. D

Figuring out biodiversity patterns and detecting rare or just-good-at-hiding species has long posed challenges for ecosystem monitoring and conservation efforts. Traditional survey methods are labor intensive and cover limited areas. Now, emerging environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques open new possibilities.
Scientists collect water or soil samples from an environment and extract any DNA traces left behind by organisms. This is the environmental DNA (eDNA). They then use one of the two analysis methods-quantitative PCR (qPCR)or DNA sequencing. Similar to COVID tests, qPCR is used to detect if a specific species’ DNA is in the sample. For example, researchers tested river water eDNA to see if endangered fish X was present. When it was detected, they confirmed that the fish lived in that river without directly seeing it. DNA sequencing analyzes all DNA in the sample at once. Scientists can then match the DNA barcodes to databases to identify which species were in the sampled environment.
Although eDNA sampling cannot identify new species or those only known from photos and videos if they are not already listed in the reference databases, the real power of it lies in its ability to capture a wide range of organisms. With just one sample, scientists can detect all kinds of living things, from bacteria to whales, in almost any environment where life exists, including the deep sea and underground caves. One of the most significant advantages of eDNA sampling is that it allows scientists to detect species that are difficult to see or capture. This is particularly useful when studying rare or very small species, or when working in environments like dark water where visibility is limited.
This is just the start. Imagine a future where eDNA data could be collected from the most remote oceans by autonomous vehicles, analyzed by the drone (无人机) or on board a research vessel, and integrated with other monitoring data so marine managers and the public can see near-real-time data about the condition of the ocean. Science fiction? Not any more.
32. What can we infer from paragraph 1?
A. Finding out species diversity is difficult for related scientists.
B. The previous research methods are completely depend on labor.
C. eDNA techniques could make up for some limitations posed by the traditional one.
D. eDNA techniques have already substituted traditional survey methods.
33. What’s the advantage of eDNA sampling?
A. It can detect species from photos and videos.
B. It can help scientists capture endangered species.
C. It improves adaptability to different researching environments.
D It can identify any living creature with a sample of it.
34. What could eDNA data be applied to in the future?
A. Studying microbial communities.
B. Analyzing diversity changes over time.
C. Collecting species in new environments.
D. Offering statistics for ocean supervision.
35. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. New biodiversity monitoring techniques are around the corner.
B. Traditional survey methods are abandoned for their shortcomings.
C. Rare species have been discovered with two analysis methods.
D Scientists have made a breakthrough in undersea research.
C 33. C 34. D 35. A

The first is a turbocharged version of the fast-fashion formula of offering a constantly updated range of garments at bargain-basement prices. Whereas Zara launches about 10, 000 new products a year, Shein releases 6, 000 fresh “stock-keeping units” every day.
Shein tests the new designs simultaneously (同时地) on its app. If a new design is popular, the company quickly orders more.___37___
___38___. Besides handing out products free of charge to influencers, it has recruited local designers in America and several other countries. As well as dreaming up new clothes, they market its products and backstories on social media.
The third ingredient is brilliant avoidance of geopolitical controversy. Shein wears its Chineseness lightly. Unlike other Chinese brands such as Huawei, it sells next to nothing domestically. ___39___. Western consumers assume that like most of their clothing, Shein clothing is made in Asia.
___40___. The company relies on collecting lots of data from American shoppers. Shein's Western competitors may use national security as a reason to fight against its relentless (不留情面的) rise. That would be a compliment — after a fashion.
A. Shein is a huge success.
B. Shein's success has three threads.
C. That makes them gain support from Chinese citizens.
D. That weakens its association with China in Western eyes.
E. If consumers shrug (耸肩) at the new style, no more orders are placed.

B 37. E 38. G 39. D 40. F
The creator of the fashion world's latest hit is a specialist in search-engine optimisation (最优化). This year Shein's gross merchandise value (GMV) is forecast to surpass $20 billion. By 2022 analysts expect Shein's (GMV) to overtake Zara's revenues. (许仰天于2008年创立Shein。时尚界最新热门产品的创造者是搜索引擎优化专家。今年Shein的商品总价值预计将超过200亿美元。分析师预计,到2022年,Shein的GMV收入将超过Zara。)”,这部分内容主要介绍了Shein的创始人许仰天以及公司的成功预测。因此,我们需要找到一个能总结Shein成功原因的句子。观察选项,B选项“Shein's success has three threads.”(Shein的成功有三个要点。)
根据空格前的“Shein tests the new designs simultaneously (同时地) on its app. If a new design is popular, the company quickly orders more. (Shein在其应用程序上同时测试新设计。如果一种新设计很受欢迎,公司会很快订购更多。)”可知,公司在其应用程序上同时测试新设计。如果一种新的设计很受欢迎,公司很快就会订购更多。部分内容主要描述了Shein如何通过在线测试来确定哪些设计受欢迎,并据此快速调整生产。因此,我们需要找到一个与在线测试或市场反应相关的句子。观察选项,E选项“If consumers shrug (耸肩) at the new style, no more orders are placed.”
根据空格后的句子“Besides handing out products free of charge to influencers, it has recruited local designers in America and several other countries. As well as dreaming up new clothes, they market its products and backstories on social media. (除了向有影响力的人免费发放产品外,它还在美国和其他几个国家招募了当地设计师。除了设计新衣服,他们还在社交媒体上营销其产品和背景故事。)”可知,这部分内容主要描述了Shein在销售和营销方面的策略,包括与影响者合作和招募本地设计师。因此,我们需要找到一个与销售和营销相关的句子。观察选项,G选项“Shein has used digital understanding also in sales and marketing — the second thread of its success.”(Shein在销售和营销方面也运用了数字理解——其成功的第二个要点。)
根据空格前面的“The third ingredient is brilliant avoidance of geopolitical controversy. Shein wears its Chineseness lightly. Unlike other Chinese brands such as Huawei, it sells next to nothing domestically. (第三个要素是巧妙地避免地缘政治争议。Shein把它的中国风穿得很淡。与华为等其他中国品牌不同,它在国内几乎没有销售。)”可知,这句话主要描述了Shein如何巧妙地避免政治争议,以及它在国内市场的销售情况。在给出的选项中,D选项“That weakens its association with China in Western eyes.”
根据空格后面的“The company relies on collecting lots of data from American shoppers. Shein's Western competitors may use national security as a reason to fight against its relentless (不留情面的) rise. That would be a compliment — after a fashion. (该公司依靠从美国消费者那里收集大量数据。Shein的西方竞争对手可能会以国家安全为理由来对抗其无情的崛起。那将是一种赞美——在某种程度上)”内容,这句话主要描述了Shein依赖收集大量美国购物者的数据,以及它的西方竞争对手可能会使用国家安全作为理由来对抗其不留情面的崛起。在给出的选项中,F选项“For all its stupendous (惊人的) success, Mr Xu's formula is not without risks.”(尽管许先生的公式取得了惊人的成功,但也不是没有风险的。)

I didn’t like Del so much. He always called me the nickname “Germy”, which meant “dirty”, instead of my real name “Jamie”. Besides, he was known as a trouble-maker in school. So when the head teacher Mr. Smith asked Del to come to his office, I naturally thought that Del had done something mean to someone. Through the window, I caught sight of a smaller boy crying. Del seemed unhappy, too.
He did not return to class that day. All of us were discussing what had happened to him. What else could such an annoying boy do? “He must have hit the boy and was sent home,” I whispered to my friends. Their eyes widened. It felt good to see them so interested in what I said.
The next morning, the whole school was talking about Del being expelled(开除) for beating up a kid. I was surprised that my assumptions were passed on so quickly. So when Del walked into the classroom, all the kids were shocked. The kids next to him shift ed their desks away. “What’s your problem?” Del asked. “I don’t want you to attack me,” one kid said. Some laughed. “Yeah, I might,” said Del. I could tell he was joking, but many kids thought he admitted he did beat up someone.
During recess(课间休息), Del tried to join the kickball game. “Neither team wants you,” one of the players said. “Why?” Del asked, looking confused. “I always play with you guys.” They ignored him and went on playing. Del sat by himself while the rest of the school enjoyed their recess away from him. Del looked lonely and sad, much different from before. I started to feel sorry for him.
Later that day, I learned what really happened. The kid was Del’s little brother and he was crying because their mother fell ill and was sent to hospital. I felt even sorrier for what I said before. I started a rumor(谣言).
注意:
At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game.

Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game. Not wanting him to feel left out, I walked over and sat down beside him. “Hey Germy,” he said. “My name is Jamie.” I replied. I wanted to apologize for starting that rumor about him, but I was too ashamed to say it out loudly. “Del, do you want to play kickball with us?” I asked instead. He looked surprised but happy at the same time. After a moment of silence, he nodded his head.
Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over. I stood up and shouted to the other kids, “Guys, come here! Let’s play kickball together! ” Some of them hesitated, but they eventually joined us. Del was smiling again and so were we. As we played, I realized that Del wasn’t as bad as I thought he was. He was just a normal kid who wanted to have fun and be accepted by others. From then on, whenever someone tried to start a rumor about him, I would stand up for him and tell them the truth about Del. We became good friends, and I learned an important lesson about judging people based on rumors.

26. What can we infer about the author?
A The author benefited a lot from reading books.

28. What is the significance of the new finding for future study?

D. It can identify any living creature with a sample of it.
D. Scientists have made a breakthrough in undersea research.

During recess(课间休息) Del tried to join the kickball game.
