(2023-2024学年高二下·江苏南通·期中)From a Tampa performing arts conservatory comes the story of a blind jazz saxophonist who uses his disability as a teaching tool. Like Obi-Wan Kenobi, he encourages his students to act on instinct(直觉); to feel the music through their instruments, and not let the waking world deceive them. “Welcome to every day of my life,” says Matthew Weihmuller in his jazz improvisation(即兴演奏) class after turning the lights off.
Weihmuller teaches jazz advanced, basic, and improve at the Patel Conservatory in Tampa. When Weihmuller started playing, he needed braille(布莱叶盲文) sheet music, and pieces would take months, even years to learn. As if that weren’t difficult enough, few people in the country were capable of providing braille music, so he started “brailling” his own, with the help of his mom — all the way through college. “They can’t look at their instrument. Now, they have to feel their instrument with their fingers and hands, right?” Weihmuller said. “Now, we’ve got to listen to the music. We can’t read it... it forces the students to use their other senses.”
Advanced jazz musicians will understand that during improvisational sessions, a musician has to be ready for sudden changes in time signature or key. This is nearly impossible to express through sheet music. At least in this regard, the children are learning in the best way for this unconventional, yet traditional form of jazz music. As an educator with blindness, Weihmuller stresses turning any disadvantage into an advantage, a teaching philosophy that has led some students to tell the man that he has changed the way they look at life.
“It’s everything for me, as an educator to hear someone say that you changed their life,” he states. “It’s awe-inspiring and I hope that I can inspire others who are dealing with their situations, disabilities, barriers, and challenges in the same way that I have.”
4. What does the underlined word “deceive” probably mean in the first paragraph?
A. Abandon. B. Suspect. C. Mislead. D. Humble.
5. How does Weihmuller teach his students jazz?
A. By training them with all the lights off. B. By inspiring them to use multiple senses.
C. By getting them involved in improvisation. D. By providing them with braille music sheet.
6. Which of the following can best describe Weihmuller?
A. Optimistic and humorous. B. Realistic and easygoing.
C. Hardworking and creative. D. Adventurous and tolerant.
7. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The growth process of a blind musician. B. Teaching philosophy of a blind teacher.
C. Braille music created by a jazz musician. D. The success of a musician’s improvisation.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. C 7. B

Dear Peter,
I am thrilled to hear that you are planning to visit my hometown this summer to try out the local cuisine. I highly recommend you to sample a well-known traditional dish called “Xiaolongbao”, which is a type of steamed bun filled with savory pork and soup broth.
The time-honoured dish originated from my hometown — the Jiangnan region of China, especially Shanghai and Wuxi. It is traditionally steamed in small bamboo baskets, hence the name (xiaolong is literally small steaming basket), and has become famous all over China. You can easily find Xiaolongbao in most restaurants and food stalls here. It’s a must-try dish that you won’t regret.
Looking forward to your visit and trying out some delicious Xiaolongbao together.

(2023-2024学年高二下·河南南阳·阶段练习)When I first moved to the south of America in the summer holiday before middle school, I realized that I was stepping into a completely different world. New Orleans, Louisiana, was unlike any place I had ever been to. In the French Quarter, tourists walked around all year with long skinny cups in their hands, and there was a popular game going on the streets which were crowded with cars but had few people. What surprised me more than anything, though, was the constant friendliness and compassion of the people of New Orleans.
“What can I get for you, sugar?” a waitress about my age asked me on my first day in New Orleans.
I was taken aback. The waitress did not even know me, but she treated me like family. She smiled down at me as I pointed to an item on the menu.
“Is the pasta good?” I asked her.
“It’s not my favorite,” she admitted with a smile. “But I’m more of a girl who prefers rice!” She shrugged, letting out a loud laughter.
I looked at her in shock. What was I supposed to say to that? I couldn’t believe that the waitress had just prevented me from ordering something. Actually, she had given me her honest opinion, as if we were best friends. She even told me her name—Mary. She even told me that she just worked as a part-time waitress and that she would be a high school student soon.
After a few days in New Orleans, I got used to kind reminders and polite greetings. I also realized how comforting it was to be treated like I belong wherever I went.
As soon as I settled into my new high school, I adapted myself to the school life. I was drawn to the lively music scene that New Orleans was famous for. I was a trumpet (小号) player, and I wanted to join the school music club. However, I was afraid that I was too poor in music to be qualified for the school music club.

【答案】
One afternoon, I was surprised to see a group of students including Mary practicing jazz in the school playground. The vibrant notes of trumpets, saxophones, and drums intermingled under the warm sun, creating a harmonious symphony that echoed throughout the campus. Mary, her fingers dancing across the valves of her trumpet, noticed me watching from afar and beckoned me over with an inviting smile. “You play, don't you? Come join us!” she shouted above the music, her eyes sparkling with genuine enthusiasm. My heart raced; this was the chance I had secretly hoped for, yet my insecurities held me back.
Finally, with Mary’s encouragement, my hesitation slowly melted away. I gathered my courage and approached the ensemble, trumpet in hand. The group warmly welcomed me, their acceptance dispelling my fears. Under Mary’s patient guidance, I began to find my rhythm within the ensemble. Our practices became a haven where mistakes transformed into learning opportunities, and every note played strengthened my confidence. Through this experience, I learned that sometimes, it takes a little push from a friend to realize one’s potential and truly belong.

After graduating from Minzu University of China with a major in Chinese bamboo flute, Dong registered at the University of New South Wales in Australia in 2015 to study curating(策展) and cultural leadership. As Dong’s performances grew in popularity, snippets(片段) of her shows spread across social media, drawing in a larger audience. With over 1 million followers online, including nearly 150,000 from international platforms, Dong’s influence continues to grow.
Apart from her conservatory, Dong also offers online dizi lessons to a global audience and organizes online exchange concerts for her students worldwide. “I hope to create a platform for music enthusiasts to connect and build friendships through their shared love for music,” she said.
Ever since she arrived in Australia, Dong has noticed a growing interest in Chinese traditional music among local people. Many music schools now offer courses on Chinese instruments. “This demonstrates that traditional Chinese music is thriving (兴旺) not only in formal concert halls but also on the streets and within communities,” she said.

It is not hard to learn more about a piece of famous painting, but identifying an unknown painting can be tricky. What do you need to do to get its specific information? Here are tips to identify a painting.
·Use the signature or monogram(字母组合图案) to dig online and find the image. This will let you narrow down the search and figure out who the artist is.

If you’re struggling to remember an artist’s name or you want additional information on a particular painting, download an image recognition app designed specifically for art. There are several apps for both Android and iPhone that allow you to snap a photo of a painting to search through museum catalogues, university databases, and art history texts. 17
·Ask an expert to identify the era, style, or painter of an image. 18 The reason is that an expert like a professor in the field of art will be able to offer insights about the period, style, and give you a better sense for where to look. He may even know who the artist is as soon as he takes a look at it.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One afternoon, I was surprised to see a group of students including Mary practicing jazz in the school playground.

Finally, with Mary’s encouragement, my hesitation slowly melted away.
