B In Georgia students will be required to build “background knowledge” by reciting all or part of significant poems and speeches. The Arkanses plan calls for students to recite a passage from a well-known poem, play or speech. That’s it: an old-fashioned demand that students memorize the Gettysburg Address or Hamlet’s “To be or not to be” or Gwendolyn Brooks’s We Real Cool and recite it to an audience. Most parents would probably call this a worthy exercise once abandoned for long, gathering the courage to speak in public and firing the adolescent imagination. Who could object to store memorable words in teenage heads otherwise packed with short videos? English teachers, that’s who. Modern educators view memorization as empty repetition, mechanical and prescriptive(规定的) rather than creative or thoughtful. Reciting texts from memory, they say, merely drops information into students’ minds. It’s repetitive learning instead of critical analysis. That’s wrong. Recitation allows students to experience a text as a living thing, ready to be taken up by a new generation. Committing a poem or speech to memory means stepping into the author’s shoes and pondering what he meant. Deciding which words to stress when reciting means thinking about what those words mean. In our age of social media and artificial intelligence, the practice of recitation has never been more needed. Memorizing classic words reminds us that they are alive. Watch the faces of parents as they listen to their children urging us all toward what Martin Luther King called “a dream deeply rooted in the American dream,” or saying with Robert Frost, “I have been one acquainted with the night,” or with Shakespeare, “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow...” When young reciters return to their seats, they know they have made ageless words their own. What parents and students feel at that moment transcends(超越) a good grade. For a few minutes, hardworking teens become King, Frost or Shakespeare. 24. Why are educators against storing memorable words in teenage heads? A. Memorization is nothing but thoughtful learning. B. Memorization is anything but repetitive learning. C. Memorization does injure teenagers’ heads. D. Memorization does no good to critical analysis. 25. What is the author’s attitude toward recitation? A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Opposed. D. Unclear. 26. What does the underlined word “pondering” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Learning from. B. Reflecting on. C. Bringing out. D. Arguing against. 27. How does the author stress the importance of recitation in the social media and AI times? A. By giving examples. B. By analyzing causes. C. By displaying methods. D. By listing figures. C Feeling down about money? Do you know you could have thousands of pounds worth of junk hiding in your drawers? Well, here's some fantastic news to brighten your day: your unwanted tech could be a goldmine, with potential earnings ranging from £1,300 to £6,330.That's right - that neglected hairdryer, forgotten electric toothbrush, or unused smartphone sitting in your cupboard could be your ticket to some extra holiday cash, a dream summer vacation, or a special weekend treat! Recent research from Recycle Your Electricals reveals a shocking 880 million unused working electrical items gathering dust in UK households, averaging 31 items per household. The potential earnings? A surprising £36.7 billion for older, lower, and unbranded items and an astonishing £178.5 billion for newer, higher branded items. It's an incredible new opportunity! It's not just about making money; selling your old electricals is also great for the planet. Waste electricals are the fastest growing e-waste stream, with few people realising that they contain some of the most precious materials on the planet, like gold, aluminium and lithium. So whether you choose to sell or donate your working items, or you recycle the broken ones, it's going to be good for the environment. It's time to unlock that money. Start by taking stock of all your electricals and research their market value by considering factors like brand, age, and condition. Wipe down surfaces, remove dust, and ensure everything is in working order. Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words - a detailed description with high-quality photos speaks louder. Select the platform that suits your item and target audience. Above all, security first. Ensure all personal data are securely wiped. If meeting in person, choose a safe, public location. Alternatively, use secure shipping methods with tracking for added peace of mind. 28.What can be inferred from paragraph 1? The wealth from junk is often overlooked B. People often put plenty of cash in the drawers. C.The potential earnings from wastes are worth a goldmine. D. Electricals are likely to break down if not used frequently. 29.What can the e-waste be used for according to the text? A. Repair work, B. Metal extraction. C.Data security. D.Scientific research. 30. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. Methods of saving money. B. Ways to promote online sales. C. Procedures of online shopping. D. Steps to profit from used electricals. 31. What's the author's writing purpose? A. To offer tips for making a fortune. B. To warn against e-waste pollution. C. To increase the purchase of new electricals. D. To advocate recycling economically and environmentally. D Goldfish may seem like simple creatures swimming in a glass tank, but they possess a rather complicated navigation system, as discovered by researchers at the University of Oxford. Led by Dr. Adelaide Sibeaux, the study aims to shed light on our understanding of how fish, and potentially humans, estimate distances using what could be described as an internal GPS. Writing in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Sibeaux and colleagues report how they created a tank in their experiment with 2 cm-wide black and white vertical stripes (垂直条纹) on the walls, connected by similar stripes across the floor. The team trained nine goldfish to swim a set distance of 70 cm and then return to their starting point when waved at. The experiment aimed to investigate how the fish would estimate this distance without any gestures under different patterns. Over multiple trials, the goldfish averaged a swim distance of 74 cm, give or take 17 cm, when presented with the vertical 2-cm-wide stripes. However, when the stripe pattern was transformed to either narrower vertical stripes, checked patterns, or horizontal stripes (水平条纹), the fish's behavior changed significantly. Narrower vertical stripes led them to overestimating the distance by 36%, while horizontal stripes resulted in highly inconsistent estimations. According to the researchers, the goldfish appeared to be using an “optic (光学的) flow mechanism” based on the visual density of their environment. They kept track of how frequently the vertical pattern switched between black and white to estimate how far they had traveled. The study suggests that different optic flow mechanisms are used by mammals, including humans, based on angular (有角度的) motion of visual features. The study implies that the use of visually based distance information could have emerged early in the evolutionary timeline. “This study is novel because, despite knowing that fish respond to geometric information regarding direction and distance, we don't know how they estimate distances,” Professor Colin Lever, although not involved in the study, said, “it's exciting to explore fish spatial mapping because fish navigation evolved earlier and better than most mammals.” 32.Why did Dr. Adelaide Sibeaux conduct the study on goldfish? A.To test the accuracy of goldfish's internal GPS. B. To create an advanced navigation system for humans. C. To uncover how an inbuilt GPS helps calculate distances. D. To explore the relationships between goldfish and humans. 33. What can we learn about the experiment? A. People gestured the goldfish throughout the experiment. B. The tank was decorated with colorful background patterns. C. Goldfish tended to underestimate distances with horizontal stripes. D. The change in the tank setting led to the goldfish's incorrect judgment. 34. What can be concluded from Paragraph 4? A. Optic flow mechanism is unique to humans. B. Mammals developed flow mechanism long before goldfish. C. Goldfish evaluated the distance with multidimensional visual information. D. Visual density of the environment strengthened the locating ability of goldfish. 35. What attitude does Professor Colin hold towards the study? A. Objective. B. Ambiguous. C. Disapproving. D. Favorable. The months of July and August are often known as the “dog days of summer”, bringing in longer, hotter and sunnier days for you to throw the perfect dog birthday party. In fact, I will never forget a Christmas when I was seven and Joe was five. I’ve kept a secret about that Christmas for 20 years. Now hearing Joe’s voice makes me feel guilty (内疚的) about it all over again. I think he probably doesn’t even remember it. When we were kids, Joe almost drove me “crazy”! If Mom brought home my favorite yogurt, Joe would make sure to eat it before I got a chance. When our parents gave us each our own basketball, Joe insisted on playing with mine instead of his own. That Christmas when I was seven, I was determined to teach him a lesson. At that time I was old enough that I no longer believed in Santa, but I knew Joe did. I couldn’t stand him thinking Santa had put him on the “nice” list when I knew he’d been naughty (淘气的) all year. One day before Christmas, I put on my winter jacket and headed over to our neighbor’s backyard. It was filled with rocks. To me they really looked like coal (煤炭). I was sure that they’d look like coal to Joe too. I filled a lot of the rocks into the pockets of my winter jacket, brought them up to my room and hid them under my bed. Then I waited. That morning, I got up early, went downstairs secretly and put the rocks into the red stocking with Joe’s name on it. I watched Joe take down his heavy stocking, lay it on the living room floor. Looking at the gift inside, Joe’s smile disappeared suddenly. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I said on the phone, “Hey, Joe, do you remember that Christmas morning when you were five …your stocking…” ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ( 3 )原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究! 1. We’ve all seen this school suffer from a lack of funding during the recent economic crash. But thanks to an admirable group of student body members, we’ll start to turn that problem around. The top ten students to bring in funding for the school will each receive a prize for their contribution, but this award will be kept a surprise until 2: 00 p. m. For now, that’s all from me. The next speaker is your headmaster with important information on this week’s storm and our homecoming football game. The State Hermitage Museum, Russia。 B In Georgia students will be required to build “background knowledge” by reciting all or part of significant poems and speeches. Modern educators view memorization as empty repetition… It’s repetitive learning instead of critical analysis. D. Memorization does no good to critical analysis。 25. Deciding which words to stress when reciting means thinking about what those words mean“(在背诵时)决定重读哪些单词意味着要思考这些单词的意思”可推至“pondering”意为本句中的 thinking about“思考”,故答案为 B. Reflecting on。 27. 文章最后2段通过举例“家长亲眼目睹背诵给孩子带来的好处”来说明“… the practice of recitation has never been more needed. Memorizing classic words reminds us that they are alive”, A. By giving examples。 C Feeling down about money? Do you know you could have thousands of pounds worth of junk hiding in your drawers? your unwanted tech could be a goldmine, with potential earnings ranging from £1,300 to £6,330. That's right - that neglected hairdryer, forgotten electric toothbrush, or unused smartphone sitting in your cupboard could be your ticket to some extra holiday cash, Waste electricals are the fastest growing e-waste stream, with few people realising that they contain some of the most precious materials on the planet, like gold, aluminium and lithium. Start by taking stock of all your electricals and research their market value by...Wipe down surfaces, remove dust, and ensure everything is in working order. ...Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words - a detailed description with high-quality photos speaks louder...Select the platform that suits your item and target audience. The wealth from e-waste;Advantage 1 : making money;Advantage 2 : protecting the environment;Practical ways to turn e-waste into wealth D Goldfish may seem like simple creatures swimming in a glass tank, but they possess a rather complicated navigation system, as discovered by researchers at the University of Oxford. D. Favorable. 根据第一段“the study aims to shed light on our understanding of how fish, and potentially humans, estimate distances using what could be described as an internal GPS.(这项研究旨在阐明我们对鱼类以及潜在的人类如何利用一种可以被称为内部GPS的东西来估计距离的理解)”可知,这项研究旨在揭示内置GPS如何帮助计算距离。故选C。 33. 根据第三段“However, when the stripe pattern was transformed to either narrower vertical stripes, checked patterns, or horizontal stripes (水平条纹), the fish’s behavior changed significantly. However, like any technological innovation, it comes with both advantages and disadvantages. One of the most significant benefits of mobile payments is convenience. With just a few taps on your smartphone, you can complete transactions anytime, anywhere. Besides, mobile payments are lightning-fast compared to traditional payment methods. You can pay for your purchases swiftly, reducing waiting times at checkout counters. What’s more, never will we worry about getting fake notes or having to count change. On the contrary, some people hold a negative attitude toward it, arguing that phones can be stolen or hacked easily, which will make our personal information unsafe. Personally, I think mobile payment should be encouraged. It is actually highly secure as payment platforms are utilizing identification methods to safeguard users’ financial information. Therefore, under proper monitor, mobile payment would be more popular in the years to come. 第二节(满分25分) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 My brother Joe and I no longer live in the same state, but I make sure to give Joe a call every Christmas. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右。 2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 Looking at the gift inside, Joe’s smile disappeared suddenly. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I said on the phone, “Hey, Joe, do you remember that Christmas morning when you were five …your stocking…” ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Looking at the gift inside, Joe’s smile disappeared suddenly. His face turned red. He didn’t cry or complain. He stayed completely silent. He wouldn’t even look at anyone else in the room. As I watched, my own expectation turned to something like regret. Joe put his whole stocking aside, hiding it so our parents wouldn’t see how “Santa” had treated him. I’d never told anyone what I’d done. But it still troubled me, even all these years later. I must tell him the truth when I called him this Christmas. I said on the phone, “Hey, Joe, do you remember that Christmas morning when you were five … your stocking…” Joe said, “Coal! Of course I remember! Wow, you really frightened me that time.” To my relief, my brother burst out laughing. “I was embarrassed!” he added. “I waited until everyone had left the room. Then I took the rocks outside. I didn’t want Mom and Dad to know I was naughty!” “I guess if either of us should get coal in a Christmas stocking that year it must be me,” I said. It felt so good to say it, even if Joe never mentioned it. It turned out Joe’s forgiveness — even all these years later — was the best stocking present I could have wished for. 词汇激活 行为类 ①抱怨:complain/make a complaint ②看:look at/take a look at ③离开:leave/go away from 情绪类 ①害怕:frighten/scare ②尴尬:embarrassed/awkward 【点睛】[高分句型1] As I watched, my own expectation turned to something like regret.(由连词as引导的时间状语从句) [高分句型2] “I guess if either of us should get coal in a Christmas stocking that year it must be me,” I said.(由连词if引导的条件状语从句) [高分句型3] It felt so good to say it, even if Joe never mentioned it.(由even if引导的让步状语从句) ( 3 )原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究! 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
