During the long cold winter, we like to eat some food that may make us fat. This is sometimes because it helps us keep warm and gives us energy, but often it’s because we need something to cheer us up. And that’s why we call it “comfort food”.
This kind of food that makes us feel good is different from person to person. It depends on your palate (味觉) and the connection you have with certain tastes and smells. The most popular comfort food is probably the biscuit. It’s thought that the sugary snack often brings back happy memories of childhood and family.
Moving on from sweet and sugary snacks, famous cook and food writer Mary Berry thinks it becomes natural to think about comfort food as soon as the weather gets colder and the nights become darker. And she suggests soup and warming foods as feel-good winter treats.
For comforting dishes like noodles or pizza, many people like them also because they don’t require cooking skills in the kitchen. They are easy to make so we can get them quickly. However, we often eat too much. Even though we know they’re high in sugar or salt, we continue to pig out (大吃大喝). “By making us eat that food, our minds find a way to get a really good feeling. However, we often feel guilty (内疚的) because we don’t realize that,” said Psychologist Shira Gabriel.
Maybe we should take comfort from the fact that eating certain food just makes us feel happy. But, for some people, eating any kind of food brings joy, warmth, happiness and comfort.
21 How does the writer introduce a “comfort food”?
A. By giving a fact. B. By asking a question. C. By giving a definition.
22. Why is the biscuit considered to be the most popular comfort food?
A. Because it’s easy to make.
B. Because it tastes delicious.
C. Because it brings back our happy memories.
23. What does Mary Berry suggest as comfort food in winter?
A. B. C.
24. Which of the following questions did Shira Gabriel answer?
A. Why do our minds make us eat much comfort food?
B. Why do we like to eat fattening food in winter?
C. Why do we like different kinds of comfort food?
C
A long time ago, people were very different from the way we are now. Over time, the human body changes to adapt to a new way of life. Can we expect the human body to change in the future? For sure. The development of technology is changing how we live. What kind of changes can we expect?
In the future, people will probably be even taller. Most of us now have much better food than people in the past and we grow more. However, our muscles will not be as strong as now because we won’t do a lot of physical work.
We are already using our feet less, and our hands more. So we can expect that our legs will get shorter and our feet will get smaller, and at the same time, our fingers will get longer. And our fingers and our eyes will both get better because they’ll have to do more work together.
It’s very possible that people will have four toes, not five. The little toe really isn’t needed any more, so it will probably disappear sometime in the future.
Now, what about the ______? It’ll get smaller, perhaps, because technology improvement will mean that we don’t need to talk so much, and also because our teeth will get smaller.
Last but not least, people won’t have much hair on their bodies as now, as we don’t need it to keep ourselves warm any more.
Will all these things happen? If so, when? These are questions no one can answer for sure.
25. What does the underlined phrase “adapt to” most probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Be pleased with. B. Be used to. C. Be beneficial to.
26. Which of the following can be put in ______?
A. mouth B. toe C. nose
27. We can infer (推断) that ______ from the text.
A. it’s good for people to have these body changes
B. all these body changes will happen in the future
C. no one is sure when these body changes will happen
28. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Future Life B. Body Changing C. Unknown Questions
第二节(共5个小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从6个选项中选出能分别填入5个小题空白处的最佳选项。
There are only two reasons why people can’t achieve their goals: The goals aren’t important to them; people don’t break them into small enough pieces. ___29___ Why should I do my best?
Have you ever watched a quitter in a boxing match—a man who doesn’t go on but walks away. The whole crowd boos (嘘声). They throw drink bottles and bits of hot dogs at the man.
They don’t throw things because he loses. ___30___ In our hearts we all believe that we should try our best. When you take a big effort, people support you.
You feel happier when you do your best. Remember what it feels like on those days when you have done all of your homework—and done it as well as you can.
___31___ Why? Because you are always happier when you give 100 percent, whether it’s an exercise or a basketball game.
Your teachers will tell you “Work hard!” and your parents will also probably tell you “Work hard!”. ___32___ The big reason why you do it is for yourself. The main reason why you do it is to feel good about yourself.
Sometimes you give everything you’ve got but still fail! It’s not failure that hurts so much. ___33___ You may do your best, but still be picked apart. You may do your best but people still laugh at you. But when you do your best, the reward is the feeling that “I did everything I could”.
And if you have done all you can…There comes a point when you say to yourself, “That’s enough.” If you are facing an examination, and you have prepared as well as you can, then you let go. You walk into the examination room, saying to yourself, “I have done everything I can—I’ll accept any result.”
A. So all we need to do is to try our best.
B. They throw things because he gives up.
C. It’s the feeling that you didn’t do all you could.
D. Don’t you feel just a bit more interested in school?
E. You will not regret as long as you have tried your best.
F. But you don’t need to work hard to make your parents and teachers happy.
第三节(共5个小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容填空和回答问题。(1至4题每题答案不超过3个单词,5题须用完整句子回答。)
Do you find it hard to say no whenever someone comes to you for help? Do you feel guilty (内疚的) when you have to tell people that you can’t help them? And do you often say “yes” while your true answer is “no”? If you answered yes, you may be a “people-pleaser”.
Being friendly and helpful is a good thing. It helps you build lasting friendships. However, going too far—trying to please others even at the cost of your own happiness—can leave you feeling stressed. Luckily, there are some steps that you can take to stop being a people-pleaser.
To start with, it’s important to create “boundaries (边界)” in your life. Be clear about what you really like to do. You can also tell others that they can only come to you during a certain period of time.
When someone asks you for help, tell him or her that you need some time to think about it. Use this time to ask yourself: Do you really want to do this? How much time will it take? By giving yourself a few minutes, you’ll be better able to decide.
Some people always try to please others because they have little confidence in themselves. They place a low value on their own happiness. In this case, try positive self-talk. Remind yourself that you have dreams, too. You don’t have to give away your time and energy to do things that don’t bring you joy.
Making a sudden and big change can be hard, but you can break a huge task up into pieces. You may, for example, text to say no. Then, go straight to the person and say no. Practice this in less difficult situations first, such as talking to a salesperson or ordering at a restaurant. Then try refusing your friends or relatives.
Stopping being a people-pleaser doesn’t mean you have to give up being kind and helpful. You can still do good things—but don’t take away your own happiness.
34. People-pleasers refer to people who please others without thinking about _______.
35. If you please someone too much, you will end up putting a lot of _______ on yourself.
36. The first step to stop being a people-pleaser is _______.
37. The reason why people try to please someone is that they are lack of _______.
38. Do you think you’re a people-pleaser? Why or why not?
