Still in shock! I moved around the house purposelessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcases (行李箱). Earlier that evening, I received a call telling me that my brother was killed in a car crash. “Come as soon as you can,” cried my mother.
I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our house was in total mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purposelessly picked things up and put them down. Mother’s crying went through my head again and again.
Larry called some friends to tell them what happened. Someone asked to speak to me. “If there’s anything I can do, let me know.” But I didn’t know what to ask for.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Emerson. He and his wife Donna lived in the block nearby.
“I’ve come to clean your shoes,” he said.
I asked him to repeat.
“Donna had to stay with the baby,” he said, “but we want to help you. I remember when my father died, it took me hours to clean our shoes for the funeral (葬礼). Give me all your shoes.”
I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen. Emerson got to work right away. Watching him devoting (奉献) himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another.
When we returned to clear the dishes, Emerson had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean shining. I couldn’t help crying. Early next morning, we left for the airport with all the jobs done.
Now whenever I hear of a friend who’s lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer, “If there’s anything I can do…” Instead I try to think of one specific (具体的) task that suits that man’s need, like looking after friend’s young children, taking the dog to the boarding kennel (狗的临时寄养所), or house-siting during the funeral. If the person asks, “How did you know I needed that done?” I reply, “Because a man once cleaned my shoes.”
27. The writer didn’t know what to put into the suitcases because _________.

A. Call her friend to ask what she can do.

Francesca Jones, a 20-year-old UK tennis player, won her final qualifying match (资格赛) in Dubai, making herself get a place in the 2021 Australian Open (澳网公开赛).
This win has helped her to quash her doubters who believed that she would never be able to play the sport as a professional (职业选手) because of her disability. Jones was born with only three fingers and one thumb (拇指) on each of her hands. She had to be operated on many times at a very young age. Her win is the culmination (巅峰) of her hard work and deep love for tennis, a love which she found while a child in her hometown of Leeds in the UK.
In the summer of 2005, Jones’s parents researched some of the organized activities that their 5-year-old daughter could take part in. They came across the Heaton Tennis and Squash Club, which was at the time hosting a four-day tennis camp. Jones attended the camp, where she met her first coach Matt McTurk From there, her love for the sport quickly developed.
Believing in her abilities to become a professional, Jones booked more lessons at the club. She accepted the challenges that being born with disabilities had created for her. In a given week, Jones would work with her coach for five hours and train with other club players for six to eight hours.
As time went on, Jones became one of the top players in her hometown. Her family considered moving to Barcelona, where Jones could attend the Sanchez-Casal Academy, whose coaches had trained several top tennis players. She fell in love with the city and the Academy as soon as she arrived. Training four to five hours a day, Jones showed a talent at the sport that had quickly made her different from her competitors (竞争对手). Emilio Sanchez, who set up the Academy, remembers Jones had a strong sense for where competitors were going to hit the ball. This talent gave Jones an advantage over others.
Ranking (排名) No.241 in the world, Jones has bigger dreams than just qualifying for the 2021 Australian Open. She hopes to use this achievement as encouragement for people who are facing their own doubts and challenges. “It’s great that I’ve used this platform (平台) so far and I hope my message of will get out there,” said Jones. “Even if I could make a limited influence, that would mean a lot to me.”

Millions of people around the world haven’t got clean water. This is a huge problem because dirty water causes terrible illnesses. One of them is trachoma(沙眼).
