Although there is a huge increase in Earth’s human population, the number of hungry people in the world has actually fallen in the past 30 years. Yuan Longping has contributed more to this achievement than anyone else.
Yuan was born into a poor farmer’s family in 1930 and his parents hoped their son would become a doctor. However, he chose to study farming science at university in Chongqing because he wanted to change the Chinese farmers’ hard life caused by lack of food. His goal was to find a better way to grow rice and help feed the people in his country.
The first major breakthrough for Dr Yuan came in 1970 when he discovered a type of wild rice in Hainan. Within three years, Dr Yuan had created the world’s first hybrid rice, by combining the Hainan rice with more traditional rice types. This new rice allowed farmers to produce 30% more rice without the need for more land. Many farmers started using Yuan’s new rice which finally allowed over 70 million Chinese people to escape hunger. But Dr Yuan has not finished yet.
In 1986 Yuan began developing an improved type of hybrid rice that was even better. It needed less water and labor to produce even more rice. Though it was a difficult process, Yuan never gave up. Eventually, in 1995, experiments of Yuan’s new hybrid rice began in 55 counties throughout China and the results were so spectacular that it was quickly made available throughout China.
Yuan hasn’t limited his efforts to helping only China. His hybrid rice has been introduced to countries such as Madagascar and Kenya, where they have been able to produce up to 4 times as much rice as before.
When he was over 90 years old, he still kept working tirelessly. However, he didn’t care about being famous. He felt it gave him less freedom to do his research. Spending money on himself or leading a comfortable life also meant very little to him. Indeed, he believed that a person with too much money has more rather than fewer troubles. He therefore gave millions of yuan to support others for their research in agriculture (农业).

His friends and family call him “Big Feng” because he is very tall and played basketball as a young man. But he is also big in a different way—he fights hard to protect China’s past. His real name is Feng Jicai and he has written many novels about life in China.
Several years ago, however, he put down his pen for a while and began to protect the cultural relics(文化遗产)in Tianjin where he lived. Once someone asked him why he no longer wrote. He replied that at the moment he felt protecting cultural relics was more important.
Feng loves his hometown. He believes that old things must be given a place next to new things, or people will soon forget their great past. He does not make speeches to get others to help him in his projects. Instead, he goes out and does what he can himself. If others follow him, so much the better. One of his biggest projects was to protect the oldest street in Tianjin. Along that street some shops had been in business for seven hundred years. Although the city government rebuilt this street, they did save its oldest building. Another project was more successful: he suggested the city government reserve(保留)some land in the centre of the city so it could not be sold for business. This area is very important for the history of Tianjin. It was here that the city was first built during the Song Dynasty Later many treasures were found here.
To Feng, digging down into the earth is like reading a book page after page. Each dynasty found in the earth is like an interesting story. Not long ago, he and other writers and artists took photos of the old parts of Tianjin. The photos were put into a book which was very popular. The money from the book helps his projects. Once, an old man asked Feng to sign a book for him, saying he would give it to his grandson who was not yet born. Feng was glad to do it he knows that the past is not only for us to enjoy but also for the children of the future.

Suppose you are earning 30,000 yuan every month. Do you think you are rich? Does your income make you feel happy?
Well, these days, not even the rich feel rich. According to a survey, only 13 percent of American millionaires considered themselves wealthy. Some of them had more than $5 million, but they still didn’t feel rich. If multimillionaires don’t feel wealthy, then who does?
I decided to visit Elizabeth Dunn. She is a psychology (心理学) professor at the University of British Columbia. I asked her, “Once people have enough money to cover their basic needs, what would make them feel satisfied with what they have?” Dunn said she didn’t know of any studies that tried to directly answer this question. But she did point to some research that seemed to provide some possible answers to it.
First comes social comparison. Dunn says that it plays a very important role. If a person is richer than the people he compares himself with, then he is going to feel rich. In a 2005 study in Germany, people were happier the larger their incomes were in comparison with those who were similar to them in terms of age and education. Another study found that people were less happy the more their neighbors earned. Things were worse when their neighbors won the lottery (彩票).
Dunn also noted a couple of other factors (因素) that might lead people to feel richer. She brought up a 2016 study. It found people’s bank balance (账户余额) could affect their life satisfaction. Some people feel pretty good about their level of income, but it’s not because they are earning a lot. Instead, it may be because they always have at least 5,000 dollars in the bank. That number is able to shape their sense of financial security (安全).
It also matters a lot what people do with their money. Spending money in certain ways can make people feel better. Generally speaking, it helps to spend more on unforgettable experiences. Paying others to do the things that one hates the most, such as cooking, also brings feelings of happiness.
“It’s not just how much you have, but how you spend it,” Dunn told me. “If you make excellent spending decisions, then you can really turn a middle income into a fair bit of happiness.”
34.According to the survey in the second paragraph, ________ felt rich.
A.all millionaires in the U.S. B.few millionaires in the U.S.
C.most millionaires in the U.S. D.not a single millionaire in the U.S.
35.Altogether, Dunn brought up ________ factors that might affect people’s feelings of wealth.
A.two B.three C.four D.five
36.Suppose x means one’s level of income in comparison to his peers’(同辈) and that y means his feeling of happiness. Which of the following shows the correct relationship between x and y?
A. B.
C. D.
37.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To show us how social comparisons influence our feelings of satisfaction.
B.To tell us how one’s bank balance influences his or her sense of life satisfaction.
C.To encourage us to think about the relationship between money and happiness.

26.Why did Yuan choose to study farming science?
A.Because he was born in a farmer’s family without enough food.
B.Because he wanted to save the hungry people all over the world.
C.Because he thought farming science was better than being a doctor.
D.Because he wanted to help Chinese farmers have more food to eat.
27.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.A type of rice in Hainan. B.The improved hybrid rice.

28.In which order did the following things take place in Yuan’s life?
a. Yuan’s rice helped over 70 million Chinese stay away from being hungry.
b. Yuan created the world’s first hybrid rice.
c. Yuan’s new hybrid rice succeeded and was grown all over China.
d. Yuan began to improve his hybrid rice.
e. Yuan discovered a type of wild rice in Hainan.

30.What did Big Feng do to protect old things in Tianjin?

D.He rebuilt the oldest street in his hometown.

D.Big Feng is interested in digging down into the earth and reading books.

A. B.
C. D.
37.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To show us how social comparisons influence our feelings of satisfaction.

D.To mention the millionaires’ feelings of satisfaction to readers.
