When I was nine years old, I wrote my first poem. My mother read the little poem and cried.
“Buddy, it’s a beautiful, beautiful poem!” My mother poured out her praise.
“What time will father be home?” I asked. I could hardly wait to show him my poem. My father had begun his movie career as a writer. He would be able to appreciate (欣赏) my poem even more than my mother. I confidently put the poem right on my father’s plate on the dining table.
My mother said he would be home around 7. But my father got home an hour later than expected. He sat down at the table and noticed his plate. “What is this?” I heard him say. “Ben, Buddy has written his first poem. And it’s beautiful, so amazing!” Mother said.
“If you don’t mind, I’d like to decide that for myself,” Father said.
I kept my face lowered to my plate. It was only 10 lines long. But it seemed to take hours. “I think it’s bad,” my father said. I couldn’t look up. My eyes were getting wet.
“Ben, sometimes I don’t understand you,” my mother was saying. “This is just a little boy. He needs encouragement.”
“I don’t know why you think so,” my father held his ground. “There has been enough bad poetry (诗歌) in the world already. No law says Buddy has to become a poet.”
I ran from the dining room, threw myself on the bed and cried.
A few months later, I read that first poem. It was a bad poem. I worked up the courage to show him a short story. My father thought it was not good but hopeful. I was learning to rewrite.
As I worked my way into other books and plays and films, I realized how lucky I was to have a mother who said, “Buddy, its wonderful!” and a father who shook his head “I think it’s bad.” Both are love that forces me to improve. In fact, all of us in life need both loving force.
32.What did the mother think of the Buddy’s poem?
A.She was so moved that she cried.
B.She thought the poem was well written.
C.She considered Buddy had no talent for poetry.
D.She believed Buddy needed advice from his father.
33.The underlined sentence “My father held his ground” may mean “_________”.
A.My father began to agree with his wife
B.My father got so angry that he stood up
C.My father threw my poem on the ground
D.My father refused to change his thoughts
34.From the passage, we can infer (推测) that father is _________.
A.loving and strict B.careful and strict
C.careful and rude D.careless and strict
35.Which of the following is RIGHT?
A.A few months later, the writer stopped writing.
B.After years the writer hated his father very much.
C.That day father didn’t come home until a quarter past eight.
D.The writer was confident that father would praise his poem that day.

Do you notice that students spend the same amount of time in class, but some get better grades than others? In some ways, it’s because they are different listeners. When having classes, some of them listen carefully. We call them effective listeners. Some just daydream or talk to others. They are ineffective listeners.
How are some listeners effective? First of all, they don’t care about some poor situations, like an uncomfortable seat or a personal problem. They say “No” to anything that will stop them from understanding and remembering. After leaving a class or meeting, they remember what the speakers said, not the room conditions or the speaker’s accent (口音).
Effective listeners always pay attention to the message itself. They try not to be influenced (被影响) by their own feelings or ideas. They do not decide if the thing is boring, too easy, or too difficult before listening. They like getting the challenge of new ideas. To help remember difficult ideas, they write down important words and phrases.
However, ineffective listeners often daydream. They don’t like to hear what they don’t agree with or easily understand. They are often so busy taking notes that they miss the speaker’s main idea. These listeners leave a speech or a class with a notebook full of words, but the notebook means nothing.
Do you wish to do well in your study? Start to be an effective listener. It may help.

Times have changed, but falling asleep in class is still a common occurrence (常事) among students.
Why do students sometimes fall asleep in class? An obvious reason is lack of sleep. However, there are also causes for getting too little sleep.
Homework is a daily occurrence for most students, one that can take three to four hours per night. A student who wants to be able to take part in any activity besides homework must stay up late to fit everything in. Club activities, sports, computer-game playing, and TV viewing, for example, all make students have less time for both homework and sleep. Sometimes students lack sleep because of after-school jobs for their families.
Physical problems can also cause students to fall asleep in class. For example, insomnia (失眠), which may keep a student up at night, causing exhaustion (疲惫不堪) during class hours, is a serious problem. Medical evidence also supports the idea that each person has a body clock that helps to decide his or her sleep pattern. Unluckily, these body clocks don’t always work according to school timetables.
The effects of falling asleep in class can be quite serious. First of all, sleeping in class is not a good way to endear (使受喜爱) yourself to teachers. And other students may make jokes about those who sleep in class. However, the most harmful effect of sleeping in class is missing out on important points. In the long run, sleepers may end up failing classes.
Since students are probably not going to deal with the problem, falling asleep in class will probably remain an all-too-common occurrence. It will continue until more teens find a way to balance their personal and social lives with school and work on their own, while still finding enough time to sleep.

We can enjoy ourselves and learn about the outside world as well. What’s more, it is meaningful for us to do some voluntary work. I can work as a volunteer at the weekend.
