“Why did the fox steal my shoes?” sounds like the start of a brain teaser (脑筋急转弯) or an annoyingly hot song. But for people in Berlin, it was a real question that a local fox was behind a series of shoes thefts.
About two weeks ago, Meyer, a resident of Berlin, noticed that one of his new running shoes had disappeared from his porch, and he decided to examine the theft, a German news site reported.
Meyer quickly learned that he was not the thief’s only victim, and a tip helped him catch the fox. Days later, Meyer spotted the fox again; he followed it and discovered the fox’s secret place of more than 100 shoes.
Meyer got a photo of the thieving fox and its ill-gotten shoes, which he shared on Twitter. The shoes contained sneakers, and slippers in range of colors, shapes and sizes, though the most numerous shoes by far were Crocs.
This isn’t the first time that an urban fox has demonstrated a seeming shoe fetish (恋物). In August 2019, a fox in Melbourne, Australia, repeatedly visited a woman’s porch and stole three boots over the course of a week. In a small town in western Germany, a female fox stole about 110 to 120 shoes in just one night, presumably “for her babies to play with”, according to Reuters.
It’s unknown whether all of these foxes were acting independently or whether their actions were linked, perhaps as part of an international shoe-stealing group with a bad purpose that humans can only imagine.
24. What can we know about Meyer according to the passage?
A. He had his shoes stolen.
B. He was physically attacked by a fox.
C. He moved out of Berlin and settled in a new place.
D. His favorite shoes were Crocs.
25. What did Meyer do when he found the fox’s hiding place?
A. He drove the fox away.
B. He took a picture and posted it on social media.
C. He sent some food to the fox.
D. He followed the fox and found many other foxes.
26. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word in paragraph 5?
A. Totally. B. Partly. C. Definitely. D. Possibly.
27. How does the author sound in the last paragraph?
A. Delighted. B. Serious. C. Humorous. D. Terrified.
C
Once upon a time a young man wanted to go to a village on business. Halfway there was a mountain. Before he left home, his family warned him to stay calm and climb onto trees if he was in face of beasts(野兽). In this way, the beasts couldn’t do anything to him.
The young man remembered these words and began his trip.
He walked for a long time carefully and found no beasts were out there. He thought his family’s worries were unnecessary. And he became relaxed as he walked. Just at that moment, he saw a fierce(凶猛的) tiger running to him and he climbed onto a tree nearby at once.
The tiger roared(咆哮) around the tree and even jumped to reach the man. The young man was too scared to hold the tree and fell right on the back of the tiger. Full of fear, he had to hold the tiger tightly. The tiger thought that must be a giant beast. So it was afraid and started running madly.
People on the road didn’t know what had happened and said, “Look at the young man. He is riding a tiger!” “Cool!” “Superman!”
Hearing these words, the young man was very angry. “Why can’t they see I’m suffering a lot? Don’t they understand I am in fear and almost scared to death?” he said to himself.
28. Why did the young man go to the village?
A. To travel B. To visit friends. C. On business. D. For holiday.
29. How did the young man feel when he saw the tiger?
A. Excited B. Scared. C. Surprised. D. Bored.
30. Why was the tiger afraid?
A. It was old and weak.
B. The young man was very strong.
C. It thought people around would kill it.
D. It mistook the young man for a giant beast.

B. The young man was very brave.
C. We shouldn’t admire others blindly.
D. The young man shouldn’t listen to his family.

Britain is the sixth fattest country: within the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). For more than a decade, the government has declared obesity (肥胖) a national emergency and promised to take action, only to produce disappointing plans that don’t reach what is required.
It should not have taken a disease like COVID-19 to make people fully aware of the awful consequences of the UK’s obesity. Obesity, as well as its associated conditions of diabetes (糖尿病) and high blood pressure, is strongly connected with a higher risk of death from COVID-19 and will have undoubtedly been a factor in the UK having the highest COVID-19 death rate in Europe.
As the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson’s experience of caching the virus and being admitted to ICU has reportedly resulted in a complete change in him, who has previously prided himself on his dislike of an over-controlling state. The government is expected to set out a new strategy this week, aimed at reducing obesity levels both in the next few months — ahead of a possible second wave of infections and the longer term.
This obvious change is welcome, but only if it results in a complete change in the government’s approach, which doesn’t rely on personal responsibility but on much tougher rules, as with tobacco and alcohol.
There is plenty of evidence about what is needed to cut obesity and in recent years, many reports, including from Public Health England and the former chief medical officer, have called for urgent action. Yet these calls were ignored by the government that has seemingly put the food and drink industry’s financial interests over the health of the nation.
32. What has the government done with obesity in the past ten years?
A. It has denied (否认) it is a national emergency. B. It has made unsatisfying plans to reduce it.
C. It has taken effective steps to control it. D. It has called for immediate action on it.
33. What might the British government do next?
A. Place less stress on financial interests. B. Set stricter limits on tobacco and alcohol.
C. Carry out a new strategy to cut obesity. D. Take action to reduce COVID-19 death rate.
34. From the passage, we can learn that______.
A. the British government should have paid more attention to solving obesity
B. the fast-spread disease COVID-19 resulted in the UK’s obesity
C. the Prime Minister caught the virus and was admitted to ICU for obesity
D. the British government has taken effective action to battle against obesity
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. UK Suffering from COVID-19 B. UK Ready for a Complete Change
C. A Cause of Highest COVID-19 Death Rate D. Obesity: An Urgent Problem in the UK

In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch (胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price—five dollars—was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family.
Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s weathered ( 风 化 的 ) door and went inside. Standing proudly and straight in his flour-sack (面粉袋改做的) shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should be kept for a while.”
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked into the sunlight. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought his mom would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben had an idea—he could raise money by selling used nail bags. He ran towards the sound and stopped at a construction site. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin (汽水罐).
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Every day after school, Reuben started his plan.

A. Delighted. B. Serious. C. Humorous. D. Terrified.
【答案】24. A 25. B 26. D 27. C

【答案】32. B 33. C 34. A 35. D

故选A。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“Britain is the sixth fattest country: within the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).(在经济合作与发展组织(OECD)的成员国中,英国是第六胖的国家)”和最后一段中的“There is plenty of evidence about what is needed to cut obesity and in recent years, many reports, including from Public Health England and the former chief medical officer, have called for urgent action. 第二节、读后续写(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
He would raise the money and not tell anybody for he thought his mom would get surprised when she saw that brooch.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Every day after school, Reuben started his plan.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, the time came!
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version
Every day after school, Reuben started his plan. Cold and hungry, Reuben wandered on the streets, searching for the nail bags carefully. To save money, he even decided to deliver papers in the next morning. Exhausted and tired as he felt, he still stuck to the plan. It was the brooch in the shop window that reminded him that what he did was worthwhile. After a long time of hard work, he made it eventually.
Finally, the time came! He took out the soda tin, poured the coins out and began to count. Five dollars! His hard work paid off! Holding the soda tin firmly, Reuben rushed to the shop to buy the brooch. The moment he got the beautiful brooch, he burst through the front door and placed it in Dora’s hand. Never had Dora received such a gift. Speechless and happy, she held her son tightly in her arms, with tears welling up in her eyes.
